Other than 2012, 2002 had to be the craziest red flag in 500 history. Sterling Marlin will go to his grave saying that he saw Dale Sr. work on his car under a red flag at Richmond (when it actually was under a yellow flag).
While he never specified, can't deny the fact that when Earnhardt did it, that was under caution for sure. Also, the same race when he and DW collided.
It's incredible to see how little red flags there used to be. And how many there are nowdays. I guess that's the product of pack racing. Every wreck is a 20 car pile up that requires a red

I have never had a problem with finishing under yellow. GWC is so artificial. So are red flags for finishes. I get it but its purely for the show. Marlin should have had a third, Almarola should have won one. Ragan and Biffle too , Logano won anyway so did Kenseth, Gordon and Johnson, Mark Martin should have won regardless, Nascar screwed him on both a red flag and a delayed yellow...
No offence to NASCAR fans, but my favourite event, the Bathurst 1000 has only ever had three red flags. 1) in 1981, a massive pile up blocked the track and the race was declared with Queensland's Dick Johnson to win his first of three. 2) in 1992 a huge rain storm hit late in the race. Three cars crashed at the exit of turn 18, one car rolled after hitting the wall after aquaplaning into said wall, and race lead Jim Richards crashed as well. Due to the rules f the time, Jim Richards and co driver Mark Skaife were declared the winners as Jim crashed under red flag conditions. 3) in 2014 the track literally was breaking up in a crucial braking zone after a poorly done resurfacing job prior to the race. At least two cars have hit the wall as a result of the track surface and the race was halted. After approximately one hour, the race restarted which ended with Chaz Mostert and co driver Paul Morris to win. Paul was one of the drivers in the wall due to the track breaking up.
From memoryIt was red flagged on the 1984 start too. They should have red flagged it in 86 too but thats a long story which I'm sure you are aware. Oh and btw Richards would have won under the rules now, yesterday, forever its always been the last completed lap where the race result was taken in every series ever, Hence why Fisichella won in Brazil, despite being on fire or Paul Warwick won a race despite being tragically killed.
nah 86 was fine car was off the track no need for a red flag or even a safetycar. although in 86 there was no safetycar it didnt come in till 1987 @@LB1973

So, every race between those two ever?
There was a race in the late 70's early 80's that Dale Sr worked on his car under red flag conditions (in California at Stockton 99)

Next year nascar buy ARCA maybe you can do some ARCA red flags
Maybe there's room for ARCA. More so this year since all of the races are live and televised.
