My favorite has always been Bette Davis since she’s also from Massachusetts and wasn’t afraid to portray unlikeable roles which made me her more different than others of her time. I also really love Ingrid Bergman, I read they told her to lose weight and Fix her teeth and she refused, she was way ahead of her time ❤

I think Vivien Leigh deserved a mention. She was a terrific actress from old Hollywood.
Maybe that's because Vivien wasn't primarily a "Hollywood actress"? She made only 20 films, and of those only five were made in Hollywood.

Especially since this was clearly more a beauty, style and sophistication contest as opposed to acting! Vivien was a true beauty who cut her teeth on the British stage and made what some consider a difficult transition to American film. Her body of work is phenomenal if you can get past her beauty. Also, Oscar winning actress Hattie McDaniel, one of her cast members in GWTW, should have been considered!

Again...Vivien Leigh being left out, not even in honorable mentions really bothers me. She won Oscars twice in leading roles completely in contrast in different decades, often regarded as one of the most beautiful actresses ever (back then the beauty was surely the status in Hollywood), won the role of Scarlett O'Hara (arguably one of the most famous female characters in one of the most prominent Hollywood films ever, which even Katharine Hepburn was desperate to take), and went through a pretty dramatic life till her death. I would put her in the top 5. How she's been underappreciated now is a shame.
I agree here. She’s one of my fav classic Hollywood actresses and very talented. I know she was only in a few movies and acted on the stage a lot, but she deserves to be on this list.

She was bipolar, I'm not surprised she didn't make any lists. It's these innocuous things, the funny lists on the internet, a book written by someone, etc, that effectively erases or changes the history of a person.
Fun fact: Katherine Hepburn is the ONLY actor to have 4 Oscars for LEADING roles!!! What a legend!!!

It may be sacrilegious but I think she was way overrated. She had a persona but little versatility. Give me Bette Davis any day who was not the same in every role.

Ingrid Bergman had such a distinct personality and gave 110% in every role she had. It's just a shame that her role in _Casablanca,_ while rightfully universally praised, tends to overshadow all the others.
She had a very unconventional life for the time. She left her children with their fathers to pursue her career. Yet, none of them seem to have resented her for it.

Agreed x 10! I loved her in Spellbound with Gregory Peck, Under Capricorn with Joseph Cotton and so many others like Gaslight and Joan of Arc. Who can forget her portrayal of Golda Meir in "A Woman Called Golda?'

I asked on a comment if she was here, you told me she is not, I was sure about it ! She was among the 3 best at least, she influnced so many great actresses who came later. She was so versatile, and could embody her roles like no one else. People just have a naive and outdated image of that era, they don't look at the actresses'performances, but they check if theire image fit their idea about "glamour". Stanwyck was very charming and classy, but she was beyond fashion and labels, she never played the game in Hollywood, that's way you can find a bit of her in today down-to-earth actresses like Susan Sarandon or Laure Dern who praises her.
There are a few here that you could do a part 2 on or even a top 20 for this list: Debbie Reynolds, Kim Novak, Cyd Charise, Ann Miller, Loretta Young, Vivien Leigh, Olivia de Havilland, Ginger Rogers, Lucille Ball, Ann Sheridan, Kathryn Grayson, Esther Williams, Joan Fontaine, Barbara Stanwyck, Rosiland Russell, Claudette Colbert and Margaret Sullivan.

Absolutely you nailed it! All of these actresses deserved a place on the list. Any one of them could have been top ten. This list by Mojo should have been at least a top 30 with a slew of honorable mentions.

Audrey Hepburn was an icon, and she always shined in every role. Sadly, her waifish figure was an a result of being starved during the war, suffering from lifelong complications, namely anaemia and multiple miscarriages. Although she died of stomach cancer at only 63 years old, her legacy and style still linger on.
I know she went through war and starvation, but how do you know she suffered from amenia and multiple miscarriages?

I love Ingrid Bergman. Notorious in particular is one of my favorite classic films.
It's Gaslight & Spellbound for me. She was simply one of the most stunningly beautiful women I've ever seen.

Kim Novak? She was luminous in her roles. I especially loved her in Bell, Book and Candle!
"Mildred Pierce" is my favorite Joan Crawford film. I've watched it a lot.
I'm confused that noone mentioned Doris Day. She may never won an Oscar but she was the bestselling female Star at the boxoffice in her time.
Where's Barbara Stanwyck? She was arguably the best actress of classic Hollywood and didn't even earn a honorable mention in the list. Besides being a versatile actress who shined in genres like melodrama, comedy, western and noir, her performances still feel natural today (which can't be said about some of her peers). Do better, MsMojo.
Completely agree! She is often left out of things like this, but she was present in so many decades of film and television. She had such an impact on so many future actors and took her craft to the next level. What is your favorite of her films of you can pick one?
@@Nicole-wj7yq Yeah, she deserved more recognition. As for favorite film, I would probably go with "Double Indemnity", but I really enjoy her performances in "The Lady Eve", "Remember the Night" and "Ball of Fire". Also worth a mention is her opening scene in "The Miracle Woman".

They're top 20 material, but not top 10 material. Gene Tierney, Norma Shearer and Hedy Lamarr would also be in the top 20, I think.

It's always good to see my favourite actress on a first place in such a list.
Marilyn Monroe was very talented and I saw her in The Seven Year Itch and she was good in that movie. I was going to watch Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, but it was removed from UA-cam. It's sad that she had a traumatic childhood and Andrew Dominick and Joyce Carol Oates exploited her to spread lies about her. Hopefully, there's a UA-camr who's making a miniseries about her exploring the unknown side of her and it's successful.
Seconded, poor Marilyn, she had such a tragic life, despite her success, and seemed destined for greater pursuits.

11:30. Katharine Hepburn is TIMELESS!! Perfect choice for #1. She was stunning in 1981 at age 74 in the movie " On Golden Pond."
Judy Garland is a legendary actor. It’s honestly sad she will more than likely be forgotten in the next 100 years because her life was tragically cut short and didn’t get to live out a long career.
I don't think that she will be forgotten because her fans will never let her be forgotten ever.

When you get to the honorable mentions you realize how impossible making a list like this really is.
I know there are plenty of comments with names the likes of Garbo, Myrna Loy, Jean Arthur, Barbara Stanwyck, (all faves of mine) etc etc etc. But the actresses they chose are all fabulous access points for newcomers to classic film. Watching their most iconic films would expose a newcomer to a slew of essential leading men, directors, genres, archetypes, etc. Aside from silent films, the actresses they chose really do represent the 30s to the mid-60s fabulously. I think most classic film fans were welcomed into the fold by one of these 10 ladies. Personally, being introduced to Audrey Hepburn first and subsequently her leading men and then her leading men's other films eventually lead me to discover the likes of Loy, Stanwyck, and Garbo.
I noticed you didn’t mention Anna May Wong the first Asian Actress that paved the way for Lucy Liu and Michelle Yeoh to both become award winning actress in their own rights

Her body of work isn't very large and she mostly played supporting roles so you could mostly get just a glimpse of her talent

Marilyn and Liz should've been higher up the list. Liz has an amazing body of work and Marilyn despite being purposely reduced to 1-2 dimensional characters brought every single one to life like only she could. So tired of people dismissing her talent just because her roles were mostly comedic. Her and Audrey are the biggest gateway into old Hollywood. Lucille Ball and Judy are also massively underrated.
No one dismiss Marilyn's talent, see she is on the list, for my part I think she is overrrated now, they gave her her chance to play drama, she was average in the Misfits and The River of No Return, and in comedies, she always played the same kind of dumb blonde, Kim Novak was better in that kind of roles, and Shirley McLaine, even Jane Russel, no one never talks about Jabe Russel, although she could play dramas.
Susan Hayward and Ingrid Bergman was my absolute favorite. Also Gene Tierney was excellent.

Audrey and Elizabeth were the very epitome of endless beauty! I'm disappointed that Olivia deHavilland was not on the list. However, I think Katherine and Kate Mulgrew are quite similar in looks and voice.

I think Natalie Wood should have been on this list. She was one of the most beautiful and talented actresses to grace the silver screen.

OMG two of the greatest performances on film are Scarlett O'Hara and Blanche DuBois, not to mention the other roles played by the incomparable and two time Oscar winner Vivien Leigh and you left her out of your top ten. She should be in the top five.

Also, as an honorable mention, how about Shirley Temple? She topped the box office during the Depression and hosted a favorite TV show as an adult. (She was also highly regarded as the US Ambassador to Ghana & briefly Czechoslovakia).
The only actress on here that is as fine as Lana Turner is Marylyn and the omission is Dorothy Dandridge

A magnificent list of great actresses, today’s crop just don’t give off the same glow. While I don’t necessarily agree with the order , all listed definitely belong there. Also, the biographies read out were respectful to their talents without focusing on the tragic events in their lives 🙏🏼👏💝

I'm guessing from this era of Hollywood that only Lucille Ball and Judy Garland will be remembered in 100 years from now. Monroe might last longer than most in our memories but fade away though as not many even knows what movies she was in now, just know her face.
