Remember that not only foundation, but mascara, liquid eyeliner and concealer are also supposed to go in the 3-1-1 bag. I had to do a quick shuffle some years ago.
No, I have never put those things in my clear bag and I travel 3-4 times a year internationally, with multiple flights. Plus, I also do not put the mini samples of eye cream, face cream, etc., in there, because I have forgotten so many times to put those in my clear bag and have never been stopped for that. I do think non-US airports are not as strict.
I’m a pretty experienced traveler, but the liquids thing always stresses me out. Your tips were super helpful (esp. the face washing bar and powder dry shampoo)!
Couple of things to add: - makeup sample containers are excellent for ruthless travel decanting. Screw-top pots can carry moisturiser, lipbalm & facewash. Armani’s tiny little glass foundation sample bottles, with the inbuilt dabber, are great for a few days’ worth of perfume. - Shrink your deodorant. I emptied out an old lipstick case, sliced off a portion of stick deodorant and slotted it into the case. Unless you’re going on a long trip it should be more than enough & takes up hardly any room.
Mascara and perfume, which I take, need to go in TSA bag too. I don’t use foundation, moisterisers or nail polish which are also liquids. It’s great to have vids like yours to make it all much clearer. 👏
A great option for those sneaky pimples are pimple patches. They’re clear solid patches therefore you don’t have to put them in your liquids bag ! Plus they work wonders !
Toothpaste and mouthwash tabs are gamechangers for freeing up soace. So happy to discover them for my last trip. Bar lotion was an epic fail. My skin just laughed. I ended up buying regular lotion on my 2nd day.
I appreciate this as i truly have a "liquids issue". I can pack small but those darn liquids get me every time! I think i can finally do this tho. I had to pick and choose what I really needed, and it was painful (self-inflicted!). My saving grace is also using contact lens cases for eye creams, face creams, etc. Don't need a lot even for a week!
Reusable makeup eraser cloths, bug repellent wipes, SPF powder (both supergoop and colorscience make varieties), hand sanitizer wipes, and makeup removing balms (which are solids) are good options. Coconut oil will stay in a solid state if it’s not warm out, too, and can make a good moisturizer, makeup remover, or shave balm. Also any prescriptions can go in a 2nd bag (so contact lenses, prescription retinol creams, etc. don’t have to count against you 3-1-1 limit). Carry on travel is also when I go through all the Sephora samples that I seem to accumulate throughout the year 😂
I would be careful about the solid makeup removing balms. TSA threw mine out as they said it does classify as a cream/liquid since once you touch the product it starts to me,t down to a liquid. Same would apply for coconut oil 😢
I flew from Edinburgh airport in Scotland a few weeks ago, and my stuff got flagged by the machine for extra screening, because the machine got confused by my prescription meds in a second bag 😂 It was fine, they just needed to make sure my prescription matched my passport, but I've flown with the same medication for years, and this was the first time I ever had an issue.
Love the tips. Going to find some dry shampoo powder and solid sun screen. That bag is not 1 qt. It is much bigger. Just because it went through TSA doesn’t mean it’s compliant. It just means that they didn’t pull you out of line for it…yet.
I like the idea of a clear bag that is not a ziplock, but that one looks more like it would hold two quarts! A one quart baggie really doesn’t hold much!
The link she gives is to a two-pack, but of different sizes (9.6"×3.1"×6.5" and 7.9"×2.4"×5.5"). She's using the larger of the two - which is NOT a quart. Only the smaller one is listed as "TSA approved".
Hackety hack hack, take a sandwich size Ziploc bag, or snack size if you need less. Fill it up with cotton rounds then pour in your micellar water until saturated. Make sure all cotton rounds are covered well, but no excess. Zip her up, squeeze out any air and put in your carry on with other stuff NOT your 3-1-1, honest I did 2 months worth of them, which lasted me 5 months, because hey, I wasn't wearing make-up everyday. They didn't go bad, or get stale, just make sure to zip tight after each use.😀❤️😀 I've done this for much shorter trips as well. As long as they soak up your micellar or equivalent in your backpack, separately looks and, kind of?????? is a solid. More room for other stuff. When you squeeze it down, straight up takes no space in your non 3-1-1 backpack. I need the extra room for sensitive skin sunscreen which I decant into tsa approved bottles as you suggested.😀😀😀❤️😀😀😀
I travelled Denver to Italy with that sort of clear, zippered bag. No problem with TSA here or whatever they call it over there. I was super impressed with flying with carry on only for a week. They got me coming back because of the weight. It was all okay because I didn’t care if they lost it coming home.
I travel a lot and I have never used the 3-1-1 system. I have a zip up canvas pouch I use. I never had any problems. I have gotten my carry on pulled to the side for checks twice. Once, I got Cheese from Belgium, and the second time Leeches in NYC. Never for toiletries. Didn’t get my purchases taken away either. I actually brought a tub of body cream from Colombia that I was sure would be confiscated, but it didn’t. I don’t thinks is as strict as people think. I’m actually in Spain right now. I brought full sized deodorant, full sized Mac foundation, full sized tooth paste, full sized mascara. I did just bring sample size Clinique cream and cleansers.
This WAS AWESOME!!!!. Thank you:). I love 💘 it. Just a little tip hack I learned for creams if only traveling for a week is to use contact containers 😊 they take up VERY little space. I tried it and have been very successful. Thank you again.
I was laughing with you on stealing your partner's bag space. I always pack both our liquids bag and put anything we share like bug spray, sunscreen, body lotion in his bag. I love those Amazon travel bottles too because if they are not completely full, you can squeeze out the air and save space. Another thing is that hand sanitizer (up to 12 oz) can be separate from your liquids bag!
Just an FYI, last summer, I was on a domestic flight in the US, and the TSA took my makeup cleansing balm. I thought that was weird because it is more of a solid/waxy substance, but they insisted it was considered a liquid.
Yup same happened to me on my last flight. I was so sad as I had just purchased a new cleansing balm. Never had the issue before until my most recent flight
Probably because they considered it a "paste", meaning it could be spread. "Paste" was added a while back. They didn't use to have "paste" on the list. Also, powders are limited in quantity/volume.
I just flew fom NJ to Fla a week ago and had all my liquids in travel size containers but they were NOT in a quart bag. The bag was bigger and I was not stopped or questioned. Helpful video
@@ranidayz09 i’ve flown before but never with just a carry on and personal, so my brother told me that, just in case the workers are in a bad mood the morning i leave, to wrap my clear bag up in some of my clothes. A lot of my stuff is needed, but it’s not prescription (like face wash that was recommended by my doctors, allergy meds that are prescribed and come in a giant bottle (i have rlly bad allergies) etc.)
Thanks for this video. I've been flying many years, but have almost always checked a big bag. I'm getting ready to try a carry-on for a 4 day trip. I had NO idea about the TSA toiletry/liquids rules---I just lucked into your video, so Thank You!
I always carry my liquids in my carry-on (with any valuables, makeup, electronics, and an extra change of clothes) in case my checked either doesn't make it or gets delayed.. 🤷🏻♀️ It's happened before.
2 quick tips: 1-if you have TSA Pre-check then you don’t have to worry too much about where you put your liquid bag since you don’t usually have to take it out. 2-if you have small children with you, you can bring extra liquids: water, yogurt, milk, apple sauce, etc. I will just go through extra screening.
I travel for work and have had a lot of luck with packing my gel deodorant and makeup remover balm outside of my quart baggie. I also recommend micellar water wipes - I’ve had luck with tucking those in my personal item as well
TSA regulations for a liquids bag dimensions state: 6"x9". The bag you recommend (which I really like) comes in a 2-pack. One is too small: 7.9"x5.5", and the other is too large: 9.6"x6.5".
Hi there, the TSA’s regulation is 1 quart. 6x9 is an approximated rule of thumb. You should have no issues with the larger of the two in that set. From the TSA “As long as the toiletry bag is the approximate dimensions of a quart-sized bag (6″ x 9″), you’ll be good to go through the checkpoint.” I found this article helpful: travelinglight.com/quart-size-bag/
@@awaytogether officially it is still too big as 6x9 is for a flat bag. Once you add the depth of this type bag they are easily 1.5 times the size actually allowed. That being said it will often depend on the people/countries/airports. In our country we approach more as 10x100ml. So obviously that would require a larger bag. 🤷🏻♀️ It does get confusing at times.
I had two flights this week after not having flown for decades and I watched so many videos about the liquids bag and they didn’t want to see them either flight😮
I've tried using those approved TSA liquids bags from Amazon and each time the security people told me to dump it out and put the contents into one of the plastic ziploc bags they provide. I grab a handful whenever we go thru security now.
There are airports which will give you an unpleasant surprise. The Stansted Airport in the UK ( mostly budget flights on small aircrafts, like Ryan Air to various countries in Europe) will hand you a sandwich baggie that's hard to keep closed. It's a far cry from the quart size container. You have to be able to get your liquids in and seal the bag. Many things get tossed. Using 2oz bottles help. I've learned to buy things at the destination, like deep conditioner. Before departing back home, there's so little of the liquids left, I end up pitching most of them.
And the different UK airports apply the rules inconsistently 😂 I probably haven't flown through Stansted since 2016, but out of the ones I've used the most (Heathrow, Manchester and Edinburgh), Manchester tends to be the most persnickety.
@@laulutar I've flown from Manchester a few times recently, they seem to have relaxed a little compared to how they used to be and the staff are now really friendly. That airport used to be such a nightmare.
The bags you get at the airport are approved security standard 1 litre bags, they don't vary from airport to airport. Having looked it up because I had no idea what a quart was, they are in fact just a little larger.
I strongly recommend investing in an actual good quality quart size clear cosmetic case. The length and height are approximately the same as a quart size Ziploc bag but you get more width....usually about two inches, way more space than a plastic baggie.
Yes. I've been taking Clinique soap bars with me to travel for years. So compact and high quality. It is wonderful. You're the first person I've heard that does that also. I'm not sure how I started, but I used to get the smaller sample size bars when Clinique dealers would run their promotions (to get a bonus cosmetic bag and several samples). I just make sure to let the bar dry out on some type of elevated surface, like over a cup. When the bars are dry, you don't need to put them in any sort of case. For me, the sample size stick deodorants are bad. I must be heavy handed because the bar part always breaks off. So my one full size item is a full size stick deodorant. There really isn't that much more product on the full size ones.
I have packed hair gel, vaseline and other products in contact lens cases without going in my liquids bag. It's never been a problem but I'm willing to throw them away if necessary. When we flew in the spring, we were told to leave everything in our personal item bag. The agents just said make sure our water bottles were empty.🤷♀️
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I ❤ your video. I'm a first time flyer. I will be flying to Tennessee next week, and I was looking for a video such as yours to break everything down for me. Thanks again.
OMG of all the other UA-camrs who talk about TSA and all that they talk about the balls but you’re the first one who’s ever showed me the silicone ones which I actually just got two of them for my upcoming trip so I’m leaving on at the end of the week is the first UA-camr, who specializes in flying in trip travel who’s actually shot the silicone ones which is after the one that I have I have the pink and purple one myself and when I was looking to head up to different types they only ever shown the hard plastic ones and when I went to get mine there to do it harder past scores one really hard, one and one that was hard, but was still too hard for me to do mobility issues. Find Moscow issues, but the silicone ones are Assi also good for those people who might have dexterity issues like myself, the easier to squeeze that in the hard plastic ones I am now going to buy the silicone ones as a Main, who travels a lot, or at least tries to travel want to travel as much as possible. Well they have said to see it because it slowly going blind, but also has dexterity issues, and you can have Paul squeeze in the ones that are made out of horror plastic. Those so-called ones awesome they fit into TSA regulations the cheap enough. It seem like they will travel well and hold up in the easy for people who might have a hard time with dexterity like myself I think in the Constance out of them once in. so thank you for throwing that deposit kind of not the one time that they had a silicone ones I am now swing by the silicone ones myself
I use Bella's Goat's Milk soap bar for face wash, body wash, and hair wash. That's my game-changer. Also, I recommend acne patches that takes up literally no space and they work amazing.
Powder toothpaste is awesome to substitute with as well and saturated cotton rounds with your micellar water or toner in a snack size ziplock baggie doesn't count against your liquids.
I’m pretty sure that any kind of wet wipe is not considered a liquid so you can get face cleaning wipes, hand sanitizer wipes, makeup remover wipes and personal hygiene wipes. You can also make dried toothpaste drops at home and put them in a plastic jar.
I usually just use cotton rounds and soak them with my toner etc and put them in a plastic bag. They get through security just fine as do my Clorox wipes.
I didn’t know you can pack disposable razors in your carry on. I usually throw mine and larger bottles in my check bags. But that’s good for a future trip where I’m only taking a carry on.
Why not just use a quart sized Ziplock bag, put all you things in it, and then put them in the clear bag of your choice. Take the Ziplock in your personal bag in case you need to transfer things back. I got global entry because most of our travels are outside the US.
Being a man who shaves his head my entire liquid bag is a small sample toothpaste and 100ml bottle of hand sanitizer, and liquid bug spray. All of which can be found at my destination. I’ve considered taking ZERO liquids and pastes just to confuse the tsa agents but I feel like not having ANY liquids to show them would make them suspicious enough to double check me 😂
Just flew from Myrtle Beach. TSA did not want me to take my clear liquids bag out of my carry on bag. They actually said don’t take anything out at all. Also flying from Stewart International I was not required to take belt off. I guess rules are changing everyday.
Rules don’t change, but their interpretation changes with each agent - which is covered by the disclaimer that the action taken is solely at the discretion of the TSA agent who puts hands on your property. This little loophole is what allows agents to be downright thieves and total idiots with indisputable authority to do whatever they like. Example: agent in Barcelona passes through 4 ounces of clearly marked prescription medication needed during flight accompanied by a doctor’s letter, while the next agent confiscates it. The same agent confiscated the tubbing to our cpap machine. On Multiple legs from Europe to the US last week: one agent passes an unopened box of chocolates, while the next agent confiscated the same box saying it “might” contain liquid centers and anyway was a disallowed food product. And if you are a female, how would you like to be called out of line by a surly male agent who swabs your hands and suddenly and without a word and no warning reaches out and pulls up your shirt and swabs your belly - that’s called a temperature check - in public. Now we can all rest easy in flight, knowing we are “safe” in the hands of government agents.
If it helps, the bigger bag is 9.6x6.5 inches. A quart is normal 7x8 and they are okay if it's "about" a quart... So the bigger bag is definitely okay. It's just shorter in height and longer in length!
@@JadeBonifacio your best bet is to get a ziplock sandwich bag to use for your liquids. I don't know about in the USA, but we have some that say airport approved (or something similar). You can buy them in the supermarket here. Maybe see if Walmart or somewhere has them. It will potentially make you life much easier when travelling, especially as Heathrow has had a lot of issues recently.
You’re mistaken about food having to go in the liquids bag. Only liquid foods and items such as peanut butter need to be in the liquids bag. Snacks, sandwiches, and other food items only need to be in a separate bag, but not the liquids bag.
Thank you thank you thank you for the sunscreen recommendation, instead of the tired old "just buy it when you're there". 1) I don't want to run errands on trips, I want to spend time enjoying my trip! 2) have you seen how expensive sunscreen is in beach towns? Like twice the normal cost.
I do have a hack for peanut / almond butter. I like to eat mine scooping it up with apple slices. But that won't fly, because it's a "paste". So I cut up the apple slices onto chunks, mix my nut butter with the chunks and put it all in a small rigid plastic food container. It flies!!!
Although the rules are pretty much the same in other countries, be aware that TSA pre-check only applies to the US. Comes from experience of quite a few American passengers holding up the security line because they don't separate liquids etc. Also nowhere else in the world uses imperial units but although they quote the requirements in metric, it is effectively the same.
It's a bit trickier for those of us who wear makeup. Mascara, foundation and concealer goes in there too. And I have yet to find a solid sunscreen that I actually like that's not a greasy mess.
In my recent experience on domestic Canadian flights, they ask you to move all your liquids into an airport approved zip bag with green/orange airplane graphic. Any other clear plastic bag simply doesn't fly.
Yes. It appears US citizens when travelling in their own country have different and inconsistent enforcement of their regulations. I have one of those specific bags stored in my carry on for when I travel.
Had this at Pearson too. The problem was, the specific airport bags weren't readily available. I would have take more if I could have found them! They have me one, but it's already tearing unfortunately.
Yup, just had this issue as well flying through the U.K and through Germany and had items confiscated both times and my water proof zip pouch is smaller than the clear one in your video
Slice a portion of a solid soap bar and just take what you need. Store solid soaps in a small matador brand soap bag! You can shrink the portions down so much. I use a solid bar lush brand shampoo and conditioner.
I switched to toothpaste tablets and for a weekend trip, I’ll count out 3 tablets per day and put into s small go tube silicone jar, the whole toothpaste tablet container isn’t very large so it’d be perfect for a 6 month trip. They work as good or better than toothpaste. I use Burt’s Bees colored lip balm and a stick cheek color/lipstick, solid concealer and powdered Lancôme foundation that can be applied wet or dry, so the only makeup that goes in my 3-1-1 bag is mascara. I also take the powdered hair shampoo and bought Shampoo bars, but haven’t tried them yet. I’m like you, I throw everything in my 3-1-1 bag. I hate buying a cute makeup bag and having to split things up just for TSA. We have TSA Precheck, but our airport doesn’t honor it, so we can keep our shoes and sweaters on, but are required to pull out our liquids bag and laptops/iPads. Great video…impressive traveling 6 mo and 40 flights! Hope to do that when my hubby retires!
I love my Lush shampoo and conditioner bars for travel and you don’t need to take the whole bar. Just either use a veggie peeler to shave off whatever amount you think you might need for the duration of your trip or cut the bars in half or quarters. That also helps to reduce weight as some airlines are weighing carry on and personal items. I definitely agree in swapping out as many liquids for solids as you can. Even some mascaras come as solids or did anyway. For your face liquid cleanser, try putting some on makeup remover pads.
Thanks for sharing! Love a few of your recs, definitely gotta look into solid lotion! Btw-your bag is waaayy bigger than 1-quart, while there are many lenient TSA agents, you don’t want to run into the “wrong” agent with that bag full of your liquids.
Years ago I stopped carrying liquids seeing the problems that they present. I use shampoo bar and toothpaste pills. If I am staying at a hotel they provide shampoo and such. Also where ever I am going there will be stores for just about anything I might require.
Instead of the travel size petroleum jelly, I take a small tube of petroleum jelly lip balm in my 3-1-1 bag. In my last two trips to Italy (in May and in October) I have yet to use it up and it takes up so little room. A little goes a long way for lips, hands, elbows... TSA in Glasgow told me anything that could be poured/squeezed/spread must be within 3 oz and in the 3-1-1 bag -- bye-bye heather honey. To keep room in the 3-1-1 I use toothpaste tablets. Take them out of the bottle and put them in a Ziploc-esque bag and your carry-on weighs still less. I actually like them better than paste.
I thought chapstick counted as a non-solid. This is good to know. I have been putting things like that in too and in the UK I only have a ziplock bag to work with. 1 quart is a little bigger than our 1 litre allowance. It may not be a massive difference, but when you're trying to squeeze as many liquids as possible in, it makes a difference.
The one statement that should be included in every TSA Video. Empty your shirt and pants pockets, “before” you come to a Screening Checkpoint. “Everything” you normally carry in your shirt and pants pockets, should be placed inside your carry-on bag. Wallets, Keys, Coins, Ear-buds, Chapstick, Photo I.D.’s, Phones, Boarding Pass, and Passports, should be placed inside a carry-on bag. “Never” place anything you can hold in your hand, inside a screening bin. Fewer items placed in bins, means faster screening for everyone! You can put things back in your pockets after you leave the Screening Checkpoint!
you need to check the rules for the airport you are travelling from I purchased these plastic bags which had carry on approved but at Norwich airport uk all my tolitries were taken and i was given a sandwich size bag to put some in
I had that happen too, lost 4 items, and was handed a flat “real” quart sized bag to use at the UK’s Belfast Int. airport. Saw the same flat quart sized bags at London’s Stansted airport at security being handed out to people. The bag in the video is not quart sized. My original liquids bag was supposed to be TSA approved. To me it’s not worth the hassle. I’ll take my moisturizer, foundation, mascara, one or two other items and buy some cheap cleanser, shampoo etc when I get to my destination.
I left my liquid bag in Rome airport on the way home via London , but I didn’t get upset , it was nearly empty, my hack is take makeup that is almost empty so you can pitch and samples ! I took sample packets with moisture and face serums , took up no space for 12 days , I only did carry on too for Europe, and a very small personal bag
Haha nice tip on "share with a partner"! Luckily my partner is pretty chill, so I tend to toss the shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste; anything we'll both use in his, then use mine for the rest. I do perm my hair, so I'm a bit more picky with my "non-negotiable" liquids I call it, BUT I have been trying out some solid options as well so they'll become my go-to options for flying 🙂
@@conniekershaw4412 it closer to a liter size bag which is the standard for travel liquids bag outside the US. You can use a liter size zip lock bag if you want for your liquids. That’s what I used prior to this one.
I have so much more liquids in my travel bag. Mascara, lip gloss, nail polish, nail glue, liquid makeup, suntan lotion, shave oil, hair oil, body and hand lotion, etc... It's crazy! I use the Vaseline in a tube. I find it travels better.
One tip is rather than keep buying travel size items, refill the travel size containers. Of course that doesn't work if you are long term travelling where you wouldn't buy a large bottle of anything at one of your destinations, but for normal days to a couple weeks ttavel here and there it's cheaper and less wasteful.
I just throw in my liquids (perfume samples, makeup, mini hair products, etc) in my handbag and never take them out at customs and get through just fine every time.
Same. In the past, maybe 5 years, I have only been asked to separate liquids 2x. Both international flights out of an international specific terminal. Domestically they are more likely to yell at you to stop taking stuff out of bags because it slows down the lines. I stopped even trying to keep things in a specific bag and now just carry a zip lock quart bag to throw items into IF it comes up.
@@Lala-vx4os not sure why you are asking me that and not the original poster. I do follow the size limits as that still applies. I just don't put them in a special bag. And if you read the TSA guidelines it doesn't say anywhere anymore that you have to put them in a special bag. It just saya they need to fit in one. Most airports I go to don't WANT you to remove liquids because it slows down the lines. I have been YELLED at by TSA for attempting to remove my laptop and makeup bag before because I was slowing down the line and it wasn't necessary. Their current technology can see liquids just fine without them being in the bin. You have to remember that rule was started 16 years ago. Technology has improved a lot since then.
@@lizouimette I was curious as I assumed TSA required that the liquids/gels etc be separated from other other non liquid type toiletries and placed in a quart sized clear bag, so that is why I asked you. However you indicate that is not the case. Monika, she puts her liquids in her purse so it sounded to me like she was trying to get away with not putting the in a separate bag as well. In Canada, my understanding is that we are required to put our 10 ml or less liquids in a separate relatively small ziplock bag and have it at the ready to put in the bin; no separating items if needed or requested slowing down lines. It just makes sense to me if you pack that way in the first place, it's one less thing to be concerned with if security does indeed ask you to put your liquids in a quart bag. Speeds things up and no one gets yelled at. Different rules I guess.
@@Lala-vx4os I get that. I just travel too much to try to keep it all in one special bag. When everything is in the same bag that means I need a designated, easy to access space to keep that bag of liquids. Which usually means my small laptop bag so I don't have to unzip my hardcase carryon. Without the toiletry bag, I'm free to pack in the most efficient and space saving way possible and keep my laptop bag available for convenience items like chargers. Like I said, it's been YEARS since I've been asked to separate anything domestically. I used to follow those silly 1 bag rules but real life experience has taught me that it isn't worth the hassle anymore.
Hello. Wb Powder foundation and lipstick? Is it oki not to put these stuff in 311 bag???? Can i carry it randomly in my personal item bag? Btw Great explanation totally loved it . Hope you reply to me :>
You can actually have liquid in a larger than 3oz container, at least at some airports. They "tested" something I had that was a bigger than 3 oz container, and since they could see that it was an approved amount, they let me take it. They gave me the option to either throw it out or have it tested.

You didn't mention ml sizes
@thesuncollective1475 3.4oz is equivalent to 100ml
1quart is equivalent to 1 litre
Remember that not only foundation, but mascara, liquid eyeliner and concealer are also supposed to go in the 3-1-1 bag. I had to do a quick shuffle some years ago.
Yes that’s correct! Thanks for your tip. Sorry, did not mention because I mostly use powder based products and I keep my makeup pretty minimal!

Can I take sunscreen sick? And cleanser and cream in sachets??
I flew from Edinburgh airport in Scotland a few weeks ago, and my stuff got flagged by the machine for extra screening, because the machine got confused by my prescription meds in a second bag 😂
It was fine, they just needed to make sure my prescription matched my passport, but I've flown with the same medication for years, and this was the first time I ever had an issue.
yeah on the TSA website the guidelines definitely say creams and balms still count as a liquid.
oh wow i did not know this about prescription creams! i now feel so relieved about maintaining my acne routine while traveling :)
I recommend Ben's insect repellent wipes 30% (it worked in the Everglades).
It holds roughly one quart! Thanks for watching!
You are correct. That bag is not TSA approved.
@@awaytogether The dimensions given in the Amazon listing show that the volume of the smaller bag is 104 cubic inches A quart is 58 cubic inches.
I've done the ziploc with cotton rounds and micellar water too. Same with astringent. (For poison ivy).
not me takin my hat off fir the olaplex shampoo and conditioner...i felt that in my soul! Great tips, we appreciate ya!!
I travelled Denver to Italy with that sort of clear, zippered bag. No problem with TSA here or whatever they call it over there. I was super impressed with flying with carry on only for a week. They got me coming back because of the weight. It was all okay because I didn’t care if they lost it coming home.
Highly recommend trying bar shampoo and conditioner… the newer products are so nice and no need to put it in the liquids bag
Shampoo Bars! Shampoo and conditioner in solid form is perfect for carry on.
I did just bring sample size Clinique cream and cleansers.
me as well. I don't use a clear bag and have never had an issue.
Not me I had my contact solution, body powder, foundation all taken from me.
This WAS AWESOME!!!!. Thank you:). I love 💘 it. Just a little tip hack I learned for creams if only traveling for a week is to use contact containers 😊 they take up VERY little space. I tried it and have been very successful. Thank you again.
P
Awesome tip!!!! Thanks for watching!
That toiletry bag you are showing is much larger than the quart-size allowed by TSA. If that works, I'm thrilled, but doubt I would take the chance.
Warning - the exception for bigger size hand sanitizer has ended.
It’s great that you haven’t had a problem. But the bags you use/mention are too large. The medium is 1.8 quarts and the large is 3.3 quarts.
Just an FYI, last summer, I was on a domestic flight in the US, and the TSA took my makeup cleansing balm. I thought that was weird because it is more of a solid/waxy substance, but they insisted it was considered a liquid.
That is weird!!! Thanks for watching
I used a toiletry packing cube and didn't get flagged so I'm not so certain if the bag being clear or a quart is a thing anymore.
2 quick tips:
1-if you have TSA Pre-check then you don’t have to worry too much about where you put your liquid bag since you don’t usually have to take it out.
2-if you have small children with you, you can bring extra liquids: water, yogurt, milk, apple sauce, etc. I will just go through extra screening.
In Europe recently, they gave us a much smaller zip bag. Therefore, I did have to leave a few things behind
I travel for work and have had a lot of luck with packing my gel deodorant and makeup remover balm outside of my quart baggie. I also recommend micellar water wipes - I’ve had luck with tucking those in my personal item as well
Great tips!
From the TSA “As long as the toiletry bag is the approximate dimensions of a quart-sized bag (6″ x 9″), you’ll be good to go through the checkpoint.”
I found this article helpful: travelinglight.com/quart-size-bag/
@@awaytogether officially it is still too big as 6x9 is for a flat bag. Once you add the depth of this type bag they are easily 1.5 times the size actually allowed. That being said it will often depend on the people/countries/airports.
In our country we approach more as 10x100ml. So obviously that would require a larger bag. 🤷🏻♀️ It does get confusing at times.

I had two flights this week after not having flown for decades and I watched so many videos about the liquids bag and they didn’t want to see them either flight😮
I find it varies by airport. Some want it out, some don’t.
I think right now especially they are just trying to keep things moving.
Thank you for clarifying the 3-1-1 rule!
Have you ever tried a tooth powder in place of toothpaste? So much easier for travel. Just shake powder onto a damp toothbrush and brush away.
That suggestion took me back many decades when powder tooth cleaners were very common.
I've tried using those approved TSA liquids bags from Amazon and each time the security people told me to dump it out and put the contents into one of the plastic ziploc bags they provide. I grab a handful whenever we go thru security now.
That makes no sense since they say they are TSA approved. I would of called for a manager
In UK I had to buy a little bag also as I had a Ziplock with name on it.
@@Beebee192-j7i That's good to know! I can't remember having issues with staff being rude, just strict and sometimes run off their feet.
As far as toner, I’ve put several cotton pads in a zip lock and saturated them with toner so I didn’t have to bring a bottle.
Genius!
same for eye makeup remover :)
genius! Going to do that with my micellar water
AWESOME TIP!!!
I'm planning to do carry-on only for my next trip, and these tips were very helpful. Thanks!
Pressed tooth paste (or tabs) and make-up remover wipes...great too.
Great tips! And yeah things are a little unpredictable right now.
That is a big toiletries bag.!
I use Bella's Goat's Milk soap bar for face wash, body wash, and hair wash. That's my game-changer.
Also, I recommend acne patches that takes up literally no space and they work amazing.
I use shampoo bars too!
Yes!!! My last trip, I had wipes for everything! I need to find lotion wipes next because bar lotion didn't work for my skin.
I use solid toothpaste pellets, which is really great for travel. You can also get solid mouthwash.
I switched to Solid cologne to skirt the TSA liquids rule.
I didn’t know you can pack disposable razors in your carry on. I usually throw mine and larger bottles in my check bags. But that’s good for a future trip where I’m only taking a carry on.
Check out dry face wipes (you soak them) and night pimple patches.
Why not just use a quart sized Ziplock bag, put all you things in it, and then put them in the clear bag of your choice. Take the Ziplock in your personal bag in case you need to transfer things back. I got global entry because most of our travels are outside the US.
Im at a loss to understand why they’re just so strict with liquids on a flight, really doesnt make sense to me
That's because you are not a terrorist and have no bad intentions
Thank you thank you for this video!! Super helpful!!! Happy travels 😊
Being a man who shaves his head my entire liquid bag is a small sample toothpaste and 100ml bottle of hand sanitizer, and liquid bug spray. All of which can be found at my destination. I’ve considered taking ZERO liquids and pastes just to confuse the tsa agents but I feel like not having ANY liquids to show them would make them suspicious enough to double check me 😂
500 Chapsticks! Me too!! Lol! Thanks for all of these amazing tips!!
Just flew from Myrtle Beach. TSA did not want me to take my clear liquids bag out of my carry on bag. They actually said don’t take anything out at all. Also flying from Stewart International I was not required to take belt off. I guess rules are changing everyday.
Yes! There's so much inconsistency.
I think it’s been so long since they’ve seen this level of traffic that they’re just trying to keep it moving. 🤷🏻♀️ Who knows. Thanks for watching!
Many of the machines have been upgraded so you don’t have to remove as many items in some airports.
Moisturizer stick for the face… that is brilliant! Great tips!
That bag looks way bigger than a quart.
Thanks so much for the great vid! I've watched it twice, taking notes, since we haven't traveled by plane in a long while.
If it helps, the bigger bag is 9.6x6.5 inches. A quart is normal 7x8 and they are okay if it's "about" a quart... So the bigger bag is definitely okay. It's just shorter in height and longer in length!
Picking solids over liquids is smart. How have I gone all this time without thinking of it? 😂
It blew my mind when I first discovered it 🤯
This video was so helpful. Thank you!
Heathrow and Madrid would not allow the zip bag. Ask me how I know. TSA is a breeze compared with some European airports.
I am flying through Heathrow in 3 weeks. What size zip bag did they not allow?
I had a container of goat cheese as I headed through the checkpoint. I showed it to the agent. He said ok.
I really needed this in-depth video. Thank you.
I'm sorry but the sad music for the olaplex made me laugh 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
It's a bit trickier for those of us who wear makeup. Mascara, foundation and concealer goes in there too. And I have yet to find a solid sunscreen that I actually like that's not a greasy mess.
You’re right! I keep my makeup pretty minimal but most of what I use in that dept is powder-based as well. Thanks for watching.
Put your foundation and concealer in a contacts lens container
Same!
My bag did not get thru. I had to leave stuff. That toiletrie bag is big for what we have to use at the airport.
We’ve had that happen as well. The key is to be ready to adapt! I’d say Germany was the most strict.
That happens to us from YLW Kelowna too. I just gave up and started grabbing a few of the airport liquids bags every time I go thru security now.
Amen 🙏 to that .. God bless you Grandma
Thank you for the dry shampoo powder idea!!!
A liter is actually 1.06 quarts-one of the few things I remember from high school chemistry class! 🤓
@@CaitlinConCuore no, 1l = 0.879 quarts or 1 quart = 1.13 l
@@dawnriddler Ah, I was speaking for US quarts-you must be speaking of UK! I didn’t realize there was a difference!
Thanks for this useful information!
You can put things back in your pockets after you leave the Screening Checkpoint!
you need to check the rules for the airport you are travelling from I purchased these plastic bags which had carry on approved but at Norwich airport uk all my tolitries were taken and i was given a sandwich size bag to put some in
Yep - flexibility is key
I had that happen too, lost 4 items, and was handed a flat “real” quart sized bag to use at the UK’s Belfast Int. airport. Saw the same flat quart sized bags at London’s Stansted airport at security being handed out to people. The bag in the video is not quart sized. My original liquids bag was supposed to be TSA approved. To me it’s not worth the hassle. I’ll take my moisturizer, foundation, mascara, one or two other items and buy some cheap cleanser, shampoo etc when I get to my destination.
thats such a smart idea to bring solids if possible.
Good shit Sis! You are awesome. Downloading this video for future reference
I am a pro at tetrising things and the 3-1-1 rule even stresses me out...
Could you do a video on your makeup bag? Would love more suggestions on non liquid products
Sounds like a great plan! Thanks for watching
There is no way that toiletry bag is only one quart
It’s TSA approved and I’ve been traveling internationally with it for over a year. No issues.
I was thinking the same thing. It's way bigger than a quarter size ziplock bag😅
@@conniekershaw4412 it closer to a liter size bag which is the standard for travel liquids bag outside the US. You can use a liter size zip lock bag if you want for your liquids. That’s what I used prior to this one.
@@Joy-mm3cz Thank you. That's very useful knowledge for overseas travel. I really do appreciate this.
she has bigger. my quart bag is literally smaller than that.
Your bag looks WAY bigger than a quart size bag.
@@lizouimette why don't you just follow the rules?
Great video. You explained the 3-1-1 very well. It’s funny though only US cares about these things but not other countries.

You can actually have liquid in a larger than 3oz container, at least at some airports. They "tested" something I had that was a bigger than 3 oz container, and since they could see that it was an approved amount, they let me take it. They gave me the option to either throw it out or have it tested.
