Love your videos!💚
@KevinChee I have autism and so for me that kind of face that they do confused me a lot and it wasn’t something that affected my click ability. For me I click on someone based on the title because I can understand that. Although with my own thumbnails, I do try to give a kind of emotion. I like the fact that you don’t use those kind of faces and that you just use your normal expression. You definitely seem a lot more friendly and more like an AI,bot. I’m not that you ever really have you’ve got a very friendly face that’s easy enough to understand and that’s coming from an autistic person. Your voice is also easy to listen to. It’s not harsh it’s not monotone it’s not boring. And you explain something simply for a person who finds it difficult. I remember saying to you on your last video that you remind me of Nate, you and Nate are easy to digest for people like Me, who are autistic, and who need sometimes the simple, basic explanation along with sometimes a demonstration. you’re also not overly flashy you’re simple and not over the top.
Whatever the big UA-cam gurus are telling you to do, do the opposite.
Yup, I unsubscribed all of them
A lot of them seem to have insider connections to UA-cam employees that only want their company to make money off of actual content creators.
Sounds like a conspiracy!
Especially since they all know each other pretty much trying to steer everyone wrong so they can stay on top 🤷♂️🤡
@@shake_shells11 😂 i did the same thing too especially think media , I never for once trust their advice. They are just there to put out videos and sell their products along the line
Nice video - it's not just a theory, that's what is happening on all six of my channels. Over 10,000 videos uploaded since 2007 yet it now feels like those videos count for next to nothing unless I'm constantly uploading. Same goes for other channels I speak to. Also, it's not new, it's been happening since July 2022 (around a year after shorts were introduced). Instead of being rewarded for past content you now have to work until you drop, no wonder so many og UA-camrs are quitting.
Terrible recipe for burnout. I was just venting about this.
Coming up with a plan and strategy to divert audience out of UA-cam and into your email list is the way I would go. These platforms are great but I want some control over the audience I built all these years.
@@KevinChee yes, I’ve been working on building my email list. I love being be able to communicate with my audience at any given moment with an email and share what’s on my mind or sell them something.
You're right. I also notice that I only get views whenever I upload new videos. And it doesn't last long. Every time I upload a new video, I get a boost of views for about 2 days. After that, it's silence.
Yeah, that sounds about right. After that, it is on to the next video then rinse and repeat. Sounds exhausting tbh
What a lot of youtubers do now is just getting a monetized channels in viral-npc marketplace and do automation. It works because i do it too
smart tbh
😯
Your videos are always so helpful and downright some of the most useful content out there. Thank you for what you do!
I have to say on a personal channel note, that up to about 2 months ago my channel was getting between 15k-18k impressions, and then some change to the algorithm happened, and now it's back getting just a couple hundred. But my shorts are now getting all the views. I've been so absolutely frustrated, that I had to talk myself out of making a video this week titled "I kinda lowkey want to watch UA-cam crumble". They have become the poster child for cooperate lead and managed, and it's time for the rise of a new long form video platform. I know that was just said in anger, but I welcome the change personally. UA-cam doesn't seem to care. And I can only take so many leaps from a in video ad to be followed up by a mandatory un-skippable ad. That's why I left tv in the first place morons.
Ok end rant!
Shorts is getting all the attention and rightfully so. People want vertical format these days and UA-cam has to change to stay relevant. I don't blame them but I do hope they find a way to separate long form viewers and Short viewers.
Welcome back kevin ..i think what’s really good about your channel is the focus is YOU and your videos are really authentic ..However for the bigger picture i think you are onto something with what you are saying! I do think shorts brings in an audience that’s not really interested what we have to say rather just a quick random doze of gossip/ entrainment , then they are onto the next short ..will that build a community that’s right for our channel ..no ..not the right one for our videos no so yes well said my friend …I guess all we can do is adapt and see what happens i guess but well pointed out
I am afraid at the growth of YT shorts and how much focus YT puts on it. At some point, everyone will be here to binge shorts entertainment. Creators will no longer be the focus and that scares me. But as you said, we can't predict the future so we will wait and see what happens. Perhaps this becomes a gap and a new platform rises where it is more content creator focused :)
I watch all your new stuff, I rarely read the titles, I just see you in the thumb nail and I click it. The algorithm is always showing me your content even stuff I have watched already.
Maybe my next thumbnail should just be my entire face!
That is exactly how I think. I don’t care about the title nor thumbnail when I already like a creator.
I’m the same way 😂
I’m the same way 😂
My views have dropped off a cliff while my videos have only gotten better over time. Starting last year I regularly got tens of thousands of views and.now I barely crack a thousand if I'm lucky. It's soup destroying
Very annoying indeed.
Shorts broke my channel completely. I used to get great traction and fantastic new members to my community, but shorts brought in toxic people, who has NEVER engaged with my long form content. It's sad, because i worked hard on my channel, and it's currently ruined, actually almost dead.
Thanks for warning us. I was about to do shorts but I probably won't
@@WeaklyStars My biggest pleasure. Please, don't do shorts. If you want plenty of subscribers, in a relative short amount of time, then go for it, because that, you will get without much effort. But don't expect those subscribers to watch a single one of your long form content. Shorts literally destroyed my hard work that i built for two years, please don't let it ruin yours too🙏.
I heard this happening a lot. Shorts subscribers don't watch your long Form. If your subscribers don't watch your long form, the algorithm thinks your long form is bad.
@@gersonl Exactly. If i could do UA-cam over again, I'd completely leave out short form content, entirely. It's also created a society that has an attention span of 10 seconds. If your 10 seconds isn't better than the guy next to you, your shorts doesn't even get views. It's the downfall of UA-cam
@@WeaklyStars if you do shorts put them on a separate channel they messed up my channel as well and I deleted them
I already quit mine.
The problem is when something is able to make money you get everyone and their grandma jumping the bandwagon until it becomes so saturated it's not even worth doing anymore.
Then u lost
It’s not too saturated, you just suck
Dude. You had 29 videos. Do at least 100 before you quit. From what I saw, they were awesome.
Your channel is awesome!
yes, that’s how the world works. there’s opportunity on youtube …. incredible opportunity …
Hi Kevin, this is an interesting perspective. I've seen many UA-camrs sharing how UA-cam only pushes their channel whenever they have new uploads but none showed data like you did.
I'm also wary of Shorts. I don't want UA-cam to turn into another Tiktok although I do upload long form videos on Tiktok too.
Not sure what the YT team is thinking but I hope they continue separating the shorts and long form algorithms as they can co-exist on one platform. As always, thanks for the video Kevin.
How's re-uploading long form videos on TikTok working for you? Does TikTok accept videos that are more than 60 secs now?
@@KennyEatsWorld I don't think my content is meant for TikTok anyways!
@@KevinChee Reuploading long form on Tiktok from UA-cam can get you banned for unoriginal content but not the other way around.
Yes, the do, I can upload up to 30 minutes on desktop and 10 minutes from the app. Landscape content accepted too now.
@@KevinChee certainly not. your content is uniquely UA-cam
No, please don't upload daily shorts! It will destroy you channel! It lowers the channel wide average watchtime and gets the wrong type of subscribers.
UA-cam is pushing us against the wall
I am over 1 month subscribed to your channel but this is only the second time you appeared on my feed .
You have good information my friend 💪😀
I need to upload more often!
Kavin, here's my experience and advice: never post shorts on your main channel. While they may garner more views and subscribers initially, the earnings from millions of short views pale in comparison to a long-format video with only a few thousand views. Moreover, subscribers gained through shorts typically don't engage with long-format content. Despite this, UA-cam will continue to show your long videos to them, resulting in more impressions but a lower click-through rate. Consequently, UA-cam interprets this as poor performance, leading to the decline of your long-form videos. I experienced this firsthand, recognized it early on, and ceased uploading shorts to my main channel
I did do a 60 days Shorts challenge before and, coincidentally, it ended up giving me my first 100k view for my long form video. Maybe that's change now and a lot riskier.
That's what happened to my channel. I was getting most of my subscribers from short form content and my CTR ends up being Crap in the first 48 hours and maybe after 3-4 days maybe a video gets a bit more attention but doesn't get any impressions after a week anymore...
Versatility, talents, transparency, creativity. You are the total package.💪👏👏🤛
Thanks for the compliment 🙂
This thumbnail is awesome man and great video! It’s annoying YT doesn’t push out a video unless it was uploaded recently even if it is a good video
Yeah, I know right. Maybe part of their Shorts algorithm got caught in long form algorithm. I hope they can clearly separate long form viewers and Shorts viewers. Here's to hoping
@@KevinChee I agree, it really makes no sense. Makes me not want to be consistently create videos if I only get views by uploading more frequently. I feel like that will cause me burnout again.
I have definitely experienced a boost when I upload a new video. Great insights!
UA-cam is so strange!
My views dropped to like 1/5 of what it used to be its like they want to promote short so much long form get ignored
Mine have dropped by more than half.
That's exactly what it is even bigger channels views have dropped significantly
Shorts might be the end of us all. Good for UA-cam, not so great for creators
Mine have dropped from 2 thousand at least per vid to 1-20 views
Do any of you guys know what is happening?
Hey! Wow this makes a whole lot of sense. I logged into Twitter a few times this month and noticed many people were complaining to UA-cam that their content hasn't been getting as many views as it used to. Then i also noticed that UA-cam has been deleting channels like crazy 😮
I haven't heard about either of those. But then again, I'm hardly on Twitter lol..
Well said. Love your channel and your authentic informative approach. All the best to all of us content creators!
Thank you my friend
8:30 I agree that whenever you upload new videos it will boost the channel. And in the same time, there are a lot of channels grow without uploading videos frequently.
UA-cam wants to keep viewers on the platform and there are already a lot of good old videos that prove that they are effective in holding attention.
I did some research about it. I took old channels that growing without videos at all or with 1 video in 1-2 months maximum
I think engagement leads to growth. The longer people stay on your video, that signals to UA-cam that your video is high quality and thus will push your videos more. If people bounce quickly then UA-cam won't push your videos into people's feeds.
Engagement usually comes with a long standing channel, channels that have built their reputation and credibility. Channels that grows consistently are usually the ones who have that few videos that just works. It may look easy but it takes lots of time and effort to get to where they are. It is good and bad, good if you have built up your channel to that stage where things just works but bad if you're just starting out.
@@KevinChee yeah. I have multiple channels that work easily because there is a ton of work and 1-2 years already. But starting from the beginning is always the 6-9 month minimum
yeah, because not all topics are the same... some videos are seasonal, some are keeping up only with trends which change anytime, some are making evergreen contents and some are controversial (however controversies fade away so the topic or video dies down too)@@Max_RPM
Agree, I was wondering the same (as what you say at the end)
What are your plans?
I can safely say that in my experience this is not the case. The compound effect keeps kicking in. At around 35k subs I started getting much more views, like 10k at least within 24 hrs. One video 2 weeks ago had racked up more than 600k views and still getting around 1k every hour or so .You need to keep posting but twice a week is plenty. A good video can have a 3 month life span. So just keep going for good content. 10 - 25k was slow for me too bro. You will spike again but next time will be much bigger :) keep going!
I hope you are right buddy
It sounds like you have to post at an Incredible high rate UNTIL you get to the stage that you are in. Also, most people don’t reach 35k subs so that is even more disappointing
Thank you so much for sharing your research and insights!
Thanks for watching
Yeah, I've given up recently. I will only make videos now if I feel like it, which will be rarely, if ever.
I was uploading daily and initially it took off like a rocket but then it just declined and kept declining and it sucked all the motivation I had left to do it daily.
Have you thought about trying other platforms? TikTok seems to be growing very well (although the content isn't my style)
Luck 🍀 is a factor too…in my opinion.
Luck plays a big role in any UA-cam channel's growth, but, UA-cam gurus just refuse to accept it :)
This point
Kevin, great insights. I've been serious on UA-cam for 2 years, having had a channel I did nothing with for many many years. My growth was fantastic going into 2024. But, in February, things took a huge dip. I publish 1 long form per week, every Sunday. My long forms are cars and DIY and very evergreen in nature, growing slowly and probably not "viral" worthy given the topics. My UA-cam shorts are quick videos I shoot on my phone, nearly all car-related. I have had lots of success with them and the past month, lucky if I break 1,000 views. I publish a short daily. So, IMHO, Google is playing with the algo for the past month .. I see no correlation with "fresh" content daily sending me more views. My channel maintains a healthy viewership per day, but spreads out among a lot of content I have. My entire focus is an evergreen-type channel that is consistent and I'm trying to avoid "trends" that make stuff pop and fade weeks later. Thoughts?
I think your daily shorts helps 'push' your content and channel a little, although, that's just a theory. I think as long as you are posting then you should be ok. It's just a tad bit annoying that we only get a push when we launch a new video. Like this video here that is gaining some views, I suddenly got quite a fair bit of new subs because of this video!
So far the algorithm hasn't even tested most of my videos, I don't even get impressions. Most of my views come from reddit and some people there seem to like the content. But my content is pessimist philosophy, so maybe it's not liked by the algorithm.
viewers on UA-cam can be hard to predict
Gotta agree with the shorts…I post mostly long form and have a fantastic community built around those videos. Just posted a short that went super viral for me. 99% of viewers were not my subscribers and the comments were just flat out mean…glad it got traction but the community is missing in the comments so I’m not sure it helped my channel (other than make me some money)…
Imagine the money made had that same viral video was long form.
That's the direction YT seems to be heading - Shorts. If it keeps viewers on the platform, YT will go with it. I guess in a way it keeps YT 'fresh' but it is not looking good for creators.
Thank you for being an authentic creator. While I am still “new” in this journey, I’m not going to let them detour me! I hope we can both keep pushing forward with our channels
let's go us!
I can tell you a few things about shorts and how to strategically use them to pull in the "right" audience.. Otherwise you are right, they will be shown to the wrong crowd. Thanks for the great video.
Thanks for watching
Please share :)
I noticed a sharp decline in views on all three of my channels that started maybe four months ago, which has persisted.
3 channels? That's crazy, I can barely handle 1
YT must decide what it is and not imitate Instagram, Tiktok etc. Yes, following trends may be useful but following trends is endless. We need YT to be YT again where it is YT, not Tiktok wannabe or Instagram wannabe😅😅
YT needs to expand what they have built with YT and innovate instead of imitate
You're right about shorts and it's always good to hear you tell it how you think it..
I like your analysis on views when you upload I figured the same and I'm a new channel which definitely needs to upload regularly.
As always cheers Kevin!
Yeap, my channel grew again when this video was launched about a week ago. It grew for 2-3 days and it flatlined now. I am getting kinda tired of this honestly. Part of me feel like Shorts can help with maintaining that momentum but Shorts is such a risk to long form channels and it is causing me to hold back.
@@KevinChee I'm trying shorts too but really long form is what I'm about. Only 3 videos and 3 shorts so far so will let you know what happens when I manage to upload regularly. Fairly soon if all goes to plan..
Interesting insights! Do you think it's dependent on the type of video content you're creating as well? I'm curious about where most of your views come from, is it via browse features? I wonder if experimenting with more searchable content would change anything. Also for me, any drop in views is a reminder to make sure I'm prioritizing my email list so that I don't have to rely on views alone to reach my ideal audience & generate sales.
90% of my views and subs are from browse features (getting pushed by the algo). I just think YT has evolved so much till the point where people just don't search anymore, they are being fed with videos that they don't even know exist. It sounds like they are now searching for 2 things, the youtube channel or a solution to a particular problem (which could be once off). Maybe as inflation soars and life gets tougher, people will start searching for ways to make money on the side. There will definitely be ups and downs, and like you said, when UA-cam is on a downhill slope, it is time to focus on other aspects of the business that is going up.
Great insight Kevin in another great and informative video. I kind of agree with your analysis here, speaking for myself for a minute... despite trying to be consistent on UA-cam with a busy life style at the moment, I can’t help but feel like my videos only get pushed out the more I upload newer videos. Either that or people just aren't as interested as before on content unless they’re fast pace, overly stimulating or one off kind of videos. For example, videos like Mr. Beast who I don’t actually mind once in a while or AI voice-overs.
I guess my point is, the demographic might be changing which in turn affects views and the types of content people are interested in watching. As for shorts, they might be good for keeping things fresh but what people don’t realize is that their profitability rate is so low for the amount of work that goes into making them… so, good for some viewers but bad for creators.
right on point. to add my 2 cents, Shorts aren't really helping either in terms of creating the viewers creators want. 60 seconds of highly edited video, with transitions and effects almost every second - it is bound to create viewers with short attention span. I know that's what's happening to my kids, MrBeast's content is so highly edited that kids needs to be stimulated every second and they get bored with videos like mine. I can't even begin to imagine what education is going to be like in the future
@@KevinChee I agree! I've heard of shorts creators struggling to convince viewers to watch their long form videos as well. I guess viewers shorter attention span adds to the problem as well when you think about it; I honestly don't see a fix here besides adapting lol.
You've been doing a test, no wonder the thumbnails and titles have been different. Thanks for sharing. Also, as you have mentioned before, it's important that we use YT as a platform for other plans.
UA-cam is ever changing. We should be changing as well to adapt. Never assume UA-cam will stay the same forever
Thank you for this!
You're welcome
In terms of views dying down after a handful of days/a week.
I wonder what would happen if you targeted search Kevin? I just had one of my first videos take rank in search and it’s now driving hundreds of views a day. I wonder what will happen if I’m able to publish a couple more videos like this? Confidence is high that I will based on my track record in the past. It’s not easy but it’s worth it.
I have tried a lot of search based content before my channel took off to the next phase where it is now. In my experience, search is good for small channels but being recommended is still the key to growth. 90% of my current growth is attributed to 2 videos after 2 years of creating videos consistently, and those two got pushed hard by UA-cam for a couple of months.
There is something I want to try though - launch a video that is aimed towards getting pushed (like this video) and let it rake in views for a couple of days. When it slows down, update the thumbnail and title to make it more searchable for long term views.
Of course, the content has to remain relevant to both these scenarios so planning is a must.
Honestly and personally, I mostly pay attention on titles, not just thumbnails.
titles creates the emotion. that's why a strong news headline works!
You are so right! Expecialy your last sentence
Thank you very much
Great analysis. Before Nate Black left Channel Makers, he made a video analyzing view trajectory and found that on average his views topped off after 4 days. That's a pattern I've seen in my own content too, with a few exceptions. I do roughly monthly uploads and thankfully I have a different primary purpose for my videos (teaching a balanced perspective on the Bible and society) than growing subscriber counts and views, although those are important to me. Also I'm blessed that my view counts are rising over time as my channel grows, which is wonderful to experience for now.
I think what most content creators need to do these days is to make full use of the viewers we attract. Relying on the subs and views is not sustainable so if you have a different purpose for being on UA-cam then even the slightest increase in new viewers helps.
@@KevinChee makes sense, thanks. Could you explain what you mean by "make full use of the viewers we attract"?
@@TheThinkersBible if you have plans to use UA-cam as a platform to achieve your goal then each viewer you attract is a win. It doesn't matter if it 1 extra viewer or 10 extra viewer. So, make full use of the opportunity we get for gaining a new viewer and share our values.
@@KevinChee thank you. I agree 100%.
I hate how views plateau only after a few days. It makes no sense to me. Maybe if it was a gradual decrease, maybe, but it will plateau in just an hour.
I think more people are back to work now, so they are not watching UA-cam as much as they did a few years ago. I noticed that my views go up significantly on the weekends and in the evenings.
Go where the viewers take us I would say!
I have noticed this shift in UA-cam too, especially in shorts. Previously, up until November 2023, shorts views came so easily, but now I am lucky if it goes to even a fraction of what it was. I am seeing more results when I started focusing more on consistent longform and made more minimalist and simple thumbnails.
Long form is still the more sustainable way imo. But there are so many new creators jumping onto Shorts for the quick views and subs. Not to mention, UA-cam pushes Shorts more than long form. It doesn't help us 1 bit.
When i use shorts its only to link the main video and use the shorts as a "Video Trailor" of sorts. This is also always just cut from the main video as a little windows into what the episode will be about. Takes maybe 5 minutes & its a good way to get some uploads in & extra views to an older video I have while working on a new one.
Edit: I will never make a video again specifically to be a short, it will only ever be using this method until something changes.
Thanks as always good sir
I get most of my subs from shorts. I link a long vid to it. I only get 1-10 views to my long that way but watch time is watch time I supose
Hell yeah! That sounds great to me!@@WaywardZombie
Yeah, I tried that but it didn't work for me, my videos get cut off in a strange way. Also, I dislike the shorts editing feature in the app lol
Oh no no, use Opus Clips. I would never use the UA-cam version for editing@@KevinChee
Dude you just spit a lot of gems here. I subscribed!
I can feel gems in my mouth
Great tips for my small channel. I keep on losing views and videos are not performing like usual but I can do this. Thank you 🌞🌞
all the best
Hey Kevin, thanks, I feel like I learned a few things here.
Definitely have to think about my thumbnails and titles...
By the way, do you do TikTok?
I tried to repurpose them on TikTok but didn't work so well. I mean, who wants to learn about UA-cam on TikTok am I right? Plus, I feel like TikTok viewers are always after the entertainment side of things rather than education. Their videos are easier to produce though but yeah, I am not an entertainer as you can see.
Why is it that we already know, but refuse to accept LOL 0:55
haha, facts man
This is scary info
But with consistency and always improving you can make it ❤
I know we will make it one day
I hope I'm wrong, I hope it is just that time of the year. We'll see.
I agree with you on this. On this channel at least views have dropped significantly as well as impresions. I used to get 1-2k impresions in the first 48h now the videos get only a few hundred and then it slowly dies out. In the past i saw constant impressions given by YT to my videos, but not anymore. For surely the algo is changing
Algo changes based on viewers as well so probably viewers aren't on YT as often as they do. Either that or UA-cam is pushing Shorts way too much
@@KevinChee i have experienced low views on shorts also. I guess that less people on are YT but also I see a few other channels that exploded recently, so I really dono
Wow. If it's true, the future looks bleak. Ain't nobody got time to push content constantly on a daily basis. We have to work a real job. At least, most of us.
nah …. the future is amazing. seriously … everyday, new creators are breaking out. decide to be one of them …
Just do what you love and the money will come. Let's go!
Works well for full-time influencers but part-timers, not so much I would say. Having said that, there's always a gap when things change so we need to learn to adapt, change and find a way that works for us. Planning is key
@@BriangjohnsonTvabsolutely love your outlook and vibe. Just subbed 🌟
Try more evergreen titles in topics that are not saturated yet.
thanks for the tip
Totally agree on shorts and I know I need to upload regularly to keep up momentum. Even as a new channel I can see the graph peaking and levelling off if I don't upload.
Keep up the good work Kevin and keep telling it how it is..
Does this exhaust you?
@@KevinChee yes I struggle to record, edit, upload and do a thumbnail regularly. I guess this is why people bang out shorts every day?
Maybe we should sell out and try it? Lol
My views completely fell off. I feel like the algorithm is shafting my channel, despite being super consistent with 2 uploads a week and working on my packaging. I'm sick of those UA-cam gurus selling bullshit: no, you won't grow your channel to 100k, 10k, or even 1k subs in a few months, unless you are extremely lucky and you're already skilled... Just a rant. It takes a long time, but I love it and I'm sure it's worth it.
it is not a rant, it is a fact. Luck plays a huge role when it comes to UA-cam, but when it does happen, you can get exponential growth and it'll take you to the next level. Its just sad that we do not know when that can happen and I am convinced no one knows a way to trigger it.
Second. Sir can I ask something, I started youtube as a hobby showcasing my fields of interest is it okay not to niche down do you have a video on that?
if it is a hobby then do whatever you enjoy. It will no longer be a hobby once you start focusing too much on subs and views.
They just want people to publish more shorts and then add their full video under related videos , it's kinda bad because small creators don't stand a chance when even the shorts stick at 1 view total 😅
UA-cam doesn't want to lose to TikTok
Great vid as usual Kevin, but I was
wondering if you could help me on something I was wondering.
If UA-cam mostly boost your views when you upload a video, do you think that daily uploading would favorise an even bigger exponential growth?
I feel like it should; UA-cam also want to win the vertical battle against TikTok and Instagram, so do you think that it would promote more long format videos of the creators that makes a lot of shorts?
I don't think UA-cam promotes long form if your Shorts is taking off. In fact, they would promote your Shorts even more to viewers because they want you to help build up their Shorts content and hopefully win the whole vertical format war. I haven't tried daily uploads before with long form nor will I, it is just too tiring and I don't have that many content.
Hey bro, can you tell is growing a UA-cam channel with evergreen videos is better than hoping on trends, which one do you think is better, everyone is saying to hope on trends to grow faster are they right?
I do a bit of both. They both have their own strength and weakness. Trends builds your channel faster (if picked up by the algorithm) but has no longevity. Evergreen is slow but can outperform trends in the long run. It all depends on what your niche is as well.
Thank you for the information and motivation to help continue with my channel. 😊❤
You are so welcome!
I understand your concerns but that’s why there’s 2 types of content as I understood, the momentum ones and the ones who bring constant views just like yt search or ever green ones, so you have to plan your content to be made some for evergreen and others for momentum or spikes
I have seen a new way these days - launch a momentum one, let it build up for a few days, then change the thumbnail and title to an evergreen one for long term discoverability.
@@KevinChee that’s a cool one, never heard it before, but you still need it to be highly attractive to browse and suggest traffic source, hmmm
With my channel it went different than yours.
Last year I uploaded every weekend, but I took a 6-week break in January. What happened is that most of my previous video's got promoted instead of the new video. So my old video's get more views now. So I'll upload not every weekend anymore, as it's very exhausting.
Also, my video's get more views than I have subscribers. Regarding shorts, at my channel they are sneak previews and redirect to the long form video. This boosted the long form video's also. I hope this helps. 💖💖
Sounds like you're on to something!
This video came at the right time! Yes, I agree that YT is becoming the new Television, TikTok is the old UA-cam, and censorship is going to be mad crazy!!
and we all know what happened to TV!
@@KevinChee Yup!!!
I always learn something from your perspectives Kevin thankyou again for your video 📸
Thank you my friend. Hope you're doing fine in Sydney (if you are still there). The weather has been insane.
@@KevinChee yes thanks always still in Sydney I live at Neutral Bay not far from the Coles Supermarket if you know the area. Good points about less views etc. I think some of my longform videos have done well and others - well I'd probably played around with the titles and thumbnails too much and broken their discoverablity . I might do what you've said in your prior video about using a fiver person to come up with the thumbnail and editing as I might be too attached to my creative output to make it work the way it should work.
I don't think YT will go and push shorts. Advertisers will pay only for long form video content, not for shorts.
Also I think posting to community tab will push smaller channel more in the future.
Actually, advertisers are paying for shorts and long form now. YT has been trying to attract advertisers to Shorts. I guess they do have a good business case, advertise on videos with millions of views or thousands of views? Advertisers will be attracted to the millions (I know I will) but let's hope they figure out that ROI is not as good as long form.
agreed, but ROI is not that good as you mentioned, you can't put a 10 or 15 second ad you can't close on a short :D also, you see, this video has the view count! :)) thumbnail and also the topic is working :)@@KevinChee
Of course part of it has to be market saturation. I mean that's pretty much the big picture here. Just so so much competition and options. Even humongous channels like Good Mythical Morning (Rhet and Link) used to get something like 2 million views PER video. Now even though the content is the same, or even better and more refined, they average about 212k per daily episode. Down from 2 mill. Maybe UA-cam should consider raising the payout again. If a large Channel with a huge number of followers gets 212k, then it seems like the average person would get 1k based on this new situation.
It is a case by case basis. I think it is natural for views to die down due to audience's interest and I can't blame them. Channels need to keep things fresh and it is not easy tbh, unless you're a tech channel where the products you review are always fresh. I used to watch Graham Stephan a lot but I've stopped for a few months now because I lost interest as well (even though I am still sub). It is not easy to keep viewers entertained I suppose. It is like watching a TV show, season 1 may be top of the world but season 2 drags it down and season 3 completely lost their viewers.
Wow this was really interesting. I thought UA-cam could become more passive but your stats and there was another UA-cam who said their views declined over the year not posting. Sounds like they still want you posting a lot to maintain views :/
Yeah. The whole ‘you can take a break’ thing isn’t exactly true. You can take breaks but don’t take too long. Running a UA-cam channel is like running your own business, you can’t go away for too long. But it is possible to take yourself out of the business and still have it run if we are smart enough
Thanks!
you're welcome
Great input. Also, if YT shorts is where UA-cam wants their platform to focus on, its monetization in that particular thing is much less than what TikTok just recently unveiled for theirs. Though to qualify for TikTok is more challenging, creating just over one minute of.video is more easier on the psyche of the creator if the potential to make.more is better than what UA-cam has to offer.
The thing I hate about TikTok and Shorts is we only start to see a significant amount of money if we hit millions of views. In theory, it sounds easy as we kept seeing content creators hit those goals. However, in my experience, most TikTok and Shorts creators hardly hit a thousand views, let alone millions.
Brilliant content dude. I appreciate your insights
Thank you
Kevin....it could be that your niche is growing stale and out of favor. You could change things up in terms of content by producing more creative as opposed to analytical content. The verdict is likely out. One needs to possess much charisma with tremendous unique knowledge in order to thrive within this environment if they are not willing to put a budget toward specialized features. UA-cam is now mature enough whereby folks have drawn reasonable conclusions without needing your insight.
I probably will if I am full time on this, otherwise, not so much I would say.
I started this channel but I’m not sure if this type of content can be monetised
Yeah not too sure myself. Seems like yours is focusing on Shorts mainly.
Hi Kevin, I really enjoy your videos! I was wondering if you have considered live streaming? That is another way to build an audience. I just started doing it recently and really enjoy it. I delayed for months, but if you're considering it, I recommend just giving it a shot. Thanks for all your UA-cam tips!
Thanks and no I have not consider live streaming. Too afraid and not too sure what I can cover. I know UA-cam is pushing live streaming too with the recent release of live streaming in the app. I say if you enjoy it, then do it. It looks like 1 of your live streaming videos is getting fantastic views
@@KevinChee I understand it can be a little scary at first, but usually to get over some plateau we need to do something scary :) As for what to talk about, you can talk about the same subjects as your recent videos and give the audience a chance to interact, or even discuss what you have currently scripted for a future video. Just an idea.
It seems like many more people are on TikTok now. I just started a channel over there and my channel grew VERY fast!! And even kids whom are around 12 years old are building TikTok channels and got large followings. So, while UA-cam is still ok (minus their weird algorithms), TikTok seems to be where it's at now!!
I do agree TikTok is growing faster but it is mainly catered towards entertainment. I'm not in this game to grow channels fast or gain large following, I'm in this game to build a business with the followings. As of this stage, I still don't see how TikTok works in that sense but I'm sure it will be a huge problem for YT once TikTok figures it out.
TikTok is catered towards EVERYTHING!! It's not just entertainment. Maybe in the past it was just entertainment. But, not anymore! It has become more and more like UA-cam. Like UA-cam, it's a place to post videos. It can be on whatever topic you want. And I'd say as of now, it's one of THE BEST places on the planet for growing/promoting a business since so many people are on there. It IS one of UA-cam's biggest competitors! UA-cam is good. But, don't just stay on one platform. In starting a business, don't be like BlockBuster video where they failed to stay current. Go where they people are at! Do both TikTok AND UA-cam. For example in my experience on TikTok, I've developed a following for my music AND some of the games I created fairly quickly. It was following that I never thought I'd get and it came much FASTER and robust than here on UA-cam. It's why I'm glad I do both. And you could gain and/or conduct your business as fast or as slow or at whatever pace you want. It's up to you! Anyway, if you want to grow/promote a business (especially involving videos or something somewhat similar to UA-cam), then you should definitely be on TikTok too. Just saying!! @@KevinChee
I just decided to go back to the old school way of YouTubing, I don't even design a thumbnail now as I kept exhausting myself design after design after design and so on, no design seemed to work despite having them designed by professionals (or so they say), so what I do now is just choose 1 of the 3 randomly generated thumbnails we get during the upload process, and to make things better, doing this boosted my views and engagement by QUITE a LOT!!
I suck at titles, so I'm just gonna keep mine simple and straight to the point of my content.
So many, too many small channels are all jumping on the "monetization" bandwagon, and more are trying to fit on such a wagon, I was one of them, but after seeing the shit storm that the platform has become, and seeing how sad of a place it's become to try and genuinely grow, I didn't just get off the bandwagon, I leaped off it 80's action movie styles, and watched this horrible looking bandwagon disappear out of my sight for good, meaning, I'm going back to how UA-cam used to be which is just making content for enjoyment and NOT being part of this whole hype of overacting, challenges, being overly enthusiastic, monetization, chasing trends, chasing big influencers, and so on.
I'm done with all of that, old school is the way to go, and it's not just me that's going this direction too.
good for you my friend
I was just thinking about taking a similar route with my UA-cam channel. Because it's surely exhausting to keep chasing the algorithm, and the money, the trends, the big fish in the field. It's damn exhausting. I made a decision the other day to slow down and just go back to making videos the way I used to. Because all these "rules" aren't working anymore. It's like UA-cam is suddenly a game of luck, to say the least.
@@doreennekesaofficial I recommend it, especially with the way UA-cam is nowadays, it's a shit show that should never have gone the way it did, but it did, all the tips and advice on how to grow become redundant pretty quickly because the platform is evolving rapidly, and it's very tiring to try and keep up, it's very much a game of luck, the algorithm could be your bestie one time, then throw your channel under the bus the next, it's a very fickle place and it's just not worth burning out over.
I started my channel a few months ago as my maternity leave project. Hoping I’m able to get successful with to be monetized 😩
All the best :)
Views dropped significantly? That might explain my low views on my other channel. I've been wondering what was going on and I did sense something going on. Thanks for bringing this to my attention.
Yeah, steady decline since Dec I think. Hopefully its just a seasonal thing
Great content!
Thank you
Keep post and love what you do
Thank you
I think people are craving a different type of UA-camr. Hmmm who could it be? 😏
Probably Post and Ghost
Love you dude! You always bring amazing content and you are very kind. YT needs more creators like you!@@KevinChee
If you are going to experiment with shorts, I would recommend doing it on a separate channel. I’ve seen others talk about this. I prefer watching long form content on UA-cam.
I did do a 60 days Shorts challenge before on this channel and, coincidentally, it ended up giving me my first 100k view for my long form video. Maybe that's change now and a lot riskier
I have one yt channel that follows this trajectory and one that does not.
did you see any difference in the 2 channels?
"shorts is big money for youtube"
Exactly. Not the creator. Having your channel pushed only on uploads is extremely discouraging and exhausting.
The payout for shorts is way too little per view. The only way I can see this change is if advertisers are not advertising as much on Shorts due to lack of conversion. It has to be changed at the business level.
@@KevinChee of course it's paid too little per view. As it should. 99% of all shorts are uploaded with little to no work involved. If the payout were higher, the already screwed up algorithm and feeds would just be filled with worse sub standard stupid content and everyone would do it. They need to just separate the shorts feed all together from long form content.
Dude, its all about keeping it real now. UA-cam keeps evolving, Fortunate for me as I hate those generic Mr Beast hype videos and ghastly thumbnails. Yet all the gurus and AI keep suggesting garbage hype thumbnails and titles.
haha, that's because MrBeast is the 'standard' for most gurus. If you aren't following MrBeast, you aren't doing it right - That's what gurus like to say. Pretty silly if you ask me, I'm sure they'll change what they say once a new thumbnail style beats MrBeast's
Yeah UA-cam sure feels different than what it did back in the day when I first started. Been considering doing Rumble.
do what you think is right, that's the best way to go
I agree.
thank you
It's crazy youtube is copying tiktok and tiktok is copying youtube. If you do livestreams on youtube the portrait format gets pushed on the shorts feed to be similar to tiktoks for you feed. landscape format livestreams are only pushed out as normal. Tiktok have been trying to push longer videos in the landscape format so copying youtube regular type videos.
Do you watch TikTok btw? I find it hard to connect with the creator and catered towards short term enjoyment.
@@KevinChee I must admit I don't watch much tiktok but about 6 months ago I started to post on it. The goal was to try and get some migration from tiktok to youtube this had limited success. It gained my online profile more local recognition something I had struggled with.
Yes this is very concerning for small channels like mine. You kinda wonder if it is worth starting a channel in the first place... ✨🙃✨
It depends on what you want to achieve. If you have a brand you want to build up then UA-cam is a great platform to connect and build a strong community. You can do that on TikTok too but I find the community just isn't as strong and mature as UA-cam
@@KevinChee Yes very true, I find this too. Thanks ✨
I often use AI only for thumbnail & to polish my description at the moment so the viewers would find my small channel. Copying really proven can grow our channel as you said. Please share more. 👍🏻
Keep things simple I guess :)
Great Video!
Thanks!
Eventually I'm going to get back to uploading but of course I got extremely discouraged because - where is the incentive? I'm definitely not getting paid.. not getting comments, not getting views. You might as well just make personal videos for yourself and watch them.
imo, the incentive is set by us. If we are expecting to get paid for every video then yeah, it is enough for us to say this isn't for me. However, there are some channels who use YT as a platform to build their audience and as lead generation as well. That too is an incentive of its own. And some are just after views and subs, that's an incentive as well. I would say our own personal incentive is what keeps us motivated to continue.
I noticed this a while back and started uploading twice a week. I do not like it's this way, but they want money and more content equals more money for them.
They want Shorts now. More shorts, more advertisers but less revenue to distribute with creators
Kevin Chee. You're an awesome guy. You're someone I'd actually be friends with. I think a lot of people are going through an introspective phase which I think is great. People want authenticity. Everyone wanting to be a content creator definitely scares me a little bit. I have ideas that haven't been spoken about yet. Ideas having to do with demographics for different platforms. Demographics is a generalized terms. There are sub-categories. Now, think of different platforms such as daily motion. Many users are French or middle eastern. Perhaps researching hot topics within a specific "linguistic" demographic and THEN utilizing AI to convert your VoiceOver to another language? You see where im going with this? Data & analytics tell us everything we need to know...Would love to chat with you personally. My UA-cam channel is nothing to boast about. I have 40 subs and this is because my niche is very small and unpopular/controversial. I'm ok with that. Anyhow, Great video. I legit watch your videos because I like you as a person and I think you'd be a great guy to collaborate with/brainstorm. Have a wonderful day my man.
Thanks my friend. I'm still on the fence when it comes to AI but I see where you're going with this. I haven't really thought about branching out to different languages yet, I am unfortunately unable to take on more overheads.
I have always been against thumbnails, although I do make them on my own channel only because I felt that was the best way to get views the problem with a thumbnail, though is that it’s a fault sense of advertisement and doesn’t show the actual footage that you’re going to be seeing
I take pictures as I film and then pick one as a Thumbnail for that video.
That's what we call clickbait :)
Does uploading Shorts that are linked to your long-form videos help boosts your views?
I tried once or twice, didn't see any significant improvement
@@KevinChee aw man. that sucks 😕
My plan for 2024 is to make short, low effort videos, from 1 to 7 minutes long. Most of them will be the Re-editing of my longest videos, each one divided in 2-3 pieces of 3-4 minutes.
So, I'll be able to post videos 1-2 times per week, and make the algorithm happy.
let me know how it goes!
What are the odds. Your video popped up and I have the exact same lava lamp. Cool.
haha, it is a pretty common lava lamp
Not in New Zealand @@KevinChee
I just capture a frame from the video and make it a thumbnail. It takes a few minutes. They seem to work fine although I'll have to make some improvements like getting more space for the text. We get quite a lot of views compared to our small subscriber base and the total market size (only 5 million people speak the same language). Thumbnails definitely matter but like you said, not everyone likes those polished and nowadays quite generic clickbaits. They are often so obvious, I don't want to click them even though I suspect there would be content in the video that actually interests me. So they don't make me want to watch the video but rather encourage me to not to do it. If I watch the video, I start watching it annoyed because I had to click the irritating and misleading thumbnail.
About the algorithm... It offers our videos to viewers basically just 1 day. If the video is doing exceptionally well, then 2 days. After that, the reach grows only marginally. - Matti
I used to create my thumbnail from a frame in my video when I first started but slowly evolved to what it is today. I think it is not fair to assume UA-cam stays the same forever, it is a business and business market change, so does UA-cam. Probably content creators like us need to learn to pivot too and be ready to adapt to changes.
I wish that your claim about UA-cam pushing your growth up only when you upload a new video or when uploading shorts on a daily basis would have been any true.
Well, I can be a clear testimony to that NOT being accurate at all (and that might spare you the time of exciting your own daily shorts challenge).
As of the beginning of last week I've begun to upload a short every single day. Those shorts were all very exciting - the typical videos that would generate tens of thousands if not millions of views. You know, the funny type of travel vlogging shorts that include hilarious interactions with locals, sometimes involving animals. But non of them have reached even 1k views. Unfortunately, the same is true for when I uploaded a new long form video.
So, on one thing I could definitely agree with you. And that is that the future of youtube as we know it IS VERY BLEAK!
I don't think the idea of daily shorts is exciting at all, in fact, I am not looking forward to it! Have you thought about repurposing your content to other platforms with your shorts?
@@KevinChee Yes. I did. I actually have a Facebook and Tiktok account where I have more than 20k followers on each. But yet again, I don't earn anything from it and they don't really help to shift any followers to youtube. I'm yet to try one last thing on youtube before I deem it as a platform for a hobby only, and that is by opening a whole new channel with a different name and reposting all my videos there and see whether there will be any luck on the new channel. Otherwise, I think that we could both agree that at least for most of us, UA-cam isn't the place for making a living.
