- Hiking on the tundra outside Longyearbyen on Svalbard. These guys have been eating grass all summer. They are now fat and cute!

Ah, memories... I can see the endless fields covered with snow, the screams of deer running in a circle. My childhood was spent in the tundra. The heart aches and asks for the past.

Hehe, yes. I didn't feel safe when the big buck circled around me in the end to check me out. Also I had a friend with me carrying a rifle scouting for polar bears.

These are obviously herded/farmed Reindeer and not wild migrating Reindeer.
There is no farming or agriculture at all on the Svalbard archipelago. All animals of the Svalbard reindeer subspecies are wild, endemic only to these islands. They are easily recognisable by the small body size, short legs and proportionally large head (compared to other reindeer subspecies). The Svalbardrein subspecies (latin: Rangifer tarandus platyrhynchus) have evolved a body shape that is more optimal to maintain body temperature and preserve energy in a very harsh environment at 77th to 80th parallel North. From the depictions in this video, we can easily recognise the short legs and the comparatively large head/broad muzzle, and we can see that they have got their winter fur (whiter and thicker than summer fur), already.
