  • We hiked the famous Narrows in Zion National Park in April, during the time when the river is freezing cold with snow melt water. The trail was closed for 4 days prior, because of high water levels, but we were finally able to hike the trail on our last day in Zion!

We take a big trip annually with another family (11 kids total between the two families). We just returned from a 17 day road trip with them to the Four Corners. We spent several days at Zion. Due to logistical reasons, I hiked the Narrows without anyone else from my family, but with my buddy (the dad of the other family) and three of his four kids. I went on for a while after their stopping point, but they stole the show that day by inflating inner tubes that they brought with them and then tubed the Virgin River to get back to the Riverside Walk.
That may be a cool wrinkle to try that I haven’t seen anyone else do in person or online.

That is an amazing idea!!!! I wonder if the rangers would have anything to say about that, or if they wouldn’t care. It certainly would make the trip back much easier! 😆

@@McVeyMcFarm Not sure about rangers. I guess the other big thing would be to have optimal water levels. Not sure how shallow the deepest parts get as the summer goes on. For me, the deepest water I went through was chest height and I am 5’9”

Do you remember what the CFS was for the river when you were there?

CFS? Sorry, I’m not familiar with that acronym.

I'm going in the end of April. Anything you would have changed? Would you have chosen the dry suit instead of the bib? Wear some warmer clothes underneath?

No, the bibs were fine for us, since the water never got up past our waist, but we were very thankful our boys had the dry suits on. Your feet will be freezing, but there’s not much you can do about that. It was actually quite warm in the sunshine areas, so we were perfectly fine in just our light jackets underneath. Our boys were a bit colder because the water came up higher on them, and they don’t have as much natural insulation. Our hands were a bit chilly, so as long as you don’t plan to put your hands in the water, you could wear some gloves. On the way back, I tripped, and both of my arms got soaked, so that wasn’t fun. But otherwise, we enjoyed it! Make sure you bring food and water with you!

So sorry, it was our first time and we had no one instructing us on the proper way to do it.
