    I have the AlpineStar and now have 3 broken ribs from highsiding over the bars and the end of the bar penetrating where the front/back overlap. Not Alpinestar's fault...just a freak accident. I'm gonna buy the Leatt 6.5 and go for the coverage. At 67, I don't mend as easily as I once did. Thank God, I didn't hurt my bike.

      I've got the alpinestars tech bionic tech V2 as well and added additional rib protection from an Astars nucleon back brace I use for road riding. But I decided recently to add even more. Bought a carting rib protector and going to sew that on to the astars pressure suite. probably just easier to buy a new Leatt at the end of the day but I have a hard time throwing out gear and love to try DIY when I can.

    I've got the Leatt 5.5 body protector. It's just as protective as the 6.5 but maybe less features. I'm very happy with it. I've got other soft armour shirts but I'm not convinced they provide protection against rocks and other pointy impacts which CE doesn't test for. My riding zone is covered in pointy embedded rocks. Soft armour is much less protective against that kind of hazard.

    Really great run down on the new progression into the updated armor line guys! I agree with all you say for how well this type of protection works.
    After decades of riding sporting work boots/leather jacket/work gloves/helmet meant some cuts/bruises back in the day. Flash forward with much more time on a bike and racing experience off road I did the roost/jersey/mx boot/armored route and had far less sore days. Skip even another 30 yrs and riding a lot of adv I now find these under protection is a night and day deal. Comfortable, added protection that stays put no matter how you exit from the bike. It truly makes a difference making all your gear fit just a bit better and sure adds a whole level of protection and confidence you are not taking a hard handlebar hit, that rock or tree limb you never saw going down but never really felt in your personal little cacoon. I really endorse these protective armored shirts not just for MX but for more comfort and protection in the ADV word of riding. For the money it moves your protection level up a lot and, again, it helps keeps your other armor and clothing feeling so much better on a long day with that little bit of compression built in to it. Quite a few years ago I was a player/coach on a full contact adult lacrosse league where you needed enough pads to take some big hits but still had to run. You could not go full turtle. I got a compression/armor shirt and loved it for playing! It worked well. After knowing how well it worked I wore it out riding all day(s) in riding trips into the mountains as part of my gear. I added the more specific motorcycle armored shirts and never looked back. As an older guy now it sure makes a difference. Always wear your armor and be as safe as possible. Stay safe my friends.

    I'm ride Enduro/dual-sport recently Adventure. Started with a Rock Garden a decade or so ago then Leatt 4.5, 5.5 and after seeing the 6.5 it'll be next. I was unfortunate when Leatt moved the shoulder pads more to the sides between 4.5 and 5.5 because in tight Eastern woods, the front of my shoulders frequently slam trees. However, the ability to remove chest and back plates plus makes the 6.5 ideal to wear under my Helite air bag vest when on the Adventure Bike!

  • @kaaralex
    @kaaralex Рік тому +2

    thx for the introduction. Personally i like the last two most coz 1/ they cover also the side of the chest, and 2/ are CE 2. I can see from my other protectors that CE 2 ones are from softer material and can take in bigger impact than the the more "plasticky" CE 1 ones. Second reason why I like them most is that - like the others here in the comment section 🙂 I also fell down from my bike on a muddy slip on gravel road, not in high speed but I did land on side of my chest and broke a few ribs as a result. If i could go back in time and choose between two weeks of that !@*#^$*!@ pain again, or paying double/triple/.. for the better protection of my ribs, I would not hesitate a single moment. Ride safe everyone! 🙏

      Non-tethered (electronically controlled ones), inflate well before separation or in the moment of impact.
      That being said…
      They are only useful in race/road conditions and not off-road. And even in everyday situations there is no guarantee that the algorithm will 100% recognize the situation!
      On top of that, they had battery to maintain and special care in their use.
      But on the positive note, when they work properly, they offer much better protection over rigid ce 2 standard.

But, I had a good get of in the desert and that hard plastic cup just cause the pad to completely get pushed out of the way and absorbed nothing. Destroyed my elbow on the rock. So now I just wear the chest protector piece and if it's a rocky ride I'll throw separate t199 elbow pads on, or go without if at the track or sand or something. The trade off in heat and increased arm pump was not worth it when I real life tested it out. Pretty sure it was because of the hard plastic cup. Just my personal experience with it, nothing more.

My original comment was just I crashed in this, the elbow pads didn't seem to help at all, so unless riding rocky stuff I go without. I need to invest in full body armour. Talking jacket, padded pants and boots. I did an oopsie on my escooter. Going 20kmh i was touching my phone on the mount with my thumb (never what i usually do, i use my index no probs) and the handlebar just decided to go right and i jumped off, jumped again and twisted my body to land on my dominant side. Broken arm, fractured knee. Bedridden for 2+ months. Leg can walk again after few more months. Arm still cant bend like normal, been >6 months. At the time of the accident i was quite obese, and have lost >7 kilos since. So priority #1. Lost weight and work out. #2 get protective gear (preferably in smaller size as i lose weight).
    Imagine what would’ve happened if i just did a roll’y poll’y, the uber bag would’ve absorbed/slowed me down. I reckon i would’ve landed on my stomach after 1 full roll. Maybe 2 rolls. I literally always have the gopro on but this ONE!! Time!! I didnt click record.

    Personally I would avoid any of the 'side-zipper' designs. I have one (Leatt 5.5) and the zipper is a huge annoyance on an otherwise-great product. Because of the stretchy base material, it's difficult to zip up even when the fit is right. It feels like it's going to break every time I put it on, and it always creeps down while I'm riding because it's under tension. Get one where the base layer has a center zip and the chest/back protector are a separate unit, like the Bionic Tech or Leatt 6.5.

    • @rmatvmc
      @rmatvmc  7 місяців тому +1

      That is a good point about the side-zippers, it is where you're flexing, twisting, putting constant strain on the zipper. Thanks!

    I feel this was a big sales pitch video.
    None of them have any wrap around rib protection.
    When they are too lose and free liek the Alpinestar it will move all over, not stay in place and not protect the ride during a fall.
    I would not pick anyone of them.
    I love my Leatt 6.5 pro non jacket model as it wraps around the ribs better. I have tested it!

    • @rmatvmc

      These will offer protection for street riding, but these aren't designed with street use in mind so the materials are not intended to hold up on pavement at high speeds. I got a Leatt. Problem is the way that they attach the shoulder pad/protector, is very flimsy. After a few rides they are non functional so I ride with no protection there.
    Quite frustrating also, is that the Velcro/ hook and loop, for the arms, is way off the mark for my arms.
    Not sure if I am skinny or not, but the fit seems to suggest you need massive biceps or this product is not for you.
    How or why they can be making a safety product with such basic faults, is beyond my imagination.
    It's just another job for people like me to re-engineer yet another product. Do they even use their own product or care about the user experience ? The rest of it is good.

    Body armor jacket vs buying individual items?

    • @Croseb2
      @Croseb2 Рік тому

      I went individual so I could dial in the fit better. I’ve tried body armor but the fit of the elbow and shoulder protection doesn’t always fit right. I have the Fox Baseframe Pro short sleeve shirt that I wear under the basic Fox Raceframe. The combo offers CE protection for chest, back and shoulders. I added Leatt Hybrid elbow pads and a Leatt kidney belt. Everything fits as it should and I can always go with just the Fox Baseframe for road riding or mountain biking.
