My aunt and uncle lived in Allen, Saskatchewan! Just a hop, skip and a jump East of Saskatoon. Grew up washing a cream separator - always had to make sure the proper ring was on the bottom! Ours was not electric, we had to turn the handle at just the right speed to make sure the cream wasn't too thin. Fun times, and a great unit to have with milk producing animals around.
Your friend in the commentary section has the patience of a SAINT. He's truly funny, has an excellent sense of humour, quick witted and I love his dry delivery of some subtle zingers. You're lucky to have such a buddy out there. And....... its payback time - I am sure!
In my childhood days we used the cream separator and done the milk from 30 cows. Westhaliai is the brand name for separators and milking supplies even today. DeLavel is a company that make them to. You brought me back to my childhood days.
Born in Maine but moved to Connecticut at age 3. I thought milk came from a factory. We went back to Maine every summer. My dad took me to his uncles in the country, maybe 1959. I was 5. Across the dirt road was a old working farm. Zip was the farmers name. He showed me around and then I watched him milk a cow. He gave me a ladle from the bucket and said try it. It was warm from the cow but was so Good. THEN, we went inside and he poured the milk in to this big round silver thing. Milk came out one spout and cream out the other. It was a incredible, mind boggling day I still remember 62 years later.
I think that cream separator is actually a Vega separator unit mated with a Westphalia motor unit but it looks to be an awesome machine. Looking forward to seeing more videos of the products you make from the cream as Julia corners the market for goat milk products in your area. Great stuff always, love seeing your family grow, learn and develop your off-grid homestead, thanks for sharing your life with us.

Super parents with super girls that just enjoy living the off grid life. I really enjoy watching them create & process so much of their food. Thanks for another great video.
Take a tall glass ,fill it full of snow, chill it then, pour a shot of goat cream over the top, wola goat cream milkshakes. A splash of vanilla oh boy whoopee.
As a little kid in the 50’s..we had a separator but it was a hand crank..it was like starting out in 10th gear..slow and hard at first..then gradually I would get it up to speed and open the valve..it worked well and was over 75 years old..the plates or cones were nickel plated..the whole unit was 4.5 feet high..there were platform below to hold the milk and cream vats.. after each use we took it apart and cleaned it right away..we milked morning and late afternoon...we made cheese from the milk and ice cream with the cream..we had two cows..we had a small farm..but I never forget the separator.. I was important...the unit weight was over 150 pounds or about 75 kilos.. nice to see you all enjoying old ways.. thanks
So jealous of your guys life and how you supply all of your own food pretty much..and it's all the best you could ever think of buying very lucky you are! Love being able to follow your familys awesome adventure/life.
That was actually really cool to watch and see one of those cream separators run. It's not something I have ever seen before. Thank you for posting this.
Hey guys, I just discovered your channel this morning and I love it. I think you are doing an absolutely wonderful job raising your family the way you are and teaching values that have been long forgotten by most of our society. God Bless each of you.
If i could go back in time and get a do over, i would trade raising my kids in this techno world for something similar to your families lifestyle. Good job guys.
Definitely y’all are in my top 5 favorite UA-cam channel. Based on how exciting it is to watch, especially putting on the lockers on the Jeep 👍🏼. God bless for Lakeland Florida 🌴
When i was young we used to have a few Jersey cows and would skim the cream off the gallon glass jar and shake the cream to make butter. Good fun watching you learn to use the separator.
yeah mee too, that was my job to shake the jar,we didnt have no seperator just a big gallon jars we put the milk in and the cream would just float on top, good ole days!!!
Too funny - way to go Girl. Brings back memories as I used to run the crank on the separator on my Grandparents farm. Not too fast or slow. Otherwise you miss out on proper separation. You have a winner there!
Hi from Uncle Jeff in Oklahoma, USA! You kids are so Blessed as we are. You have such a Beautiful Family and l miss my children being young but Poppy Hood is AWSOME! Love and Prayers for you all! Love and God Bless ! Uncle Jeff !
Takes me back to when I was a boy and we went to my brother in laws dairy farm. They used to separate cream from the milk to send to the butter factory. The milk was used to supplement feed pigs. Same type of machine but the cleaning of the cups was a big deal. Had to use a lot of boiling water for hygiene and cleanliness. Have fun and thanks for the trip down memory lane. The 1960's were a long time ago.
The skim milk I feed to the calves..it was a great live to grow up with...things you do yourself was rewarding in many ways and helped me develop into a responsible person.. hugs all
Beautiful family❤️🌸 I get so much more energy of doing what i always have wanted, when I’m watching you're videos😀 Living in the nature, back to the roots😊 Much love from Norway🤩🇳🇴
I spend a ridiculous amount of my life watching homesteading videos ( Im a dreamer). This channel is by far the most entertaining! How do you not have a reality tv show?? I look forward to watching you guys for a laugh. My family thinks Im looney when Im laughing at my phone for 15 minutes. I cant even explain why, because I cant stop laughing😂😂😂😂! God bless you all!
I would have licked that shot glass clean too, don't waste a drop. !😋 That lil A&W mug brings back fond childhood memories. Some day I'll get me some Nubian/Dwarf Nigerian goats--some day, Lord willing.💕
We've just started watching your videos this week. We don't have paid tv just stream through the internet and we have been hooked. I'm ex military Hunter fisherman diy outdoorsy type Gardner home fixer upper kinda guy and the wife is learning the same skills. But see your family as self-sufficient working tool. Well done in all your endeavors in today's world. Your family has awesome skills. I'm envious of your lifestyle.
Very nice, excited to see what products are produced and how profitable the business is. Having never tried raw milk, no less cream I guess I have no idea what I am missing? I really like the line at 4:30 "but it's a van" ... Not just any van, the best van ever made so I would say you got an upgrade to a Westfalia from the Vega!
What a Sweet machine 👍🔥. So many things to make with cream, yumo! Skim milk doesn't taste bad I drink it but you may not. But Pigs sure love it! So exciting 🎇🎆🎊🎉. JO JO IN VT 💕😄
Dial folks, think of doing that without him electric motor under the separator. That’s what I did for years ago when my kids were young. I will grab the nearest kids and make turn the crank to separate for the cream from the skim milk. They are for remember doing it for me. Good luck with your business.
Amen! Cream power!! Always keep disks in order.. I cringed when I saw you taking them apart.. You can adjust the thickness of the cream on the side of the bell..its a very small screw, that you can tighten or loosten.. Let the machine run for about 60 seconds then turn milk flow on..We have a few manual separators, we live on cream
"...and tastes like a Dutch baby." I laughed so hard at that line, that cream shot out my nose, and I wasn't even drinking cream! I'd never heard that line, but have always used, "tastes like a baby angel". I love this channel for a hundred reasons, but when Jeff and Dave are together, I can't stop laughing!
My childhood-wake up and milk Nelly, strain milk through paper towel, put goaty goat milk on corn flakes and fill thermos with goaty goat milk for lunch pail -I’m so over goat milk but fun video 👍
like to seek such great success. You have a young budding entrepreneur. One suggestion I will make is purchase a small hand help manual goat milking pump. I am not expert but saw it used on another u tube video. He popped on the suction cups over goats teats, then gave the hand held unit a few pumps to create vacuum and milk poured out. No need for power and super fast. He also had small room specifically for milking, a little elevated wooden stand, feed bowl at one end, wood bar to lock head in once goat starts feeding, hook up cups and in minutes container full of milk. Your living in Paradise.
Almost anything mechanical from the 50s still works, so long as it was cared for, because they cared about quality. Not just as chap as you can from china junk. Hope you'll do one on her first butter making journey too!
I'm still using cooking utensils that my mother bought in 1955. In those days I learned to pick and make pies with wild blackberries . I still pick them today and my new picking season starts next week. Last year I picked about £200 worth of berries at supermarket prices. I would urge the Burkinshaw's to do some blackberry picking!
This should go well with Julia's goat cream. Take some ripe blackberries. Wash them well and place in a saucepan. Let them cook in their own juice for 5-10 minutes on low heat with a sprinkle of sugar. Leave to cool. Serve with custard as we do in Ireland. The goat cream would be worth trying out with blackberries or indeed any wild berry.
Johnny Mac Where in Ireland? My dad was from Belfast. I spent a month visiting my grandma when I was young, but there was lots and lots of army around back then.
On our farm mid to late forties into the fifties, we had a herd of about 50 jersey cows and separated all the milk. The cream went to a butter factory and the skim milk went to pigs and calves. But for the house we had a specially tested cow that we hand milked and to get cream we would let the milk settle in a refrigerator at least overnight and skim the cream off the top, using the cream and skimmed milk for our family needs. This created a much thicker cream. Cleaning the separator was a chore and we used sodium hypochlorite (hypo for short) and very hot water as the approved cleaning agent.
I have a 5 L glass jug that has a spout in the side/bottom, I fill it once a week with raw cows milk, and of course the cream rises to the top as I drink the milk out of the bottom/spout. At the end of the week, all that's left in the jug is cream, and I take it out and make butter out of it. I haven't bought any butter in years! SR
Thanks for sharing! We have never seen one of those in action before. At the pace we go through cream, it would pay for itself in about a year, just on personal consumption! Keep up the interesting vids!
Not sure about that guy, but you ladies are awesome! The goats were really cool too... Still not sure about that guy... Tell the truth now, did you find a Sasquatch roaming around in the woods, clean em up and cloth him? Doesn't seem to have been a good use of your time and effort... Really though, I find you all's vids fun, entertaining and sometimes educational... Wouldn't mind seeing them frequently.
As a baby, I was allergic to formula so I was raised on goats milk. I have been allergic to dairy products all my life. I drink soy and almond milk and eat goat's cheese. I'm also allergic to sles and all so I use goats milk soap.
GRATS GUYS!!!! So cute BTW!! So we feed the skim milk to the pigs. THEY LOVE it and it's not good for us. I do not know how it works but told when you remove the fats from the milk it's not ok for us to drink.. God Bless guys..
If you're going to drink milk, skim milk is much better for you because it doesn't have the fats. We do need some fats in our diet but most people get way too much.
Oh my gosh, as he was saying "You're cream powered" I thought "cream puff" and then he said it haha. You had me cracking up, too. Tell your daughter that she ought to check out the thing they use on the Lumnah Acres channel to milk their goats. : )
