  • Mark Luterra at Luterra Enterprises developed this Winnow Wizard just for us, and we're so excited to show you how it works and to improve our seed saving & packaging process. It's a fantastic piece of equipment, but it also uses very old techniques that are tried and true. The process of winnowing - using wind to clean seed - has been around for centuries.
    1:04 Winnowing okra seed
    2:39 Firing it up
    4:22 What this means
    5:32 The difference
Let's kick things off with some okra seed from our Ramona farm! There's a little bit of junk in here, and there are also some seeds that aren't viable. So rather than trying to find everything by hand or sending out weak seeds, let's fire this baby up!
The process is fairly simple. The seeds fall into our catchment. Before the seeds land, though, the air is blown horizontally (screens can be used to adjust the airflow rate), which will then blow away undesirable seeds or objects. I can also adjust the separator to really get picky.
With these added to our arsenal, we're able to do more volume faster than ever before! We've relied on smaller seed cleaning machines over the years, but the Winnow Wizard can do so much more on its own. The quality of seed that we choose to package is also higher, so everything it's all about efficiency!
When we look at the two binds side by side, the difference is clear. In one hand, I have a lot of dirt and debris mixed in with immature seeds. In the other hand, we have fully developed, healthy seeds. Everything about those seeds just looks better!
We love hearing about your successes in germinating, and we're excited to be able to make that even better than ever!

I've been hoping you'd do some behind the scenes videos. This was great. And I love how you keep the "do overs" in so we catch more of your personality. 👏
