omg I just did this! :) Who knew working with mud and stone could be so much fun. I used a #6 carbon steel grate, and as I approached 800c it sagged, alot. I was hoping to get up over 2000f. Ill try and come back with some pictures. I did manage to get some vitrification of my pottery regardless. Im working on a clay grate this time. I think with forced air and charcoal I might be able to hit cone 5 and get my ash glaze to melt. I am also GenX. When I was young, we played with mud. Because thats what we had! lol Best wishes.

I had some bricks self destruct(water/steam).Not dry enough.. They sintered, turned red and are no longer clay, but they break easy. Its the temperature. We need charcoal to burn hot enough to completely vitrify a brick. Good news is, all we need is mud wood and fire to construct a charcoal factory.

😂 I can remember as a very young kid my mom getting upset with me because every time I went outside I'd run right to my "mud pile" I was dead set on being Laura Engles and building a house like I saw on Little House on the Prairie 😂 at last I'm an adult and by God's I'm going to build my cottage. No mom to stop me now lol 😂

I see "Gen X", I click like. The top needs to be more air tight to keep more heat, the clay needs to look like lava colour when baking. The hole to transfer the eat from under is too small. It works better with coal. After few adjustments you will succeed for sure.
