  • Texas just doubled its battery energy storage power in one year. And it's about to do the same again.
In the first four months of 2024, the rated power of commercially operational battery energy storage systems in ERCOT grew by 955 MW.
That means the total installed rated power of batteries in ERCOT is 4.6 GW (as of the end of April). This is 22x higher than three years ago.
In April, 246 MW of new rated power was commissioned - including ENGIE's Libra BESS, the biggest battery (by rated power) in ERCOT to date.
Already, 19 new battery energy storage systems have been commissioned in ERCOT in 2024 so far.
Systems greater than 1.5 hours in duration now account for 32% of the total installed rated power of batteries. This is up from just 19% a year ago.
This shift towards longer-duration systems enhances the grid’s ability to handle extended periods of high net load.
And these batteries are also better suited to take advantage of Energy arbitrage opportunities.
52% of all new installed rated power between January and April was commissioned in the West Load Zone. This came from seven individual sites.
We expect around 10 GW of new battery energy storage projects to come online in ERCOT by the end of 2025.
This would take total operating capacity to 14 GW - from 4.6 GW today.
Pipeline projections from both the Energy Information Administration (around 16 GW) and ERCOT itself (around 19 GW) are larger than our numbers.
However, we have determined that certain projects listed in these pipeline projections are unlikely to be online by their current planned commission dates.
And batteries are getting bigger. By the end of 2025, up to 20 new batteries with a rated power of at least 200 MW should be commercially operational.
