    preferred the game
    In the game, the reason why no one could ever leave was because Himiko conjured storms of rage that tore anything that approached yamatai to pieces...something Lara never believed existed which was a major point into her becoming the tomb raider in the first place....

      Stargate: All "gods" are actually aliens
      Hercules/Xena: Gods are very humanlike in their behavior (well, they really are in greek mythology)
      And that's just thinking about it for 20 seconds.
      In fact, can you name one example of a pagan god being an actual powerful force that is unexplained? I can only think of examples for a judeo-christian god. You could maybe make a point for Indiana Jones 2 (Kali) but it's not quite clear if that was actually a god or some other sort of magic.

    • @ryanjenkins6899
      @ryanjenkins6899 6 років тому +11

      Yaldabaoth you’re essentially saying that gods arent gods if they arent invisble to everyone and completely unexplained. Most of the gods you are referring to are not this way in the myths that they come from. So why would you expect them to be portrayed. I thought you were referring to gods that were somehow diminished or underpowered or otherwise portrayed differently from the subject material. Thats like expecting a portrayal of jesus that doesnt involve him living as a man. Humanoid or human like doesnt mean just an overpowered human. Greek, roman and norse gods human like characteristics. As do many hindu gods. So what is your point? And one of the most obvious examples of what you’re asking for you discount by saying that we dont know if it’s actually a god.

      Change a few character names, Lara's main outfit and exterior design of Himeko's temple in the movie and you almost have an original film. Oh, and the title, going to have to change that as well.

    • @memnarch129
      @memnarch129 5 років тому

      @Clinical Depression Its more due to the growing Chinese market. China is highly superstitious and anything involving the supernatural/gods/ghosts/etc is taboo. So in order to appeal to that huge market movies chop out and rewrite these things to be explainable through science. Reason things like Pacific Rim get away with this even though it seems to fit into that taboo category is while the Kaiju and where they come from are fantastical they can be scientifically explained and are shown to be physical, aka mortal, and can be killed/destroyed.

    While I'm disappointed the movie didn't bring over the character of Sam and her relation to Himiko, as I thought Sam and Lara's relationship were what made the game feel so special, I thought the change to Himiko was at least a novel idea. Yeah I enjoyed that quite a bit.
      One thing that always bothered me with the Tomb Raider games -who- was the overt supernatural.
      I liked Rise of the Tomb Raider because of how long I had to play until I actually encountered any supernatural.
      I'm okay with some supernatural (unexplained natural occurrences), like at the end, but if it's supernatural halfway through, you kinda lost me.
      At that point I'm just thinking, "Alright discovery made, lets head out and get some back up"
      If it's at the end, it's like the carrot on the stick that keeps me interested in the story.

      Not dragons but in the Shadowrun universe a magic virus turns various races into vampires, ghouls (not actual undead in this case) and so on. There's also the effect of the heightened magic level on DNA, turning parts of the pre-awakening human population into elves, dwarves, trolls, orcs and sometimes even drakes (that is human/dragon shapeshifters, usually servants to the greater Dragons).

    I enjoyed the movie’s acting and action, but was disappointed to see it throw away the game’s central message, dismissing it as just a virus. Nothing mysterical. And it deviated too much from the game to possibly adapt the sequel games into sequel movies by resurrecting her father

Not to say that it's my favorite game. There are many games I like a lot more, but as far as Tomb Raider goes, the 2012 reboot and Rise of the Tomb Raider are my personal favorites. Rise is particularly interesting because while you start to see what PTSD is doing to her in the first game after she's forced to kill people, it gets front-and-center attention in the sequel, where she starts the game taking obscene risks by choice rather than by necessity.

    You know what makes a strong female game character? Not focusing solely on the fact that shes a woman, and making her a competent character.

    • @Xehanort10
      @Xehanort10 6 років тому +10

      That makes a strong female character whether they're in a film, game, TV series or anything else. Non feminist writers know how to write good female characters who can stand up for themselves, kick ass, are entertaining and interesting and also flawed and likeable and aren't portrayed as flawless, perfect, Mary Sue goddesses. Feminist writers on the other hand think strong woman= total bitch who mocks men at every opportunity, is portrayed as perfect and good at everything just because and thinks a character like that should be liked just because they're a woman or they cry sexism. An easy way to tell if a film has a feminist involved is if all men in the film are portrayed as stupid, insane or evil since they're convinced that the only way to make women look good is to make men look bad even though good writers have both strong men and women in their films. Feminists also hypocritically accuse men of wanting real life women and fictional female characters to act a certain way even though feminists want women to act a certain way too and if they don't act the way they want they say they've been "brainwashed by the patriarchy" and say female characters who aren't done the way they want are "too masculine."

    • @Palmieres
      @Palmieres 6 років тому +10

      @@Xehanort10 No. A writer who *can't* write a female character as a badass without focusing on her gender is the opposite of a feminist. Feminism strives to elevate women's rights to match men's right, not to surpass them - that's the literal definition of feminism. What you're referring to is "3rd wave feminism", which must *always* carry that prefix so it is not mistaken for real feminism.

    • @Palmieres
      @Palmieres 6 років тому +2

      @@brandondavis7777 Maybe you should look up the definition of feminism in a dictionary. The movement started with the advocating of the advancement of female rights and representation to *match* men's, not surpass them. The defenition in a dictionary still states that.
      This was necessary because women did not enjoy the same rights as men, and in some contexts the situation has not changed. In some contexts we still need feminism.It's not gendering a cause anymore than "racing" the cause when it comes to civil rights.

    However, Lara Croft in the reboot is well written and is very much what that title should describe. She is strong in her own way, and very capable
