    I’ve been using Miracle Grow for 30+ years. 1/4 tsp. for 1 gallon of water. I use this every time I water, It’s super easy and my plants look great and some I have had for 20+ years and some are older and were my Moms plants. I just feel like it doesn’t have to be overly complicated.

      This is exactly my situation too! BUT, my secret is that I use the Miracid Miracle Grow (for acid loving plants, but it’s best for all plants). A grower told me to use this because of the little bit of iron it offers, which also adjusts the ph. That allows more nutrients to be absorbed and gives the lush green growth. After trying it, all my plants became the best they have ever been. And grew bigger than average.

    I use foliage pro/ super thrive and love it❤I use highest dose and no plant burn 🔥 I also use the super thrive vitamin about once a month. I agree with other commenter goto local hydroponics stores I get giant perlite and clonex (I add couple drops for better root growth) for same or less than Amazon prices! My state weed is legal so hydroponics stores carry anything and everything you could want or need! No I don’t grow weed lol but many products they carry work great for houseplants bc growers buy best for optimal crops ;)

    Superthrive Foliage Pro is extremely similar to GT Foliage Focus. I use them interchangeably. The main difference is that Superthrive has a couple more micronutrients and also sodium (salt) so be sure to flush your semi-hydro media occasionally to prevent build ups. The reason GT is so expensive for you is that it comes from Australia. Here in New Zealand both products are similarly priced. The GT isn’t weaker. In fact, the recommended dose (5 ml per litre) is stronger than Superthrive. I ran all the nutrients through a hydroponic ppm calculator and GT at 3 ml per litre gave the most similar strength to the Superthrive weekly dilution. As long as you’re using either weekly, it should be enough. If you’re watering less than weekly, then dilute it a little less. Hope that helps!

      You have a very good explanation about these fertilizers 🙂 I have many calathea and these drama queens are sensitive to salt, that’s why I use GT Foliage focus. Foliage pro look very great if your plants are not sensitive to salt In Canada I can have GT easy, but Foliage pro it’s very difficult to find.

    Yellowing of leaves could also be caused by too much fertilizer; especially around edges of leaves like you described. I have heard/read that this is what fertilizer burn could look like. The other thing that you pointed out are the yellow leaves are at the bottom of your plant it could be that those are the oldest leaves. It is normal for plants to discard their oldest leaves. You may try and experiment with cutting back on your fertilizer. These are just my thoughts.

    • @plantsbymelissa
      @plantsbymelissa  11 місяців тому +8

      Hey there! It's not normal to yellow off 7 leaves at once. These leaves are not old at all I just chopped the plant a few months prior. It's shock and I'm thinking from underfeeding because I wasn't fertilizing appropriately at first. No way was I overdoing it. The top growth is so big that it must be super hungry and it has so many roots in the pole already. It's hard to keep these big poles watered too because they dry out so fast.

    Adansonii so notorious for chlorotic-looking leaves; if not an over-watering issue then giving a shot of iron always worked for me. My favorite is Garden Pro Quick Green with Iron ( scant capful) added to my fertilizer in my 2 gal watering can. Greens-up plants very quickly and keeps them that way. I love Osmocote+ fertilizer, too, one of the best imo, but like you said, it only lasts 3 months.

    My plants have been putting leaves out like crazy since I started using this fertilizer. I use the silica as well. I started with 1/2 tsp then upped it to a whole tsp. I can tell a difference in the color of my plants and the size of the leaves. I have an alocasia that has gave me three leaves back to back. Each one coming out before the last one hardens off. I have 7 leaves and so far haven’t lost one since I started using this fertilizer. I have only been using for a few months but I am really loving it and my plants definitely seem to be. I believe it has a good dose of calcium and magnesium so you wouldn’t need to use the cal mag.

    Becareful you may have nutrient lock out (I know the adansonii had issues before with yellowing ) with the adansonii that happened to me with my dubia. I had to repot and add nutrients in the correct way which took me a little longer, like using cal mag first before GT. And then if I use silica then I have to add that first before anything. Nutrient lock out is very common , and your poles (like mine) are really hard to fertilizer because moss holds onto the salts and it’s hard to “flush” the poles out. So I had to make major adjustments with fert. Moss. but it’s tough to fix . Sending you love and healing for tryout babies ❤
    But I can say watching from afar like on insta and UA-cam - after GT your plants had some crazy increase in size and it was so cool to see ❤

    • @plantsbymelissa
      @plantsbymelissa  11 місяців тому

      The moss was fairly new since I chopped it and I’m surprised it would be holding onto salts that much to cause a lockout in that short time. I have other poles that have really old moss and no issues with them. I thought GT didn’t have sodium so just the tap water causing the buildup possibly?

    Hi Melissa! I've used the Foliage Pro for a few years, then tried the Foliage Focus. I didn't notice any difference, so the Focus, in my experience, works just as well as the Foliage Pro. I use the Maintenance dose of the Foliage Pro, but you might find one of the other dosages works better for your plants. I use it every other watering instead of every watering (along with calmag and silica).

    been watering my adansonii on a moss pole with GT FF once a week at 3-5 mL/L and haven't had any of these issues. Occasionally get a yellow leaf the bottom of the plant but I put this down to natural aging. Only time I've noticed signifciant yellowing is when I've overwatered the pole and accidentally left water in the saucer for too long. In saying that I'll be making the switch to Foliage Pro soon as its more cost effective and essentially the same product by the looks of things.

  • @richardr5878
    @richardr5878 11 місяців тому

    You will love Foliage Pro. It’s a complete fertilizer and “ideal” (at this time) NPK ratio. Big plus is it has cal and mag, so no lockout. I use 1/4 to 1/2 strength every water. Great bang for the buck as well.
    I still sprinkle Osmocote plus to my pots, especially on my citrus and bananas. I look at it as a supplement vs the primary.
    Oh my, that Epi pole next to your Adansonii looks so stunning with that contrast. Nice positioning to really have it pop!

    I love GT Foliage Focus, which I've been using for the past 15 months or so, and Rootzone for the past 8 (when it became available). But I live in West Australia, where GT was born, so the cost is a lot more manageable - I buy the 5 litre jug of FF and it lasts more than a year, even though 3/4 of my 60+ plants are in leca.
    But you need to use what works for you. 😊

    I don’t know that you will be able to use just one nutrition product easily for all your plants across all media. You could use your liquid for semi hydro and maybe moisten your moss poles with a dilution of the semi hydro solution, but i found it expensive and confusing and time consuming to use the liquid ferts for my plants in soil. I use that same foliage product in the black bottle for semi hydro (I don’t even bother with the ph stuff. My water is super hard. I just tell my plants ‘figure it out’ lol) and I would dilute what was left over from hydroponics to water my plants in soil. the plants in soil don’t like that product as much as my plants in semi-hydro like it. I use captain jacks very diluted as a continuous feed almost every time I water my plants in soil and it works well. They grow well and whenever I repot something the roots systems are vigorous. But your hard work and diligence is paying off the because your plants look amazing. I hope you enjoy them and don’t stress yourself out too much trying to treat them with the best of everything. 😊 Plants have been here millions of years and they know how to beautiful where they can be beautiful without a lot of help from humans 😊🥰

    Love your collection and videos! I have both GT Foliage Focus and Dyna Gro Foliage Pro, and I use them for different things. I grow most of my collection in pon and for most plants (alocasias, anthuriums, pothos, monstera, philodendron, aglaonema, begonia, etc), I use Foliage Pro, but when I used it on my calatheas and marantas, over time, they seemed like they were crisping around the edges, and I wondered if it was overfertilization. I backed way off on the fertilization and switched to once monthly Foliage Focus and their new growth is not crispy at all. Caveat, I've only been doing this new regimine for a couple of months, so I don't know if any nutrient deficiencies will become obvious with time, but for now, they seem happy and healthy. My other genuses that require a little more nutrients do very well with Foliage Pro. Time will tell.

    Foliage Pro has been highly recommended by a lot of old-school plant growers forever. I feel like there was some confusion when SuperThrive purchased the product and now it's called SuperThrive Foliage Pro. Because it is not at all related to the old SuperThrive product. Foliage Pro is a great, balanced fertilizer. And bonus it can be used for both hydro and soil based plants just like GT Foliage Focus. Also, you can use Foliage Pro along with nutricote or osmocote as well.

    Melissa, how much light do you give to your plants? As far as I can see, you have Mother lights, which are quite powerful. Changing fertilisers combined with strong lights can quickly throw plants off balance. The plant is photosynthesising in overdrive and the nutrient intake is not keeping up.
    I reduce the lighting in the plant room by about 15-20% when I change fertiliser (I'm just switching to Compo). The regeneration time sometimes takes up to a month. It is especially important to stop further yellowing of the leaves.
    Yellowing of the lower leaves and normal beautiful new leaves are a good indicator that the plant is going into partial saving mode, taking/saving from the old parts to provide nutritional support for the new growth.

I think I remember you saying that specific one wasn't getting enough light and whenever I have my alocasias in a spot with even slightly less light they start yellowing leaves like crazy (especially the bigger ones). Not sure about the other plants, but it could be that it's a different issue for this one specifically. Also, the alocasia may be even hungrier if it's not getting the light it needs/wants?

    So I have been struggling to figure out how to fertilize my plants this whole year basically, I cant tell if I'm under fertilizing or overfertilizing. I get the same symptoms you have on some of your plants. Mostly its my pon/leca plants that are struggling, right now I am using Foliage Pro at 1/2 tsp per gallon and flushing once or twice a month. Right now I'm going to switch some of my semihydro plants back to soil as my soil plants seems to have less issues. What do you think, should I fertilize more, I'm just afraid of fertilizer burn.

    • @plantsbymelissa
      @plantsbymelissa  11 місяців тому +1

      I’m sorry you’ve been having issues with the fertilizer and some of the plants are struggling 🥲 I might stick with the 1 tsp per gallon and see how it goes and if I need to adjust. I worry about over and under feeding too! I haven’t been using a liquid feed for that long so I’m not sure what to tell you as far if you should feed more or not. You can test different amounts of the fertilizer on certain plants to see how they respond? I may end up doing that with some of mine 💚

    • @plantsbymelissa

      I really don't think I was over doing it. For the adansonii I think it was definitely underfeeding just from the size of the plant. I started using so little of the fertilizer at first. The alocasia I'm not sure since I just started adding liquid. I'm going to invest in a EC meter for hydroponics so I can better access what's going on.
