Oops! Yours is not the old fashioned metal cutter opener. It is the seal cutter which cuts the seal on the outside of the rim leaving the safe rolled rim intact. The old fashioned metal cutters have a cutting blade that cuts from the inside of the rim directly into the steel leaving a razor sharp lid that falls in no matter what position you hold it because its still cutting the steel from inside the rim.
Nope the opener he is using is one of the old blade ones, he's cutting below the rolled rim. You can see the sharp edges, and bladeless designs don't clamp like this one.

If you’re a kid from the 60s or 70s, you would know this. Automatic can opener is used to open the cans that way. I still open cans that way. This is nothing new.
I’m not a big can food guy but if I use it I do the traditional method but I don’t go all the way so I can strain the liquid and then use a spoon to bend the lid upwards to empty the can
So I've dont it the "wrong way" the whole time. thought that was how you were supposed to use it since some have the little beak looking thing to separate the lid off of the can.
So… could you demonstrate by opening a can of tomato sauce in that same way but on an electric can opener? Hint: make sure you have plenty of paper towels handy… oh, and another can of tomato sauce! 😂

Another way to strain out liquid is to cut it 90% and put your finger on the lid so it won’t all fall off

I’ve been using a bladeless can opener all this time. Sure I pay a little more. I reuse the can & “lid” for planting.

I just leave a tiny portion uncut, then it lifts itself up and it’ll stay attached when you throw it out.

As a recommendation I’d always take wrappers off of cans & give it a good rinse w/ some soap
There are ones specifically for doing it the 2nd way that won't accidentally get paper bits in your can
They also don't leave a sharp edge on either the can or lid.
