  • What's not to love about a 645 E3 prime mover in throttle run 8!
An awesome smoke show as they are doing a Load Test on our
EMD SD 40--2 Locomotive. Video taken after dark as I was on my
way home from work. The orangish yellow light on the side of the shop
building is a switch position indicator light for the switch that is located
on the east side of bridge 14.

Dave is the kind of guy that found his niche in life. You can tell he enjoys the heck out of working for a railroad, and if he weren't working for them, he'd probably be railfanning them. I feel privileged to do both and really feel Dave's excitement. It got to me too, I just couldn't stay in the industry long enough to satisfy.

Thank you for the very nice comment JJ. I do love my job and sometimes on my day off will rail fan this place. We are so fortunate
that we have some new owners who purchased us and are keeping
us working steady. The last company had every intention of shutting
this place down. How sad that would have been. We do have problems here but all RR's have problems and we have some
good guys and work thru our problems and get things solved and
keep trains moving safely. Appreciate very much your paying us a
visit tonight to watch the video my friend.

Brings back the interesting days working in the Back Shop. The MILW was always power hungry. My buddy was supervising a load box test on an EMD SD45 after a total rebuild. The crew were at run-3 when the power desk foreman came by and demanded the loco. The crew let him know it would be a few hours to do the job right. He reached over and shoved the throttle into noch-8 and the unit shook a bit. The next thing the group heard was the turbo's impellers punching a neat circle of holes all around the car body. Needless to say the power desk didn't get what they wanted. Turns out that some yahoo left a large socket inside of the of the inlet to the turbo housing. Looking back I have one regret, I now wish I had keep some sort of daily journal of the people I worked with and all of the insane stuff that happened. I could've written a book or two.

Thanks Dave, enjoy your videos and your enthusiasm. I retired from GE (Wabtec) three years ago as the test cell engineer at the Grove City Diesel engine plant. I have always loved trains and big mechanical things. Was real exhilarating to be in the test cell with one of the big 16 cylinder engines. We would break them in slowly through the eight notches then shut them down for inspection and adjustments. After that, they would restart and notch up rather quickly (5 - 10 minutes) to Notch 8 which was 6250 hp for the 16's. Shook you to your very core.

But what we are seeing here is primarily steam - water vapor being a big byproduct of combustion engine exhaust - just as you'd see coming from you car's exhaust on a winter day. I worked as a hostler/machinist/car inspector for a northeast shortline at an outside post interchange. We still maintained an engine house at the time but continuouse cost cutting etc. resulted in selling/closing the engine house. I was able to keep my job from 1976 until 1983. My last year was in a consolidated old time baggage room attached to the Amtrak station I shared with the gutted track department. I knew my days were numbered. I got layed off in may 1983. I say all this because I still miss the railroad. My blood flows railroad. I wish I was still railroading. How I miss the gp-9s and the sound. I used to do this working as an electrician, in the diesel shop , for metro north back in1985-86. We used an external load box , looked like a giant refrigerator, even had General Electric prined on the front . It was just a giant box with resistors and a fan inside all powered by the locomotives generator. It had an amp meter and a volt meter on it to read power .Then the machinists would read a scale on the fuel rack to determine if the engine was using too much rack to make the measured power. That would determine if it were time for a rebuild. They had a few SD40's and lots of FL9's

Most -2's in the lower cabinet behind the engineers seat will have a selector switch. By putting it to self test or load test I can't remember how it's worded it will send all of the generated amps from the traction motors to the dynamics. It is a great way to test the electrical and mechanical systems minus the traction motors. You notch up the throttle just like you would if you were running down the rails.

Usually the load tests cause stack fires burning the excess carbon out of the exhaust system ! Good test to make sure the output is within acceptable range, and if not is a tool to find out why ! Thanks for sharing!

@00OMG, noise. Ohhhhhh. I have been a mechanic for 35 year what the hell is so great about this? I have worked on everything from 150kw gensets, to heavy equipment and Ferrari's, I have no idea what people find fasinating about fuel and air burning!

I saw this done in Cleveland when Conrail was at Collinwood. They had their own load box and tested several locos the day I was there. Also saw the same on CSX at Willard, Ohio back in the 80s with GP40-2s.

"Good Lord"...I've never heard anything so awesome (and humbling) as this beautiful EMD under test. "Spooling-up" @3:13 was quite the intro, and winding-down from "Run 8" @5:30 was "perfecto"!! From there on, it's that low, thunderous EMD growl that we all know and love...literally shook the snow out of the heavens above!!! Thank you, many times over, Dave...😊👍👍
