A lot of ppl overload their bipod , creating tension in the body which results in inconsistencies. I use light load on the bipod if I can, but mostly on gas guns.

As noted by others, loading a bipod becomes more important as recoil increases. The Corps was adamant that we load the bipods on support weapons, like the SAW and M240. We weren't subtle about it either; jam that bipod down, get your weight into the stock, then dig your toes into the ground and push your weight forward. A 5.56 rifle at 100 yards isn't going to show much difference because there is too little recoil, and the barrel is free floated. As cyclic rate and recoil increase, loading the bipod becomes a useful tool for recoil control.
I think how the barrel is floated matters as well. When we were teenagers, my brother and I liked to take our hunting rifles out to a power line road and shoot hanging tie plates we collected from nearby railroad tracks. We put Harris bipods on our rifles to help with stability, but found a neutral load resulted in several minutes of vertical stringing. Loading the bipod eliminated the stringing, but resulted in a noticeable point of impact shift versus shooting without a bipod. We were advised to free float our barrels, which we did. This eliminated the point of impact shift with a loaded bipod, but not the stringing from a neutral bipod. Eventually, I decided a bipod was too much hassle for the benefit it offered; the weight and balance, its tendency to catch and snag on brush, and having it thump my support hand with sharp edges during recoil shooting offhand was a pain. I put a 1907 sling on it and learned to shoot with a tight brace sling, and was much better off for it. My second tour I ran a SAW, and that has been the only time I've used a bipod since discovering the correct use for a sling. Now I just shoot prone over my ruck and/or use my sling.

I appreciate the video and your take on things. I view things differently from my experience.
It looked like to me you loaded in all your shots with varying degrees of tension. It’s really hard to not load an Atlas unless you’re shooting free-recoil. The Atlas just has more lash in the design. If you do shoot free-recoil with the Atlas, you tend to get some left/right flyers.
I’d disagree that the origin of loading a bipod on precision rifles is because of machine guns, it’s because it works and it’s part of precision rifle fundamentals for prone position.
I’ve found that with the Atlas, a mild load is all that is needed. With a Harris more load tends to help both with “hop” and reduces high flyers.
The only time I’ve found loading to not be my preference is with an “ski” type bipod.
Anyway, that’s my experience. I’ve been shooting precision rifles for about twenty years, won several local/regional matches in PRS-style, placed top 20 in national-level matches, and won some local F-class matches off a bipod.

So how do you load up when you're not in prone?

    • @thepracticalrifleman
      @thepracticalrifleman 6 місяців тому

@@SnapD24 the same way you would in prone, you put mild pressure with your shoulder; enough to remove the lash.
But most of the time, if you’re not in the prone, you should be using a bag or a tripod. Or even both.

I can speak on this subject first hand and what happens. After watching this video I went out and tested it. I found that with an atlas bipod, just enough load to take out the slop worked best. If you loaded too hard, the pressure was inconsistent and shot placement was random. Just the right amount of load was most consistent and consistency is what this is all about. A gas gun has more recoil than a bolt gun and you want to keep that gun moving straight backward and forward as best as possible. I also learned that the fundamentals were extremely important! When you get behind the gun make sure you are square to the target. You can confirm this when your recoil is straight back and forward when the gun settles and you are right on target. If you find your muzzle pulling left or right, make adjustments in your body position till you land back on target. Get yourself a good rear bag and learn how to properly use your support hand to aid you in recoil. And lastly, find a surface where your bipod doesn't slide around during recoil. This was also a big issue I overlooked. All that helped me to shoot bolt gun type groups with my gas gun. It goes without saying that accurate barrel and ammo play an important role as well.

You should also mention that with this technique, people should maintain very light cheek pressure on the stock. NOT what you typically hear from old instructors about resting the whole weight of your head on the stock. Resting the whole weight of your head on the stock will throw shots height. Also very light to almost no pressure on the pistol grip from the firing hand (thumb on the side of the stock not wrapped around the pistol grip). Awesome video 👍

Very interesting how your third shots, in each load group, was very consistent, as in almost no adjustment in sight picture. I'd be interested to see if you could calibrate to the load you naturally settle into after a couple of shots.

  • @Rico11b

Bipod loading is directly correlated to the amount of recoil the rifle is producing. Low recoil is low loading, while high recoil will need high loading, unless you can allow the rifle to track straight rearward to be able to see your own impacts. Using a non-recoiling tiny .223 is NOT a viable test. The weight of the rifle also has a lot to do with recoiling. A heavy recoiling rifle WILL require some loading of the bipod. If not you'll never see you own impact which is the whole point of controlling recoil.
With your rubber feet in the dirt your bipod load fails after the first shot. The feet of your bipod is sliding back and forth on each shot. Play is back and look at the feet sliding on the dirt. Even on your low recoiling setup it's sliding. That's a TERRIBLE sign. Your bipod feet should NOT be moving at all regardless of which loading method you use. The only way to completely eliminate bipod loading it to NOT use a bipod, but rather a smooth sand bag that allows the rifle to slide back and forth under recoil. There's just no way to NOT load a bipod unless you practice "free recoil" without your shoulder or cheek touching the rifle.

Just finished a Grendel build and last weekend when I took it to the range I found that the mags do not feed. I've got two from ASC- they may feed the top round and they may not. 1 mag is polymer Amend2 and the bcg skates across the top and jams the round into the barrel extension. I also have 1 mag from CMMG I haven't tried yet but I'm expecting similar results. I've swapped lowers and gotten the same malfunction. I've heard Elander is the way to go but they're either out of stock or a capacity I can't get.
To complicate things I tried standard 5.56 Pmags and they run fine aside from capacity issues that are known. Any ideas?
Edit: just tried the CMMG; feeds reliably by hand- going to have to try it at the range.

Weird place to ask. I use ASC and duramag of various capacity that work fine. I only shoot brass cased ammo. If the CMMG mags work in your gun, buy more.

I thought it might be a long shot but every now and again I get a response from WS. I figured at the very least I might get someone with some experience with this or a similar issue. I'd love to get more CMMG mags but they only come in 10rd.

I've seen a lot of issues from Grendel. And when I say that I mean every semi auto Grendel I've ever come across has this issue. Very rarely is it the actual mags fault. Sometimes it is. Majority of the time the gas system isn't balanced well.

loading the bipod becomes useful as recoil increases. Your Gay Tiger doesn’t recoil much, so loading the bipod might not help. Once the recoil is enough to move your body in the prone, bipod loading become helpful. Totally agree what you say about fundamentals
