💯 Modal Soul is my favorite album of all time. It just speaks to me. It’s positivity is infectious while also realistic. It isn’t saccharine but really a more whole purity that comes from somewhere genuine like the soul as opposed to the bank account if you know what I mean.

Its done in alot of sample based beats. Alot of the time its hard to find a bass to match the sample tone wise or the person making the beat isn't very good with music theory or they like the tone of the bass in the original sample and they just want to make it more dominant.
Such a shame he died so young, imagine all the new albums/songs he would have for the world to enjoy, it really upsets me because there are no other musicians close to his talent/creativeness on his genre. Guess it's a be thankful because it happened and not that it's gone scenario. RIP Nujabes

Grew up listening to Nujabes as a young teenager on the internet. Such a vast world to explore, eventually I found Funky DL, Big Jon, J Dilla, so on. Love this song, thanks for posting a breakdown of it

This is one of my favorite beats of all time.
I love that Double EQ trick he did, J Dilla had a similar one, where he'd take the highs out of a sample and then bring them all back for the Chorus to fill it out.
It seems Nujabes did something similar but he EQ'd the high end out of the beat and doubled it to emphasize the sample.
Truly a genius.

Accidentally discovered Nujabes while shopping for vinyl to sample at Tower Records in Shibuya. For anyone who hasn't been there, they got lots of headphone set-ups to listen to a ton of different albums. The first pair of headphones I threw on had Modal Soul and thank god Feather is the first track on it, because I was hooked and bought it instantly. Went back to the States a couple days later, couldn't stop listening to it, and indubitably changed the way I was producing music. There is no artist I'm more devastated to have died prematurely 💔

True story: Jun was one of the greatest people I’ve ever known. We were literally writing music/songs for his next album that I would be prominently featured as he wanted to get into having songs with singing as well as rap and I was going to make my debut as a singer for his label. We worked for more than two years from California to Japan and when he passed away, so did my opportunity…but truthfully, it’s not about me. He was such an amazing guy and as beautiful as his music was , it truly was only a sample (pun intended) of how amazing his soul was. no matter what, when I hear his music so many emotions come back to me. The world truly lost one of the greatest! RIP Jun. thank you always for seeing something in me no one else did before. ❤😢 maybe I’ll send those unreleased songs to his family so the world can hear one day.
