Frederik Leon Anlauf actually one of the biggest reasons to avoid the PDK which just jumps to 5000rpm depriving you from the aural pleasure of going through the revs
I dunno how much Porsche pays you to review their cars, but you are worth every penny or even more! They way you present all those futures around manual is astonishing. This was pure joy to watch!
Nick, I always get excited when I get an email notification that you've dropped a video. Please keep doing what you're doing. I have only driven a Porsche once in my life and that was way back in 1987 when I was 24. It was a Guards Red 944 Turbo with a manual transmission. I will never forget what the salesperson said to me. I guess some people are nervous about driving a Porsche, so he said, "Keep one thing in mind. No matter what you do you can't hurt this car." I took him at his word and it was an amazing experience. The handling, the braking, both as legendary as I'd heard. The clutch was smooth, progressive, and light-not grabby at the friction point. The shifter was magical. It was the easiest to drive manual I've ever driven and actually fun. So much fun I got it up to 110 MPH (which felt like 35 MPH) on a local expressway-but that and the California Highway Patrol officer with a radar gun is another story. ;-)
No Nick, we thank YOU for putting this video out! You’ve gotta be one of the first if not the first to do a video on one of these. The split second cut at the discussion about the PDK was much appreciated😂😂
After driving a manual for 6 years, I was shocked how much I enjoyed the PDK. The Sports steering wheel with the paddles + the PDK is shifting ecstasy. Pulling those paddles makes me giddy in the twisties. On the dragon, the paddles = most fun I've ever had driving. On the track, in the canyons, that's where the PDK offers plenty of driving involvement and frankly, makes you a better driver. This is one of the few subjects where I think newer is better. But it is true, when driving around town, the PDK is uneventful.
I just want to give a specific example. You're on a straight at high speed headed into a turn, you can shift down from 4th to 2nd almost instantly with the paddles, take a really tight turn in 2nd at high rpm, and then on the exit, when you're near redline, instantly hit 3rd gear, and I mean instantly. So a straight, turn, straight goes 4th, 3rd, 2nd, 3rd, 4th - all instantly. It's so fun. The funnest part is the engine noise because listening to an engine shift that fast produces the most incredible engine noise. It makes you laugh!
So I'm just supposed to sit here and act like I wasn't waiting for part 2 of the options video? Lol. Manual transmission will hold me over well though. No worries.
@@NickMurray They should put the Manual transmission in the new 911/992 turbo S for Aussie drivers, It's not like we can go over 110km/h and Manual is more fun.
Agreed, manual is the only way. We are on our third Cayman (987 & 2x 718) and all have been manual. The first 718 manual was ordered by mistake by the dealer as here is Australia most people opt for the PDK also. We were glad that there was one available. The second one is much better optioned with sport chrono and sports exhaust and is a truely wonderful car to drive. Great video.
I admit I dated my cousin with a 991.1 and a Cayman GTS - and I loved it! But couldn't agree more. Went from a 991.2 C2S manual to a "T" manual. Was never that happy with the long throws on the "S". Though I lost 50 HP switching to the "T", like you've always said, that motor is probably more enjoyable. And the shorter, more crisp throws on the "T" manual have brought back the joy of driving a 911! This one is a keeper! Cheers.
Loving the 992 and finally the manual has arrived. As amazing as the PDK is, I would never get one. Learned to drive and took my license test in the 80’s in a manual, have loved it ever since! My dream car has always been a manual 911 and as I’m finally getting closer to my goal I’m so happy to see Porsche keeping the tradition alive!!!
Odd that they haven’t yet offered the manual on the 992 S in Europe yet, only North America. I think the other reason they only offer it in S variant is to avoid a clash with the upcoming T manual.
Your comment regarding the red and black combination giving a nice match is exactly why I ended up with a carmine red/ black C4GTS while I was looking for a GT silver 991.2. I love the color combo. W.r.t. manual transmission I agree, although the sound symphonies going fast through your gears in a PDK transmission is also something else ! Thanks for your videos: I love watching them!

Great Nick! I compare this transmission with the latest generation on the Lotus Exige, a blast to drive both of them! Funny "if you forget if you are on 3rd or 1st " never happened to me, no need for a dashboard indicator, the position of the hand immediatley tells you where you are! A hundred years of manual transmissions without an indicator should be a solid argument :)

Nick - thanks for an excellent review. Watching your channel over the last few years was a big part of the reason I bought a 911 last year - I have an 992 Carrera S with PDK in exactly the red/black colour scheme you tested and have already put 5000 miles on it so far - totally love it. But my next 911 might well be a 7MT...

That's why I got a mustang GT. I went for a test drive and suddenly realized that it was now or never for getting a couple with a V8 MT before they became obsolete.
Agreed- long term the manual gearboxes always do better on longer term resale than the auto type gear boxes. I bought my M2 with manual and it’s a delight. However, the 6th gear revs way too high for motorway cruising speeds- so I can tell they really went for DCT sales here. Thanks for the advice on purchasing it. I’m shipping it from back home to Australia where I live (your country isn’t it?). One love for nz and US!
Offtopic: those clear rearlights are amazing! They look so cool. Never expected that.. now I need to see them in low light and night. Because I love the look of the whole red stripe at the back of the car. Fantastic video again Nick! Thanks
Great video Nick! Thanks for showing us the 7sp, that console looks more like a Porsche now...that Braun shaver was not doing it and will not do it for me...I would add that the launch control feature is a big plus for many, so a PDK is the only way to go...but the cafe stds has played a part...just as the number of 4cylinders in their Lineup.
How is it that no one else has put out a video of a 992 manual, that isn't just Porsche footage? Awesome job Nick! Plus we got proper informed views not just a show reel. As per Nick's comments, seems pretty clear that Porsche almost doesn't want people to know about it and wants to just sell PDKs.
I really like the "guard red" in combination with the sport design front fascia. (the GTS is going to be a winner!) It really does look special (for a non turbo/gt3). The painted mirrors do add a lot! Mamba green would be nice as well.
You're lucky : it's (still) not available in Belgium :-( I'm really not interested how good de PDK is, you're more connected to the car if you have a manual transmission... Fingers crossed and hope Porsche get some sense and make it available for Belgium/Europe.
Yes agree with manual, cant wait to test drive one of these 992's some day. But the old 996 still is a fun car. But honestly, what guy with a decent interest for cars cant drive a manual ?
Great review, thank you Nick. I think you might be the first ‘Tuber worldwide with a review of the 992 manual transmission! Even the The Getawayer did not have the pleasure of testing a manual 992, yet. And he’s in Germany, has good contacts @Porsche. Gee mate, what a lovely gearbox the new one is.. your enthusiasm is really contagious (bad word these days, I know). I would buy one without testing one, solely based on what you say and think. Over here in Europe, the manual is finally configurable as of this week. With a whole bunch of new options like new leather combinations and other stuff. Even the steering column in leather is back! Once again, thanks Nick and #StaySafe, especially in Connecticut! (and stay current on your PPL) Cheers, Irwin 🤟
Writing from Germany....always drove manual - mainly BMW and Porsche´s. Now I am on PDK. It's funny because historically my American friends always had cars with automatic transmissions - we had manuals, now we are all driving PDK´s over here and you drive manuals over there, go figure :)
@@tenchinhanu yes but they are drying out - it used to be the "cheaper choice" and it the US it's now the "ambitious driver choice", its cool to learn "heal and toe". In Germany now the cars in question are 70% auto. With new technologies coming manual will be a bygone technology. I just find it interesting the difference of culture.
@@bavariancarenthusiast2722 I agree, it's interesting how things change! That being said, autos have just become that much better. Old 4-speed autos in the American cars of old used to be terrible. Modern PDKs or ZF autos, on the other hand, are not an inconvenience anymore. Quite to the contrary: faster, more comfortable, and even more economical than manuals. So I can totally see why more and more people, including Germans, go that route, at least in more expensive or powerful cars. But one thing's for sure: Let's hope that our beloved manuals continue existing, especially in sports cars, for many more years to come!
Thank you Nick, you touch a question that is important, fuel ⛽️ consumption. In Europe where the WLTP is a bit tuff on the manual creating difficulties for Porsche to get them certified. For years, Europe has always been in lead when it comes to sales of manual, as far as I know, since 2018 US has taken that position.
There's no comparison between the 2. The 911 is twice the machine the C8 is, and it will hold its value much longer than the C8. And you'll have a manual turbo'd 911 that you can throw a 2-3 thousand dollar tune on and have around 550hp
The manual transmission in the 991.1 was awful in my opinion....long throws and baulky shifter feel. I heard the made some minor improvements on 991.2 but when I drove it seemed only marginally better ....if at all. Glad to hear that this new gearbox seems to be a return to the great gearbox’s of the past 👍🏻
I have a manual transmission Carrera T, short shifter absolutely love it. There is an aftermarket shifter by Numeric Racing, lot of good reviews about it.
I haven’t seen any reference to a redesign of the pdk shift lever. I love the manual... but that comment got me curious as to what changes they have planned.
Nick, thanks for this. I’ve had 5 cars with a manual (RX-7, 944, 997.1, 2008 M3 & 991.1) and plan on trading my 2019 M5-Competition in a year or two. I was on the fence about the manual until this video. I’ll be sure to call you for dealer contact when I’m ready.
Sports design front and side decals look amazing. Got to admit I was not a fan of the looks of the 992 on launch, and I felt the PDK "thing" looked ridiculous (and I still dislike the move to a touchscreen/digital interior), however the fact that this actually has a manual now... this car is growing on me!
I had an E46 M3 6spd manual. I put an Autosolutions short shift kit and a ZHP weighted knob in it. It was amazing! I now have a 2017 MK7 GTI 6spd manual. I’ve put a Stage 2 DKM clutch in it, Forge Motorsport short shifter, and metal bushings in it. It’s pretty decent. I’ve recently installed a Raceseng Circuit Sphere 100 weighted shift knob in it, and my god, this shift knob is amazing! By far best shift knob I’ve ever felt! I also return better mpg’s than any DSG owner I’ve talked to. I would say part of that is due to my custom tune and the gearing in this car, but I have around 430 crank hp and 410 ft/lb tq., and I get 38-40mpg’s in my GTI. Show me another car with that much power that returns that good of gas mileage. I’ll wait....
You ARE cool, Nick. The world is full of people complaining about manual cars being replaced by automatics. Mostly none of them will ever buy the cars they are complaining about or actually get a manual when they get a new car. You actually put your money where your mouth was when buying your old Porsche. It's almost a t-shirt slogan: Put your mouth where the money is :)
Finally... you’ve achieved the impossible. Noooo one else has a MT 992 on the tube

It was in kilometers, wink, wink!
I think when you buy a stick and "some idiot in your family" can't drive it is a plus😂
Great review as always, you just can’t beat a Guards Red 911 👍👍👍
Agreed- long term the manual gearboxes always do better on longer term resale than the auto type gear boxes. I bought my M2 with manual and it’s a delight. However, the 6th gear revs way too high for motorway cruising speeds- so I can tell they really went for DCT sales here. Thanks for the advice on purchasing it. I’m shipping it from back home to Australia where I live (your country isn’t it?). One love for nz and US!
The manual transmission gear lever, the only protrusion men prefer to be shorter...
BTW the Carrera S is a turbo car.
He said Turbo not turbo
Just discovered your channel a couple of weeks back - superb combo, cars, choppers and dogs etc. Excellent !!!
I think I've found my dream car
I geuss you never heard a manual GT3! You will have a new dream car after watching it.
Offtopic: those clear rearlights are amazing! They look so cool. Never expected that.. now I need to see them in low light and night. Because I love the look of the whole red stripe at the back of the car. Fantastic video again Nick! Thanks
This one frame at 10:57 made me laugh
So subliminal, but so true :)
Glitch in the matrix... Ha! Save the Manual!!!
It even made me laugh twice. First i had to play the video at 0.25 speed which makes Nick a drunk bastard, and second the message at the timeframe. :D
Nice shirt !
I played wack-a-mole with my pause button for 5 but I got it
Amen brother. My 911 997. 1 is manual and I love it. What a joy it was to teach my 16 year old to drive the stick. So much more of a drive.
Ah, Nick, good to see you and your toys, stuffed and otherwise. Always a joy, helped along with a cocktail in hand.
The manual transmission, way cooler than dating your cousin
Your Hot Cousin lol 😂😂
Dating your cousin was never cool to begin with
How is it that no one else has put out a video of a 992 manual, that isn't just Porsche footage? Awesome job Nick! Plus we got proper informed views not just a show reel. As per Nick's comments, seems pretty clear that Porsche almost doesn't want people to know about it and wants to just sell PDKs.
"If your wife or boyfriend wants to drive the car",.. LOL of course Nick assumes we all have both.
Well he also thinks your wife or boyfriend could be your cousin.
He should make a t-shirt with that now! lol "PDKs are only for those who have a wife AND a boyfriend"
I was thinking the same thing. Although he may have a point, having a wife and and a boyfriend would probably be a lot of fun.
🙄😂😂😂
I really like the "guard red" in combination with the sport design front fascia. (the GTS is going to be a winner!) It really does look special (for a non turbo/gt3). The painted mirrors do add a lot! Mamba green would be nice as well.
You're lucky : it's (still) not available in Belgium :-( I'm really not interested how good de PDK is, you're more connected to the car if you have a manual transmission... Fingers crossed and hope Porsche get some sense and make it available for Belgium/Europe.
Ah : I'm wrong... seems they do have it on the S-model ! I've looked only to the "base"-911 for months.
Love this car in guards red. Thanks for sharing it. This is the exact Porsche I will be buying.
Is it better than Honda ones? I love Honda manuals, especially older ones, but never driven a manual Porsche to compare.
I love my Corolla diesel manual and I have my third now.porsche is for those who have dad's dollars
Yes. I went from a 2008 Si to a '19 Carrera T.
Euro Civic Hatch has a absolutely superb manual transmission has done for generations.
ten2055 good to know. Nice upgrade btw
Your Porsche videos are fantastic. Very enjoyable and informative. I have a 991.1 PDK. I hope to get a 992 manual at some point.
Never clicked so fast! Btw bring back the pdk shirt :)
Please do
I always love your videos. Such a fantastic video this time. Thanks for all the effort making this. It’s a beautiful manual.
Writing from Germany....always drove manual - mainly BMW and Porsche´s. Now I am on PDK. It's funny because historically my American friends always had cars with automatic transmissions - we had manuals, now we are all driving PDK´s over here and you drive manuals over there, go figure :)
Still many people in Germany who continue driving stick though ;)
I been shopping a base 911 vs a c8, and this whole “manual” thing is making me lean toward spending more for the porsche...
There's no comparison between the 2. The 911 is twice the machine the C8 is, and it will hold its value much longer than the C8.
And you'll have a manual turbo'd 911 that you can throw a 2-3 thousand dollar tune on and have around 550hp
A 911 is a event. The C8 is a product
911 is definitely the way to go bro
Tadge Juechter deserves to be punished for ruining the Corvette.
sunnohh go for the manual, you won’t regret it
Nick Murray! A Ray of sunshine in this present world of Sh*t. You never fail to make me laugh and brighten up my day. Stay safe Nick.
So Porsche has finally cracked MX-5 level shifting? 😉
I just love mine. Just got it, and it's my first 911. So much better for cruising than my 14 CaymanS. First 7spd manual in Washington State.
Kiwi: “Today, everybody is dating their cousin”. Yeah, righto mate
My theory on the transmission indicator delay is that it doesn’t rely on a switch but rather correlation between engine rpm and speed
the pdk shirt made me laugh so hard. i froze it right at that moment and my wife gave me a look! lmfao!
Sounds like my Up Gti. Good video and a lovely car, thanks.
“It’s so short you can do it with just your wrist”. Hmmmm....
Love your reviews. A little irreverent and completely believable and enjoyable. Thank you!
Had a 991.2 manual. Throws still too long and not great feel.
I have a manual transmission Carrera T, short shifter absolutely love it. There is an aftermarket shifter by Numeric Racing, lot of good reviews about it.
jameswillard1 your dramatic opinion is now in question. What gearboxes of the past are you referring to?
Mr manual the only way to go in a sports car. Thanks Porsche for keeping it around. Great review!!!
A man and his beloved stick 😀
Thanks for the video, I love how you show the beauty of the manual transmission! I agree the car in Guards red looks fantastic.
5:54 you can go from 4th to 3rd!? This transmission is remarkable!
I haven’t seen any reference to a redesign of the pdk shift lever. I love the manual... but that comment got me curious as to what changes they have planned.
Seriously pay extra for a Porsche sticker on the side that distracts and cheapens the car’s looks.
Hahahah I can’t understand nothing with your texas accent.
Wait what 😂
Ehhhhm ... Texas what? :)
Oh Sam....
Honestly this is the most beautiful manual transmission system. The protection agianst money shifting is such a beautiful thing to see.
Great review Nick. Best part of the 992 stick shift? Not the least bit phallic. They really nailed that one.
These 992 cars are stunning. Only thing is 991.2 rear styling is cleaner. Cheers.
Watched the video again that guards red looks awesome on the 992 with the black wheels. Really cool
It's almost a t-shirt slogan: Put your mouth where the money is :)
the trend towards automatics goes beyond just high end cars. some people absolutely hate them, and you shouldn't try and speak for them (us).
Great video I own a 981 Boxster GTS manual and just love it. Cheers!
Thanks for covering Porsche's manual transmission. You got one of the top videos on it. 🙏🏿🙏🏿😊😉
You were at your comedic best in this video! Great stuff!
Nick, could you perhaps compare the manual in 992 to the one in 718 GTS 4.0 some time in the future?
