  • www.tfl.org || By Alistair Begg - Baptism, part of the Great Commission, is one of the two sacraments ordained by Christ. As we confess our need for forgiveness, we recognize that God has already provided everything our souls require through the sacrificial gift of His Son. In a careful consideration of why baptism is necessary and what it means, Alistair Begg explores this important step of obedience in the life of a Christian.

Begg “baptism is not the washing away of sin”
Bible “ Arise, and be baptized, and wash away your sin .” (Acts 22:16)
I’m going with the Bible not Begg on this one...

I tend to agree with you Alistair, But I cannot get past 1 peter 3 ,19 - 21 where he speaks that" Baptism now Saves you" . I can find other verses in the New Testament where this message is repeated. In the new testament, entire families were baptized As I am sure that you know, over the millennia children were baptized based on the theology.that God does the baptizing, not by man and that Baptism is a gift of God.This position between Calvin and Luther is very disconcerting to me.Yet I have remained in Christ since my Baptism as a child, 72 years. In and out of wavering faith and ugly paths but always brought back by Christ. This is very disturbing to my soul. I would never get re-Baptised because I would be saying that God's work didn't take. Can you help me out with this? May God continue to bless your work.

In the same boat, confused as to why there are such differences regarding baptism. I hope God has healed your heart over your wonderings. 🙏

1 Peter 3 21 The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:
Yes baptism saves. But it is clear In this passage that it is not water baptism or physical baptism. It is the baptism of the Holy Spirit when One Believes on the Lord Jesus Christ. The passage says baptism saves but then makes it clear it is not physical water baptism. The pudding off of Filth of the body or water baptism in physical water can't do anything! It is a pledge of good conscience towards God, meaning when a person recognizes they are a sinner and places his or her faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, that person receives the Holy Spirit. So if you are trusting a physical water baptism to save you oh, that is umbilical. You Must Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and Trust only what he did on the cross. It is not the putting off of Filth of the body, physical water baptism can do nothing.

@@doylebecker5365 Reading the passage in context it is clear 1 Peter 3:21 refers to water baptism. The ark passed through the water, while sin and rebellion were drowned. Likewise, we pass through the water in baptism while sin and rebellion is washed away/drowned. This passage is directly comparing the two. Remember your baptism daily... drown your sin and rebellion.

I believe as you do on baptism and trust God's Word to be true.

The passage is clearly talking about the ark (verses 18-20). The ark is a picture of Christ. The water is the judgement and wrath of God poured out on Christ. The the ark were 8 people and two of every kind of animal (he draws all men unto him of every tongue, tribe and nation). In Christ (the ark) we are saved.
Sin and rebellion will be wiped away only at His second coming and final judgement. In Him, we will pass through the water of judgement.

Who did Christ give instructions to? To his disciples(Jews)
Every word spoken, every action taken by Jesus during his life, was to fulfill what purpose? To present Gods chosen people with their Messiah
What did he COMMAND of his followers?(the last commandment given if not mistaken) To preach the gospel of the kingdom to the Jews ONLY, except when the kingdom of heaven was at hand and Jesus states to go out to the entire world, the kingdom of heaven was at hand.
What was Christs position when dealing with gentiles? Until the stoning of Stephen they were nothing more then dogs, not being fit for crumbs off the table of his children.
What is the significance of the largest portion of the Bible by any one author(13 epistles of Paul)? The gospel of grace given only unto Paul after the ascension of Christ(body of Christ-church-Christians)
Seven years after Pentecost the disciples still remained in Jerusalem, not preaching to the world, why? Because of the rejection of the Messiah by the nation of Israel(not individual rejection)then introduced the mysteries given to Paul, and paused the dispensation of the gospel of the kingdom and began the gospel of grace(finished work of the cross)while the disciples failing to have the understanding of the gospel of grace given to Paul, were still waiting for the soon fourth coming return of their Messiah.
I make these points to clarify the significance of instructions before and after Paul's epistles began. In the gospel of grace we are instructed to rely on the finished work of the cross, baptism comes from the holy spirit, any attempt to add to the finished work of the cross including water baptism and we will be required to make full payment for the atonement of our sins.

Scriptures & Science John 3:16 Whoever believes. This was said before Paul preached. He always knew through the disciples all would hear and through the spread of the gospel would be saved.

Scriptures & Science Jesus died for all. John 3:16 He knew through the disciples His words and gift of salvation would spread to everyone who hears.
