    The automatic stop/start can be turned off in 3 ways. The easiest way is when you push the gear selector to Drive to push it again, causing a shift to Low. That turns off stop/start until the next time you deliberately turn off the engine. It also changes the shift points, making the car a bit more peppy.
    The second simplest way is to choose Sport mode, which also changes shift points.
    The third way is to go into the menu system and locate the stop/start function. Then you can disable the function, again only until you deliberately turn off the engine. This approach can be made less bothersome by a long press on the stop/start icon to enable making it a shortcut. If you do that, then no matter what screen is displayed a bright dash appears at the top right, and pressing this dash takes you to the shortcut, so you don’t have to search for it. Using this method, the shift points for the vehicle are not altered, unlike the first two methods.

    That ‘parking assistant’ you tested is actually just a memory of the last 650ft of your last drive called “maneuver assist”, so the car was reversing the exact route you took whilst driving into that spot before the shoot. It’s capable of remembering up to 10 different locations to memory too, which is honestly very cool and helpful

    I’m liking the return of all these sleek door handles like we had in the 80’s through early 2000, and not the giant drawer handles we see on most modern vehicles. I know it’s a small nitpick but jsut makes the side of vehicles so much nicer looking

    • @Alexx120493
      @Alexx120493 Рік тому +1

      Until they realize that those drawer handles are there for a reason. You aint forcing open a door with those sleek handles after a crash. Even recently 4 people burned to death in their Tesla after a crash because bystanders were unable to open the doors from the outside (retractable door handles did not move outwards) and were unable to smash in the laminated windows to try open them from the inside before the fire engulfed the car.
      Afterwards an investigation found that the rear doors can't even be opened from the inside after a crash when the power to the electric door mechanism is lost.

    • @quantumlab9130
      @quantumlab9130 Рік тому +2

      those are not the kind I’m referring too… I’m specifically mean ones like on this bmw where they don’t retract, they’re just more subtle and flow nicely with the lines of the cars. I don’t like the fully retracting one either to be fair.

    • @lukasschmitz7231
      @lukasschmitz7231 Рік тому +2

      Agreed. It just makes the side of the car so much smoother. Plus i personally have a better feeling opening a car door with the sleek door handle.

    • @Alexx120493
      @Alexx120493 Рік тому

      Unfortunately the ones like on the BMW in the video are only marginally better. Usually the "flap" just snaps off when you pull on them. If I remember correctly the whole reason why they switched from the sleek type of door handle to the drawer handle was for that reason.
      Although I tore off a drawer type handle on a Golf Mk3 before as well because they weren't all that well made@@quantumlab9130

    We are on a 39 days roundtrip in western USA and have driven a rental 2023 BMW x1, 2.8ltr for about 3.500 miles. Very nice to drive, but a terrible layout on the dash and infotainment system. It is very confusing and takes lots of your attention away from your driving. If you use the GPS you have to change the picture to ventilation/ac control, or to media control, and then back. All the time you must pinpoint a dot on the screen to choose the right point and function. Not very easy when the car is bumping and moving just a little bit. Then we had to change car because of oilservice.
    We got a 2023 BMW X2 2.8 ltr. A little bit shorter and narrover than the X1, but ok. It drives as good as the X1, and what a relief, it has a much better and more traditional layout on the dash. Ordinary speedo and rpm instruments, and the GPS, ac controls and media controls are separat. We are still driving this car and will be happy with it for about another 3.500 miles.

    I would caution anyone considering these at this point in time. My wife has has one, one of the first ones in our state of ca, and it's been having transmission issues already with less than 6k miles. The transmission will randomly rev hang in a gear and not shift up/down. So far its only happened on the freeway, and we drive this car moderately. It's gotten us in some sketchy situations and we ended up opening a case with bmw. There are multiple owners experiencing this same issue across bmw forums.

    I wonder why BMW isn't using a system like Mercedes with their integrated starter/generator approach. Smooth and seamless starts and restarts, less vibration, torque fill, MPG gains, beltless engine design, etc. Seems like a no-brainer for a premium car. Rough stop/start and that acceleration latency would have me cross this off my list.

    • @keyboardbrick1686
      @keyboardbrick1686 Рік тому +5

      no, depending on the engine, BMW uses that system as well. The start-stop is then very seamless IF it's paired with a ZF slushbox. The DCT in FWD models is jerky.

    • @myemailiscool
      @myemailiscool 11 місяців тому +1

      my m340i has the little electric 48v mild hybrid and the stop start is insanely smooth, with the ZF. which is good cuz it's not really easy to turn off lol

    • @OscarZheng50
      @OscarZheng50 10 місяців тому +1

      BMW does have the 48v mild hybrid for super smooth auto start stop like the ones in the Mercedes but they're found on BMW's more pricey offerings. you can find the mild hybrid on the latest X5 and X7, but the X1 is like a budget BMW so it wont have all the gadgets the more expensive models would have

    • @johnbrews9724
      @johnbrews9724 Місяць тому

      Stop/start can be turned off, although it has to be done every time you deliberately start the engine. The easiest way is when you shift into Drive to press shift once more and go into Low.

    my sister just got one, I actually really liked it driving in sport mode but the start/stop hesitation off the line is very annoying, also that auto parking remembers how you pulled in so it follows it in reverse. it work pretty well and is very useful if you suck at parking/backing out of spots.

    I liked that not so subtle dig at BMW drivers: “if you are going to use your turn signals in your BMW X1…” 😅

  • @ARentz07
    @ARentz07 7 місяців тому

    So, I've got one of these as a loaner, and have owned an X3 with the back-up assist. All it does is retrace your steps in reverse. It's pretty useful for backing out of tricky driveways.
    However, revisiting this video, I am surprised just how much of your thoughts I agree with. The turn signals do, in fact, feel high-quality to use. 😁 Mine has Pirelli P Zero All-Season tires, and I think they must be better than the Continentals. If I plant my foot while pulling out onto a street, they put the power down well, and the steering response from them is good. The delay off the line from the DCT seems to be present no matter if auto-start-stop is on or not... It's irritating to drive this car in-town as a result. If they could do something about that and maybe soften the suspension a bit, this X1 would be pretty great.

  • @ARentz07
    @ARentz07 Рік тому +17

    BMW really needs to tweak their stop-start to be more conservative. It is one of the biggest issues I've had with the two BMWs I've owned. If it simply waited until the car came to a complete stop, that alone would be a big improvement. I much preferred how the start-stop system operated in my VW GLI.

    The amount of rattle and cricks right when you start moving is just ridiculous. DCT in a car like this as well as a start-stop system is another downside for this vehicle. Touch screen for the climate, turbo-lag, the list goes on. Wouldn't suggest anyone buying it to be honest.

    Great review! Some great real world feedback 😊 I heard many people say about the lag when you pull away - does using sport mode fix it it is just a little better? It’s such a shame - I drove a loan iX2 and that was fine pulling away with the electric drivetrain so I’m guessing the iX1 would be fine (if electric works for you).

    My mom just had one of these as a rental car. She said it was the fastest cars she ahs ever driven 😂. For a starting price of 40 grand I think this is a better value than the 3 Series, for people not interested in the driving dynamics. The tire noise was pretty jarring, I haven't really spent a lot of time in the G chassis 3 Series but I feel like it would handle a lot better than that. Either way, this was a fun watch!

    I'm only watching this, because this months there is a chance to win a new BMW X1 in a local shop chain promotion lottery. Wish me (or whoever else) luck! 😆
    Haven't driven a BMW for at least 15-18 years, and even then it was E36 (316 of company in the cheapest possible version - got drums on rear axle instead of disk brakes; around 10-12 year old at that point) and and our family's old E28 (528i) before that. Honestly, I would never choose an SUV myself, as those can't take corners at a decent speed. However in winters here up North all wheel drive would be nice, but that's also possible with an X-drive, Quattro, Sinchro and other 4x4 systems on cars, without disadvantages of SUV's with their high center of mass.

      I’m actually shocked to hear that and disagree. My mom owns a 2018 X1 and we have lots of recent BMW’s in the family - 2021 X5, 2017 340i, 2023 X3.
      The x1 has the best steering feedback and weight by FAR - it rivals even the f80 m3 and is better than the new G80. Of that set, it has the quietest engine note which is nice in cabin, but a relatively rowdy exhaust from the outside on a pull away (at least on par with the 340. It’s far more refined than the x3 engine for some reason but of course doesn’t sound as good as the B58.
      The ride is firm but well controlled and the interior is huge considering the exterior size. It actually rotates on trail braking and you can get it step out easier than the x3.
      It’s not super quiet on the freeway but other than that, it’s awesome. What were your thoughts?

    Terrible design to remove the start-stop physical button while pairing it with a dual clutch transmission. Looks like the solution maybe to buy a OBD dongle, and use Bimmercode to disable stop-start from the BCM options. This feature is garbage on pre-2023 X1s, and downright dangerous on the 2023 version.
