- These BBS wheels used to have an amazing dark chrome finish. Then one day it decided to peel off like an onion skin. Watch this video to see how I refinished them after two years of trial and error...

That's amazing. I did not expect it to look like that...so pro. It looks like it's been painted with spray gun not rattle cans. Great job!
Very informative and a nicely made video; now I'm ready to tackle the refinishing of my BBS honeycombs - thanks for sharing!
Great to hear that it worked out so well. It sounds like you invested a good amount of time in the prep work!
Feel free to post pics on the AutoHowTV forums. I would love to see the final result!
Great video! Thanks for taking the time to explain everything so thoroughly and clearly and getting it all shot on video. Youda MAN!
Damn that looks nice! I just came up on a set of these BBS RKs that I got for 200 bucks. I couldn’t believe how light these wheels are. They have some really bad curb rash on them so I decided to get them professionally powder coated. I think they will be worth it.
Great video 👍🏼
The best tutorial I ever saw about painting wheels, thanks!
Very clean and beautiful work.
+Bobby0345 Thanks!
This video answered all my questions. Thanks for covering all your bases
She looks sweet and the color really goes with the car! Awesome video man thanks!
glad I could help!
Sounds like they turned out nice. Feel free to post pics on the forums. See description of this video for the link...
So i did this with my rims (and by the way its the type of weights that clip on the side) and they look AMAZING! I sanded the hell out of the rust on the rims. I did 2 coats of primer, 2 coats of dark grey (same color in vid) wheel paint, and 2 coats of clear wheel paint. I used all Dupli Color brand
I cant beleive how great they look!
GREAT VIDEO! 5 STARS! HELPED ME OUT ALOT!
Awesome looking wheels and with new paint looks dope! thank you
GREAT JOB.... I wish there were more uploads like yours on youtube.
Excellent vid, just finished refinishing a set of 17x9 bullitt wheels for my 'stang in the graphite w/ a black basecoat and I love it. Thanks.
Great vid dude! I will be painting a set of Prodrive P1s now just because you make it look so easy! Thank you
Killer vid! I'm working on restoring a set of Rota's to put on my new WRX. Because of time constraints, I used Aircraft Stripper to get the wheels down to the bare aluminum. This is relatively easy with a couple of coats... starting on the rest this weekend! Thanks for the tips!!
great video, thanks for taking the time to actually edit your video professionally. first one i actually watch all the way through and didn't feel like puking.
Thanks. It's been more than a year since I filmed this and the wheels are still holding up very well!
Just to catch up on comments...the paint is durable and if applied correctly in several coats you'll be good for a long time. These were done in 2008 and I redid them in 2012 using 100% gunmetal for a different look. Very few chips at that time. If you use regular paint or plasti-dip, then yes expect a crappy look after a while--also speaking from experience!
Whoa cool seeing this.. I live on the same road as that German Auto place
That looks really nice bro. If I didn't know you did that, i would've thought a pro did them.
Great video, I'm looking at redoing my wheels soon to change the color and this is very helpful.
You are def right...most cars can get away with sanding, paint and clear BUT the bead blasting left such a rough surface I took some extra steps to try to smooth it out a bit.
awesome video. Really good editing, awesome infor. cant say it in words.
Nice work. Refinishing a set of RK2s my self!
Wheels came out great man, im picing up a set of bbs rcs, im going to do them the same way, video helped me a lot
very nice indeed one of the best refubishings ive seen ina long time!
Great how to video. Also, if you liked the chrome look, you could also send them out to get spray chromed too. I was skeptical of the spray chrome process at first, but after seeing some examples at SEMA the last couple years, I am a believer now.
I don't know how i just got into a 12 years old video, but great job, looks great
Powder coating would be a great choice if you have the budget. Although you have to be careful with certain aluminum wheels. The high temps used to bake on the finish can mess with air pockets in the metal.
The biggest difference besides cost is that powder coating is a much more durable finish.
cool vid and great job on the wheels man. they look great
You did an awesome job with this video bro!! Good for you!!
bro i like the way u explained... nice wheelz. and a phat ride u got there ;)
interesting!
i had that very same shop mount my volk ce28 wheels for my evo!! the owner is a great person
best rim painting vedio on youtube.
thankyou autohow tv
Love that intro BTW. nice to see you tubers getting a lil creative with their vids!
Thanks. Most of my videos are pretty straightforward but every now and then I'll mix it up...
they look really good man. it helped me make my choice to do this ill be doing this shortly to my car.
Good video, covered all the bases
That looks amazing man !!!!
thanks for the tips - great video! ... gonna paint my stock steel rims with the dupli color black... wish me luck
Nice work. Gonna try to re finish my rims soon.
Awesome video. I may be painting mine soon. thanks.
A lot of work, outstanding job and video
the note card trick is awesome idea. nice vid
@mlc7boosted Love those RKs! I thought about powder coating but that's a little iffy on aluminum wheels (so I've heard). The high heat can stress the forged aluminum or something. You may want to double check or even call BBS.
Great video! Great commentator voice too!
good job and great step by step hands on information well respected in my book and way to do it right
@islandminisunlimited correct. if they are in good shape you just need to sand them to give the paint something to stick to. Primer helps but it's not required.
I hear you on that...I have a set of black wheels with the polished lip (winter wheels) and I love the look too.
For rims with lots of thin spokes like these I like a silver--maybe a little bit darker. Thanks for the comments!
@madugui it's been a while...full parts list is on my site. I think it was between 40-50 bucks because I was experimenting with different cans of primer paint. You could pull this off for less. The duplicolor is like $5/can
@whiteraider you have good taste! I currently have the black bullits on (with cold weather tires).
Wow awesome video !! Great job .
Cool video and good info, wish I could get my hands on a set of these wheels, to bad they are discontinued..
You can sand or apply some bondo and then resand prior to primer. I think there are some other videos or tutorials that show bondo application on rims.
This is a really great video!
I would recommend vapour blasting over soda or sand to avoid having the rough finish and having to use filler primer.
Great Video! I really enjoyed it.
Awesome colour man
AWESOME video man, great job, thank you.
no problem at all
if you mean fade as in less shiny then you may not be putting a heavy enough coat on. A bunch of light coats with the color and two medium coats with the clear should work well.
There are directions on the duplicolor can about when to apply coats. I think they say to spray the clear coats within 20 to 30 min of the last coat OR wait several days and then clear them.
In general clear tends to make things a little darker/duller but slightly heavier coats should make it glossy.
If the stock wheel is polished aluminum then you would definitely want to use the 300 grit sandpaper to give the wheel a rougher surface. This will help paint stick to the wheel better and probably get rid of any clear coat protecting the aluminum. Feel free to post pics of your wheels on the autohowtv forums so we can get a better idea. Link to the forums is at the top right of this page under "more info"
very cool man .. great job new rims
@GOMBPRODUXIONS In most cases scuffing them with the 320 grit sandpaper is sufficient for this type of quick paint job.
FYI, paint is still holding up surprisingly well and it's been almost exactly 2 years. not bad for a spray can. I'll probably touch them up in the spring.
I only used a darker coat because I wanted the wheels to be different from the rest of the body. In your case I would do a quick 320 grit sand, buy a few cans of spray paint from this site called Automotive Touchup, spray the polar white on, and then seal it with the Duplicolor wheel clearcoat. You would want to get paint that doesn't have clearcoat mixed in.
Duplicolor also makes a white wheel paint so you could go that route instead--not sure if it matches bit worth a test.
@20rattlers12 sand them down a bit like in the video and then lay on several coats to fully cover the black. Great thing is if you mess up, just sand it down again after they dry and try again!
those wheels look good on my IS300, good work
yes, I used the 'gunmetal' to give it a slightly darker tint. you don't HAVE to use the primers I used since I was starting with bare metal.
A thorough 320grit sanding followed by 2 to 3 coats of silver and then a clearcoat or 2 should be good. It will be a bright silver color if you use the duplicolor
cool vid, I have stock steel rims that used to have hubcaps on my 82 buick I took off the caps and started painting the rims I had one finished a few months ago and it held up through winter and still looks great even without clear.
I used a matching color to the car color and I think it looks sweet. Doing some body work on the car its all rusted in the floor and around the roof factory welds. I uploaded some video of it if your curious. I'll post moreas the project progresses.
GREAT video!!!!!!!!!!11 Very Well DONE!!!
You can get a nice smooth finish with the proper preparation but it is almost impossible to get a chrome look using regular paint. But a nice dark silver like I did might work well. Just spend a lot of time sanding and priming to make sure the surface is nice and smooth.
@HyeWarrior Some 320 grit should be fine. No primer needed but it doesn't hurt and will help the paint stick. It is highly unlikely the 2 painted rims will match so I am assuming you plan to do all 4 at once.
Funny that I'm looking to paint my rims and low and behold this vid is about the same rims I run. BBS Rk's. Good info. Here I go to do mine. Later!
I used A bottle of Brake Fluid and one hot day in the sun above 90F southern California. As most people have found out Brake fluid destroys paint...In my case made hours of work just a paint brush small bucket and one bottle DOT3 Brake Fluid...I was trying to just remove some spray paint someone put on my Isuzu Rodeo Wheels so I did it as a experiment...Not only did it remove the spray paint it ate thru the factory clear coat left me pretty much a bare wheel I used soap & water and a toilet brush to get the rest off. Saved a bunch of money...Your mileage may vary Dont forget to lay down newspaper or body shop paper wrap available at Amazon for 8 bucks for a huge roll of butcher paper so you dont contaminate the ground.
Very nice job!!
Follow-up. I got mine off of a Panoz. Still have the carbon-fiber look center caps, though I run the BBS center caps instead. Lighter than my stock 16's and super-strong. They've been on the car for several years now. I've picked up some road rash on all of them over the years and the shiny silver is a little of faded now. I don't know if I want to paint them with this wheel paint or send them off to be powder coated black. I want a gun-metal look but I haven't seen the paint just yet.
@skinnyg190 having that rough texture from the very beginning kept it from being as smooth as it could have been. If the starting surface is perfect and smooth they will turn out great.
Excellent video
Excellent guide! I have a question. If my current wheels are powder coated from the factory I know that in order to strip them down to metal they must be sanded or dipped in an acid bath. Would it still hold up fine if I used your method and sanded down to the primer (or original coat) and then went over it with filler/self etching primer?
@reinier1234 you want to get a light sanding in to really clean and give it a surface to stick to. In your case you just follow the directions word for word on the can. That should give you a good finish.
@stephenmsanchez005 It's been a few years...it held up much better than I thought! But I will be repainting them in the next few weeks. I did another set of rims for the S2000 with just 2 coats and those are chipping fast--that's what I get for rushing but I only had a few hours of warm enough temps back in March. Rushing definitely shows!
really good video dude
great vid bro! favorited
yes, about 2 each. The silver wheel paint does have some metallic in it. If you want it darker just go with the gunmetal and one light, but even silver coat. It may be tough to get it to look as even with just one coat--maybe one medium coat? If you have something to practice on (even just a piece of cardboard...that can help you figure it out. It is more art than science sometimes.
@AutoHowTV BBS wheels are powder coated ALL the time with no ill effects. Most powders cure at 350 to 400 degrees for 15 to 20 mins. A forged wheel at 350 for 15 mins will not have any ill affect on a forged Alum. wheel.... As for air bubbles, a good powder coater knows how to alleviate that during the prep process.
Great video! quick question though, If i just wanted to paint my rims black without sand blasting what all would I need to buy? also, how can i repair curb rash?
oh ok thank you very much i will sure follow your advice.
How long did you wait until you applied the clear coat?
@MrSekula from a local person on one of the mustang forums like stangnet. That was before craigslist took off so that may be a better option now.
Thanks for the comments @AliGhanizad and @ZooBerryNj.
Makes all the work worth it. The AutoHowTV machine is back up and running with more videos coming soon!
nice! jst the color i was looking for!
Brilliant Bro!
Great video, your wheels came out awesome! I just bought some stock '02 WRX wheels for my winter setup on my '03 WRX wagon, and will use your video for guidance. The only thing I'm curious about is how many coats of Dupli-Color Wheel Paint to use; I'm only going to be painting the face of the wheel and around the sides of the lip where the wheel and tire meet (if that makes sense.) Any advice for how many coats to go with, and how long to wait between coats?
nicely done.
the wheels look bad ass.
thanks for the info
+Guy Haggard Thanks and you're welcome. I hope yours turn out well too if you're planning to do the same.
I am,
I did plastic dip to see how it looks. Going to do the paint next.
Very nice job
Great video thanks for the info bro
very good vid man!!
question to anyone giving input...assuming I sand very well (220 then 400 grit) and clean well and dry...I bought duplicolor green can self etching primer and duplicolor high performance wheel coating gloss black. Do these work together? IF I do a clear coat...do I ...
#1. apply the duplicolor clear or go for the 2k (harder more durable)? I read that 2K should only be used for certain paints.
#2. should I apply clear coat when still tacky 40-45 min after last paint coat or wait 3 or 4 hours
I'm refinishing my hubcaps (no my Honda's not fast lol). I sanded with 120grit and lightly sanded with 400 and cleaned thoroughly. Then applied Rustoleum high performance wheel paint (silver) and it's glossy in some spots but not in others. Why the inconsistency? Will some clearcoat make it all uniform?
After watching your video you have inspired me to do this.I am planning to paint my wheels chrome...What color of primer would you reccomend for a nice shiny finish?
