A well recorded cd can sound fantastic! Like the DTS version (especially in 5.1 surround sound) of Gaucho from Steely Dan. Incredible! And many of the Mobile Fidelity discs (but not all of them). But a well recorded DVD-A/SACD/HD on even an average Hi-Res player WILL sound better. I have the CD and DVD-A of Frampton Comes Alive! and Lines On My Face is CLEARLY better on the DVD-A version. Particularly the cymbals. Just my opinion. Have a great day!

'THE COMPLETE DAC D/A CONVERTER LIST' is a great online resource - although it has a few omissions, it's a pretty comprehensive list of CD players that tells you not only which DAC a particular player contains, but also which transport mechanism. The Philips TDA1541 DAC, for example, was widely used in several other manufacturers' CD players, as were their robust swing-arm mechanisms.

I ended up buying a new Tascam CD200BT CD player/transport online from B&H. Some of the other brands seemed to have transport reliability issues such as skipping, scratching or not playing every disk fed to it. Tascam is very inexpensive for a semi pro player. BT only working through the analog circuits tells me it is sufficiently isolated from the Redbook digital output to provide a clean signal for my external Schiit Modius DAC. The transport mechanism should last a decade or more. Got it for $360. My local audio retailers didn't have any Redbook CD players nor did the pawn shops lol. It's also very nice to see how many tracks, how long of playing time and which track is playing unlike my BluRay player. The remote is very handy too.
Thanx for your channel. The CD player reviews lit a fire and helped me to aquire a decent reliable and affodible Redbook transport while the getting is still possible.

I am excited to see my content create such a fun enthusiasm for the CD and CD Player. I think the Tascam is a great player. It's a tank, it's built for commercial use, so it should last you at least three lifetimes. Paired with a nice DAC it should be a great purchase! Thank you for watching and if you ever want to talk shop I am always available.

I switched back to CD after more than a decade. Before that I also bought more CDs, ripped them and listened to them with a lot of effort (reclocker, audio software, jitterbugs ...) via a NOS-DAC, really really good. Then doubts arose whether a good CD drive could sound even better? I ended up with the Pro-Ject RS2 T via the very good Audiolab 6000 CDT. Again a lot of money sunk in an external power pack, isolating transformer, fuse and cabling for the drive. It's possible that very good (and much more expensive) network players can match the sound, but I doubt it. I bought my first CD player almost 40 years ago (see my homepage) and will remain loyal to the medium. On the one hand for sound reasons, on the other hand we love to go back to the CD shelf to pull out a nice disc and then listen to it. Thx for your nice videos.

I personally own a SONY UHP-H1 Premium Audio/Video BluRay player that plays BluRay Audio, SACD, DVD-Audio, XRCD and pretty much every other CD you can think of. I use it as a transport digitally through HDMI and it sounds excellent through my Yamaha Aventage receiver that leads to a Parasound 2125v2 2 channel amp and Klipsch RP-160m’s for good 2 channel stereo HiFi listening. I love CD sound but if you can, try the Hi Rez disk formats like BluRay Audio, SACD, DVD-Audio, XRCD, HDCD as well as CD’s. I have to admit that I still want a dedicated CD spinner as well though! Keep clean Hi Fidelity sound alive!

Just a note that your link for the under $1000 CD Player and Transport Cambridge unit is for the AXA35 Integrated Amp and not the AXC35 CD Player (if that's what you intended it to be) nor the CXC v2 CD Transport. I bought the AXC35 recently and like it a lot. It was right in my price range and although not including an optical output, it works great for me. The only nitpick I have for the unit is that the remote is pretty uninspired. It would be great if Cambridge had an option to upgrade the remote that would include using it for my Cambridge AXR85 that I pair this CD Player up with. Thanks for the video!

Even after adding aftermarket power supply , Furutec IEC with silver jumper to the PS board, and 110/220 bypass jumper, when coaxed to my Audio Alchemy DDP-1 + PS 5 power supply it sounded pretty good, but did not compare to my Marantz HD CD- 1, which I picked up slightly used $400 and only used as a transport, until it died. My preamp now only has balanced xlr outs so if it is better analog i will probably be sourcing a new/used preamp with balanced xlr inputs. The Nad has aes/ebu input so maybe the cec will sound better as a transport. Its supposed to be one of the best made for analog sound anyway. Basically wanting what to purchase next i.e. Good preamp with balanced xlr inputs and great interconnects, or a great quality aes/ebu cable to run as dac. Already bought a nice Audioquest Power cord as ive heard the cec is sensitive to that. We'll see. Great channel btw

Hello buddy! First of all thanks for the video. I'm from Brazil and unfortunately they don't produce CD Players anymore here in my country and to buy imported ones it's financially unfeasible, because it's very expensive due to the high import fees added to the freight cost.
I love having and listening to physical media. I have a lot of CDs and I own an LG DVD Player (Model 5952 N) and I use it to listen to my records. I have some doubts:
1- You mentioned this in the video, but what is the difference between CD Player and CD Transporte?
2- Is there really a perceptible difference between listening to a disc in a CD player or in a DVD player?
3- My device is connected to Receiver ONKYO through an optical output, is this good or not? Or is it better to plug in the RCA output?
    Thank you very much!

I bought a used DCS Puccini. Fabulous player, but I am not sure it is worth the new RRP. Used it was still expensive, but since I play CDs everyday for 2-4 hours , I decided it was worth the money to me. I did audition the player in my home for 2 weeks before I bought it and I would say that is essential if you are spending a fair chunk of money. Buying used CD players does carry some risk as the laser diode has a finite life. With the right tools and patience it’s possible to source a new laser for most models and swap it yourself, but it’s worth seeking out a player that’s had the laser changed if you’re not sure. It will be much more expensive to have an engineer do it later. The other component that degrades over time is the drive belt for the mechanism. If the player has been stored for some years the rubber belt will be brittle, shiny and egg shaped. The drawer will likely not open. Again, not expensive to source, but one to be aware of.

Plus I upgraded the internal fuses with nice ones from HiFiTuning and unplugged the power to the analog board, using coax out to the Chord mscaler/TT2 DAC/Amp feeding a Ferrum Hypsos PS/OOR hp amp. Plus, without the need for the MASSIVE extra weight of the kgs of copper used in the (£2000) 2500 NE, which will not actually absorb internal RESONANCE anywhere near as efficiently IMO. Of all the myriad tweaks/mods I've made to my system, this has been by far the best bang-for-buck.

It has a good Matsushita DAC as well as a Sony transport. The big thing is the digital outputs, so you can also run an external DAC if you choose to do so, which this unit offers. Yeah, if you can get it for around $100 and it's clean, I would do it.

Did you consider, just for fun, checking out XBox One/Series X and Playstatioin game consoles? They are expensive enough to sit right in the middle of the $0-$1,000 pack. Until I get a good CD player/transport, I am using the XBox One S. It plays games, movies, streams and CDs. It does a rather good job. Just played my new CD, the White Album from the Beatles, and it (the music, not the XBox) sounded fantastic. I'm not into pouring in money for an expensive CD player just so I can say I have money falling out of my pockets. I have to be practical and be aware of my funds for fun stuff.

I need help understanding why a $1000 cd transport is better than a used DVD or cd player thats functioning as a transport. Wont all transports simply take the digits and push to a receiver or external DAC before going to speakers? Since we are talking digital it all works or doesn't. Now, I can see how components really matter for analog because we are dealing with non digital and even vibrations can impact sound. Again, how is a super expensive transport better than a cheap and used transport?

I used to think the same thing, then I tried an Audiolab 6000CDT. The difference was staggering. Audiolab produced deeper bass, more detail, greatly expanded soundstage and greater dynamic range. I believe the difference is due to the amount of jitter my old player had, which apparently was much greater than the Audiolab.

have popped up only in the last few years and that term seems somewhat derogatory, condescending, and unnecessary.

Seems that if you rip CDs to FLAC one would bypass any concern over transport and the DAC in any player/transport. Your creating a straight lossless digital copy / file. I play my music straight off the server HDMI into my receiver. The only DAC involved is within the receiver where it has to take the digital signal and convert it to analog to drive the main amp. Also, I like being able to control what I am listening to from my PC rather than swapping CDs in and out.
I recently re-ripped my entire collection to FLAC. Before everything was MP3. And, in many cases, depending upon the mastering there is a significant difference in sound quality.

Why not saying the truth - even very cheap CD ROMs for computers were able to read CDs without any uncorrectable reading errors 16 or more times faster than needed for audio CD playback.
The only difference in sound quality might come from the DAC - but since 1 bit oversampling DACs were introduced it is very cheap to build high precision DACs for audio purposes also. Very cheap means less than $5.
