Nice video Steve & Chris. I think the speed pedelec has great potential for commuting to get people out of their cars and save the environment. I drive with bike in car to the Surrey hills, but with a speed pedelec I could do it as quick on my bike, but it needs to be legal. A video where you go throught the full process to make things road legal in the UK: paperwork, licence, insurance, modifications, costs etc would be really helpful. This might encourage a few riders to take this route, then once this path becomes well trodden it makes it much easier for others to follow. Specialist firms might pop up to provide insurance and help with paperwork, then eventually the process might become trivial.
You would think they would do anything reasonable to get people out of gas cars in the city. But no, e-scooters, e-unicycles are banned, and laughable speed limits is what we get.
Exactly what needs to happen. I derestricted my Specialized Levo and still find it hard going keeping up with roadies. The gearing stops you doing silly speeds on an ebike anyway. It’s about being sensible and riding to the conditions and surroundings and more importantly if there are pedestrians in your surrounding area. Don’t get me wrong I think there should be limits as to how fast people can go. I just think here in the UK the restriction is a little too slow? I think 20mph which equates to 32.1kph is spot on.
I live here in the US and I rarely hit the cutout speed (when on the trail) with either of my bikes, that being said, I would get tired of that "restriction" that you guys have to deal with. It may only be 5 mph, but it is a big difference...I would vote for the (cutout) limit to be at least the same as ours...
Agreed. I hit the cut out pretty much immediately during my commute to and from work. But on the trails where I ride when camping that 20mph will make you have to change your underwear.....Mind you I'm currently on a hardtail. We'll see how things change when I get my Fezzari next month.
I derestricted my bike a few weeks ago, and damn, I’m smiling even more and it just makes sense now. I can wheelie without the front wheel being thrown to the ground when I hit 25km/t, and the flow along flat trails is fantastic. What surprised me the most is that I use Turbo mode way less, and actually my riding style calmed down. I’m almost never pushing 30 km/t and above which speaks against the strain on the motor and battery argument against derestricting. If anything it might prolong my battery capacity if I keep using eco/trail mode more than turbo as I did before. Time will tell, would be cool if someone did a more scientific test. Thats Just my personal experience.
Yep i love my bbshd with 3200w controller . I build my own bikes its way cheaper and you can upgrade what you want. Mines got 2 piece 203mm rotors and 4 piston brakes .
like a lot of comments here I see and feel a big difference after derestricting my E bike. Swapping out my knobblies for road tyres and added mudguards I now have joy to ride bike on road and trail. On eco I find my cadence cannot keep up with the standard ring so now moving upto a larger ring for more balanced speed to air resistance point. Also as you mentioned owners see the law is pointless so are going around the restrictions. One important thing is education, every rider should be mindful of others.
I love Spitzing bikes, they look awesome! I'm glad to finally hear Steve saying how ridiculous 25kph limit is, because up to now he was defending it :) Of course 25kph limit is irrelevant on technical trail, but sometimes we also ride our ebikes on the roads, either for commute or fun, and on the flats where this limit becomes absurd. It absolutely makes no sense when you can ride normal bike 30kph at will, not to mention road bikes that go 35-40kph easily on the flat and you don't need registration, insurance or full head helmet for it.
exactly for this reason, everybody should have the e-bike of max speed the rider himself can develop :) for example, I did 52kph max sprint on flat surface on my mtb ..so technically, i surpassed that stupid limit over 2 times just with my own legs. Now after years of dreaming, I have an ebike (i built it myself as custom , because public shop ebikes are low power expensive machines - 250w? come on.... ) ... i did rear hub 1500W conversion .. i cannot be happier! it has restricted mode, but also unrestricted and ..damn ...that thing can push 55-60kph on flat like nothing :D ..of course it is not legal here, but sometimes i use that mode...and.... i have smile from ear to ear ... :D ..
I've got a bafang 750w and set the cutout at 30mph (only available in assist level 9) which is a good top end for me, but im extremely comfortable and confident on a bike, my average speed is 11mph-16mph depending on what type of riding im doing. 20mph cutout is a good base limit i think, 15.5mph is too slow, especially for the prices some of these bikes cost. I used to be able to get 45mph with a bigger chainring, but I found that too much. OK if you have a super long commute on good condition A roads maybe, but not for normal pothole city streets. Almost everyone thinks the legal limit is stupid, and it is, which is evidenced by the pathetic uptake rates of ebikes compared to other countries, which is an absolute shame considering how much fun they are and how much they can replace a car. Maybe the politicians can sort out the law regarding ebikes once they stop having their brexit tantrums. Then again i think a lot of the cycling advocates we have are attacking the issues wrong, you can build all the cycle lanes you want, but almost all the ones in my city are useless, they go no where, are too narrow, in extremely poor condition, have overgrowth or have cars parked or driven in them.
I have a bbshd 1000w but a 3200w controller that can do over 60kph . You just have to ride within your means . I have 203mm rotors and shimano 4 piston brakes aswel . You should be able to do what you want but if you crash or injure sombody you should be liable . You will always have idiots out there that injure people from being stupid . No use putting limits on everything . People love being told what to do by their gov employees with no clue .
If you want to ride a motorbike, just pass a test mate. If you have a driver's licence, a cheap CBT nets you a cat P (you don't have to continue doing CBTs, just doing one validates it) and you can ride the Spritzing M1 with no issues here in the UK. That tool rocking up like a power ranger on a s-pedelec is just being a knobber for dramatisation. You just need a road approved helmet many of which ain't too far off looking like a mtb helmet or even an open face scooter helmet would do. You'd struggle to notice the difference.

I have the spitzing original version R, with no restriction at all, it’s a true beast, either on or off road, climbing up frequently at +35kph and +45kph on singles, making of anything a fun thing to run, and any other bike (even if somehow better) a joke. Having the ability to ride anything you want, for at least 50km of range without taking care either of the battery or your legs, it is something you need to try to be able understand. The fun thing is that even the full power mode is just a challenge to master, crazy power for riding at full speed, it kills you more than anything, and at the same time you can still get the ebike regular feeling with mode power 1 cutting at 32kph. I think that this restriction is obviously something needed because of the potential of bad use some people could do of such power (even if I have never been worried in any situation neither by the way I use it or by the police). It is obviously a clear problem when it gets crowded or have a bad attitude, but out of these situations I think restricted or not isn’t a big deal for security. Even though, i would truly see the problem if bunch of people where riding together these things at full power out of a defined race track, that would get very scary for anyone in and nearby... even though there are already bunches of people riding a lot of legal things together in this king of scary way... so why ebikes should be more ? On road the main issue, is that cars don’t care about bikes, they think that they don’t go fast, so you are as good as invisible, they see you coming and they cross your road all the time, so having a back plate and insurance won’t keep you from dying ! Being out of law in these situation might even be for the better, since you can’t get involved in any kind of accident, you might even have a more appropriate way to ride safely. To give this a conclusion, the main problem still is the place that bikes are given, is just not enough. Even if the law, here in France allow you to ride in reverse where speed in limit is 30kph, you still get horn from the cars coming at full speed in front of you, and I don’t need to add anything more to that ! 😂
You are spot on! I ordered the same bike a month ago. I feel I have the experience to be able to handle this bike and only use the higher speeds in rare straight away clear smooth situations. But not everyone may have that experience. Happy Riding!
Hey guy's. I think you need to mention the 25km limiter is actually a hazard at times when your descending and need a quick peddle stroke to lift the front. (drops, quick peddle before a jump etc) If this happens as the power drops off then it can catch you out. The limiter is dangerous. I've removed mine from my Kenevo by following the youtube crack. I don't think I'd buy an e-bike that I couldn't remove the limiter.
Good video ,I love that bike,I'd rather that than the haibike flyon with the TQ-Motor. With Spitzing you can set it 1000w continuous. I ride slightly higher watts on my GT. I have the new 2020 cyc x1pro 3000w middrive with 180nm of torque, it pumps out 2200w continuous , it would fly by the speed spitzing like it flys by the non speed version on the flat. There are speed pedalec and there are fast ebikes.
One intresting fact to have in mind is that in Sweden you are not alowed to ride s-pedalec out in the forest. Just on ordinary roads. It’s not like the cops lurking in the forest. BUT it could be problems if anything happends.
why are you always argue "unrestricted eMTB's make no sense on trails" when you are in Alps? Most riders don't live in such steep terrain and benefit from unrestricted eMTB's even on trails!!! So why you always pic the corner cases "flat roads" and "steep Alp terrain" for your argumentation???
Hi I'm in UK. Thinking of making an E purchase at back end of this year beginning of next. I had my eye on 2 bikes not yet released. Being interested in the Tq motor. The stork e:drenik gtq was the first. Then I came across this. Very pricy bike. So like the 1050wh battery. Although as stated that probably equates too about 800 with the power. Still. A bug improvement over current gen. Seems a difficult choice. And hard to source being in the UK. Anyone else have thoughts on these bikes?
Yes, as others said up the speed to 35 km. On another note, not sure why bosch on the new CX increased the power in every mode as the previous model was fine. In my mind would be better to extend range, but maybe that's just me.
The shop I got my 25kph bike from were I’m pretty sure selling speed pedelecs without registering them or anything. I’m guessing that’s happening all over the place. It’s basically impossible to police it so long as you don’t go blasting through urban areas in turbo mode. And yeah the more I think about it, the more I would like to see the same 20mph limit everywhere that the US has. I get passed by roadies who are going way faster than me all the time.
steve mansfield Problem is that there will be people who do blast through dense urban areas. So I don’t condone the shop’s actions for that reason. Just observing that it’s easy to get away with.
Until you have a crash and are not legal or insured because you are riding illegally then its not so easy to slip under the radar. 32 is fine for emtb , we have it here and it does not detract from the ride at all. On road 40 is better and thankfully my country has no imposed ebike speed limits other than the regular bike speed limits

45K at min to feel safe riding in traffic. I have people cutting me off all the time when I ride my 32kph Ebike. Almost never happens riding my Stromer at 48kph.
24-26mph seems to be the point cars stop doing dangerous overtakes. Although saying that I did have a guy blast pass me while I was a naughty boy doing 32 in a 30 only for him to have to slam on his brakes and I overtake him 3-4 seconds later! I wonder if it will it ever be safe in traffic?

Some loser male in his 60's. I did not want to get charged with Elderly bashing so I moved on. I was riding at 18 mph. I do not think he would have tried it at 28 mph though.

A guy I saw stopped on a blind bend during a busy school drop off period and had me loudly explain in depth why it was dangerous and stupid. I did catch him a few days later parked outside my house and walking his kids the hundred meters or so to the gate.
Its like no-one in the comments has experienced riding a moped. Get on a 50cc moped and see how traffic treats you. It's exactly the same as a cyclist in many respects. If you need 45kph to feel safe in traffic, you're going to be sorely disappointed.
I live in a flat country and usually i drive my bike 20-25 km/h. So don`t see any reason spend money for e-bike, if it has 25 km/h restriction. You know, what i mean)))
Lol, so judging from your drag race off the line I'd be interested to see what the peak amps actually are as to me that look close off the line. If they are as similar as I think then really we're talking about a speed limiter. And you reinforce that with your trial ride. So why can't you have the best of all worlds and just remove the speed limit and limit the setup by what the bikes can do. But we're getting there. Much better video and the conclusion although it felt like it pained Steve to say it said a lot. Basically the bike is better derestricted but the legal requirements are the thing that makes the experience less than it could / should be.
In New Zealand we have a 32 km limit, 30 on the road on the way to the trails is more than fast enough if you are only wearing a t shirt and shorts. 25 would be bloody annoying.
safety certificate for weight cycling helmets has 1 European Certificate! and this certificate is issued at crash test and it’s 25 km / h. Safety is an individual matter.
in germany it is not allowed to drive in the forest with an approved spedelec. It is also not allowed to go on a bike path. you have to drive on the street. beautiful old germany ... not
That's fucked up. The forest part i mean, the bike path part is understandable. Any bicycle on which i can surpass 20 kmph and i'm cycling on the road, even if cycling on the road is ilegal. I have a normal Pedelec and I really love it. You can ride a bike without being exhausted afterwards.

Why these don't come in like 2x11? I'm totally not into speed but torque... I do get myself in a lot of steep or otherwise difficult terrain where 16km/h is *fast* Basically no emtb out there has a granny chainring! With the 40+T casette and a 22ish chainring that could go in knee-deep snow or 45° slippery, boudery slopes, slow, steady and safe. And I'm not even considering those motors that sport a tiny chainring with a 3x multiplier at the crank arm.
My wife got an EMTB so we can ride together but I’m still waiting for her on every flat section. We have to ride on roads to get to the trails and a restriction on 25kph is simply too slow.
You guys are softening up after being very anti speed or chipped bikes for a while. I noticed that after Steve went to the US and rode a rental bike with 20 mph motor. I think that the S version of an E bike has a number of changes to allow type approval (e.g. brake levers with a different profile), and generally are built to handle the higher speed. Off road neither one is going top speed all the time, so yes it's not an advantage, but as you admit on the level or commuting it's awesome to have the S version. But a great video and good to see a more balanced view on the channel 👍
No. 25 kph for assistance is okay. I dont want there to be even 1% chance of assholes demanding cyclists carry license plates.... with a road bike or a triathlon bike you can go at up to 70 kmph without any license or license plates or anything. If cyclists have motor support at 30 or 35 or 45 kph it could harm non-motorized cyclists. HOWEVER.... the 250 watts limits is CRIMINAL! If the motor shuts at 25 kph WHY have a limit on wattage? Or a compromise solution: accelerometer integrated into motor by law so it can be stuck at 250 on flat or desdending terrain but slowly rise the wattage as uphill climb becomes more steep. 250 for going uphil is .... nothing. completely nothing. The fact asshole politicians decided ebikes shouldn't produce enough power to be able to go at 25 kph even on steep climbs is... just being assholes.
Having a Haibike Nduro 8 with Performance CX motor which I have de restricted, it’s not just about the extra speed. I would gladly leave restricted if it were law at 35kmph (22mph) as that is a much useable speed. 25 kph cut off is just a bit too low. I use mine off road in both limited and de restricted mode as the Bosch box allows the switching between it.
We will need speed pedalic IMO to develop more robust tyres, gears, motors and protective wear. On road or fire tracks speed pedalic serve a purpose as in faster times but on those fire tracks I'm out in the countryside enjoying it. Up hill though off road I have never thought I need more than 15mph.
Reise and Müller do this with their wheels, brakes etc being certified for speed pedelecs. But yeh I can't imagine if cheap ebikes are fitted with speed pedelec engines without making the recommended changes
As a novice and older rider I would like to see more on scenic rides in various countries. I plan to visit Europe and would like to know where would be good to go for easy rides but with plenty of scenery. I would be hiring an EBike.
The limit is a real pain in the ass. It seems to kick in quite low. I'm not looking at going fast on roads but fuck me it's quite limiting and I think quite dangerous you can't go a similar speed to traffic.
It is only UK that tells the S-Pedelec riders to wear the motorbike helmet. You can wear just a bicycle helmet on an S-Pedelec elsewhere in the EU and not wear any helmet on a pedelec. Secondly, do not the e-MTB brakes cut off the motor power? How strange. Is the motor unprotected? So if you Steve continue pedalling on a fire-road after applying brakes, does the motor still push against the brakes? Very strange.
and the S-spedelec cost like 9000€. Takes 3+ months to get it registered. Buying all the extra gear you need, the insurances etc. Its just not worth buying a Spedelec. too many laws/rules around it. Atleast if you buy a commuter.
Gimme a break. I bet you come to complete stop at every stop sign and obey all speed laws too? Reality nobody is ever going to bother with insurance just because a speed pedelec can keep up with analog roadies in lycra.

And if i use it on the bicyclelanes and accident happens. its just not worth the extra 20km. takes me 18min to work with my Specialized Vado 5.0 -2020 model. that cost me 4600€. Buying the Spedelec would cost me 6600. + all the crap that comes with it. Just not worth it. f you live in a small town where noone care. sure i would tune it to do 100kmh. I trust my own ability at the bike, but i dont trust people around me. Drunk or sleep deprived drivers etc.
I don't think the unrestricting is about the speed but more about the long climbs, I think yous need to talk about that in more detail and if it helps much.
Genuine question, I don't know just my brain cannot find the logic: By pedaling there's no legal issue to take the bike to 30mph (or more) on the road but having assisted electric help up to that speed makes it ILLEGAL. So the speed is not the issue, the safety is not the issue makes me think that these Governments are only worried about making money out of it. However, being under 30mph in traffic IMO is more dangerous instead of keeping up with the city limit 30mph.
Not interested in increasing my bike's speed as I'm not bothered about going as fast as possible but it would be interesting if someone could create a way to reprogramme the motor firmware to increase the torque or at least change the torque output curve to help the climbing ability.
this is what i would want. I wanna be able to pedal feeling like i'm in the easiest gear on flat pavement while going up a 45 degree incline on rooty dirt trails. lol.
On bafang motors they have made luna cycles software to get into the program to change settings . You can buy usb cables to get into it . People have made programs to just plug in and load into the controllers . I have a controller pumping out 3200w if i want .
Steve just keeps beating this dead horse topic with a closed mind. No, unrestricted bikes ARE faster, just NOT EVERYWHERE. If you are going to subject them to tests which give them no opportunity to excel, like trials..they won't. Having some experience owning both a restricted (US..32km/h) & unrestricted (55lb. 1600w mid drive w/throttle) I have an opinion based on actually riding both. If you ride on fairly open trails (enough to go over 35km/h) the unrestricted bike is much faster & much more fun. If the hill you are riding can be climbed over the 20mph, you will. If you think a restricted bike is as fast downhill, it's not on all downhills. When you get to an open area where you may be going over the limit of the restricted bike, you can increase speed on the unrestricted bike. Some of us ride bikes where the faster we go, the more fun we have. Obviously, not everyone's cup of tea, but your constant disparagement of unrestricted bikes has grown tedious.
rather get a motorcycle thsn an s pedelec! the biggest difference is that s pedelecs go under mopeds/motorcycles and therefore can't use explicit bicycle roads. that's the reason i bought a pedelec. so s pedelec are limited. most trails have a sign, motorcycles, mopeds and cars forbidden so if riding an s pedelec there you're facing troubles...great review..nice location...often travel to garda! take care

How about riding an ebike right? You always stand up on the pedals. Put your arse in the seat and give that back wheel some help. On the flat or climbing my arse is planted on my seat on my ebike. I have rode my levo turbo derstricted and is a blast but, downhill obviously has no difference.
I'm happy to do licensing and registration for an s pedelec but not sure I would like that helmet and gear. Pro cyclists can do 45km/h and they don't wear all that gear.
Having a faster bike is no different than having a fast car. It's up to the driver if he wants to be reckless not the vehicle. Should we ban or restrict all sportcars?
That's the point no one ever talks about. Virtually every car ever made is too fast for the highway but we don't make a stink about it. We trust that the repercussions of breaking the law will encourage people to be more respectful of it. Can we also treat ebike riders like adults?
EU directive allows 200W motor with accelerator and no speed cutout. I have a commuter and cruise on the flat at 35 km/h. 25km/h is a joke for commuting and a complete waste of time for me.
@@seakayak4425 for sure. But I use mine to commute as well. And there, I could use the speed, especially since I'm either on a dedicated bicycle path or street, but never with pedestrians. And like I said, roadies reach these speeds and no one is trying to limit them.

Also, you seem not to have watched this video well. On trail, it makes no difference, especially down the hill, you'll be as fast on normal MTB as on emtb. Speed pedelec shows why they are so versatile. Still fun as heck uphill, but lets you cruise along flats fast enough to keep up with all the Mamils. Too bad you didn't compare the Spitzing to Turbo Levo Comp or something. I guess it would piss off a lot of people...
If only u could have any type of wattage on a e bike but have it restricted to the legal speed limit allowed on a e bike. In the uk yr only allowed 250 watts but what if u need to carry around heavy cargo on a trike or a diy project then u need that extra wattage.
Not really a good point... If you have a look at the current market, you will see there is a quite fair area for those de-restricted products. Also please think about why those bikes can be de-restricted if they are rated 250W? Because they are not really 250W motors. Some of Bosch motors are even 750w but you only see 250w stickers. And if those sensible riders use them only off-road who will be bothered?
To many rules . Its my life and i can do what i like just aslong as i dont interier with anyonelse . Gov are made to run the country but not rule over the people . Thats tyranny when they do . Remember the gov works for the public not the other way around .
Whilst I agree that the 15.5mph feels awfully slow for those of us in the UK, there are a few reasons for this that I haven’t seen come up in the mass of chatter. 1) bicycles need no road tax, no third party liability accident insurance, no mot requirements, and don’t have to meet any road safety requirements. Road registered vehicles need to pass whole layers of extra testing for things like sharp edges which might hurt a pedestrian in an accident and more. Read the SVLA regulations for motorcycles which is a lengthy tome. All these requirements would also inevitably push the purchase price up to cover extra costs to the manufacturer. 2) Bicycle Riders have no requirements to have passed any capability standard whatsoever ever (motorcycle test or license). 3) Bicyle riders do not need to wear crash helmets. Motorcycle riders do and the helmets have to meet stringent safety standards way and above those for bicycle helmets. 4) Bicycle Vs pedestrian collisions. In recent years there has been an exponential increase in the number of 20mph speed limited zones popping up in heavily populated areas around the UK. The reason is simply that statistically a 20mph collision between car an pedestrian is almost always survivable. A 30mph collision is significantly less so. Bear in mind that if the vehicle (car or motorcycle) is legally road registered, it is insured, meets a minimum MOT standard at least once a year. This means is should have legally functioning brakes, tyres with a minimum tread depth, has met the legal requirements for pedestrian protection applicable at the time it was manufactured. If the legal speed limit for pedelecs was raised to 20 or 25mph without introducing all the other legal requirements which apply to mopeds or motorcycles there would likely be a significant increase in deaths. Firstly deaths of riders due to poor or no helmets. Secondly rider deaths due to the pedalec not having regular test for brake function and tyre legality. Thirdly more deaths in pedalec vs pedestrian collisions, more deaths in pedalec Vs car collisions, more occurrences of collisions or pedalec Vs car collisions and therefore more occurrences of accidents where the car driver is not at fault and has had their car damaged by an uninsured pedalec rider. Honestly restricting bicycles at such low levels of speeds that we actually use on a regular basis is just ridiculous. It would be like placing a car at 35 mph restriction no matter where you are.

I have yet to see an actual scientific study showing a recurring event on a regular basis that is actually a problem with ebike speed to the point where society needs to be forcibly changed. By arbitrarily creating rules through guessing and theories we will have unintentional and usually unanticipated consequences. We could just go so far to live in fear and no one's allowed to ride bikes anywhere as it would prevent all injuries. Restricting ebikes has not proved to do anything beneficial for society. It's all a guess.
If you need assist past 25kph then youre not climbing hard enough. Get a road bike wimp. I have a.. cough...2500w ebike and we did a days riding on byeways , I flattened a BIG battery, while my friends son stayed with us all day on standard Cube stereo. I'd gone through 20ah and he still had 60% left. Mine is totally illegal and I wouldnt use it on bike trails, his is 100% legal and twice as efficient.
Exactly my extra power and speed is wasted, I'm just throwing it away as heat..spin and hauling the increased weight. Im was amazed at how the little Cube could keep up even in Eco mode.

Come on , ask any mountain biker which one he wants ? Speed Pedelec every time . for when you need it . if you have it , you can use it . if you don't . then you cannot . simple , like me .
Laws stop people hurting themselves, but knowing you are going fast inherently has an obvious element of danger that you can't deny as the wind blows at your face. It's the people that don't hear you coming, and the stopping power, plus gross weight that is the problem, especially if the brakes need upgrading, and you are towing, or loaded up for touring. Even large capacity batteries can add the gross weight, and inertial forces when attempting to stop in an emergency. Most people in countries that have laws that are there, but not heavily governed, will fit something larger, but be a little more discreet. What if you're towing, and speed restricted, yet have plenty of hill climbing power, and take-off power. Stupid laws capping power ratings can't work, especially when people tweak their controllers. We are all over-policed. Life is boring.
For the most part in the clip, the S-pedelec shouldn't have even been ridden on the same terrain. In the UK at least, private land with no public access or right of way, public roads, RUPP's and BOAT's aside, the legal right to ride the S-pedelec ends. Why bother!?
You can ride the s-pedelec on UK Roads. You need a cat P licence, insurance and to wear a helmet but other than B.O.A.T, private land with no public access, etc, Roads are the only other legal place to ride them as you can't use shared use bike paths.
How's this for stupid guys. Here in New Zealand those bloody Lime scooters are allowed a 27 kph top speed. No helmet, no experience and on the footpath. The costs of accidents is accruing.
Oh, that´s really cool to make life more adventurous. Here in Germany we had a debate for ages and finally came up with a - surprisingly simplistic - rule. Nevertheless, most scooters you see are driven by two people - you won´t driven them alone when you are drunk, it´s too dangerous.
Is ‘average’ not the wrong word to describe nominal or continuous power. The only reason I see to buy an S Pedelec is for road, fire road commutes - but in reality you may as well buy an electric moped/motorcycle instead.
Why buy 2 bikes when 1 all-round speed pedelec can do everything? Full suspension emtbs make pretty good commuter bikes - tires make enough noise to warn pedestrians and the suspension makes for comfortable long rides. And you can also hop curbs, head up stairs, go thru fields and paths that road bikes can't.
@@JohnRushworth John, nobody checks (or cares) if you ride a s-pedelec. Going uphill, they are the same. But it's on roads/flat trails that allow you to ride at same pace you'd normally ride on an analog bike. So it's best of both worlds.

Nice video Steve & Chris. I think the speed pedelec has great potential for commuting to get people out of their cars and save the environment. I drive with bike in car to the Surrey hills, but with a speed pedelec I could do it as quick on my bike, but it needs to be legal. A video where you go throught the full process to make things road legal in the UK: paperwork, licence, insurance, modifications, costs etc would be really helpful. This might encourage a few riders to take this route, then once this path becomes well trodden it makes it much easier for others to follow. Specialist firms might pop up to provide insurance and help with paperwork, then eventually the process might become trivial.

You would think they would do anything reasonable to get people out of gas cars in the city. But no, e-scooters, e-unicycles are banned, and laughable speed limits is what we get.
Exactly what needs to happen. I derestricted my Specialized Levo and still find it hard going keeping up with roadies. The gearing stops you doing silly speeds on an ebike anyway. It’s about being sensible and riding to the conditions and surroundings and more importantly if there are pedestrians in your surrounding area. Don’t get me wrong I think there should be limits as to how fast people can go. I just think here in the UK the restriction is a little too slow? I think 20mph which equates to 32.1kph is spot on.

I live here in the US and I rarely hit the cutout speed (when on the trail) with either of my bikes, that being said, I would get tired of that "restriction" that you guys have to deal with. It may only be 5 mph, but it is a big difference...I would vote for the (cutout) limit to be at least the same as ours...
Agreed. I hit the cut out pretty much immediately during my commute to and from work. But on the trails where I ride when camping that 20mph will make you have to change your underwear.....Mind you I'm currently on a hardtail. We'll see how things change when I get my Fezzari next month.
So the fastest bike is faster until you put them in an environment where neither bikes can go fast.

I derestricted my bike a few weeks ago, and damn, I’m smiling even more and it just makes sense now. I can wheelie without the front wheel being thrown to the ground when I hit 25km/t, and the flow along flat trails is fantastic. What surprised me the most is that I use Turbo mode way less, and actually my riding style calmed down. I’m almost never pushing 30 km/t and above which speaks against the strain on the motor and battery argument against derestricting. If anything it might prolong my battery capacity if I keep using eco/trail mode more than turbo as I did before. Time will tell, would be cool if someone did a more scientific test. Thats Just my personal experience.
I went there on holiday and it’s awesome for e-mtb and watersports. I do think that the limit in UK should be raised to 30kph too. (Nice bikes).

Yep i love my bbshd with 3200w controller . I build my own bikes its way cheaper and you can upgrade what you want. Mines got 2 piece 203mm rotors and 4 piston brakes .
like a lot of comments here I see and feel a big difference after derestricting my E bike. Swapping out my knobblies for road tyres and added mudguards I now have joy to ride bike on road and trail. On eco I find my cadence cannot keep up with the standard ring so now moving upto a larger ring for more balanced speed to air resistance point. Also as you mentioned owners see the law is pointless so are going around the restrictions. One important thing is education, every rider should be mindful of others.
I love Spitzing bikes, they look awesome! I'm glad to finally hear Steve saying how ridiculous 25kph limit is, because up to now he was defending it :) Of course 25kph limit is irrelevant on technical trail, but sometimes we also ride our ebikes on the roads, either for commute or fun, and on the flats where this limit becomes absurd. It absolutely makes no sense when you can ride normal bike 30kph at will, not to mention road bikes that go 35-40kph easily on the flat and you don't need registration, insurance or full head helmet for it.

exactly for this reason, everybody should have the e-bike of max speed the rider himself can develop :) for example, I did 52kph max sprint on flat surface on my mtb ..so technically, i surpassed that stupid limit over 2 times just with my own legs. Now after years of dreaming, I have an ebike (i built it myself as custom , because public shop ebikes are low power expensive machines - 250w? come on.... ) ... i did rear hub 1500W conversion .. i cannot be happier! it has restricted mode, but also unrestricted and ..damn ...that thing can push 55-60kph on flat like nothing :D ..of course it is not legal here, but sometimes i use that mode...and.... i have smile from ear to ear ... :D ..
I've got a bafang 750w and set the cutout at 30mph (only available in assist level 9) which is a good top end for me, but im extremely comfortable and confident on a bike, my average speed is 11mph-16mph depending on what type of riding im doing. 20mph cutout is a good base limit i think, 15.5mph is too slow, especially for the prices some of these bikes cost. I used to be able to get 45mph with a bigger chainring, but I found that too much. OK if you have a super long commute on good condition A roads maybe, but not for normal pothole city streets.
Almost everyone thinks the legal limit is stupid, and it is, which is evidenced by the pathetic uptake rates of ebikes compared to other countries, which is an absolute shame considering how much fun they are and how much they can replace a car. Maybe the politicians can sort out the law regarding ebikes once they stop having their brexit tantrums. Then again i think a lot of the cycling advocates we have are attacking the issues wrong, you can build all the cycle lanes you want, but almost all the ones in my city are useless, they go no where, are too narrow, in extremely poor condition, have overgrowth or have cars parked or driven in them.
I have a bbshd 1000w but a 3200w controller that can do over 60kph . You just have to ride within your means . I have 203mm rotors and shimano 4 piston brakes aswel . You should be able to do what you want but if you crash or injure sombody you should be liable . You will always have idiots out there that injure people from being stupid . No use putting limits on everything . People love being told what to do by their gov employees with no clue .
If you want to ride a motorbike, just pass a test mate.
If you have a driver's licence, a cheap CBT nets you a cat P (you don't have to continue doing CBTs, just doing one validates it) and you can ride the Spritzing M1 with no issues here in the UK. That tool rocking up like a power ranger on a s-pedelec is just being a knobber for dramatisation.
You just need a road approved helmet many of which ain't too far off looking like a mtb helmet or even an open face scooter helmet would do. You'd struggle to notice the difference.

you never want to be at your top speed, there's a huge safety benefit to having the speed headroom to be able to pull away from something dangerous
I have the spitzing original version R, with no restriction at all, it’s a true beast, either on or off road, climbing up frequently at +35kph and +45kph on singles, making of anything a fun thing to run, and any other bike (even if somehow better) a joke.
Having the ability to ride anything you want, for at least 50km of range without taking care either of the battery or your legs, it is something you need to try to be able understand.
The fun thing is that even the full power mode is just a challenge to master, crazy power for riding at full speed, it kills you more than anything, and at the same time you can still get the ebike regular feeling with mode power 1 cutting at 32kph.
I think that this restriction is obviously something needed because of the potential of bad use some people could do of such power (even if I have never been worried in any situation neither by the way I use it or by the police). It is obviously a clear problem when it gets crowded or have a bad attitude, but out of these situations I think restricted or not isn’t a big deal for security.
Even though, i would truly see the problem if bunch of people where riding together these things at full power out of a defined race track, that would get very scary for anyone in and nearby... even though there are already bunches of people riding a lot of legal things together in this king of scary way... so why ebikes should be more ?
On road the main issue, is that cars don’t care about bikes, they think that they don’t go fast, so you are as good as invisible, they see you coming and they cross your road all the time, so having a back plate and insurance won’t keep you from dying ! Being out of law in these situation might even be for the better, since you can’t get involved in any kind of accident, you might even have a more appropriate way to ride safely.
To give this a conclusion, the main problem still is the place that bikes are given, is just not enough. Even if the law, here in France allow you to ride in reverse where speed in limit is 30kph, you still get horn from the cars coming at full speed in front of you, and I don’t need to add anything more to that ! 😂
You are spot on! I ordered the same bike a month ago. I feel I have the experience to be able to handle this bike and only use the higher speeds in rare straight away clear smooth situations. But not everyone may have that experience. Happy Riding!
Hey guy's. I think you need to mention the 25km limiter is actually a hazard at times when your descending and need a quick peddle stroke to lift the front. (drops, quick peddle before a jump etc) If this happens as the power drops off then it can catch you out. The limiter is dangerous. I've removed mine from my Kenevo by following the youtube crack. I don't think I'd buy an e-bike that I couldn't remove the limiter.

I have the new 2020 cyc x1pro 3000w middrive with 180nm of torque, it pumps out 2200w continuous , it would fly by the speed spitzing like it flys by the non speed version on the flat.
There are speed pedalec and there are fast ebikes.
One intresting fact to have in mind is that in Sweden you are not alowed to ride s-pedalec out in the forest. Just on ordinary roads. It’s not like the cops lurking in the forest. BUT it could be problems if anything happends.

Hi I'm in UK. Thinking of making an E purchase at back end of this year beginning of next. I had my eye on 2 bikes not yet released. Being interested in the Tq motor. The stork e:drenik gtq was the first. Then I came across this. Very pricy bike. So like the 1050wh battery. Although as stated that probably equates too about 800 with the power. Still. A bug improvement over current gen. Seems a difficult choice. And hard to source being in the UK. Anyone else have thoughts on these bikes?
Yes, as others said up the speed to 35 km. On another note, not sure why bosch on the new CX increased the power in every mode as the previous model was fine. In my mind would be better to extend range, but maybe that's just me.

The shop I got my 25kph bike from were I’m pretty sure selling speed pedelecs without registering them or anything. I’m guessing that’s happening all over the place. It’s basically impossible to police it so long as you don’t go blasting through urban areas in turbo mode.
And yeah the more I think about it, the more I would like to see the same 20mph limit everywhere that the US has. I get passed by roadies who are going way faster than me all the time.
It depends on the country what type of registration it needs (if any). Some places it is just regular insurance, the owner can do it himself.

Until you have a crash and are not legal or insured because you are riding illegally then its not so easy to slip under the radar. 32 is fine for emtb , we have it here and it does not detract from the ride at all. On road 40 is better and thankfully my country has no imposed ebike speed limits other than the regular bike speed limits

45K at min to feel safe riding in traffic. I have people cutting me off all the time when I ride my 32kph Ebike. Almost never happens riding my Stromer at 48kph.
24-26mph seems to be the point cars stop doing dangerous overtakes. Although saying that I did have a guy blast pass me while I was a naughty boy doing 32 in a 30 only for him to have to slam on his brakes and I overtake him 3-4 seconds later! I wonder if it will it ever be safe in traffic?

Some loser male in his 60's. I did not want to get charged with Elderly bashing so I moved on. I was riding at 18 mph. I do not think he would have tried it at 28 mph though.

A guy I saw stopped on a blind bend during a busy school drop off period and had me loudly explain in depth why it was dangerous and stupid. I did catch him a few days later parked outside my house and walking his kids the hundred meters or so to the gate.
Its like no-one in the comments has experienced riding a moped. Get on a 50cc moped and see how traffic treats you. It's exactly the same as a cyclist in many respects. If you need 45kph to feel safe in traffic, you're going to be sorely disappointed.

In New Zealand we have a 32 km limit, 30 on the road on the way to the trails is more than fast enough if you are only wearing a t shirt and shorts. 25 would be bloody annoying.

I have a normal Pedelec and I really love it. You can ride a bike without being exhausted afterwards.

I'm totally not into speed but torque... I do get myself in a lot of steep or otherwise difficult terrain where 16km/h is *fast*
Basically no emtb out there has a granny chainring! With the 40+T casette and a 22ish chainring that could go in knee-deep snow or 45° slippery, boudery slopes, slow, steady and safe.
And I'm not even considering those motors that sport a tiny chainring with a 3x multiplier at the crank arm.
My wife got an EMTB so we can ride together but I’m still waiting for her on every flat section. We have to ride on roads to get to the trails and a restriction on 25kph is simply too slow.

You guys are softening up after being very anti speed or chipped bikes for a while. I noticed that after Steve went to the US and rode a rental bike with 20 mph motor. I think that the S version of an E bike has a number of changes to allow type approval (e.g. brake levers with a different profile), and generally are built to handle the higher speed. Off road neither one is going top speed all the time, so yes it's not an advantage, but as you admit on the level or commuting it's awesome to have the S version. But a great video and good to see a more balanced view on the channel 👍

No. 25 kph for assistance is okay. I dont want there to be even 1% chance of assholes demanding cyclists carry license plates.... with a road bike or a triathlon bike you can go at up to 70 kmph without any license or license plates or anything. If cyclists have motor support at 30 or 35 or 45 kph it could harm non-motorized cyclists. HOWEVER.... the 250 watts limits is CRIMINAL! If the motor shuts at 25 kph WHY have a limit on wattage? Or a compromise solution: accelerometer integrated into motor by law so it can be stuck at 250 on flat or desdending terrain but slowly rise the wattage as uphill climb becomes more steep. 250 for going uphil is .... nothing. completely nothing. The fact asshole politicians decided ebikes shouldn't produce enough power to be able to go at 25 kph even on steep climbs is... just being assholes.
Having a Haibike Nduro 8 with Performance CX motor which I have de restricted, it’s not just about the extra speed. I would gladly leave restricted if it were law at 35kmph (22mph) as that is a much useable speed. 25 kph cut off is just a bit too low. I use mine off road in both limited and de restricted mode as the Bosch box allows the switching between it.

I used this kit, it’s a plug and play, left hand crank off (tool supplied) cover off, and two plugs. The hardest thing is stowing the box in the frame

We will need speed pedalic IMO to develop more robust tyres, gears, motors and protective wear. On road or fire tracks speed pedalic serve a purpose as in faster times but on those fire tracks I'm out in the countryside enjoying it. Up hill though off road I have never thought I need more than 15mph.
Reise and Müller do this with their wheels, brakes etc being certified for speed pedelecs. But yeh I can't imagine if cheap ebikes are fitted with speed pedelec engines without making the recommended changes
As a novice and older rider I would like to see more on scenic rides in various countries. I plan to visit Europe and would like to know where would be good to go for easy rides but with plenty of scenery. I would be hiring an EBike.
The limit is a real pain in the ass. It seems to kick in quite low. I'm not looking at going fast on roads but fuck me it's quite limiting and I think quite dangerous you can't go a similar speed to traffic.

It is only UK that tells the S-Pedelec riders to wear the motorbike helmet. You can wear just a bicycle helmet on an S-Pedelec elsewhere in the EU and not wear any helmet on a pedelec.
Secondly, do not the e-MTB brakes cut off the motor power? How strange. Is the motor unprotected? So if you Steve continue pedalling on a fire-road after applying brakes, does the motor still push against the brakes? Very strange.
and the S-spedelec cost like 9000€. Takes 3+ months to get it registered. Buying all the extra gear you need, the insurances etc. Its just not worth buying a Spedelec. too many laws/rules around it. Atleast if you buy a commuter.
S-pelec is really just an advertisement for what a derestricted bike can do.

And if i use it on the bicyclelanes and accident happens. its just not worth the extra 20km. takes me 18min to work with my Specialized Vado 5.0 -2020 model. that cost me 4600€. Buying the Spedelec would cost me 6600. + all the crap that comes with it. Just not worth it. f you live in a small town where noone care. sure i would tune it to do 100kmh. I trust my own ability at the bike, but i dont trust people around me. Drunk or sleep deprived drivers etc.

I don't think the unrestricting is about the speed but more about the long climbs, I think yous need to talk about that in more detail and if it helps much.
Genuine question, I don't know just my brain cannot find the logic:
By pedaling there's no legal issue to take the bike to 30mph (or more) on the road but having assisted electric help up to that speed makes it ILLEGAL.
So the speed is not the issue, the safety is not the issue makes me think that these Governments are only worried about making money out of it.
However, being under 30mph in traffic IMO is more dangerous instead of keeping up with the city limit 30mph.
Not interested in increasing my bike's speed as I'm not bothered about going as fast as possible but it would be interesting if someone could create a way to reprogramme the motor firmware to increase the torque or at least change the torque output curve to help the climbing ability.
this is what i would want. I wanna be able to pedal feeling like i'm in the easiest gear on flat pavement while going up a 45 degree incline on rooty dirt trails. lol.

On bafang motors they have made luna cycles software to get into the program to change settings . You can buy usb cables to get into it . People have made programs to just plug in and load into the controllers . I have a controller pumping out 3200w if i want .
Steve just keeps beating this dead horse topic with a closed mind. No, unrestricted bikes ARE faster, just NOT EVERYWHERE. If you are going to subject them to tests which give them no opportunity to excel, like trials..they won't.
Having some experience owning both a restricted (US..32km/h) & unrestricted (55lb. 1600w mid drive w/throttle) I have an opinion based on actually riding both. If you ride on fairly open trails (enough to go over 35km/h) the unrestricted bike is much faster & much more fun. If the hill you are riding can be climbed over the 20mph, you will.
If you think a restricted bike is as fast downhill, it's not on all downhills. When you get to an open area where you may be going over the limit of the restricted bike, you can increase speed on the unrestricted bike.
Some of us ride bikes where the faster we go, the more fun we have. Obviously, not everyone's cup of tea, but your constant disparagement of unrestricted bikes has grown tedious.
rather get a motorcycle thsn an s pedelec! the biggest difference is that s pedelecs go under mopeds/motorcycles and therefore can't use explicit bicycle roads. that's the reason i bought a pedelec. so s pedelec are limited. most trails have a sign, motorcycles, mopeds and cars forbidden so if riding an s pedelec there you're facing troubles...great review..nice location...often travel to garda! take care

So I’m slogging my 26kg Ebike along at 16mph without assistance and road bikers are flying past me at 30mph ......so why am I restricted?? It’s just a plain stupid rule.

kitted out my bike is 9kg (not the lightest), that makes a significant difference w/ speed. Pedal faster/get stronger, or get a road bike =)

How about riding an ebike right? You always stand up on the pedals. Put your arse in the seat and give that back wheel some help. On the flat or climbing my arse is planted on my seat on my ebike. I have rode my levo turbo derstricted and is a blast but, downhill obviously has no difference.
I'm happy to do licensing and registration for an s pedelec but not sure I would like that helmet and gear. Pro cyclists can do 45km/h and they don't wear all that gear.
It only requires a helmet. You don't need the gear.
Having a faster bike is no different than having a fast car. It's up to the driver if he wants to be reckless not the vehicle. Should we ban or restrict all sportcars?
That's the point no one ever talks about. Virtually every car ever made is too fast for the highway but we don't make a stink about it. We trust that the repercussions of breaking the law will encourage people to be more respectful of it. Can we also treat ebike riders like adults?

EU directive allows 200W motor with accelerator and no speed cutout. I have a commuter and cruise on the flat at 35 km/h. 25km/h is a joke for commuting and a complete waste of time for me.
The speed pedelecs are limited in eu in support watt power, the normal and r pedelecs not so strict, they are stronger !

I do agree. Roadies blast past me every day, a lot's of them at the s-pedelec speeds. Why do I have to be limited? The law needs yo be updated.

@@seakayak4425 for sure. But I use mine to commute as well. And there, I could use the speed, especially since I'm either on a dedicated bicycle path or street, but never with pedestrians. And like I said, roadies reach these speeds and no one is trying to limit them.

Also, you seem not to have watched this video well. On trail, it makes no difference, especially down the hill, you'll be as fast on normal MTB as on emtb. So danger is the same, but only emtb is restricted? Makes no sense at all.

Speed pedelec shows why they are so versatile. Still fun as heck uphill, but lets you cruise along flats fast enough to keep up with all the Mamils. Too bad you didn't compare the Spitzing to Turbo Levo Comp or something. I guess it would piss off a lot of people...
If only u could have any type of wattage on a e bike but have it restricted to the legal speed limit allowed on a e bike. In the uk yr only allowed 250 watts but what if u need to carry around heavy cargo on a trike or a diy project then u need that extra wattage.

If you have a look at the current market, you will see there is a quite fair area for those de-restricted products.
Also please think about why those bikes can be de-restricted if they are rated 250W? Because they are not really 250W motors.
Some of Bosch motors are even 750w but you only see 250w stickers.

To many rules . Its my life and i can do what i like just aslong as i dont interier with anyonelse . Gov are made to run the country but not rule over the people . Thats tyranny when they do . Remember the gov works for the public not the other way around .
Whilst I agree that the 15.5mph feels awfully slow for those of us in the UK, there are a few reasons for this that I haven’t seen come up in the mass of chatter. 1) bicycles need no road tax, no third party liability accident insurance, no mot requirements, and don’t have to meet any road safety requirements. Road registered vehicles need to pass whole layers of extra testing for things like sharp edges which might hurt a pedestrian in an accident and more. Read the SVLA regulations for motorcycles which is a lengthy tome. All these requirements would also inevitably push the purchase price up to cover extra costs to the manufacturer. 2) Bicycle Riders have no requirements to have passed any capability standard whatsoever ever (motorcycle test or license). 3) Bicyle riders do not need to wear crash helmets. Motorcycle riders do and the helmets have to meet stringent safety standards way and above those for bicycle helmets. 4) Bicycle Vs pedestrian collisions. In recent years there has been an exponential increase in the number of 20mph speed limited zones popping up in heavily populated areas around the UK. The reason is simply that statistically a 20mph collision between car an pedestrian is almost always survivable. A 30mph collision is significantly less so. Bear in mind that if the vehicle (car or motorcycle) is legally road registered, it is insured, meets a minimum MOT standard at least once a year. This means is should have legally functioning brakes, tyres with a minimum tread depth, has met the legal requirements for pedestrian protection applicable at the time it was manufactured.
If the legal speed limit for pedelecs was raised to 20 or 25mph without introducing all the other legal requirements which apply to mopeds or motorcycles there would likely be a significant increase in deaths. Firstly deaths of riders due to poor or no helmets. Secondly rider deaths due to the pedalec not having regular test for brake function and tyre legality. Thirdly more deaths in pedalec vs pedestrian collisions, more deaths in pedalec Vs car collisions, more occurrences of collisions or pedalec Vs car collisions and therefore more occurrences of accidents where the car driver is not at fault and has had their car damaged by an uninsured pedalec rider.
These are the reasons the ‘killjoys’ imposed the 15.5mph limits on us.
have a m.c. license, registering not a deal breaker. in Canada the deal breaker, is becoming motorcycle. no more bike lanes, literally stuck in traffic no filtering or lane splitting...
Honestly restricting bicycles at such low levels of speeds that we actually use on a regular basis is just ridiculous. It would be like placing a car at 35 mph restriction no matter where you are.
Or a speed limit of 20/30mph when sharing the area with other slower more vulnerable people.

@@kraisydave That is why we have laws,people don't always want to do the right thing,the problem is proved;excess speed increases the chance of accident and injury,if that's to the rider then it's an acceptable risk in my book but other people,walkers,kids etc who share the trails it is not.
@@seakayak4425 No that's not correct... We have laws in classes such as this due to proven data from statistical studies. I have yet to see an actual scientific study showing a recurring event on a regular basis that is actually a problem with ebike speed to the point where society needs to be forcibly changed. By arbitrarily creating rules through guessing and theories we will have unintentional and usually unanticipated consequences. We could just go so far to live in fear and no one's allowed to ride bikes anywhere as it would prevent all injuries. Restricting ebikes has not proved to do anything beneficial for society. It's all a guess.

I have a.. cough...2500w ebike and we did a days riding on byeways , I flattened a BIG battery, while my friends son stayed with us all day on standard Cube stereo.
I'd gone through 20ah and he still had 60% left.
Mine is totally illegal and I wouldnt use it on bike trails, his is 100% legal and twice as efficient.
That's just down to motor size. If you put yours into 250w mode you'd of probably used hardly any of that battery

Come on , ask any mountain biker which one he wants ? Speed Pedelec every time . for when you need it . if you have it , you can use it . if you don't . then you cannot . simple , like me .
Laws stop people hurting themselves, but knowing you are going fast inherently has an obvious element of danger that you can't deny as the wind blows at your face. It's the people that don't hear you coming, and the stopping power, plus gross weight that is the problem, especially if the brakes need upgrading, and you are towing, or loaded up for touring. Even large capacity batteries can add the gross weight, and inertial forces when attempting to stop in an emergency. Most people in countries that have laws that are there, but not heavily governed, will fit something larger, but be a little more discreet. What if you're towing, and speed restricted, yet have plenty of hill climbing power, and take-off power. Stupid laws capping power ratings can't work, especially when people tweak their controllers. We are all over-policed. Life is boring.
For the most part in the clip, the S-pedelec shouldn't have even been ridden on the same terrain. In the UK at least, private land with no public access or right of way, public roads, RUPP's and BOAT's aside, the legal right to ride the S-pedelec ends. Why bother!?
You can ride the s-pedelec on UK Roads. You need a cat P licence, insurance and to wear a helmet but other than B.O.A.T, private land with no public access, etc, Roads are the only other legal place to ride them as you can't use shared use bike paths.

How's this for stupid guys. Here in New Zealand those bloody Lime scooters are allowed a 27 kph top speed. No helmet, no experience and on the footpath. The costs of accidents is accruing.
Oh, that´s really cool to make life more adventurous. Here in Germany we had a debate for ages and finally came up with a - surprisingly simplistic - rule. Nevertheless, most scooters you see are driven by two people - you won´t driven them alone when you are drunk, it´s too dangerous.
Licence insurance helmet , it will need lights indicators, horn number plate manufacturers Type approval VIN number it's a non starter Jonesy .
It got reduced to 15 in the city recently and yep why not bikes allowed on footpaths as bicycles are banned.

The only reason I see to buy an S Pedelec is for road, fire road commutes - but in reality you may as well buy an electric moped/motorcycle instead.
Why buy 2 bikes when 1 all-round speed pedelec can do everything? Full suspension emtbs make pretty good commuter bikes - tires make enough noise to warn pedestrians and the suspension makes for comfortable long rides. And you can also hop curbs, head up stairs, go thru fields and paths that road bikes can't.

@@JohnRushworth John, nobody checks (or cares) if you ride a s-pedelec. Going uphill, they are the same. But it's on roads/flat trails that allow you to ride at same pace you'd normally ride on an analog bike. So it's best of both worlds.
