  • I trekked into the Amazon. My guide said this snake could kill me. Handling a deadly snake... or is it?
The Amazon rainforest is crawling with poisonous snakes, but it's also crawling with non-venomous ones as well. Knowing the difference when you're handling a boa constrictor like this one is important. If you plan on hiking frequently through the rainforest, you should know! Don't be ignorant when catching Amazon snakes bare-handed.
I was guessing we found a green emerald boa, but when you have not lived in a rainforest, it can be difficult to correctly identify something you've only seen once in your life. Guessing wrong could be a big mistake! This is not the most dangerous snake in the Amazon, it's harmless for humans other than the fact it can bite you. How do these snakes hunt? They will hold onto a tree or branch with their powerful tail and catch their prey. For humans who love to climb trees, you will be just fine hanging around these. Is this snake dangerous to humans? Yeah, not so much. MOST DANGEROUS SNAKE IN THE WORLD? Yeah, not so much.
Why are snakes poisonous or venomous? They use for venom killing prey, for defense, and to assist with digestion of their prey. The venom is typically delivered by injection using hollow or grooved fangs, although some venomous snakes lack well-developed fangs.
Probably the best-known characteristic of boa constrictors is their method of killing. Boas are not venomous; rather, they kill their prey by constriction, or squeezing, it to death.
