  • So you've decided to take up riding. You've been looking at all the riding gear and window shopping for your new ride, but just how much does it actually cost to get your bike licence in the UK?
Like I say in the video, no matter what route you decide to go down, I always recommend getting professional tuition before sitting any tests.

Guys, average cost £500-1000, passed theory and cbt and mod 1, first time. And my instructor sorted me out. But failed mod 2 twice, which was enfuriating because I’m a moped courier and have done 20,000 miles safely. But I kept going. Total cost. £987. Worth every penny. Keep going, don’t give up.

Well done for passing. Can I ask what you failed on please..

    • @flavoursonly
      @flavoursonly 2 роки тому +10

@@freedom14639 first fail, was really bad luck, I was coming off a slip road joining national speed limit dual carriageway and there was a Range Rover (surprise surprise) who saw me on the slip road with examiner behind me and sped up to around 80mph closing my gap, slip road was approaching an end. But I gassed it up to about 90 got infront of him and caused him to slow down (as he should of) but as we all know, causing another driver to slow down, whether they are speeding or not is a serious, and I failed on that alone. Apart from that 4 minors. Second time, I was ridiculously anxious, starting to worry as I couldn’t afford to fail, and simply took the 3rd exit in the outside lane of a roundabout. I knew I had failed at that point and that was that. 3rd time I passed good clean drive, mindset was, fuck it. I’m nearly 900 deep at this point I’m just gonna keep going. And I passed with 3 minors. I should of passed first time I’m a long time bike rider with over 50,000 miles across the UK delivering safely. But the test, is the test. Both people who passed on my second goes with (my instructor worked in pairs) were not safe riders in my opinion but passed anyway. Things like pulling into a dual carriageway are the most easy points to fail because anxiety takes over and you have to make a decision quickly. My examiner told me, you shouldn’t of tried to get out, and came to a stop on the top a slip road, something I didn’t consider at the time. Hope this helps. Good luck.

@@flavoursonly is this the cost for just getting the
CBT or the whole full license? In the long run i definitely want to get my full license but in the meantime i feel like having an A2 license would be fine. im not too experienced on motorbikes, haven’t got my CBT or anything like that. i feel like im a fast learner and would be able to adapt quickly. so i would wanna get my A2 license ASAP and then get an MT-07 but A2 restricted. would i be silly for doing that?

CBT end of October on an auto ( didn’t ride for 3 months with poor weather) . Bought 125 Honda . My friend helped me with the clutch . Did 300 very shaky miles , went for DAS . Day one transition from small to big bike on the pad for mod 1 training. Week later more trying and bike ride to test centre to practice, felt uncomfortable on the longish ride out with a few twists in the road . Was put in for Mod 1 test the next week . Didn’t sleep,at all. Phoned to cancel and said will ride another 300 or so miles and return . I made a good choice to which they were fully understood. Realised after theses vids that I wasn’t steering correctly on the bends , practicing pushing the barrs all last week and improved so much . Much more confidence. These vids are so good because know one seems to do motorbike lessons as such ( practical ) as it mainly direct access . Feel better now and hope to do Mod 1 in 3/4 weeks. I’ve never rode before so I’m pleased with my progress and I do over worry ..

For anyone looking for an idea how much it cost for the training school, I did my DAS with phoenix (Farnham)
    Total cost: 699
Mod 1: full day training + bike + test: 304
Mod 2: full day training + bike + test:
    395
Had spent a year or so on a scooter before. Flew though the test. Felt the training was worth it. You pick up some bad habits when you ride on 125.

    • @gb2983

@sambagogo777 not really. For me, the main difference was the brakes, they are sharper than i was used to, and it caught me off guard when i started to get into the flow. The throttle response is different, but not as much as I expected. as long as you let the clutch out slowly, even if you're revving it more than enough to not stall, you're golden.

total cost to myself as someone who had been driving for 42 years but no bike licence so started from scratch at 60yo, & all up including CBT, lessons, test fee's etc was somewhere in the region of £1000-£1200. i failed my mod1 first time, but passed 2nd time and took a few more lessons than i probably needed to so i felt more confident on a bigger bike. I spent a year on my 125 doing 10k miles before doing the DAS, and as you mention the experience is invaluable, i just didn't want to try cram it all in and do it too quicky, and i'm glad of the way i did it as i feel it's made me a better rider than i otherwise may have been. So. I have a car license and have had a cbt for 6 years. I sold my bike and used the money to pay for my theory, training for mod 1 and mod 2. Passed the final mod 2 today. Total cost £900. It is not cheap. In my local area there is a 5 day intensive course and it costs £2,500… 😅 if anyone is in the south cambs area and wanting to learn, I hugely recommend Bike sense who run their school at Bourne airfield. Fantastic people who genuinely care more about teaching you the right way as opposed to just taking your money and walking away. I feel very lucky to have learned with them from my very first cbt days to my full A licence. AJ, the senior instructor even came in on his annual leave so that I could take my mod2 when a slot opened. I can’t speak highly enough of this school.

I passed my bike test in 1978 (yeah I know. I'm old). In those days it was totally different. You could ride anything up to and including a 250 on L plates for as long as you liked. The only two things being you couldn't carry a passenger or go on motorways. And the test was just one part. The practical. And that was a bit of a joke. The examiner stood at the side of the road watching you. In theory when he/she was out of sight you could do anything. A wheelie if you wanted to. And in theory you could pass your test on a 50 (as long as it wasn't classed as a moped - it had to have pedals) and get straight on a 1000 plus. As long as you could get insurance of course. Okay this situation had to change and I agreed with the changes, but the process is just too complicated (and expensive) now. CBT, theory and practical. Different classes according to engine size and power. I wouldn't like to do it now.

If you have a CBT and know how to drive and how to do it safely and know what the rules of the road by learning them remembering to do shoulder checks etc. You dont need to pay the 500-1000 Mod 1 is simple that can be done straight from the government website and it costs £15 to book. Mod 2 is where it could get more tricky its £75 or something and its half an hour of driving where you have to make sure you do everything correct. I understand a school can get you prepared for this but you can learn this yourself by driving on a CBT

Hi, thanks for a great video. I've been a car salesman for the past 20 years now however my passion has never been with cars but with bikes. After watching my brother crash and severely breaking his leg along with my dad having numerous accidents and worst of all my friend paralyzing himself in a bike accident, it's safe to say I was cautious about taking my test for many years. I feel now that I have grown and matured I am ready to tackle it head on and get myself riding. This will hopefully also open some doors for me in terms of my career progression and allow me to move my sales experience over into the motorcycle industry where I can take my experience and mix it with passion. We have a beautiful Harley Davidson dealership 5 minutes from my house and I always think just how cool it would be to work there selling such beautiful machines to people who share that same passion I have. Anyway sorry for banging on lol and thanks again for a great video.

The good thing is you've recognised that your ready to take it on. Having the right mindset for riding is absolutely crucial in my opinion. Hopefully you can get into the bike trade. I think I could have really done it all for just over half that.

Just passed my full licence today, I have a car and a blue light driving qualification for context.
I went the CBT - Direct access route, after my CBT I had 3 days training and 2 test days in total. Combining the theory test, CBT and licence I would say I paid £1100. I live in London so obviously there is a premium there. I did pass everything first time so didn’t have to pay twice for anything.
I would say I got amazing value for money mainly because I’ve loved every second of it and now I have a full licence.
Can’t wait to go bike shopping now!!

I'm busy doing my license. My CBT was £165 and my MOD1 was £135, my MOD 2 is booked for the 10th of Jan. I did take 1 lesson for my MOD 1 which was £90 and I'm gonna take 2 lessons for my MOD 2 also at £90 each. My MOD 2 cost is gonna be £200. That's the over all cost for me. So all in, including my theory test the total is £706. That's if I don't fail my MOD 2 😅 I have been riding 32 years illegally and finally decided to get a license. The only reason I'm taking the lessons is so I can unlearn all my bad habits. I could technically do the test with my eyes shut but I wanna be better safe than sorry. Plus here in the UK it's much harder to ride without a license, compared to where I came from. My "license" was a £50 note in my pocket and everytime I got pulled and the cop asked for my license I would have him that and he would say "have a good day sir" it doesn't quite work like that here 😂

Just passed my tests, I'd never try to pass without training even after riding a 125 for a year, I took a 5 day course with the tests on 2 of those days and passed first time, cost the best part of a grand but I was happy enough with that as I passed with only 1 minor on the mod 1 for going 49kph in the hazard avoidance, and 2 minors on my mod 2 for approaching roundabouts too slow, the good thing about having lessons is they will take you over the worst roads possible on the test routes so you can deal with them on the test day, I was told the next mod 2 if I failed was in November and that it was another £225 for the use of the bike and the test so I was very relieved when I passed, but he kept me waiting about 5 minutes back at the test centre before telling me I'd passed

125cc is definitely the best route if you’ve never been on a bike. I was pretty confident riding a bike but if you drop the bike or have a small slide like I did then it doesn’t really bother you. Anyone who doesn’t ride bikes and is wanting to just bare in mind, you will come off at some point.

Rode Yamaha rd 250’s Honda 175’s and even a Goldwing back in the late 1970’s…..without a licence because they belonged to mates and they let me. I was young and bike daft but my Dad refused to act as guarantor so I couldnt buy my own bike. That was that. Cars came along when I was 17yrs old, I loved them as well. Dad was happy I wouldn’t kill myself anymore.Fast forward, to me being 64yrs old. I thought if I don’t do it now I never will. I took the fast track full bike licence mullarkey and had everything passed within two months. Not cheap at all to be fair. With lessons, which were invaluable, test fees, theory , bike hire I reckon it cost me £700. That said, I wouldn’t have changed a thing. I loved the craik at the school I went to. The instructors taught me bike things on the road that I didn’t have a clue about even though I’ve driven cars for 47years. The Mod 1 & 2 tests were fair if you’d put the graft in. I fortunately passed both first time. Never been so elated for years. Freedom to buy a decent bike. I bought a Triumph Tiger 660 sport….because I could, and nearly two thousand miles later I’m loving every time I go out upon it. Still got oodles to learn about riding but I feel I improve on every trip out. One mantra taught to me by my instructor was , treat every motorist as if they are trying to kill you.
It’s a bit morbid but so true. Junctions especially. To all bikers who are thinking about doing the tests or who are midway through them. Go after it. It’s the best thing I’ve done in years.
