  • This presentation explains how I built a half hull model of the Wm. Fife designed cutter 'Minerva" (circa 1888). The model was build from a set of plans I purchased from The Wooden Boat Store in Brooklin Maine. I used local wood to build her..the hull is B.C. Douglas Fir and the waterline is Western Red Cedar. The backboard is a hefty piece of curly Sepele.

One of the early owners of this boat henry bucknall owned my house a gold coast estate on Long Island he was commodore of larchmont yacht club. Nathaniel herreschoffs son francis lewis once commented minerva was the prettiest thing hed ever seen. There are many mid 1890s new york times articles with timed races mentioning the minervas superb performance, and bucknall. The boat was sold to henry w j bucknall somewhere between 1893-1894 which after he skippered in regattas and long distance races with overnight stays through Long Island sound into the foreseeable future. I am still researching

Thanks for the video. How do you get the rail lift to the correct shape so that it fits when bent to the sheer?

Hi CAAHACKY, yup the rail lift is or can be a bit tricky but depending on the model there are many ways to tackle it, but here's a few I recommend.
After the sheer has been cut, shaped, and sanded.. the 1st method involves shaping the lift rails as required by the plan view, then soaking overnight or steaming until it's easily pliable then dry fit for drying overnight...clamping with multiple rounds of tape or surgical tubing or using frogs (weights). When dry, the final shaping is much easier. Glue up requires all non-mating surfaces to be masked off and using the same method of clamping or pins which are countersunk after the glue sets.
2nd method is vacuum bagging the rail lift in place after the soaking / steaming process is complete. This involves putting the model or part of the model in a plastic bag and removing the air with a vacuum pump while the glue sets...there's lots of info online regarding this procedure....and it's fun to do! Glad you liked the lil movie and hope this helps..
