For me their new album is one of the most solid comeback records in Easycore history, it really filled the ADTR-shaped hole in my heart after the disappointment that was You’re Welcome. Chunk have still got it; I honestly wasn’t expecting something so heavy & cohesive
@@theacademyisntt cool! And I say that because it was their first song released after their hiatus. I don't think marigold is the song to represent their comeback.
This whole album is an underrated gem. This song gives me a major lump in the throat, reminding me of my girlfriend. They definitely captured the vibe here.
I've been a Chunk fan since just before their first full length came out, and I dig the new album just as much as the easycore classics. It hits as a 32 year old in equal amounts as their old stuff hit when I was 21.
"In friends we Trust" was definitely the prototypical easycore song, but I think Rise or Die Trying by Four Year Strong is the peak of easycore and stands out because smaller bands were heavily influenced by it but could never really imitate that frenetic everything plus the kitchen sink sound. Also, you need to work on your French accent, it sounds more Central or Eastern European with the Farsi pronunciation of America. Now I just have images in my head of an Iranian easycore band signed to Western Decaydance Records
I remember seeing chunk on tour with Chelsea grin and Attila back in the day. Bert in his heavy French accent said “WERE NOT THE HEAVIEST BAND ON THIS TOUR BUT WE DONT GIVE A FUCK” great show. As someone who’s been a fan of theirs since the first album this new record really hit a cord with me now being a 33 year old. I really do feel like they matured in all the right ways.
I started listening to this band when you mentioned them in a previous video about bands that were good but underrated or something like that.. I was like I'm french but I've never listened to this band? how come? then a few months later their new album came out and I was sooo hyped. I love them really and I couldn't wait for you to make a new video about their comeback haha
Chunk has come so far as a band! I remember looking at yt music and seeing the new release and immediately hitting play and falling in love with the band all over again. The first thing I noticed was how much Bert's vocals improved, but also their writing and performance ability. I was especially blown away by the song complete you.
There was a band called City Never Sleeps, that was like a perfect pop punk+breakdowns easycore band. They had like 8 songs, all top tier songs. Anyone who likes this stuff should check them out
Nice one Finn. You've broadened my horizons and wouldn't usually seek out music of this temprement but it's got some awesome bits to it, especially the last third
While their new album is not at all in the slightest, I do miss their Pardon My French era style of easycore, I really hope they bring it back on their next album
I'm in love with Chunk's new album, even when I thought that I outgrew that kind of music, I keep coming back to this songs, they're beautifully produced, even when there are some ''core'' elements missing that take me out of the usual Chunk sound, this new project feels evolved, as if easycore were on his 30's
They were my first post subscription purchase after joining URM (for Restart), and the first thing I remember saying was “this is like the perfect blend of pop punk and metal!”… one of my favorite bands since. This album still pulls me out of rough headspaces and is perfect for running to. Also helped bring me back to metal after studio work being hip hop focused for a few years. Heavy, but upbeat. Exactly what I needed to bridge back!😍
Anyone else notice since a day to remember dropped st.anger pop punk bands are doing more acoustic experimentation? Really expanding the genre like state champs did with “act like that”
Absolutely love this song. I'm glad they made a video for it. I didn't think this one would be highlighted in the album. They also have a saxophone solo. It's just so good.
One thing worth mentioning is that the singer, Bert, actually mixes C!NCC's music himself and to me their last album is one of the best sounding album ever made in terms of mixing. This is the hyper-produced metalcore style mixing and it sounds so wide and fresh at the same time. This is like improved Sturgis from his golden era
I could be wrong but the jazzmaster guitar might be a subzero rogue 6. It's a 30 inch scale cheap guitar. Only like $300 or $400 new. Comes in white as well.
Not bad. Reminds me a lot of New Found Glory and some All Time Low songs. You’d think they’d be a lot bigger nowadays considering that they never really had a flop of an album unlike State Champs, Neck Deep, Real Friends, Knuckle Puck, etc.
It seems like the video and song are about a relationship ending because as much as they want to be together, the paths they want to take do not intersect. The girl is living in that villa on the coast (paradise) while alone she tries to enjoy the beauty if it all (rolling in the sand, exploring the hills) but in the end it isn't enjoyable because all she can think about is laying in bed with her boyfriend. So she keeps looking out in the valley, knowing he's in the city, it becomes harder for her to live in this happy place, and she reaches the point where this paradise isn't worth it without him and she decides to burn it down, assuming she goes after her love.
I wish I could appreciate Chunk No Captain Chunk but that vocalist really makes me feel like I'm watching Scooby Doo or something on Disney Plus. The opening riff on the song Captain Blood is probably one of the best riffs I've ever heard in any song.
Hey Finn I was wondering if you ever heard of a band called Close your eyes? They’ve been broken up for a while but they’re easily one of my favorite easy core bands and I never hear anyone talk about them !
This album is great. Listening to it start to end really flowed well. I could listen to it every day, and I have along side Spiritbox for the whole year. Good damn job from chunk.
You hit the nail on the head saying CNCC did it better than anyone else and their self-titled album was their best but they definitely recaptured the magic in my opinion, all their albums are absolute bangers
You should check out the song "How to ruin your future" by Settle Your Scores. It's mostly what I want in an easycore song (fun riffs, catchy chorus, some CHUG, hybrid screaming/cleans). Pretty typical easycore lyrics, but god damn is that song catchy.
Finn this song was more of a laid back song, should've check out Gone Are the Good days, Bitter, Blame it on this song or Complete You. This album was filled with great songs, glad you did a video on them.
Whenever I see a Euro band with the expensive Krank and Soldano stacks I always wonder how they afford that shit with all the VAT and what not over there.
You should check out Belvedere's new album "Hindsight is the Sixth Sense". I think they call their sound skate core, but its a similar sound and a killer album.
I know this is extremely guitar nerdy, but about a year ago i was super into guitar review youtube and baritone stuff so i know that in the video is a decieving jazzmaster. It really looks like the baritone jazzmaster with reversed headstock made famous by Northlane so it's actually thought to play very heavy shit with chugs and open strings, which makes sense for a pop punk + breakdowns band.
jazzmasters & jaguars now come with so many pickup options, i think it's unfair to write them off. that's also prior to modding and whatever your processing does. i have two modded telecasters and i can honestly say they can cover most styles between them.
Sometimes showing restraint can also be a sign of a band maturing. Shame many djenty prog bands don't go down this route because they're usually capable and competent artists.
nice video, although I would disagree about "In friends we trust being the best songs all the way around by CNCC. If had to mention really cool songs form their other records I would say: "Restart", "In the other line", "Playing dead" and "Haters gonna Hate". Of course, their new album is a gem, but The are different gems among the other albums. Thanks Finn!
I would hate to be an artist having to follow up on something as iconic as "hey dudes, are you ready too?" Also wine at a French pop punk party makes sense cos in France good wine is cheaper than crap beer.
When bands say they mature is that they sell out and make soft boring radio friendly music. I agree with that Finn because it's rare when you notice a band that has matured when they improve their songwriting.
Come hang out on Twitch! www.twitch.tv/finnmckenty
Much love dude!

TBH loved You're Welcome aside from maybe like 2-3 songs
You’re welcome was straight garbage

Always happy to hear a Fight Fair reference. Settle The Score is one of the most underrated albums. Game On instantly puts me in a good mood.

The loft they’re in is actually Bert’s own studio they refer to as “The Attic”
I always put ADTR & CNCC! on the same level because both bands can go from Pop Punk, to Easycore, to Acoustic, to heavy all of a sudden.
CNCC has much stronger instruments though.
That guitar Is actually a baritone guitar made by subzero. It was made popular by the band loathe.
If I remember right, they play on baritones so they can utilize the lower tuning a little more cleanly
I saw the guitarist with the baritone guitar so I panicked that it might become semi-djent but I was wrong and I am grateful.
Anyone else notice since a day to remember dropped st.anger pop punk bands are doing more acoustic experimentation? Really expanding the genre like state champs did with “act like that”
Enjoyed the video and the band. Thanks, Finn!

I thought the next one to get a video would be True Colors because the chorus is massive, hopefully the next one !
One of their other new songs is pretty awesome. I think it's called "gone are the good days". At least, that's the chorus. Anyway, it's pretty good.
Ahh dammit I missed the livestream! I love when you bring up the easycore stuff, always my favorite.
I love your style of over-analysis... Would watch that iceberg video!
the comeback single "Bitter" is the long awaited sequel to in friends we trust.
At last. Your Euro stan coming-out. That's what THE CASE against the old continent needed in order to move on.

i love chunk no captain chunk so much! it's so wholesome and just cool. it's been almost 10 years since I first listened to their music, shiiiiiiiii-

If you check out bitter, gone are the good days, and blame it on this song you’ll see how far they’ve come
I was gonna say, they matured past the ~2010 cheesy-core stuff a long time ago. Their feature with LANDMVRKS is amazing, too.
the audio from the mic is pretty bad, not sure if is coming from the headphones or the mic in the front.
My audio? Mine sounds fantastic.
That jazzmaster looks like the subzero 30 inch baritone guitar
Thanks so much for this video! I've been hankering for new easycore and this band is amazing!!
Heartfelt pop punk is a staple of the genre
