  • Craig & Carmine use examples from their own PC to explain what card qualities they deem to be investible.
They explain the factors they believe allow cards to, like a 401(k), increase in financial and nostalgic value along with factors that are value breakers for the future.

Awesome idea for an episode! I have a few cards that are in my Phelps PC that I think of as investible base on a few things. I have the 2013 Upper Deck Employee Exclusive PMG /125 such and iconic card parallel as well as it being rare to see. Another card I won a few days ago is a Duel auto 1/1 of Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte, Is from a new Leaf set but its rare and the card is gold so it pares nice with them getting gold medals at the Olympics. When I think back to watching them both in the Olympics it adds an attachment more to the card!

Yup I know the exact on you're talking about. Given Phelps cards are limited as is and everyone knows that purple PMG set, I'd say that one will definitely stand the test of time

You both already know my philosophy, but for the CC community, my main card investment (outside of “all paths lead to LeBron”) is my 2011 Topps American Pie Taylor Swift RC, but the Spotlight Foil variant that is SN’d to just 76 copies.
It’s not just her only licensed card, but she only has one serialized card with just 76 copies in existence. And with just 9 graded copies in PSA pop, it’s truly rare and scarce. One just sold on auction for $6.2K.
She continues to destroy music records, is currently the #1 streamed musician in the world, and her relationship with Kelce should continue to cross-pollinate sports card fans with music fans.
I look at this long-term hold as a “blue chip stock”. Let me know your thoughts!

Also, 76 serialized copies in existence vs. 284M IG followers just seems like a great investment when you consider supply vs demand.
Especially when you look at how many serialized copies of cards people athletes have today compared to their social media reach (ex: Trevor Lawrence has 1m followers but thousands of 1/1’s.)

I’m looking at certain Brady rookie cards, with this same approach.

Love it . Brady must be a tough one since he's got 20 years of cards. Which were you thinking?

Early 2000’s HOF football chrome refractors and on card auto rookie cards with serial numbers or short printed from that time period I expect will be highly sought after in the mid 2050’s. This is what I’m counting on. If it doesn’t work out I promise I’ll have no regrets.

Agree with this - especially when you consider there weren't a bunch of meaningless overproduced parallels like there are today

Craig hit the bullseye on the paradox of value and investment in cards. The most valuable cards are the ones that people want to own and never sell 🤔

Brett @stackingslabs and I started to break down the case on his podcast that set collecting is a powerful force for escalations in values.

It's a great point. And when you consider ultra modern cards are constantly being sold and flipped, it goes to show that most of the new stuff is not really investable long term

Its interesting/cool that your examples don't follow one "type" of card. They all had differing qualities; patches, autos, serial numbers, even base. They all can hold long term value depending on the player and the CTCR. It seems like word "first" is a very important theme for investibility. Can we expect some italian card show vlogs? A little collisione di culturale?

I agree with this one! As far as Mahomes cards are concerned, that's as safe as an investment as it gets
