Hi Dave I work as a bushcraft instructor in the Uk and just wanted to show some appreciation for your videos. you continually produce outstanding, informative videos which are just invaluable. So much content and its people like yourself who are getting more and more people outdoors and have also helped me to share more information with my clients. Please keep up the good work.
I've been using my old woodland poncho that way. I realley learn a lot with this little clip here. I'm on a thigh budget and can't get the nicer stuff out there but i'm glad that the more you do clips using differents gear the more I see gears i have that work in the same way. Plus I get to learn new way to use my old gear. Thank you Dave. I would love to go see your school anytime soon. From Quebec Canada.
With the way things are going in D.C. I sure hope people appreciate the knowledge you put out here man. I am constantly turning people on to your youtube channel and all I hear back from them is "wow, glad you showed me that". Thanks so much for all the work you put in for us.
I really think that this is one thing that people tend to forget, sometimes intentionally... That it is often fact that the simple things work. We over think way too much sometimes. Thanks for bringing it back to the basics Dave... Plus 1 on the SAN revival!
Hey Dave, I´m doing woodcraft with my little 5yo daughter as a hobby....youre videos are a great inspiration to me...things I saw 1000times you do it a little different way and I learned (after 30 years doing my hobby) something new, thats awesome....THANK you for uploading and take care..... Regards from Germany, Marcus
Dave I was just about to message you asking if you could make one of these again. Thank you so much! I can't tell you how much what you do means to me. There's none that is capable of what you are doing on youtube. There are no words for my feeling towards you and what you are doing for your fans.
The pine cone jam knot thing is absolutely money! I cannot wait to use that! As always DC you're doing such a great job giving all of us fantastic information. Keep on it my brother.
Hey Dave because of your earlier videos this year I was able to survive and make it back to civilization I was on a camping trip in the middle of the Colorado mountains my car died on me and I made a small survival pack do to your instructions so thanks man
Really glad I watched your video...love the knowledge and experience that shines through a person like yourself! Hope to one day get hands-on training at your school.
Excellent video as always. Thanks very much. I'm just getting back in to wilderness skills after having taught them for many years. Your videos are really inspiring.
Dave i found a very neat vintage knife. Its called the Forest Friend. Japanese made Stag scales multiple tools/blades. Its only missing the kitchen sink. It actually has a full size folding fork and spoon on either side of the knife. The main blade isn't exactly the best quality steel but still its a neat little package. Maybe you can find out a little for your subscribers
Dave, if it is raining pretty good, have you ever, or would you recommend digging a rain trench around the bottom of the outside of the shelter, like what was done with military shelter halves? Is it necessary to do that to prevent rain run off from coming inside the shelter area? And how would the dirt from the trench negatively affect the long-term durability of the shelter material?
Dave Love all your videos, been watching your channel for a while. I'm going to be graduating high school this year and will be going to Castleton College in VT but I'm going to be living on the family property a few miles away from the school. Therefore I'll have the opportunity to have a garden, hunt, trap, fish etc. If you could do a series on homestead living with maybe going over growing food for your family, or if you have chickens or other produce you can go over that. Thanks.
Enjoying this "Back to Basics" series brother. I currently have a Pro Force all weather shelter which I mainly use. Pretty big tarp (10x10) with tabs and grommets. I would've purchased a Pathfinder tarp, but your store was outta stock at the time, lol. Plan on ordering an oil skin canvas one here soon, think it'll out last anything else on the market. Anyways, good series...look forward to more. Mike from NC
I use the rectangular tarps, from walmart and they do fine for me. Tho im thinking i may cut one down, to make a square tarp to try this type of shelter. Thanks for showing. I have one problem with this video. It ended and i was like awwwww i dont want to wait to see part 2 lol . Great vid, you left me wanting more.
Hope ya show some good setups that include hammocks. I don't like sleeping on the ground unless I have too. I'm a heavy sleeper & don't like the idea of something trying to snuggle-up to me at night.
dave found it interesting that an episode of preppers had a guy on it that referred to the 10 c's....thanks for what you do....God Bless America...as well you and your family
Very cool... I need to get to the woods more! I like that poncho.. I might have to add it to my wish list. Thanks for the videos Dave.. really appreciate all your hard work.
Hey Dave...have you ever had an issue with a pine-cone putting little holes in your tarp when using it instead of a "button rock"? Of course some rocks can have sharp edges as well so it always depends. great video...thanks!
Mr. Canterbury , This may be off topic but I would love to see or better yet be taught by you on how to prepare for a war like scenario... like red dawn were the enemy is here on our land. Just a thought. Thanks and love your stuff.
I bet the poncho configuration is longer in the back to allow for a pack underneath. It'd easily cover the whole scout rig you showed a few videos back.
Dave I wish i just knew everything that you have forgot lol you are def level Master lol, would say it takes a lifetime to know as much as you, you are getting old so i guess it does take a lifetime, KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK. thank you and all your staff for helping so many and to help us all learn week in and week out brother.
I'd like to see an 8x8 version of this tarp. Although, you'd probably have to remove the poncho or it would be dragging on the ground. The 7x7 is just too small for me. Great video.
I'm going to have to grab one of those poncho tarps, but will need one in 8x8. Are you going to have any in 8x8 in stock soon or can you post a link to where we can order one? My old issued poncho that I somehow kept has so many patches on it that its becoming more glue than rubber. Time for an upgrade. Semper Fi
Dave, Love the video and fan of self reliance outfitters. I would like to know where to get shelter basic tarp the one that you have on your youtube video?
Would it be possible, to go over more specifically different set up for certain conditions? And more importantly why each set up is best for condition x,y,or z?
Awesome vid Dave!!! I just bought this same tarp from your website and I'm so happy to come across this video! Perhaps you can post it to your website under the "vid" tab. Thanks again!
just an FYI after reading through the comments. It doesn't have to be a pine cone, rocks, a hunk of wood anything that wont tear the tarp. I often use acorns.
another entertaining and informativ video. im from austria and a big fan of the pathfinderschool. thank you for all your effords to make those videos. atb TBM austria
Dave, I'm thinking about folding a ground cloth up into my EDC bag to use as a tarp shelter. I thought the tie-out straps would come in handy. Not sure how good it would be at shedding water, though. Any thoughts?
you wouldn't lift the middle of the tarp like at the end when in cooler weather, right? don't want to let cold air in and such, want to keep it compact and warm.
Just wondering: How would you get salt or acceptable substitutes for salt in the wilderness? I think i read somewhere that animal blood can be drunk if your body is short on salt (I drink the blood anyway or make black pudding), but what if there are no animals around and you're sweating your guts out? (maybe you could do something with the sweat itself?) Take care / A subscriber from the cold, barren forests of northern Sweden
Dave is there a difference between knot strength if i use a running bowline vs a bowline or jam knot with the tag end dropped through when securing your ridge line? Thanks.
Picking up the middle of the tarp *really* made a huge difference in room inside. If you left it as it was while it was raining, wouldn't rain get caught in the "trough" and weight down the middle?
Also, I know you're a huge fan of Duluth pack and hav a workin relationship with those folks. For a traditional pack I don't think you could get any better. However, it would be nice if they could add some type of internal frame system...like aluminum stays ect. for rigidity. Now like you, I don't mind putting a $2 trash can in one, but for a $300 pack you think it would come with something already made in. Guess it could take away from the traditional aspect. What are your thoughts bro?
10 x 10 maybe overkill to you, but for me because of the many configurations you can get out of a 10 x 10, it is exactly what I want. If you can get a 10 x 10 with the hood and maybe some more Velcro around the bottom to pull up the bottom (because 10 foot would be to long) at a reasonable price I would buy that. Thanks
Hey Dave great Vid! Where can i get this oiled cloth Tarp which i've seen in another video? i cant find it in the Pathfinderstore. Greetings from Berlin Germany!
Nice Tarp, reminds me of the military poncho, The Army Field Manual FM 21-15 - 1977 Care and Use of Individual Clothing & Equipment (free online takes some searching or check my site) starting on page 57 has an excellent section with drawings on shelters from a poncho, great ideas just to add to what you are showing here. The 1966 version is even better but I have not found free version yet.
The one thing I haven't heard anything about is survival with small kids. I can weather a hard night, but moving and surviving with kids (or hell, old folks) is a dynamic that nobody has covered in depth.

Dave,
Appreciate all your video's and work supporting us who love the outdoors and hunting. All the best to you and your family.
Love these "back to basics" style videos. Keep it up Brother.

Great video Dave, really liked that "jam knot" with the pine cone!
Pinecone under the trap = brilliant! Thanks Dave
The pine cone jam knot thing is absolutely money! I cannot wait to use that! As always DC you're doing such a great job giving all of us fantastic information. Keep on it my brother.

I never would have thought to use a rock/pinecone and a noose to tie up a tarp like that. Thanks for the pro tips.
Dave your a natural in front the camera and always make the best videos my friend. God bless!
Excellent video as always. Thanks very much. I'm just getting back in to wilderness skills after having taught them for many years. Your videos are really inspiring.
To me, this is the only configuration a man needs to know. Best mix of efficient square footage usage and weather proofness.
Great videos, i like that you take the time to respond to your viewers and are not like the other people who do give one cent!
Thanks love the basic series helps a lot with young survivalists its hot in Texas wish it was cooler at night
The pine cone was genius. You look like a Jedi in the tarp which is fitting cause you know how to use the force
Mr. Canterbury, I have to ask could you do a short vid on your tattoos, I'm an artist here in Tennessee and love the old school ink. Thanks

Thanks for sharing Dave ! I think most people are going to get a real kick out of the pine cone !
Dave teaches what needs to be taught!! Not all the bs on other channels!!

Great video, like the tip with the pine cone and the jam knot. Cheers.

That's going to be a good series, might be interesting to see different camp setup as well: camp fire placement, fire reflector etc.
Hi Dave. Great video. Could u please post a link to where I could buy the tarp u used.
dave found it interesting that an episode of preppers had a guy on it that referred to the 10 c's....thanks for what you do....God Bless America...as well you and your family

Great video, as always. What are your thoughts about handheld radios for survival? Ham, gmrs, etc..

Dave, where do you find those 7x7 ponchos? Been looking at getting a mil-surp but this looks way more versatile. Thanks for the informative videos.

Great job Dave... In the UK myself, what's the name of the poncho/tarp you used?
Are you going to offer that tarp poncho in 8X8 any time soon, I'm 6'3 and my son is 6'5? Thanks for the great vids and equipment.
i like the offset hood idea for wearing the poncho over a pack !
Dave, Love the video and fan of self reliance outfitters. I would like to know where to get shelter basic tarp the one that you have on your youtube video?

Another great video Dave. Thank you for all that you do!
please do a video on fur from skinning it preserving it and then to workable fabric

That tarp looks way cool. I think I will have to pick one up.
Thanks Dave!
Dave, Any advice to someone who just had a Kidney transplant who has a love of the outdoors?
Hey Dave, I´m living in europe, where can I buy that Tarp over here?
Thank you.
very neat idea Dave.. nice and easy to put up quickly, could get you out of a jam.. thanks for the great vids
What do you think of the jungle hammock that has mosquito netting and a tarp over it? Have you used one?
hey dave, are you going to do any more SAN videos? they are very good.
Hey Dave, what ever happened with the tenkara fishing kit or series?...just wondering
Hey Dave, Your jam knots look a lot like what we call slip knots. Enjoying the vids.
Just wondering: How would you get salt or acceptable substitutes for salt in the wilderness? I think i read somewhere that animal blood can be drunk if your body is short on salt (I drink the blood anyway or make black pudding), but what if there are no animals around and you're sweating your guts out? Nice. Great tarp set up tutorial. Thanks again
To sharing your bushcraft skills with us.
Dave is there a difference between knot strength if i use a running bowline vs a bowline or jam knot with the tag end dropped through when securing your ridge line? Thanks.
That pine cone is a great idea!
It's a Terra Nova, but I can't find it on their website so maybe it's not available in the UK (typical).
wow I've never thought about the pinecone and jamknot idea! thanks!!
sweet hat...Dave you have the best hat collection on youtube
...up options. Thanks for showing us!

we had a similar poncho in the german army against ABC weapons.
thats very cool, at day you can wear it, and at night you can use it as a tent.
Hey MR. Dave, do you ever hold classes or do any intruction in Tennessee? I would love to be part of your class with my son.
where can I get this tarp, i am in the UK so it will be easier and cheaper for me to buy.
Dave, I can't find the bug dope in the online store, is it out of stock?
Love your hat! Where did you get it?
You do a great job bro but also great job on basics! Enjoyed watching!
Where can I find a 7x7 or 8x8 oilcloth tarp with tie out straps?

Dave its so hard waiting for part 2!
Loved the pine cone tip!!
Hey Dave great Vid! Where can i get this oiled cloth Tarp which i've seen in another video? i cant find it in the Pathfinderstore. Greetings from Berlin Germany!
What do you think about pup tents /pup tent style shelters?
So Dave, bottom line, is it worth putting the money into a tarp like this or should I stick with my MSS Gor-tex bivy?
Trying to get myself a oilskin tarp but can't seem to get through to the company :(
dave, are there a lot of rocks in your area
Thanks again for another informative video, Dave!
Would of never thought of the pine cone thank you.
Your hair is looking good man. Makes ya look ten years younger.
Nice Tarp, reminds me of the military poncho, The Army Field Manual
