By the way, this song actually portrays the Grim Reaper more accurately than most post 1800 depictions. Movies and TV have used the Reaper to instill horror in modern, but in the original lores that inspire the story of the Grim Reaper he is meant to be perceived as a good. Yes, his presence signifies that you are dead or dying, but originally, he was the first one there because he was meant to comfort you, and send you on your way with a wisdom that puts you at peace with your mortality.

Melty Cube - errr no it isn’t the composer (lead singer Donald Roeser) says the song is about “eternal love, rather than suicide”! And the man has a congenital heart complaint and thought he might die at a young age, hence “don’t fear the reaper” but rather live your life cos everyday could be your last!

I wrote the guitar riff, the first two lines of lyric sprung into my head, then the rest of it came as I formed a story about a love affair that transcends death. I was thinking about my wife, and that maybe we’d get together after I was gone.” Roeser said in 1998, “The second verse is the one that’s caused all the trouble all these years. ‘Valentine’ is a metaphor for mortal love. ‘Romeo and Juliet’ I used as an example of a couple who had faith to take their love elsewhere when they weren’t permitted the freedom to love here and now. What I meant was, they’re in eternity cause they had the faith to believe in the possibility. It frankly never occurred to me that the suicide aspect of their story would be plugged in to people’s take on ‘Reaper,’ making it an advertisement for suicide. The “40,000” number was pulled from the air as a guess about how many people died every day worldwide, not how many people committed suicide.”

Blue oyster cult was more progressive/psychadelic rock than regular rock or metal. Still a great choice. It's also a song about the upside of death. Which makes it strange and wild in and of itself. Not to mention it's the band's anthem. Enjoy.

Yeah, it's definitely more prog or psychedelic than metal, but Blue Öyster Cult is hard rock. I don't see a problem calling them proto-metal, or at least heavily influencing the early sound.
They are a bit of everything. But in the 80's they went full on Heavy Metal.

Fun fact: This song was featured in the original Halloween movie. In a scene where Jamie Lee Curtis' character Laurie Strode is driving around with her friend, this song can be heard from the car radio while they are both smoking a joint. The song is quite faint in that scene but it's quite noticeable if you really listen to it. I had seen Halloween many times before but I didn't realize this song was in that movie until a few years ago.
Was also expertly used in the first scenes of Stephen King's The Stand.

Blue Öyster Cult is a very unique band. Part psychedelic, part progressive, part hard rock, with a touch of punk attitude on some songs, while some songs have somewhat of a show tune feel to them. A very unique band indeed.

Personally I think this song has the greatest guitar solo ever recorded. The build up and deliverance is brutal. I know it's not the longest or most complex but the set up and execution make it epic.
There's a guitar solo in Porcupine Tree - Anesthetize, at 4:00, which really reminds me of this.
Definitely up there with the best esp. as far as iconic. Buck did some good work.

Basically he takes a rock or pop song and turns into a metal song, he plays all the instruments and does the mixing.On this song he collabed with another you tuber Mary Spender I think it sounds good he adds a little humor to the videos but its not distasteful. I took part in my high school's battle of the bands my junior year. The group I was in was trying to think of a name for us, and we settled on Red Clam Organization.
Most of my classmates didn't get the joke but a number of parents came up to us after we got off stage and said they knew what we were up to with that name lol.
BOC is a fantastic band and should definitely be delved into.
This song was ubiquitous on the radio for decades, and they have so much more that is better.

A lot of people think “(Don’t Fear) The Reaper” is a song about suicide. Your interpretation is close to what Buck Dharma (the writer) said it was about, so good job picking up on that.

The stand came out in 1994 and this song was originally from 1976. It was perfect in the Stand and it's theme but not written for the movie.
Even though I already knew the song I didn't start liking it until I heard it on the Stand that night it premiered. Its a comforting with a dark undertone.

@@neverknowsbest4994 Turn, turn, turn, has a folky, pop-rock jangle sound and the tempo is much slower. DFTReaper and The Chain are closer in tempo and closer in the ethereal airy feeling of the guitars creating a rolling ominousness. I think how you interpret things is a little "different".

That "change, change, change" part you were talking about always makes me think of Soundgarden's Rusty Cage. It used to drive me crazy because it would take a while for me to remember which song it was.
I hope someone backs me up on this, but if you want to really hear why people say Blue Oyster Cult was one of the early bands with that heavy metal sound, listen to their song "Cities on Flame With Rock and Roll" from 1972. About as heavy as Black Sabbath. Great song too.

Better than Black Sabbath. Albert Bouchard, who wrote "Cities on Flame," admitted he borrowed part of the main riff from Sabbath's "The Wizard." Actually, BOC did something more interesting with the riff, made it a better song.
The difference between Black Sabbath and BOC - college education. Similarities - Mostly Catholic in both bands.

I have just rediscovered BOC in the last 10 years or so. I loved the stuff from Secret Treaties, Mirrors, even Cultosaurus Erectus when I grew up in the 70s and 80s. Then I started to listening to Heaven Forbid and Curse of the Hidden Mirror lately and they are freaking awesome. They are, in my opinion, one of the most underrated bands ever! Buck Dharma is sublime. His solos on Burning for you and Hammer Back, in particular, are mind blowing.
Tbh Blue Öyster Cult is my favorite band and Black Sabbath is my second favorite band, and I’d say Black Sabbath is heavier. They actually toured together and shared a manager for about a year.
Now check out the SNL skit paying homage to this song. Epic.

Nice choice! I'm pretty sure when the radio plays this, they often play a version of it without the solo to make it shorter, which would explain why you knew the song but didn't recognize the solo.

Chain, chain, chain, will keep us together, Fleetwood Mac because he's very very very smart guy both of these guys are they have impeccable taste and they're very musically inclined and the one who is trying to figure out what song it was also has a really good grasp on that 70 sound so he was hearing that 70 sound... turn turn turn written by Bob Dylan although performed by The Byrds has a more 60 sound. but I knew it was Fleetwood Mac right away cuz it's what I heard.

One of my mentors wants this song played at his memorial when he passes. He did do 3 tours in Nam, so he has a very different take on it than your average retiree.
This song (or at least an edited version without the solo) has been used in so many movies! I was shocked the first time I heard the solo as I had heard the edited version so many times, and it has such an abrasive tone when it comes screaming in
