#typewriter In Typewriter Video Series Episode 341, Joe makes a deep dive into the subject of typewriter cases, including the various locking mechanisms.
Wow, I kinda woke up from a nap and this was playing, sleepily I thought, this is going to be boring and I’ll catch another 15 minutes of shut-eye… not! Absolutely fascinating, I’m still asking myself why? Thanks for spending my money. I saw at least three new to me typewriters I just have to have. What a great presenter.
This is fantastic, Joe! I was just struggling with my streamline Floating Shift Smith Coronas and your video came in handy! Great timing and a great video. So comprehensive and fun to watch. Keep 'em coming!
14:41 corona case is what i was having trouble with. I purchased a typewriter and it came in today. I had no clue how to open it 😅. Thought i needed a key that the seller didn’t include. Thank you so much for this video. Made a subscriber out of me. Look forward to watching the rest of your content 😁
Thankyou for this video 🙌. It makes me appreciate each case. I find cases cool. I love the double latch and engraved name on my corona four. Thanks for taking the time and effort to make and share these videos. You are appreciated 👍
Looking back at the cases over the years really does show you what worked well and held up and what didn't. To me the zipper cases are the least liked as they often snag. Probably the cheapest cases are the those thin vinyl covered cardboard boxes akin to a box what a nice sweater might come in. No latches, no hinges, fold the front over the cheap plastic handle. I ran across one years ago in a thrift store and didn't even know it was a typewriter case and would have passed it by had I not moved it to look at something else and sensed there was something in it.. Opened it up and there sat a nice little Underwood 318 inside.
Your two Hermes with the chrome or mirrored handle shoulder straps indicate they are Deluxe Models...which for the Hermes' it just meant the cases went up a level lol not the typewriter as there is no improving on perfection! Joe can you do a video on your complete collection to date, I'd love to hear how and where you got what and when, maybe talk a bit about it how it types, which ones are best for long sessions of writing live novels or maybe not maybe good for letters only, or how it ranks on a scale of 1 to 10 and 1 is the best like Hermes, and 10 is like a dull pencil lol. But I and I'm sure others would like a Show and Tell of your collection. A long video, or maybe break it up into Part 1, Part 2, and so on... Or maybe like say one video a week featuring a typewriter in your collection, your channel you pick. I'd ask that you start with, where it began, the first typewriter you first picked up that started your collection, to the last one for now. Also, is there a machine or machines still on your collection list or are you done collecting? For me I plan on just a small collection because the way I figure the more I get the more up keep and room I'll need. And with each one, I'll need to buy a duplicate for parts. So 10 or 12 is probably the limit for me, unless I just see one that calls my name and sings to my Irish☘️❤️. Here is my list, for what I have currently, then space is followed by my wish list. 1932 Remington Portable 1966 Smith Corona Galaxie Deluxe 1968 Royal Aristocrat 1972 Smith Corona Electra 110 (Want to collect) Olivetti Lettera 35i, DL, and 22 Smith Corona Super G Orange Hermes 3K Curvey SMG9 (well any relly lol) Underwood #5 Standard Smith Corona Golden Shield in that rust brown, I think it's basically a Skywriter rebranded from the 1950s...not sure, but usually they're a turquoise blue/green a bright tropical green color .. As I'm sure all us collectors can say and agree upon, I'll know it when I see it. If I ever get a Hermes 3000 typewriter I think I'd pass out. Lol Thank Joe 👍
The Monroe calculators came with a typewriter-like case and a crank handle for when the power went out. The case and spare cranks are more rare than the machine.
Hey Joe, I’m looking to get a thermal typewriter, which I’ve heard are good for coffee shops and generally don’t make too much noise. Plus using thermal paper instead of ink sounds like it’d be fun. What kind of thermal typewriter would you recommend for a beginner?
A Canon Typestar or Brother EP43. Canon made a series of Typestar models, I have the 4, 5 and 220. The 220 is a bit newer, makes a darker imprint on thermal paper and also has a document memory for recording files you’d want to frequently print out.
How would one build a typewriter case that mimics the real thing? I have a 1938 Remington Model 5 without a case. Are the old cases thin plywood with a fabric covering? What kind of joinery holds the sides together?
15:08 would you mind explaining the Candelabra? I wanna know what placing it on typewriter first before typing means so i can get a candelabra as well 😁
I use a GH3 with 20/1.7 lens for the main shot, and a G7 with usually a manual focus lens for B-roll. Lately I’ve been using the G7 overhead above the table with the old 14-45 (the original u4/3 lens!).
I’m sorry, I have no orphaned cases available. I recommend you find a “Tupperware” style container large enough, line the bottom with urethane foam padding (from the craft store). I did this for my Corona 3 and it worked well.
Unfortunately the S-C system was/is too complicated for non typewriter types and so many machines were damaged by not getting them latched in. Plus those later plastic latches get broken and or stripped screws. The Royal cases have a better hold down mech and latches. The Remington team deserves the ‘wtf’ award, but otherwise they are tank cases. The Olympia wood represents the largest gap between typewriter and case. A light mist in the basement and say hello to a rusty machine. Watch for it peeps and steer clear. You’ll see many ‘mint’ sm3s with rust at the critical back end. The plastic hinge on the later clam shells will fail. The black guerrilla tape makes a great hinge reinforcement/replacement. Hey it sound not so ‘elegant’ but it works and if done carefully it’s not even noticeable., We have “best case” in our place and the Hermes 2000 is the current leader with the humble Brother 709 in a close second.
Thank you. Finally, an explanation without 20 minutes of life story
The holiday case is a great idea. They really did build things to last back then

Instructive and comprehensive, I really appreciated this video. Moreover we get to see upclose a number of classic machines and this is good.

Very helpful! Thank you.
Got my Remington Quiet Riter (almost exactly as you showed), at the local Thrift Store in perfect condition for $5.
Bought a Royal Safari III for $30 in perfect shape this weekend. Gonna try to fix my mom's old Remington and also find our Brother Correctotron 3
Hey Joe! Hope you got my Christmas card. My favorite case is for my Groma Kolibri- very classy. Thanks for the videos, as always!
How about dye for the Royal fabric case cover material that is stained/discolored?

Interesting video !!!!
How do I replace the leather handle on a 3-bank Underwood Standard Portable case?

Thin wood with finger joints on the corners, covered in leatherette.

The design of the Corona Standard reminds me of a piano, so of course it needs a candelabra, even though I can’t play a piano!😊
@@Joe_VanCleaveah yes! I see it. Getting me a mini candelabra now. Thanks!
I guess it lacks the zipper cases ... my Kolibri got one, my Olympia SF also... Lettera 22, 32 etc...
I saw in the past you were using a G7. Did you use that with the kit lens in manual for this vid?
I use a GH3 with 20/1.7 lens for the main shot, and a G7 with usually a manual focus lens for B-roll. Lately I’ve been using the G7 overhead above the table with the old 14-45 (the original u4/3 lens!).
Didn't you make a crate style case for one of your standards? Was that the KMM?
Yes I did, but ran out of time to mention it!
How much is the orange case one love that one need to learn how to type on the rype writer.
Do any one know if a royal 990 case work for a 890 typewriter, or any other cases that can work.
I have a 1946 Smith Corona Clipper 4 series but no case. Would you happen to have one that you are willing to sell?
I’m sorry, I have no orphaned cases available. I recommend you find a “Tupperware” style container large enough, line the bottom with urethane foam padding (from the craft store). I did this for my Corona 3 and it worked well.
@@Joe_VanCleave Ahh, yes. Great idea. I will try that. Thank you. Love your videos .

If you now were a typewriter case only that is for a 890 royal typewriter, my typewriter did not came with one, please tell me if you now were is one.
Can't help you with an exact case, but for portable typewriters an older laptop computer bag works, as does a Pelican-style hard case.
@@Joe_VanCleave I'm also thinking about making one from the ground up. Or Maybe I will do that.
