BobCat623923 Thank you. He absolutely was. What the fuck was the Academy *THINKING* when they failed to even *NOMINATE* his performance in this film? Michael Keaton delivered one of the best acting performances of 1988.
This is one of the best movies I've ever seen. I've seen it about 4 times, and I'm about to watch it again. If I were a man, I'd want to be Michael Keaton.
When he said breezy, I think he might have meant Mr. Mom (83), Johnny Dangerously (84), Gung Ho (86). Just a guess. Night Shift was and still is one of the funniest movies I ever seen. Keaton: So what do we do, drive around and pick up stiffs? Winkler: Not exactly. If you haven't watched Night Shift (82), I highly recommend it!
there's no way michael keaton did this movie without consulting a real addict. his performance was too good. this movie really showed the way real addicts think and act
For me, this is Keaton's best role. I remember when the film came out and I watch it every so often just to keep things in perspective. The irony of for me is that I was actually introduced to this film in the late 80s by a woman who was in CA, who was trying to get me to stop, and who was for the most part, the splitting-image of "Charlie." I did stop everything, but cigarettes, and regardless that this woman knew how I felt about her, we were never intimate but i did become a big brother to her son and spent many a night on her couch. I watched this film the other night, and as always--was moved by everyone's perfomance. Huge kudos to Morgon Freeman as well, and I found this clip of Keaton's speech to the AA group and sent it to a couple of friends explaining how I came about watching this film and what it meant to me. Consequently, I was curious, and I did a search for this particular woman, who, really, in the end, saved me from myself--and I found her obituary. She passed away too young at the age of 55. She was happily married, and had had two more children by her husband. Such a loss-- Now this film means more to me than it ever has.
@jemimakahn I agree Keaton is underrated. But Norton and DiCaprio are great actors themselves.Keaton certainly is more versatile though, the other two can't do comedy.
Michael Keaton is amazing in this film. my only problem is that the romance in the 2 half of the film is boring and detracts from the rest of the film.
Yes, he knew the stories. When he mentioned it in his journal and then again in Life Itself, I was amazed that he made it for so long. Again, another hero.
@SURFUR Nah, I think Keaton was awesome as Bruce Wayne/Batman, too. He did a lot with very little. With roles like Batman and this movie, Keaton shows that a character can be dramatic without being boring!
Michael Keaton was robbed of an Oscar nomination for Best Actor for this film, and for Best Supporting Actor for *BEETLEJUICE.* Fun fact: Both Kathy Baker (whatever happened to her, anyway?) AND Morgan Freeman did the decent *STREET SMART* the year before, in 1987.
I watched "Clean And Sober" this afternoon, and Keaton's performance as addicted real estate broker Daryl Poynter remains one of the most powerful of his career, as well as one of his lesser known efforts in his oeuvre. It's a low down dirty crying shame Keaton was ignored by the stodgy old coots in the Academy prior to Oscar time.
This ranks up with "The best of Keaton." This, "Beetlejuice" and Ken in "Toy Story 3." One of the roles he should be remembered for when he leaves this Earth. I loved his "Batman" movies, but his "Batman"... not as much. Wasn't his fault--they gave him so little to do. He's more talent than most consider. In the late '80's and early '90's, this man was on top of the world. He needs a comeback role--deserves it. Keaton. Is. Magic. --For "Beetlejuice' Himself, Dane Youssef
It was hard to care for this movie. When the time comes for you to quit, a number of things help you stop permanently. For me it was knowing the doctor wanted me to stay in his hospital bed so he could scam medicare or whatever, for more bucks. In the movie Keaton wanted to cheat his mother out of her own home .. to me that's the basis for a better movie; Why is it so bleeding hard to move? Why are places to live so rare? i stopped being wino cold turkey- no sweats nothing because there are too many other threats to staying alive now. Including being blamed for crimes you didn't do- by real substance abusers.
So did they give it Two Thumbs Up or Down or what ? They never gave their classic Two or One Thumbs Up routine. I guess we may never know if there was a voted Thumbs Up or Down or what.... They skipped all that shit apparently.
At this point in the show's era, they didn't mention it completely until the end of the show. Later on, they decided to do it earlier so idiots could get the message right away. But you can't tell from this whether or not they liked it?
Keaton was robbed of an Oscar nomination for his performance in this.
I understand what you mean, though the film's worth more than that.
I absolutely agree with this. This is the film that proved Keaton had dramatic chops.
BobCat623923 Thank you. He absolutely was. What the fuck was the Academy *THINKING* when they failed to even *NOMINATE* his performance in this film? Michael Keaton delivered one of the best acting performances of 1988.
Great Movie
Well, did they press for one for him?
Perhaps the funniest line I ever heard Ebert speak. "Sid and Nancy never quite got to the rehab clinic."
Funny in what way?
Depends on how you look at it.
Great movie to someone trying to fight addiction. Really hits the heart
As someone addicted to alcohol, Micheal Keatons performance was actually kinda realistic to what I go through as an addict.
Same here. He should have gotten an Oscar for his performance.
This is one of the best movies I've ever seen. I've seen it about 4 times, and I'm about to watch it again. If I were a man, I'd want to be Michael Keaton.
I really like Micheal Keaton haven't seen this movie looks good

Jason Eyler I saw it years ago and loved it.
Night Shift is an absolute classic!!
@@BobCat623923 yes it is
Now these two could critique a Movie - May they R.I.P :) QC
"SId and Nancy never quite got to the rehab clinic"...that's classic...
Morgan Freeman was so much more interesting before he became America's official mascot.
What?

Credit screenwriter Tod Carroll for writing such a realistic screenplay--which I have no doubt was written from firsthand experience.

Why did you cross out the last line?
this should have been required viewing for all those people protesting Michael Keaton as Batman.
This literally came out right before he did Batman
Better yet, they should see how solid he was in his BATMAN films.
0:41 - 1:14 Makes you think about Morgan’s movie , Lean on Me, as well.
He did that after this.
what's up with the disfigurement I feel like I'm tripping on shrooms
They gave it two thumbs up. I know that Ebert gave it 3.5 stars.
Micheal Keaton not getting an Oscar, or at least a nomination for this movie is tragic.
Amen!
One of his best roles...well suited for character...sure he helped a lot of deranged alchies...whole cast, & crew top notch 🎭🖼
The way Siskel says "pimp" at 1:47 cracks me up for whatever reason.
I want to see this.
One of my favorite films
I saw this at our 2nd run aud in my college. I was blown away by Kathy Baker (I loved Picket Fences).
You can read Roger's review of this on his site.
This film got Keaton the role of Bruce Wayne in Batman
Keaton should have been nominated and WON the Best Actor Oscar for this film.
Absolutely!
Best treatment of subject ...period 🥰🙂🙃
M Emmet Walsh was very very Good
@drlee2 Nominated, yes. But that was the year of Rain Man.
@jemimakahn I agree Keaton is underrated. But Norton and DiCaprio are great actors themselves.Keaton certainly is more versatile though, the other two can't do comedy.
How do you figure they can't do comedy?
Great performance by Micheal Keaton. Confirmed for me his position as a great actor.
Michael Keaton is amazing in this film. my only problem is that the romance in the 2 half of the film is boring and detracts from the rest of the film.
3:25 - :31Small point: I disagree with that. They're both good.
Great performance by all! Keaton was AWESOME!!! No one should ever give this a THUMBS DOWN. I own this on DVD.
You and me both! I watched it this afternoon!
Ebert himself was a sober alcoholic. I respect how he kept his own issues close to the vest, but it must have informed his appreciation for the film.
Yes, he knew the stories. When he mentioned it in his journal and then again in Life Itself, I was amazed that he made it for so long. Again, another hero.
Very underrated movie
I couldn't agree with you more!
Clean & sober is great for an hour then it turns into a romcom with random girl from the rehab
I think you missed what the movie was trying to say…
@SURFUR Nah, I think Keaton was awesome as Bruce Wayne/Batman, too. He did a lot with very little. With roles like Batman and this movie, Keaton shows that a character can be dramatic without being boring!
I don't know what the dislikes are about?
Roger actually liked the Morning After.
In the late 80’s, early 90’s there were so many “double movies” probably where Fox News got the idea of a counter news show.
Michael Keaton was robbed of an Oscar nomination for Best Actor for this film, and for Best Supporting Actor for *BEETLEJUICE.*
Fun fact: Both Kathy Baker (whatever happened to her, anyway?) AND Morgan Freeman did the decent *STREET SMART* the year before, in 1987.
Roger mentioned your fun fact in his print review. As for his Best Actor nod, I wonder if they pushed for it.
She won several Emmys on Picket Fences

Hate to break it to you, but most people view Michael Keaton as the definitive Batman actor even all these years later
A lot of this was filmed a few miles from where I live,I forgot all about
3:30 Not as well 'is right.' Keaton goes through much 'bigger' drama than Fox went through.
Know for his "breezy" roles? What the hell is that?
@ZarahLean Thanks.
2:57 Is Ebert turning into a zebra?

Seems like something even Martin Scorsese would be into. Even Oliver Stone.

Hard disagree there. Keaton was perfect in this.

Ebert had substance issues so it makes sense he would like this movie, even if it wasn't as good.
Alex Ewing, Oh STFU.
Ebert was never clean and sober. He wrote smut. And his colostomy bag is so dirty even his fanboys won't lick it
Ebert was a drunk but now is fed from a drip
Kyle Wilson And you're dead, too, but unlike with R.E., nobody gives a flying fuck about you.
