    I researched for hours how to learn modes. Never really understood how to play them. Watched this and learned the modes in under 15 minutes. Awesome job man! Thank you for this! Absolutely genius!

    I've been asking about modes. And it's hard to ask the question if you don't know the right words. And I've thought about playing a scale but starting on every different note of the scale, or as you said degree. I know how to read music and I know some music theory but I never got into modes in marching band. So thank you for confirming what I already thought but couldn't put the into words to ask people who knew more music theory than I do. Thank you.

    When I was completely new to the instrument modes were my way to learn the finger board. I had no idea what I was doing. Teachers were telling me not to learn modes yet as it is a more "advanced" part of theory. But looking back I am glad I learned modes early because I got the major scale positions/shapes, and 7 Scales all in one! Great value! You get to experiment with all those different sounds. I got more excited from that point on about learning guitar/bass. When I try to talk to my friends about modes they glaze over. It's kind of sad, because they're a really fun way to approach the instrument!

    Hey Sir, thank you so much for this video man .
    Seriously learned all the modes watching this video itself .
    And while practising the modes I just realised how some of the songs I used to listen up growing up used those certain scales .
    Like the Phrygian scale which resembles the structure of “rodeo” by lil nas x and crazy little thing called love .
    Thank you so much sir

    You made this topic so approachable. The one thing I was unclear on is whether you keep the same scale shape as key snd just start the mode scale wherever in that scale shape the next level shows up, not simply moving the same shape up a level.

    Старина, расскажите пожалуйста про детали вашей игры в этом видео?я имею ввиду грув в C-dur на 9 минуте. Вы играете утрируя в свинге ? Вы взяли это за основу игры в самом начале? Скажу вам, что главная проблема для большинства таких как я - это звук. Мне не нравится он в моих нотах. У вас много мелочей в игре. Переменный штрих, форшлаги, свинг? Вы прорабатывали что-то, что сделало вашу игру "говорящей"?как вы научились так интонировать?это из-за вашего цвета кожи маэстро?))))спасибо за ваши добрые видео, для меня это очень светлые фильмы, которые делают меня лучше в моей суровой России.

      @richbrownbass  Рік тому +1

      Hey Gary. What you wrote out here are the notes for the A Dorian scale. But to make the best use of the actual mode, I suggest you get accustomed to the shape created when you put 3 notes on each string. So the E string would be 5 7 8, the A string is 5 7 9, and the D string is 5 7 (A to A). Do you know what I mean?

Cheers, Fred Jansohn

      Mr. Brown said in one of his videos (sorry, forget which one) that he doesn't do PDFs on purpose... he believes you should learn these things by ear (except when he gives you numbers :-). He said it's totally worth it for you to write it down yourself, and then you'll have it, BUT to do that you have to... figure it out by ear! Which is, by the way, fantastic training. Notably: There are several bass bits that he plays starting about 10 minutes in which I totally want to *steal* I MEAN LEARN so that I can *sound like Rich* I MEAN INTEGRATE into my own playing 🙂

    I get the modes, but what I'd like to know is how to use them within a song. Basically if the song is II-V-I (2-5-1) in C major, then you would need to use the Dorian mode, then Mixolydian, then Ionian which becomes a little more difficult because each mode has their own tone, tone, semi-tone pattern that you need to be aware of... is this correct, or have I got all this wrong?

    I can see this as learning the seven basic patterns that make up the modes, but if you are playing D to D against a C Maj background using the notes from a C Maj scale, you are not playing Dorian, you are playing a C major scale in the second scale position. Same for E to E etc.. These notes only take on a modal character when played against their respective root, or harmonized chord structure. So if you play C Maj from the 2nd degree against a Dm7 for instance, now you are hearing the Dorian mode in all its glory. Same with playing G to G, in the key of C Maj against a G7 chord to get a Mixolydian mode.
    Please feel free to point out if this way of thinking is incorrect and why.

    • @richbrownbass
      @richbrownbass  3 роки тому +1

      I’m not saying you’re wrong. I am saying that every video on the modes says what you’re saying . What I am saying is that every mode can be seen as an extension of the major scale, and by using the modes in this way, each one brings out a different ‘colour’ in that major harmony. So yes, the shape created when you play D to D in C major is in fact a D Dorian scale, and so on. This is the best way to see the entire fretboard when playing over a given chord.

    Amazing lesson! This has really helped my get a deeper understanding of modes and how they relate to the parent key!
    One small confusion I have (and I hope I explain this in a way that makes sense) is an example that I found online where the modes were used in a progression that started with Am
    In the example, The guy was playing a progression using Am Dm F and G, in the video he used A Aeolian for Am which makes sense. He then suggested D Dorian for the Dm, F-Ionian for the F and I believe G-Mixolydian for the G.
    Now, in terms of the modes used based on their minor/major feel in relation to the chords it makes sense.
    What I'm confused about is what the parent scale would be in this situation and why those particular modes where chosen since, from my understanding based on this lesson it looks like it kind of goes against the ethos of picking a parent scale and then playing the modes in a descending order (C-Ionian, D-Dorian, E-Phrygian, etc) or am I just overcomplicating things?

    Yes, Sir. Had to watch it again. So much good stuff here. Most important is that the scale is the same, from the lowest note available on the fretboard to the highest. The idea of playing 4 notes per string up through the scale helps to understand this concept. you're still in the scale everywhere.

    Here's a cool way to think about modes!!
    C major has no sharps or flats. Right?!
    G major has ONE ... F# (the 7th interval).
    G Mixolydian (5th mode of the scale) takes that 7th interval and flattens it.
    So..... now your G "major" scale fits the key signature...
    You can do the exact same thing with any mode in any key!

    • @dgates6165
      @dgates6165 3 роки тому

      @Peter Keys Sure thing!
      So, a C Major scale has no sharps or flats. It's just...
      C D E F G A B c
      So, it's "key signature" has no sharps and flats.
      A G Major has ONE sharp. And it's...
      G A B C D E F# g
      Now, G is the fifth degree of the C Major scale... so you would typically play a G Major scale or chord..
      However, if you played a G Major scale... and include that F#... the scale no longer matches the key signature of C Major.
      So, if you play G in the MIXOLYDIAN mode (because G is the fifth degree of C Major and MIXOLYDIAN is the 5th mode of C Major) MIXOLYDIAN simply means you play a major key with a flat 7
      So, in the case of G...
      We go from
      G Major: G A B C D E F# g
      To
      G Mixolydian: G A B C D E F g
      And now that G matches the key signature because the mode removed the "accidentals" from the scale!
      Does that help at all?! I can try to explain it differently if that isn't clear enough!

    • @dgates6165
      @dgates6165 3 роки тому

      @Peter Keys
      Close!! You just got your terms confused
      G is the fifth DEGREE of the C Major scale, so yes, Mixolydian is the fifth MODE of the major scale

    • @dgates6165
      @dgates6165 3 роки тому

      @Peter Keys Well, just spell out the scales.
      G Major is...
      G A B C D E F# g
      So, it's Key signature is just ONE sharp
      A minor (because the second degree of a major scale is minor) is...
      A B C D E F G a (same key signature as C Major...)
      Dorian just means... play a minor scale with a raised 6th.
      So...
      A Minor..
      A B C D E F G a
      A Dorian
      A B C D E F# G A
      Sooo...
      Now your A scale matches the key signature of G Major...

    • @dgates6165
      @dgates6165 3 роки тому +1

      @Peter Keys The key is hard to say, and it would really depend on what you want.
      For example, it could be D Major, but the C should be diminished if it were.
      You're using a C Major... that isn't wrong... it's called a borrowed chord.
      So, you can say you're in D Major
      Scales.... I mean, it just depends on what you want. You could just play D Major scale over the d Major chord.
      And the same for the rest.
      Or, you can play around. Just try using different scales within the key and see how it sounds!

    • @dgates6165
      @dgates6165 3 роки тому +1

      @Peter Keys So, ideally you want to use as many notes that are in the chord as possible, while still making it interesting!
      Also, you're right about the modes. When you use them, you do want to concentrate on the intervals which make them sound unique.
      So, for Dorian, yes, you'd want to use that sharp 6 a bit.
      If you're playing Mixolydian, focus on the flat 7
      So it depends on what you're doing, but you don't ONLY use those notes. You absolutely can do that, and it will harmonize, but it will get boring after a while!

    So, in “C” if you want that Egyptian (Phrygian) sound, do you play “C” Phrygian or “E” Phrygian?

    • @richbrownbass
      @richbrownbass  3 роки тому

      Good question. You have the choice to play either. C Phrygian on a Cmaj chord will definitely give you an exotic sound with some interesting 'dissonances', but using the E Phrygian gives you a different kind of exoticism that is much more consonant. I actually like both.

    Hi. If I've got you right we can cover any chord by any mode? Right? Can I play C Dorian (minor) on C major etc?

    • @richbrownbass
      @richbrownbass  3 роки тому

      Well, that mode would give you the minor 3rd and the minor 7th on a major chord. Not the most desirable sounds. I was saying you can play any mode over any chord as long as they are diatonic (of the same key). In the case of C major, D Dorian is the diatonic mode you want to play. I hope that makes sense. Thank you for watching.

    Defiinitely needed this! I've been playing bass for quite some time now, and several years back i took some lessons just to open my mind to new ways of exploring my instrument. The first thing my teacher taught me was this! And this was definitely a game-changer. So glad i came across this video, as it serves as the perfect reminder! Subscribed! 😁

    What folks don't tend to grasp is that the chords determine whether or not a piece of music is a modal chord progression. For example | Am / / / | / / D / | is a modal chord progression. It's in A dorian. The reason is that the notes of the chords (A, C, E and D, F#, A) are only found in the key of G....but I think it disingenuous to suggest that chord progression is in the key of G - since the chord progression has no G note or G chord in it - and it's obviously a minor chord progression. I hope that's helpful to someone :)

    • @richbrownbass
      @richbrownbass  Рік тому +1

      I'm going to have to jump in and stop you there, because I don't want anyone to be misled by what you're saying.
      I need to say, with all due respect, that you're incorrect. There is no key of A Dorian. A Dorian is the II (two) chord of G major. D7 is the V (five) chord of G major. The progression you've given as your example is a II-V progression in the key of G. Also, you've only given the notes of the triads, not the full chords (which include the 7th as a 'chord tone'). The minor 7th of an A minor chord is in fact G. Not to go too deep down the rabbit hole, but if you had a progression in A minor, all the diatonic chords would have to relate to its relative major, which in the case of Amin would be Cmaj. For a song to be in a particular key, the diatonic chords would have to relate to a natural major scale or a natural minor scale (if it's in a minor key). The modes of either cannot serve as the key. I hope that make sense.

      Interesting and, as you say, we seem to disagree. Describing an Am as only being a 'full chord' If it's an Am7 is a point of contention between us. Also, yes an Am chord in isolation would nominally be regarded as being associated with C major, but not when it's coupled with a D. As I said, Am and D in isolation are only related to G as a major scale, but I stand by my assertion that describing an Am chord progression as being in the key of G major is not helpful to learners in my experience... it's like, it's not wrong, but unhelpful in my honest opinion.
      I'd welcome a Skype or Zoom chat to compare perspectives, if you fancy. I'm a music enthusiast not a troll :)
