I don’t ship Sonadow at all. However, being homophobic over a ship is just dumb. Although, I do agree with you when you say Sonic and Shadow do have a certain dynamic. I like the idea of the partnership. I never saw their dynamic as flirting but that could be me. I’m happy that gay fans have their own ship to cling onto. The thing I like about Sonic is he can appeal to any one no matter who you are.

I’m glad some of us can agree Homophobia sucks, feels likes it’s especially prevalent in the Sonic fandom spaces like they never grew out of the “gay ships are gross and cringe”, then again Sonic fandom has a special brand of ship discourse even with the non gay ones, but really besides a few most of the ships are cool as long as we’re keeping it wholesome. I think it’s just a rival thing, Rivals always have an interesting connection with each other and they tend to know each other better then most other characters, and it’s always more interesting to look deeper then “oh they just hate each other”, and I mean if they aren’t being shipped together can you really call it a true rivalry?
I hate when people judge ships on canonicity. Shipping is about taking two characters who's personalities mesh well, and putting them in a hypotetical romantic scenario. Most of the time, when someone claims to ship something, they're not saying "they are a couple", but rather, "I think it would be cute if they were a couple". Many fans don't understand that and think you're delusional for shipping something that's clearly not canon.

The whole "Sonic isn't interested in a romantic relationship" thing is very curious to me in particular, since I myself am a person who does not seek out romance, and still ended up in a relationship. about the "shadow, you're okay!" panel, it's way more meaningful in context. in one of the megaman crossovers, sonic and megaman's worlds being merging together, and shadow, rouge, and omega stay behind in a gun building to try saving people, but the buildings that were merging end up exploding and killing them, and one of shadows ring falls to the ground and is caught by sonic, who is seemingly the only one upset by what happened. the events of the crossover end up turning back time and erasing everyone's memories, but sonic has a strange feeling and immediately asks nicole to call shadow for him, resulting in the panel. tl;dr: shadow was killed; time reset; sonic still felt the effects of shadows death and was relieved to see he was ok. in conclusion, 🏳️🌈
I wouldn’t see this as something to suggest a ship, more like a friendship. However, since Shadow and Sonic usually don’t see each other exactly being buddy-buddy with each other, can’t blame you why

Sonic likes to challenge Shadow and working together with Shadow whenever the goals of Team Dark and Freedom Fighters are aligned. It's also implied that Shadow's "death" in that continuity's version of SA2 distraught Sonic too. Besides respecting Sonic a lot, Shadow was also implied to be fond of Sonic's banter and antics whenever they are around each other. Though that was something that Shadow doesn't admit to anyone else.

I LOVE your analysis on their relationship being much more nuanced than “polar opposites”…they’ve always had this really mysterious, push and pull to them like you said. On the surface they seem like they’d be “opposites attract”, but during the series, anytime they battle, it’s more like friendly competition between equals. They respect each other, and are fascinated by each other. Sonic is one of the only things that throws shadow off in sa2, while the rest of the time he’s able to keep up his “I know what I’m doing and I’m in control” persona. @@scootie_scootI know, I only show a screenshot of it a couple times throughout the video. 😔 By the time the Limited Runs version was announced, I was already very deep in the video editing stage. The voiceovers for the iceberg had been recorded, edited, and mixed with the background music and it was just too late to go back and edit. I believe voiceovers were all recorded by August 15th, with the exception of the artist shoutout. I think if I had just kept re-editing, the video would be uploaded at a much later time with how quickly SEGA has been dropping trailers, updates, and Sonadow social media hijinks haha!
I’ve been a fan from the artist who created the iconic sonadow GIF. I remembered when The artist posted this, everyone then and till now use this gif bc still impact the each frame of the drawing. Sonic kiss shadow, shadow receiving it and the both of them just enjoying it. The artist was so recognizable through the 2012 to 2017 based on their Sonamy art but when they posted something related to Sonic and shadow, it was always on the top. Used to have more social media like twitter, tumblr but just leave the acc or discounted after the sudden change of the fandom.

Basically, there's a question about Shadow falling in SA2 and he talks about how Sonic tried to catch him and he pulled himself away because he was worried that he'd drag Sonic down with him Sonic sounds so touched about it and just in general it's a really good interaction😭 Other than that I think you got everything hahahaha, this video was great! 38:45 I want to expand on this cause I was SO obsessed with this storyline when it came out as I am both a Sonic and Mega Man nerd This happens right after the second Sonic and Mega Man crossover (worlds unite) like an issue or two later I think. So, close to the end of Worlds Unite Sonic and Mega Man go to help their friends in battle but when they get there a huge explosion happens and Sonic finds Shadows inhibitor ring, implying he died in battle, as we never see him again after this point. BUT at the climax of the story Sonic and Mega Man turn super to stop the doctors and create the super genesis wave to undo the events of the crossover and save everyone, however Eggman tried to attack Sonic during the proccess which ends up reseting EVERYTHING (the actual reason for this is that they had the Ken Penders lawsuit recently and had to basically start from scratch). At first no one remembers what happened during the crossover or the story that was happening right before it unless they interact with Nicole, so when Sonic is reminded of everything that happened one of the first things he does (if not the first but dont quote me on that cause I dont remember) is try to call Shadow to see if he succeeded in fixing everything, and he did!! Shadow is ok and doesn't remember what happened or why Sonic is calling him, right after that panel Sonic says nothing to explain the situation and is just relieved to see that he's alright and the call ends. I believe they never bring up this event again or let Shadow in on the events of W.U. after this moment but I may be wrong Thanks for letting have a chance to ramble on about ONE Archie Sonic moment omg I just love that panel and the edited version is so funny to me Shadow looks so unbothered like "duh, are you blind"
Time Traveler here, let's see: -There's a cutscene tying Shadow Generations into the Shadow Boss Battle in Sonic Generations, where the pair quote their previous encounters in Adventure 2 and Heroes, as if this time-hopping adventure has made them nostalgic. -Shadow refuses to use his new Doom Powers on Sonic, he claims "I'll beat him on equal terms or not at all" but I say he just didn't want to risk actually hurting him. It should be noted he gets increasingly aggressive over the course of the game as Black Doom tempts him with ever greater power, (perhaps best demonstrated in the Mephiles fight) so showing restraint against Sonic seems pretty meaningful. -If you talk to Maria right after said cutscene, she says "He seems nice!" about Sonic, which is like, the go-to phrase when you think two people are a couple but don't know for sure yet.
Fun small thing about the "Shadonic" portion! -- I remember this shift to the use of the name becoming popular, at least on tumblr, around 2017-2018! I don't remember all of the intimate details but I believe it was like a sonadow fandom rebranding to try and distance themselves from the titular "Sonadow" which had all those years of mixed results and harrassment associated with it to something more modern and fresh, thus "Shadonic". I admittedly fell out of the fandom for a bit (new hyperfixation goes WEEE) so I didn't see a lot of the play-by-play for how that developed and I know I'd seen it briefly used in years prior, often by fans across the pond in Korea and Japan more, but nowadays it seems like "Sonadow" has regained positive traction enough that it's become the main tag used again, however most if not al tumblr posts still use Shadonic as a secondary tag! Okay back to the video for me now YAY ! Tysm for making this it's so fun to revisit all these bits from over the years!!

You know, as someone who isn't too into shipping and didn't understood Sonadow (at least before the vid) I can see now why people might see the pair and think of it as them being in some sort of relationship. It's also kind of awesome how such a niche thing drives many others to create and develop new things (Art, Stories, etc.) . Yes, things can be a bit over the top. But if it's your way of having fun, there's nothing wrong with that. It's also great how perception has changed over the years, I'm glad there is more acceptance and more people don't mind or even support the ship. It's a great video. Thanks for sharing a bit of history from this part of the community, it's always good to see different views of your favorite franchise.

Honestly thank you for this huuuuge deep dive of the history and Lore of the ship I seriously appreciate it. And yknow, the ship wasn't always called Sonadow as much during the early 2000's vs. Now, in fact it was referred to (at first) as Shadonic but that ship name definitely phased out a lot over time because everyone thought Sonadow rolled off the tongue better, understandably. But yeah all my Sonic fan friends in middle school were calling it Shadonic and we enjoyed it so much. We even had a little fan club in school and one of my teachers supported it. I made Flipnote Hatena Animations for it before Flipnote Hatena was discontinued by Nintendo. Those were really good days... I miss those days a lot..
The funny thing about "don't be a stranger" is that it's not early days as you believed, it's the last page that the incredibly infamous Ken Penders ever wrote. Also in the musical gift, when you give Sonic themes of other characters, he refers to them in broad, unspecific terms, like "this song reminds me of a certain (insert species here) I'm sure they'll love it"... Except for Rouge, she's the only one Sonic refers to by name. This along with the All of Me dialog fuels that Shadow is the POV Sonic's talking to since he's closer with her than Tails, Knuckles or Amy.

I’m a huge Shadouge fan and have been for almost 20 years. But I definitely respect and am open to the Sonadow crew. This is so far a very eye opening video to explore more of the fan base. I’m about 40min in but acknowledge the work and effort it took to do a 3hr documentary on them.

I remember playing Rouge’s story in Sonic Battle when I was 8 years old and wanted her and Shadow to be together haha! 💖 And then in middle school I’d watch all these Shadouge AMVs on UA-cam, and was obsessed with that one clip of Shadow catching Rouge in Sonic 06. REALLY GOOD VIDEO!!! The ''you need this" is my favorite part. By the way, there is actually, in a way, ''evidence'' that Sonic could be Maria's reincarnation. You have to go back to Shiro Maekawa, the writer for SA2. He was very inspired by a manga called "Please Save My Earth". Maria is heavily based on the protagonist and she is a reincarnation of the woman who lived on the Moon. On top of that, there are two male characters with one having romantic feelings over the other, due to the fact that in the previous reincarnations, he was a woman in love with him. Dang. That and the fact that Maekawa apparently likes Shadaria (Shadow and Maria’s ship), it would really makes sense. It would also tie with that japanese myth that you get reincarnated with the face of the person you loved the most in your past life (In Maria’s case, an Hedgehog) Although, I don’t think they’ll ever make that canon... Back in the SA2/StH games, I think it would have been fine (with the serie’s writing still being in that kind of sci-fi vibe where anything crazy could happen and fans would like it), but today it would probably be met with critics- I mean, I could totally see people thinking they’re just trying to push some kind of edgy story where it’s not needed or something like that, so yeah...

For him, what proves that Sonadow could have been a thing (read, greenlighted by SEGA) is the fact that, Shadow was supposed to be dead after SA2. Which is true! While it is a known fact, I feel like people don’t fully realize it nowdays bc Shadow is said to be immortal (Although It’s still not clear whether he’s only immune to natural causes of death, or any kind of death, but anyway--) Shadow was first created with the intent of being a one time character, and that’s why Maekawa was sooo careful when creating him, especially within the context of SA2 potentially being the last Sonic game ever. He was genuinally dead at the end of the game. Only brought back because he got too popular with the fans. Now let’s imagine a timeline where Shadow was not brought back, and where the Sonic Team decided to keep this ”Sonic is Maria” idea. Let’s say, at one point they confirmed this in a game, and, idk, Sonic remembered his past life and his feelings for Shads. It wouldn’t change anything... Because Shadow would be dead. It would have been a story of a character who got reincarnated, had the chance of meeting their past love again, to possibly have the life they both dreamed of together, only for him to die, and for the character not having been able to do anything abt it, or even telling him all they ever wanted to say, and having to live on with the loss and regrets. It’s a tragic love story, and that’s sadly often how LGBT relationships are depicted by heteros authors. Now, it was still a bit less the case on the japanese side (Sailor Moon being a good exemple), probably because homophobia really became a thing after Japan got invaded by the West, but it was still a recurrent enough trope for it to be a thing. It’s also kind of the only way LGBT relationships seems to be accepted by the hetero public (in general at least) for some reason? Basically, the argument here is that, SEGA was okay with Sonadow being a thing, because it still wouldn’t ”technically” happen, with Shadow being dead, and the fact that it was a gay realtionship wouldn’t have mattered, since A.Sonic was the reincarnation of a girl, and B. Shadow was dead anyway, making it an impossible love story, which was the best way to imply that kind of relationship to an audience that wouldn’t be very fond of it otherwise It’s kind of funny, but also sad, that I could actually see it being true 🥲

Hey there! The thing with the chao is correct! It's because the tails, knuckles, and amy chao are re-models of the neutral, hero, and dark chaos chao respectively and just like the chaos chao cannot mate or die ^^
To explain the "Shadic" thing, it's not really anything to do with shipping inherently, but more comes from both the Sonic franchise and Sonic fandom's overlap with Dragonball Z. In Dragonball Z, "Fusion" is a power-up mechanic where two characters can fuse together to become a stronger being, while also having their personality traits fused. The most popular examples being Vegito (fusion of Vegeta and Goku, with Vegeta being the more prevalent personality), Gogeta (fusion of Goku and Vegeta, with Goku being the more prevalent personality), and Gotenks (the fusion of Goten and Trunks, sharing equal amounts of their personality). (I might be slightly incorrect on the particulars there, but it should convey the basic gist) "Shadic" comes from the heavily Dragonball Z inspired, and extremely popular "Nazo Unleashed" fan animation, where Sonic and Shadow have to fuse together to become "Shadic", in order to gain enough power to defeat Nazo. Of course, I wouldn't be surprised if Sonadow shippers have probably used the concept in their own way, haha. Also, not really a Sonadow shipper, but I appreciate how enduring this side of the fandom has been as a lifelong Sonic fan myself, and this video is really engaging and interesting so far. Props to you for putting in the effort to make it!
I'll always appreciate people who explore the depth of these two's relationship in all forms! I've never needed something to be "canon" for me to find a ship to be great, but this was a delightful thing to watch in its entirety, both hilarious at times and really heartwarming others. It even showed me some things I had no idea about, which surprised me; particularly Maekawa's doujin purchase and the alternate translations for Sonic's dialogue in Prime, omg. As a fellow queer Sonic fan who has loved sonadow for quite some time, thanks a ton for making this!

I have been searching for a video like this, a Sonadow Analysis video that goes into their relationship and what it means to people that ship it. This is more of a History of Sonadow, but it still gets into why we ship it. I saw one Sonadow video that explains why it's important, but it felt more like a tangent than analytical (which is fine, but I couldn't follow their thoughts too much). I have been thinking of making my own Sonadow video and what it means to me, sort of why *I* ship it, but I didn't really see the use of it. It was almost like I wanted to convince others to "see the light" as well, however the main thing was I wanted to offer my view of the ship. 2:08:23 As someone who plays Speed Sim, that update actually had a couple other things not mentioned in the tweet. The "Sonic and Shadow Trail", which resembles the SA2 logo. And the "Cosmic Starshot", an original Extreme Gear design with one side red, one side blue, with a Chaos Spear going through the middle. Sort of a combination of the Blue Star and the Black Shot. I’m glad some of us can agree Homophobia sucks, feels likes it’s especially prevalent in the Sonic fandom spaces like they never grew out of the “gay ships are gross and cringe”, then again Sonic fandom has a special brand of ship discourse even with the non gay ones, but really besides a few most of the ships are cool as long as we’re keeping it wholesome.

An aroace person here. The whole "Sonic isn't interested in a romantic relationship" thing is very curious to me in particular, since I myself am a person who does not seek out romance, and still ended up in a relationship.
The queerplatonic relationship idea has become more popular in Sonadow spaces in the past couple of years, I've noticed, and while I'm VERY happy to feel represented through fanart... I haven't seen these messages from the man himself before, but like. To me, this is just screaming "our hedgehog is aromantic, no matter the relationship".

Sonic and Shadow being queerplatonic partners would literally fit into this narrative perfectly. They would be a team and show trust and care for each other in ways that aren't considered romantic. Shadow is THE partner for Sonic when it comes to not being pressured by traditional relationship expectations, I can't think of anyone else who would fit this narrative in a better way.

about the "shadow, you're okay!" panel, it's way more meaningful in context. in one of the megaman crossovers, sonic and megaman's worlds being merging together, and shadow, rouge, and omega stay behind in a gun building to try saving people, but the buildings that were merging end up exploding and killing them, and one of shadows ring falls to the ground and is caught by sonic, who is seemingly the only one upset by what happened. the events of the crossover end up turning back time and erasing everyone's memories, but sonic has a strange feeling and immediately asks nicole to call shadow for him, resulting in the panel.
tl;dr: shadow was killed; time reset; sonic still felt the effects of shadows death and was relieved to see he was ok. in conclusion, 🏳️🌈

Besides respecting Sonic a lot, Shadow was also implied to be fond of Sonic's banter and antics whenever they are around each other. Though that was something that Shadow doesn't admit to anyone else.

I LOVE your analysis on their relationship being much more nuanced than “polar opposites”…they’ve always had this really mysterious, push and pull to them like you said. On the surface they seem like they’d be “opposites attract”, but during the series, anytime they battle, it’s more like friendly competition between equals. They respect each other, and are fascinated by each other. Sonic is one of the only things that throws shadow off in sa2, while the rest of the time he’s able to keep up his “I know what I’m doing and I’m in control” persona. Awesome vid and I’m only 30 minutes in!

@@scootie_scootI know, I only show a screenshot of it a couple times throughout the video. 😔 By the time the Limited Runs version was announced, I was already very deep in the video editing stage. The voiceovers for the iceberg had been recorded, edited, and mixed with the background music and it was just too late to go back and edit. I believe voiceovers were all recorded by August 15th, with the exception of the artist shoutout.
I think if I had just kept re-editing, the video would be uploaded at a much later time with how quickly SEGA has been dropping trailers, updates, and Sonadow social media hijinks haha!

I remembered when The artist posted this, everyone then and till now use this gif bc still impact the each frame of the drawing. Sonic kiss shadow, shadow receiving it and the both of them just enjoying it. 38:45 I want to expand on this cause I was SO obsessed with this storyline when it came out as I am both a Sonic and Mega Man nerd
This happens right after the second Sonic and Mega Man crossover (worlds unite) like an issue or two later I think. So, close to the end of Worlds Unite Sonic and Mega Man go to help their friends in battle but when they get there a huge explosion happens and Sonic finds Shadows inhibitor ring, implying he died in battle, as we never see him again after this point. BUT at the climax of the story Sonic and Mega Man turn super to stop the doctors and create the super genesis wave to undo the events of the crossover and save everyone, however Eggman tried to attack Sonic during the proccess which ends up reseting EVERYTHING (the actual reason for this is that they had the Ken Penders lawsuit recently and had to basically start from scratch). At first no one remembers what happened during the crossover or the story that was happening right before it unless they interact with Nicole, so when Sonic is reminded of everything that happened one of the first things he does (if not the first but dont quote me on that cause I dont remember) is try to call Shadow to see if he succeeded in fixing everything, and he did!! Shadow is ok and doesn't remember what happened or why Sonic is calling him, right after that panel Sonic says nothing to explain the situation and is just relieved to see that he's alright and the call ends. I believe they never bring up this event again or let Shadow in on the events of W.U. after this moment but I may be wrong

-There's a cutscene tying Shadow Generations into the Shadow Boss Battle in Sonic Generations, where the pair quote their previous encounters in Adventure 2 and Heroes, as if this time-hopping adventure has made them nostalgic.
-Shadow refuses to use his new Doom Powers on Sonic, he claims "I'll beat him on equal terms or not at all" but I say he just didn't want to risk actually hurting him. It should be noted he gets increasingly aggressive over the course of the game as Black Doom tempts him with ever greater power, (perhaps best demonstrated in the Mephiles fight) so showing restraint against Sonic seems pretty meaningful.
-If you talk to Maria right after said cutscene, she says "He seems nice!" about Sonic, which is like, the go-to phrase when you think two people are a couple but don't know for sure yet.

Fun small thing about the "Shadonic" portion! -- I remember this shift to the use of the name becoming popular, at least on tumblr, around 2017-2018! I don't remember all of the intimate details but I believe it was like a sonadow fandom rebranding to try and distance themselves from the titular "Sonadow" which had all those years of mixed results and harrassment associated with it to something more modern and fresh, thus "Shadonic". I admittedly fell out of the fandom for a bit (new hyperfixation goes WEEE) so I didn't see a lot of the play-by-play for how that developed and I know I'd seen it briefly used in years prior, often by fans across the pond in Korea and Japan more, but nowadays it seems like "Sonadow" has regained positive traction enough that it's become the main tag used again, however most if not al tumblr posts still use Shadonic as a secondary tag!

You know, as someone who isn't too into shipping and didn't understood Sonadow (at least before the vid) I can see now why people might see the pair and think of it as them being in some sort of relationship. It's also kind of awesome how such a niche thing drives many others to create and develop new things (Art, Stories, etc.) . Yes, things can be a bit over the top. But if it's your way of having fun, there's nothing wrong with that.
It's also great how perception has changed over the years, I'm glad there is more acceptance and more people don't mind or even support the ship.

Honestly thank you for this huuuuge deep dive of the history and Lore of the ship I seriously appreciate it. And yknow, the ship wasn't always called Sonadow as much during the early 2000's vs. Now, in fact it was referred to (at first) as Shadonic but that ship name definitely phased out a lot over time because everyone thought Sonadow rolled off the tongue better, understandably. But yeah all my Sonic fan friends in middle school were calling it Shadonic and we enjoyed it so much. We even had a little fan club in school and one of my teachers supported it. I made Flipnote Hatena Animations for it before Flipnote Hatena was discontinued by Nintendo. Those were really good days... I miss those days a lot..
The funny thing about "don't be a stranger" is that it's not early days as you believed, it's the last page that the incredibly infamous Ken Penders ever wrote.
Also in the musical gift, when you give Sonic themes of other characters, he refers to them in broad, unspecific terms, like "this song reminds me of a certain (insert species here) I'm sure they'll love it"... Except for Rouge, she's the only one Sonic refers to by name. This along with the All of Me dialog fuels that Shadow is the POV Sonic's talking to since he's closer with her than Tails, Knuckles or Amy.

I’m a huge Shadouge fan and have been for almost 20 years. But I definitely respect and am open to the Sonadow crew. This is so far a very eye opening video to explore more of the fan base. I’m about 40min in but acknowledge the work and effort it took to do a 3hr documentary on them.
Thank you so much! 🥺🙏 Shadouge was one of the first Sonic ships that I adored as a kid. I remember playing Rouge’s story in Sonic Battle when I was 8 years old and wanted her and Shadow to be together haha! 💖
And then in middle school I’d watch all these Shadouge AMVs on UA-cam, and was obsessed with that one clip of Shadow catching Rouge in Sonic 06. Those were good times! 🥹🤭

REALLY GOOD VIDEO!!! The ''you need this" is my favorite part. By the way, there is actually, in a way, ''evidence'' that Sonic could be Maria's reincarnation. You have to go back to Shiro Maekawa, the writer for SA2. He was very inspired by a manga called "Please Save My Earth". Maria is heavily based on the protagonist and she is a reincarnation of the woman who lived on the Moon. On top of that, there are two male characters with one having romantic feelings over the other, due to the fact that in the previous reincarnations, he was a woman in love with him. It makes a lot of sense that Shiro Maekawa bought that Sonadow doujin 💀 (and he was also the writer for Sonic and the Black Knight as well)

Dang. That and the fact that Maekawa apparently likes Shadaria (Shadow and Maria’s ship), it would really makes sense.
It would also tie with that japanese myth that you get reincarnated with the face of the person you loved the most in your past life (In Maria’s case, an Hedgehog)
Although, I don’t think they’ll ever make that canon... Back in the SA2/StH games, I think it would have been fine (with the serie’s writing still being in that kind of sci-fi vibe where anything crazy could happen and fans would like it), but today it would probably be met with critics- I mean, I could totally see people thinking they’re just trying to push some kind of edgy story where it’s not needed or something like that, so yeah...

@@princessimi Holy shat, I send the video to a friend and told him abt this, and he gave me an argument for this theory, I NEED to share it. For him, what proves that Sonadow could have been a thing (read, greenlighted by SEGA) is the fact that, Shadow was supposed to be dead after SA2.
Which is true! While it is a known fact, I feel like people don’t fully realize it nowdays bc Shadow is said to be immortal (Although It’s still not clear whether he’s only immune to natural causes of death, or any kind of death, but anyway--)
Shadow was first created with the intent of being a one time character, and that’s why Maekawa was sooo careful when creating him, especially within the context of SA2 potentially being the last Sonic game ever. He was genuinally dead at the end of the game. Only brought back because he got too popular with the fans.
Now let’s imagine a timeline where Shadow was not brought back, and where the Sonic Team decided to keep this ”Sonic is Maria” idea.
Let’s say, at one point they confirmed this in a game, and, idk, Sonic remembered his past life and his feelings for Shads. It wouldn’t change anything... Because Shadow would be dead.
It would have been a story of a character who got reincarnated, had the chance of meeting their past love again, to possibly have the life they both dreamed of together, only for him to die, and for the character not having been able to do anything abt it, or even telling him all they ever wanted to say, and having to live on with the loss and regrets.
It’s a tragic love story, and that’s sadly often how LGBT relationships are depicted by heteros authors. Now, it was still a bit less the case on the japanese side (Sailor Moon being a good exemple), probably because homophobia really became a thing after Japan got invaded by the West, but it was still a recurrent enough trope for it to be a thing. It’s also kind of the only way LGBT relationships seems to be accepted by the hetero public (in general at least) for some reason?
Basically, the argument here is that, SEGA was okay with Sonadow being a thing, because it still wouldn’t ”technically” happen, with Shadow being dead, and the fact that it was a gay realtionship wouldn’t have mattered, since
A.Sonic was the reincarnation of a girl, and
B. Shadow was dead anyway, making it an impossible love story, which was the best way to imply that kind of relationship to an audience that wouldn’t be very fond of it otherwise

Hey there! The thing with the chao is correct! It's because the tails, knuckles, and amy chao are re-models of the neutral, hero, and dark chaos chao respectively and just like the chaos chao cannot mate or die ^^
To explain the "Shadic" thing, it's not really anything to do with shipping inherently, but more comes from both the Sonic franchise and Sonic fandom's overlap with Dragonball Z.
In Dragonball Z, "Fusion" is a power-up mechanic where two characters can fuse together to become a stronger being, while also having their personality traits fused. The most popular examples being Vegito (fusion of Vegeta and Goku, with Vegeta being the more prevalent personality), Gogeta (fusion of Goku and Vegeta, with Goku being the more prevalent personality), and Gotenks (the fusion of Goten and Trunks, sharing equal amounts of their personality).
(I might be slightly incorrect on the particulars there, but it should convey the basic gist)
"Shadic" comes from the heavily Dragonball Z inspired, and extremely popular "Nazo Unleashed" fan animation, where Sonic and Shadow have to fuse together to become "Shadic", in order to gain enough power to defeat Nazo.
Of course, I wouldn't be surprised if Sonadow shippers have probably used the concept in their own way, haha.
Also, not really a Sonadow shipper, but I appreciate how enduring this side of the fandom has been as a lifelong Sonic fan myself, and this video is really engaging and interesting so far. Props to you for putting in the effort to make it!

I'll always appreciate people who explore the depth of these two's relationship in all forms! I've never needed something to be "canon" for me to find a ship to be great, but this was a delightful thing to watch in its entirety, both hilarious at times and really heartwarming others. It even showed me some things I had no idea about, which surprised me; particularly Maekawa's doujin purchase and the alternate translations for Sonic's dialogue in Prime, omg. I have been searching for a video like this, a Sonadow Analysis video that goes into their relationship and what it means to people that ship it. This is more of a History of Sonadow, but it still gets into why we ship it. I saw one Sonadow video that explains why it's important, but it felt more like a tangent than analytical (which is fine, but I couldn't follow their thoughts too much).
I have been thinking of making my own Sonadow video and what it means to me, sort of why *I* ship it, but I didn't really see the use of it.
