British and Europe aristocrats would consider these people new money, as their ancestors(Astor) just immigrated to america to make a living.
Lesson: All "Old money" always start as new money. It doesn't matter if your money is new , if it's earned from personal hardwork it deserve to be cherished and respected.

@Mister X The astors ancestor first selling flutes and immigrated to america to become a merchant in the early 19th century (they were still new money). Eventually in the late 19th century the Astors have established and became old money while they considered the Russells(Vanderbilt) as new money as the vabderbilt were still new in their railroad business.

The pride of old money is that they do not "earn" their money. Family fortune must be made at least 3 generations before and these people do not "work".
