Why Vito Corleone Didn't Give Fredo Corleone His Own Regime?

  • In The Godfather, Vito Corleone gives his son, Fredo, A secondary role instead of giving him his own Regime. This decision ultimately leads to Fredo's alienation. Why did Don Corleone choose to give Fredo this responsibility?

The one thing that stands out to me about the depiction of Fredo is that Fredo's stupidity was never played for laughs.
A lot of other films would have used Fredo's weaknesses as a source of cheap laughs. But there was nothing funny about Fredo's stupidity. He was depicted as a tragic figure who was doomed to fail and his ineptitude had deadly consequences for his family as well as Fredo himself.

It's not clear that he was stupid. I think "simple" is a better description. Because he seemed to lack cunning, but not necessarily intelligence. He was too trusting (IIRC he didn't actually know there would be a hit on Michael, but he probably shared information about which room was Michaels, or who the guard at the gate was (so that person could be recruited / bribed / threatened their family, etc.)

@@radicalross7700 I think there is an element where, when you go back in literature to the greatest assassination tale ever, Julius Ceasar, it is Cassius's "lean and hungry look" that is used to describe ambition and cunning. Fredo was the equivalent of an average person trying to play gangster. He acted like any of us would act if we tried to fit in with a criminal organization that we didn't really belong to or made for. Fredo lacked mentorship from Vito because Sonny was the obvious heir apparent. Sonny being such a hot head meant Vito had to dedicate more time with him over Fredo. Unlike Michael, Fredo never sought independence and relied on whatever he picked up from being around his father and older brother.

    • @spidey1z
      @spidey1z 2 роки тому +14

I think there’s a point made that most people miss. Fredo almost died as a infant, which probably stunted his growth as child. With Don Vito as his father and hot headed Sonny as his brother, Fredo probably was never bullied or disciplined at school. These two factors almost certainly left Fredo in an arrested development. Sonny was to the heir to the Don and Michael was envisioned as high ranking political figure by Vito. Fredo was to be looked after by the two. Unfortunately Sonny’s temper led to his downfall, which leads to Fred being skipped. Fredo, who probably never realized he was not considered highly of, didn’t know Vegas was an errand boy’s job. As a result, he was quite upset about being passed over and probably should’ve asked Vito, “Why?”.

Winning was the only option for him, losing means that his Marines die. Everything that happened in WW2 more than prepared him to take over from his father.
Fredo couldn’t even hold onto his pistol and fire off a shot, when Vito was getting hit. Fredo couldn’t even “read the environment”, like Vito did, before the shooters went after his dad. A BOSS needs to be able to quickly and accurately size up a situation. ( remember the incident in Havana with the rebel) Michael immediately knew that the Cuba deal was wrong. He wasn't lying; he was lashing out because he became upset when Michael said "Haven't I always taken care of you?". He was trying to get respect from Michael and, in general, from the world. The dynamic is so powerful: Michael, the younger brother, had surpassed Fredo, the older brother, to become the head of the family. This was the ultimate emasculation for Fredo in a life that was full of them (Moe Greene smacking him around for banging the cocktail waitresses, getting sent to the airport like a chauffer to pick people up, etc.). @lordbiscuitthetossable5352 Рік тому +8

I think that's the hammer that dropped, not only had he betrayed Michael, but he was also incapable of self-reflection. The main reason no one really trusted him was that he wasn't able to read other people and got off every minor power trip that came his way. Furthermore, his empathy or self-awareness just wasn't there. He had been involved in a plan that could've had his brother killed, yet here he was rolling on his back talking about how he was stepped over and ignored and didn't really try to prostrate himself over what *he* did to Michael. It just meant that as long as he was alive the same mistake could've been exploited over and over again and that unlike either of his brothers, he was never meant for the family business. Though Michael was certainly going to exile him, I felt that from that point onward, Fredo's death was inevitable, or more so.
Credit to the actor though. He really brought Fredo to life.

I think it's a good point. Fredo may have still been able to extricate himself from getting whacked at that point if he had shown some capacity to acknowledge his shortcomings and agree to the limitations he was put under. Instead he kept lamenting getting passed over by Vito and his frustrations. He refused to come to terms with who he was which meant very likely more strife and risk for Michael and the family in the future.
Perhaps even more tragic he may have indeed been fully beaten at that point. Terrified and broken by everything and forever a basket case adult child that would just do things like fish with the grandkids for the rest of his life. But because he lamented his fate so openly and didn't display that understanding (if he had it) he only contributed to the fear that he would cause trouble again someday and thus the prudent move was to whack him.

In Godfather 2 we are shown a snapshot of each son’s temperament, foreshadowing the men they will become. Sonny being highly strung, Fredo being weak physically/mentally & Michael being quiet, thoughtful & level headed. The Godfather knew Michael was really the only one capable of running the family which made him protective of Michael, not to mentor him but to stop him from being involved in crime. He didn’t want the only son with strong capabilities & bright future to end up being a crime boss. In the Godfather’s eyes Michael was better & more deserving of greater things. He probably envisaged him being the president one day or at least someone in a respectable & legal leadership role, not a crime Lord.

If he was Don in Micheal's era espcially the other families would've torn the corelone family to shreds, unless Micheal as underboss stepped in as the real leader during the chaotic situations. Everyone would know Fredo is only don because he is the oldest, Micheal would be the real don, and Fredo would be even more envious than he was while being underboss, except due to the responsibility of being don he wouldn't have betrayed Micheal. He would sit with the pain or kill himself, but he wouldn't have betrayed Micheal, due to fear of the consequences.
More interestingly I think the family would've been stronger because they would've seen the cost of bad leadership in Fredo being don. The family in Micheal's era was very soft and couldn't see why Micheal had to rule in the manner he did, Fredo putting the entire family empire in complete danger would've made everyone more obedient to Micheal. Sonny I think had provided the family strength and the past and his lack of presence really had an impact. Even Micheal said he wished he had a robust 2nd man.
This is why I maintain Micheal was the best don because despite all of the major setbacks he had to deal with including an era that was more ruthless he still almost got the entire family out of the mob life, which is something I cannot imagine Vito being able to do.

There's a saying in that life when you have shown your worth and been marked as an equal and to be respected, they say, _"Make your Bones."_
Many people think this always involves killing someone, but that isn't the case. You can make your bones in any situation where things could go very wrong if you fall apart, but you keep your cool, stay steady you can get through it.
When Don Vito was attacked Fredo froze, he fumbled, then he crumbled showing he didn't have what it takes to lead that life. He failed to make his bones. He proved himself unworthy not to be trusted in a crush.
They sent him away to get him away from where they thought any danger was involved, where he could have a job that involved dressing flashy and acting the big shot. If he wound up actually being any good at anything or not would just be icing on the cake.

The reason he was stepped over was simply thet Fredo was not really cut out for the business...let alone being boss. Vito knew this, and he was not going to put his son in a place where he knew he was going to fail. Especially in a place where the stakes are so high and death was a real possibility. And he was right. This doesn't mean Vito loved Fredo any less than his other sons; but it meant he shouldn't be part of this life. So, Vito found a way to use Fredo in a way he could help and he felt good about it. Michael ,however, did not have the same finesse that Vito had; which lead to him being manipulated by Roth. All Fredo wanted was the respect from Michael, that Vito refused him, he was a Mama's boy, who craved attention and the approval of those his Father and Brothers.

I understand why (emotionally) killing fredo was bad for michael, but i always thought it was the right choice to kill fredo. He betrayed his family twice, and at least once knowingly. He understood the life they were in.

Fratricide is a terrible betrayal of one's own family. When Michael killed Fredo he killed a huge part of himself. He was a haunted man afterwards.

From day 1, Fredo was not cut out for that life.
As soon as Don Veto passed, Michael should have sent him far away cut off from all family business.

But...there is a line of dialog in Part II referring to Fredo's men, implying that he at least had a few guys under him, maybe only bodyguards, not a regime. However, in the huge congressional investigation's chart which lists all known members of the family, Fredo is listed as underboss, meaning he probably would have men under him out of sheer respect to his overall responsibility in the role. But nowadays, only Francis Coppola would be able to say for sure...

Vito explained this to Michael when they were in the garden. He said that women and children can be careless, which Fredo was when he dropped his gun during the assassination attempt of Vito.

Michael offered to buy out Mo Greene because he knew Mo would be offended and deny his request. Michael had already planned to kill Mo Greene but needed an excuse. Fredo was just a weak pawn who was tolerated as long as he didn’t carry any liabilities. Once he became a liability, he was eliminated.

I think everyone is forgetting Fredo caught pneumonia as a baby. So that afflicted him physically and especially mentally. As we say in today's society he is a kind person but a little slow. And in the cut throat world of the Mafia a slow witted person wouldn't be a smart move for the survival of a crime family. Michael was the smartest, he was the only college attendant with studies in Business Administration and a War and Military vet.

I think a lot of Fredo's insecurities are because of Vito who played favourites when it came to his sons. He even refused to look at Fredo after his return from the hospital. The relationship b/w the brothers was loving and Fredo would not have betrayed Sonny, seeing in him a protective elder brother. When Michael visits Vegas, one can see Fredo wants to impress him. Instead Michael gives him a whiplash in front of others. I think this is when Fredo started turning against Michael. Wish Vito had talked to both of his sons after Sonny's death and explained why Michael was given the charge of the empire. But Vito never had time for his middle son.
