They had a sea of comics to work with, not to mention more than a trilogy of movies to inspire them, not to forget that the whole second movie was built around the Dr Ock character in particular. The story was good yes, but it presented nothing new. It was all about tweaking certain elements to provide something a little bit different. Mary Jane interpretation for example was very good in my opinion. Instead of being a damsel in distress, she is presented as a noisy journalist. Very good, but not amazing or incredible as youtubers would have you to belive. Mostly I think the story was very good, but it provided nothing new. And I still think Mr negative characterization was rather weak. And miles morales story arc was not all that strong.
How was negative weak? He has good reasons to go after Norman and was clearly conflicted. This game made me care about a villain I didn't really care about before.
Spider-Man PS4 and Spectacular Spider-Man are my favorite Spider-Man adaptations. They rank up there with some of the best material of Spider-Man in general. I loved that they set this eight years into Spider-Man’s career because it allowed them to weave in a sense of history and world building. The backpacks that you find add to that world building by giving some Easter eggs to other parts of Spider-Man canon. I loved how Peter has gone up against a lot of his villains, but his archnemeses haven’t appeared before this game. That allows them to have a Spider-Man with experience, but still leaves the door open for Peter to build these strong personal connections with his big villains. Furthermore, that sense of history helps to usher in Miles as a character. Having a Peter Parker with some mileage on him mentor Miles creates a sense of legacy. They have a good sense of brotherhood about them and I really bought their connection. I loved how they tied Miles into F.E.A.S.T., and how they handled F.E.A.S.T. in general. Focusing on the homeless shelter gives Peter a sense of kindness that goes beyond the superheroics, which is a nice touch. And having Aunt May working at F.E.A.S.T. gives her a nice role in the story while having her be the moral center of the game. I also liked that Mary-Jane was made to be more of a part of the story. A big problem with supporting cast members (especially love interests) in superhero stories is that it’s hard to find ways to weave them into the story. Making MJ a reporter (similar to her Ultimate counterpart) provides an easy way of adding her to the story. She could be a bit too much at times with being so adamant about throwing herself into danger and acting like Peter didn’t have a good reason to worry, but I liked how she acknowledged that later on, and for the most part I liked her.
Agree Insomniac Spider-man imho is the best Incarnation Spider-man to date. As much as I love the Sam Raimi one Insomniac really nailed it out of the park. And that ending is just pure bold and Imsomniac really dare to take risk.
I have seen many other reviews on this game, but none of those videos had that emotional Spiderman fanboy touch to it. Your narration for all the videos is awesome. All the best bro.
I’ve love Spider-Man since I was born, and this is literally the best superhero/Spider-Man game I’ve ever seen! Just my opinion, this game did what the Arkham series has never done. It feels like more of a movie than a video game. I still can’t believe this PS4 game outsold the EA Star Wars Battlefront games.😂
So glad I’m not the only one who actually feels responsible for side crimes. I got so attached to having fun with citizens that when I superjump, I do in on the street and not the sidewalk just so I don’t accidentally push citizens down. Browntable, outside of the Return to Zootopia series, this is your best video yet. I love Spider-Man, I have since I saw the first Raimi movie. For me, he embodies everything a good hero should be. The PS4 game perfectly represents that, just as your video perfectly represented why the game is amazing, spectacular, and other words Jameson likes to use. I loved the Raimi movies, love Spectacular, and I haven’t felt excited about anything related to Spider-Man on the same level I did for those two incarnations until now. Spider-Man, it fells great to have you back!
They perfected the character in this game. I've never seen a version of Peter with a story that so perfectly illustrates the mantra of 'with great power comes great responsibility'. The choices he is faced with and the decisions he makes demonstrate why Spider-Man is such an important superhero.
Story based alone, the best video game I’ve ever played was “To the Moon”. The only thing I’m gonna say about it is that it is more story than an actual game, and it really works.
I mean the game has flaws but because 99% of the game is so damn fun i can really easily ignore them. One thing i don't get is some people bashing the story because it predictable. Thats a stupid arguement especially if one is familiar with the lore. You kbow whats gonna happen but the game makes you feel IN SPITE of that.
I can’t believe people bash the story of this game! Because we know Doc Ock is gonna be one Doctor Octopus so the game plays off of that so it makes you not want him to become the villain we know he will!
5 things about this game (after playing it): 1. While I mostly enjoyed Homecoming more than most, this "movie" was better than Homecoming while also being better than the Spider-Man films in-between Spider-Man 2 & Spider-Man: Homecoming. 2. Yuri Lowenthall as the voice of Peter Parker/Spider-Man is the best Spider-Man (next to Tom Holland) since Tobey Maguire in Spider-Man 2. 3. Laura Bailey as MJ was great despite my problems with the character and her stealth missions outside of the first one. 4. The villains in the game (along with Vulture from Homecoming and Sandman from Spider-Man 3) are deeply realized and understandable. Last villain that was like that was Doc Ock in Spider-Man 2. 5. Despite my problems with certain game mechanics and characters being bad at certain times and the plot/plots of the "movie" being lost at times, this game constantly also gives me a reminder of why I love Spider-Man as a character and the world around him. Problems aside, this was one of the best superhero games/video games I've played in recent memory. Can't wait for the sequel and whatever comes next from Insomniac Games.
I’ve heard so many good reviews about this and love the dialogue and animation of it. And apparently the story is fantastic. Too bad I don’t play video games. Also since Spider-Man is probably one of my absolute favorite superheroes, I’m glad he was given this great game to center around him.
I absolutely LOVED all the references to the Raimi films, as they were my first exposure to Spider-Man and the reason I like superheroes nowadays. Loved how his mask got destroyed and looked just like how it did in Spider-Man 1, the part where Spider-Man tries to stop the train in the same way he does in Spider-Man 2, and the finger pointing he does in Spider-Man 3 that you can do to random civilians. Even just the fact that they finally put Mary Jane back into the story again after having Gwen be in so many of the films and tv shows after the films was awesome, she’s my favorite Spider-Man girlfriend. I don’t think the Raimi films have gotten the love they deserve and that’s why it made me so happy to see references to those films in the game. Made me feel like a kid again.
God, coming back to this video in 2021, and all I want is to feel what I felt playing this game in 2018, it was 18 hours of pure joy in the campaign, and I can't even count how many hours I have spent taking backpacks, stopping car chases, collecting pigeons, heck, I can't even count the hours I have spent just casually walking in the streets and hi fiving strangers, this game was an experience like I have never had before, it makes you embody spider-man and truly embraces what it means to be a hero. I just want insomniac to make spider-man 2 feel the same way
Agreed ❤️ and yes, the opponents always define the hero in theme and archetype. The hero and his main opponent have the same desire, but it’s the different ways they want to achieve it. They have different psychological and moral needs that define them as complex opposing characters.
I think the idea of the Peter Parker that appears in Spiderman Homecoming was that this is not the Spiderman we all know (yet). This Peter Parker is still a child who seeks to be a superhero, still does not understand that with great power comes great responsibility. We only see him assume his hero role at the end of the movie when he gets up from the rubble to chase the vulture because it was the right thing to do. He is in progress to become the hero we all know, the Spiderman of Insomniac already has years of experience. Marvel wants to develop this Spiderman slowly, and I'm excited to see that progress.
I loved Web of Shadow it was my favorite Spider-Man game, the interactions, and feeling that you actually make a difference in the story with the discussion you make. These thing made it so fun to just go around the city playing around or replying the game to unlock different ending (yeah there wasn't that many ending but it was the first game that did that I ever played so imagin my surprise and joy at that discovery.
I think holland’s spider man will grow up to be this game version of spidey...i mean its obvious.and also i feel him wanting to be an avenger is the teenager aspect of his character,i mean we all aspire to become somebody else during that age.As he grows up and get matured he would want to develop his own identity as we all feel like doing after a certain age.and i am very excited to see that..
You basically summed up what I was explaining to people in comment sections of Review videos for Spidey. This game is like the college version of the high school peter we got to know in spectacular Spider-man. Not only did they bring the best of the character into the Comics but they also fixed some things they did in the Comics! (looking at one more day Mephisto here) This game really deserves all the praise it gets and hopefully it will be the new Standard for spidey storys no matter if game, Comic, Cartoon or film.

I absolutely agree with you on this and this has been something I've been trying to convince my friends about from the get go that Spiderman PS4 is the best Spiderman story ever, and an accomplishment that other games, even non-superhero based ones, should take inspiration from. I just wish that the sequel under development lives up to the first one.

I'm playing the game right now. I bought it last week and I can't stop playing! I was struggling with the combat and swinging in the beginning but now it comes natural and I feel powerful. Such a wonderful game.
I think what people miss about Homecoming in Peter’s arc is that they see it very surface level. “Peter wants to be an avenger, then decides he doesn’t”. There’s so much more going on though. Peter already understands Uncle Ben’s responsibility speech by the time Tony comes around which is shown. What Peter doesn’t understand is that the responsibility of having those powers doesn’t automatically make you ready to help save the world. Sometimes you have to rely on yourself. It’s about helping the little guy first and foremost, then the big picture problem. He screws up because he’s trying to take on too much because he ALREADY feels like he’s responsible enough to be that kind of superhero iron man is. But in reality he has to learn who he is as a hero on his own and what that heroism means in terms of sacrifice. He could have let the vulture get away and make his “one last gig” but Peter is too good to let that happen. So he gives up on his chances with Liz and goes after him anyway. It’s the opposite of what happened with uncle Ben and his killer where Peter ignored his responsibility. And of course the best scene where he pushes the rubble off to prove that he believes in himself as a hero instead of others believing in him as a hero. It’s the ultimate feel good movie with my favorite fiction character, I love it.
That interpretation isn't at all comparable with the surface. He can't be doing this for fame and responsibility. He just wanted recognition. He literally thought about leaving his responsibilities at school and the crime in his neighborhood so he could move in with the avengers. His responsibility was alway second to what Tony thought. Which is why Tonys speech about Peter being worthy of the suit Tony gave him is his motivation for breaking out of the rubble.
Great video Browntable, this game is a mastepeice the perfect and the best interpetation of Spider-Man I've ever seen (yes just as good as the Spectacular Spider-Man version). Also I really love Aunt May in this game.
3:10 yeah, yeah, that's so true, sometimes I'm like okay I'm close to this objective, then the police radio says there's a robbery and I 180° just to stop that crime because it really make you feel you're saving actual people not just a random annoying encounter that is optional to take before continuing with the main campaign.

When I saw Spiderman Homecoming, I came out disappointed seeing an Iron Man Jr movie Then this game came out and showed how great Peter can do things on his own and doesn't need a sugar daddy
Ultimate Aunt May is a total boss lady. Of course she's overprotective of her teenage nephew because her husband died recently, and especially there's the danger of superheroes and villains everywhere. But DAMN, she put JJJ in his place and that's a win in my book. She could've beaten Thanos.
The closest you’ve seen shouldn’t be homecoming Spider-Man given the PS4 spider-man takes more cues from raimi’s character. The struggle of his dual life, the tragedy of him having to sacrifice the ones he loves to save the city, and the relationships he has with people as Peter, turning into villains of Spider-Man. Aunt may being a figure who gives advice when he needs it and always knowing about Spider-Man instead of homecoming’s walking in on Peter. And also that he is broke, truly broke instead of always being able to rely on tony stark funding
I think the thing that makes this game work the best is the complete trust from the Police for most of the game, he's been at it for so long that most of the cops have had positive encounters where he's saved their lives or downright stopped anyone coming to harm. They've spread positive word throughout the force and it gives this version of Peter one less thing to worry about because he has their trust and faith in him. Even if he loses, they empathise and understand that he had to make that sacrifice and take the fall
As much as I love the Raimi and MCU versions of Spider-Man, Insomniac's take is the definitive version fo me, even surpassing the Spectacular cartoon for me. The story is the best Spider-Man story I've seen in any adaptation, and the gameplay is fantastic. One of my favorite games of all time. God bless Insomniac.
Am i the only one who think that PS4 Spiderman retain a lot of postive element from the Holy Trinity Spidey I mean this version of Spiderman had Tom's Spidey intelligent, Andrew's Spidey physicall built and energetic nature, and Tobey's responsible personality
One of the highlights IMO whenever I look back at the experience is when The Sinister Six come out and beat the shit out of Spider-Man, and even though he was being beaten up, even though he was outnumbered, even though he was being overpowered, he tried his best to keep fighting them until he passed out, THAT'S SPIDER-MAN!
Probably the best review of the game I have watched. I watched a lot of interviews devs put out about what kind of experience they were trying to create before releasing the game and Insomniac seems to have achieved what they set out to do like a boss.
I don't have a PS4 (yet) but I feel Holland's interpretation is growing up to be this Spider-Man. *And I can't wait.* ..for Marvel's Spider-Man 2 and Far From Home (and beyond) (Saw the complete walkthrough via TheRadBrad in less than 2 days. Yeah, pigeon catching and all.)
Another great aspect is how the game is so far into his career that we’ve already got enough villains for the Sinister Six. There’s information about their backstories that fleshes them out, there are references to other heroes and villains (making the world feel bigger and not just as Spider-man being the only superhero in the entire world). We don’t need to see an origin story for every single villain (especially when they’re already so well known). And the ones we do get are because they’ve tie into the games story
Only problem in the game is it's too easy lol. I am about to 100% in spectacular difficulty. But, I will play it once again as the story itself is really awesome.
SPECTACULAR video!!! I agree with everything pointed out in here. Spider-Man PS4 is a masterpiece and it made me truly love Spidey once more, just like when I was 6, and saw Spider-Man for the first time, in the Raimi films. I loved this story so much, mainly because it was a human story and I genuinely felt for Spidey in this game. I laughed, I cheered and I cried, especially at the end. This is definitely the definitive version of Peter Parker. Can't wait to see him again, this time in the Avengers game by Square Enix, if he's even in it, or if he isn't gonna be replaced by new and generic Peter!!! :D

I’ve heard so many good reviews about this and love the dialogue and animation of it. And apparently the story is fantastic. Too bad I don’t play video games.
Also since Spider-Man is probably one of my absolute favorite superheroes, I’m glad he was given this great game to center around him.

I absolutely LOVED all the references to the Raimi films, as they were my first exposure to Spider-Man and the reason I like superheroes nowadays.
Loved how his mask got destroyed and looked just like how it did in Spider-Man 1, the part where Spider-Man tries to stop the train in the same way he does in Spider-Man 2, and the finger pointing he does in Spider-Man 3 that you can do to random civilians.
Even just the fact that they finally put Mary Jane back into the story again after having Gwen be in so many of the films and tv shows after the films was awesome, she’s my favorite Spider-Man girlfriend.
I don’t think the Raimi films have gotten the love they deserve and that’s why it made me so happy to see references to those films in the game. Made me feel like a kid again.

God, coming back to this video in 2021, and all I want is to feel what I felt playing this game in 2018, it was 18 hours of pure joy in the campaign, and I can't even count how many hours I have spent taking backpacks, stopping car chases, collecting pigeons, heck, I can't even count the hours I have spent just casually walking in the streets and hi fiving strangers, this game was an experience like I have never had before, it makes you embody spider-man and truly embraces what it means to be a hero. I just want insomniac to make spider-man 2 feel the same way
Agreed ❤️ and yes, the opponents always define the hero in theme and archetype. The hero and his main opponent have the same desire, but it’s the different ways they want to achieve it. They have different psychological and moral needs that define them as complex opposing characters.

Like The relationship of Doc oc and Peter in this game was phenomenal.
I think the idea of the Peter Parker that appears in Spiderman Homecoming was that this is not the Spiderman we all know (yet). This Peter Parker is still a child who seeks to be a superhero, still does not understand that with great power comes great responsibility. We only see him assume his hero role at the end of the movie when he gets up from the rubble to chase the vulture because it was the right thing to do. He is in progress to become the hero we all know, the Spiderman of Insomniac already has years of experience. Marvel wants to develop this Spiderman slowly, and I'm excited to see that progress.

I loved Web of Shadow it was my favorite Spider-Man game, the interactions, and feeling that you actually make a difference in the story with the discussion you make. These thing made it so fun to just go around the city playing around or replying the game to unlock different ending (yeah there wasn't that many ending but it was the first game that did that I ever played so imagin my surprise and joy at that discovery.

You basically summed up what I was explaining to people in comment sections of Review videos for Spidey. This game is like the college version of the high school peter we got to know in spectacular Spider-man. Not only did they bring the best of the character into the Comics but they also fixed some things they did in the Comics! (looking at one more day Mephisto here) This game really deserves all the praise it gets and hopefully it will be the new Standard for spidey storys no matter if game, Comic, Cartoon or film.

I absolutely agree with you on this and this has been something I've been trying to convince my friends about from the get go that Spiderman PS4 is the best Spiderman story ever, and an accomplishment that other games, even non-superhero based ones, should take inspiration from. I just wish that the sequel under development lives up to the first one.

I'm playing the game right now. I bought it last week and I can't stop playing! I was struggling with the combat and swinging in the beginning but now it comes natural and I feel powerful. Such a wonderful game.

I found myself playing this game for *HOURS* .
I’m basically playing every comic, movie, and show in this one game.
I think what people miss about Homecoming in Peter’s arc is that they see it very surface level. “Peter wants to be an avenger, then decides he doesn’t”. There’s so much more going on though. Peter already understands Uncle Ben’s responsibility speech by the time Tony comes around which is shown. What Peter doesn’t understand is that the responsibility of having those powers doesn’t automatically make you ready to help save the world. Sometimes you have to rely on yourself. It’s about helping the little guy first and foremost, then the big picture problem. He screws up because he’s trying to take on too much because he ALREADY feels like he’s responsible enough to be that kind of superhero iron man is. But in reality he has to learn who he is as a hero on his own and what that heroism means in terms of sacrifice. He could have let the vulture get away and make his “one last gig” but Peter is too good to let that happen. So he gives up on his chances with Liz and goes after him anyway. It’s the opposite of what happened with uncle Ben and his killer where Peter ignored his responsibility. And of course the best scene where he pushes the rubble off to prove that he believes in himself as a hero instead of others believing in him as a hero. It’s the ultimate feel good movie with my favorite fiction character, I love it.
That interpretation isn't at all comparable with the surface. He can't be doing this for fame and responsibility. He just wanted recognition. He literally thought about leaving his responsibilities at school and the crime in his neighborhood so he could move in with the avengers. His responsibility was alway second to what Tony thought. Which is why Tonys speech about Peter being worthy of the suit Tony gave him is his motivation for breaking out of the rubble.

Great video Browntable, this game is a mastepeice the perfect and the best interpetation of Spider-Man I've ever seen (yes just as good as the Spectacular Spider-Man version). Also I really love Aunt May in this game.

3:10 yeah, yeah, that's so true, sometimes I'm like okay I'm close to this objective, then the police radio says there's a robbery and I 180° just to stop that crime because it really make you feel you're saving actual people not just a random annoying encounter that is optional to take before continuing with the main campaign.

Ultimate Aunt May is a total boss lady. Of course she's overprotective of her teenage nephew because her husband died recently, and especially there's the danger of superheroes and villains everywhere. But DAMN, she put JJJ in his place and that's a win in my book. She could've beaten Thanos.
The closest you’ve seen shouldn’t be homecoming Spider-Man given the PS4 spider-man takes more cues from raimi’s character. The struggle of his dual life, the tragedy of him having to sacrifice the ones he loves to save the city, and the relationships he has with people as Peter, turning into villains of Spider-Man. Aunt may being a figure who gives advice when he needs it and always knowing about Spider-Man instead of homecoming’s walking in on Peter. And also that he is broke, truly broke instead of always being able to rely on tony stark funding

I think the thing that makes this game work the best is the complete trust from the Police for most of the game, he's been at it for so long that most of the cops have had positive encounters where he's saved their lives or downright stopped anyone coming to harm. They've spread positive word throughout the force and it gives this version of Peter one less thing to worry about because he has their trust and faith in him. Even if he loses, they empathise and understand that he had to make that sacrifice and take the fall
As much as I love the Raimi and MCU versions of Spider-Man, Insomniac's take is the definitive version fo me, even surpassing the Spectacular cartoon for me. The story is the best Spider-Man story I've seen in any adaptation, and the gameplay is fantastic. One of my favorite games of all time. God bless Insomniac.

One of the highlights IMO whenever I look back at the experience is when The Sinister Six come out and beat the shit out of Spider-Man, and even though he was being beaten up, even though he was outnumbered, even though he was being overpowered, he tried his best to keep fighting them until he passed out, THAT'S SPIDER-MAN!

Probably the best review of the game I have watched. I watched a lot of interviews devs put out about what kind of experience they were trying to create before releasing the game and Insomniac seems to have achieved what they set out to do like a boss.

Another great aspect is how the game is so far into his career that we’ve already got enough villains for the Sinister Six. There’s information about their backstories that fleshes them out, there are references to other heroes and villains (making the world feel bigger and not just as Spider-man being the only superhero in the entire world).
We don’t need to see an origin story for every single villain (especially when they’re already so well known). And the ones we do get are because they’ve tie into the games story
Only problem in the game is it's too easy lol. I am about to 100% in spectacular difficulty. But, I will play it once again as the story itself is really awesome.

SPECTACULAR video!!! I agree with everything pointed out in here. Spider-Man PS4 is a masterpiece and it made me truly love Spidey once more, just like when I was 6, and saw Spider-Man for the first time, in the Raimi films. I loved this story so much, mainly because it was a human story and I genuinely felt for Spidey in this game. I laughed, I cheered and I cried, especially at the end. This is definitely the definitive version of Peter Parker. Can't wait to see him again, this time in the Avengers game by Square Enix, if he's even in it, or if he isn't gonna be replaced by new and generic Peter!!! :D
