Before watching some of the translated bts material, I didn't think Pei had a thing for Xiaofeng. I thought he had a thing for the restaurant owner. However, the actor that plays him said that his character did actually have a thing for her but kept it suppressed since he knew his boundaries and was loyal to his family/the crown. I guess Li Cheng wasn't imagining things after all. Sad that General Pei had to be in a loveless marriage, but I guess that's a realistic portrayal of many of the relationships back then for people from prominent families. Maybe that's another reason the wealthy could bring in concubines as their unions tended to be more along the lines of a business transaction. Of course, that came with its own set of headaches and drama too.
The restaurant owner liked Gen. Pei, and he did had a thing for Xiaofeng (he said her safety was of utmost importance while drinking & speaking their hearts out with Master Gu Jian). He suppressed his feelings cz both his superiors that is, Prince and Master were in love with her.

That's the blind spot parents have when they force an arranged marriage, the superficial appearance of being a good pairing but the reality is that the future married couple really isn't compatible & have a miserable time.

In the book it turns a bit dark (as if it couldn't get any worse...lol) because Pei gifted the princess a kitten, but it was later found drowned in the pond with the implication that Li Cheng had killed it because he couldn't stand the idea that something someone else gave her brought her pleasure/happiness.
