Tales of the Wizard of Oz: Chowy Mein

- Rankin-Bass released this episode of Tales of the Wizard of Oz in the 1960s called "Chowy Mein." One of the most memorable "lost" episodes ("lost" because of it's political-incorrectness it remains to be left out of many televised releases of the series). It tells of the Chinese detective father/son team of Chowy Mein and his fat number one son, Won Ton. Their catchy "But pop..." , "Don't call me Pop!" dialogue generates oodles of laughs. You can't go wrong with this "lost episode" that took me a couple of days to research from a few forums but couldn't seem to locate it here...until now. Enjoy.
Ha ha, I totally got the Charlie Chan reference.
Whoa! They don’t make cartoons like this anymore, that’s for sure!
this is funny as hell,( call me noble sire)! a straight classic!
My all time favorite cartoon.
I remember watching this on MITV (in Nova Scotia) in the late 80s on weekday mornings... I loved it but man those munchkins pissed me off.
schmoo saw this show when I visited Toronto Canada several times.
Did you ever notice that it takes forever to get to the cartoon? Attention spans are much shorter now.
Thanks-a-mil IGNATZRAT for finding "STUFFED". It's finally the end of a long search
Is that crue/clue?!
Won-Ton
Chowy Mein
Chow Mein and Wonton. LOL
Great old cartroons. Before the age of political-correctness, cartoons made fun of EVERYBODY and no one cared. Italians, Asians, Jews, Christians, Blacks, Whites, Yellows, Polish, Spanish, Eskimoes, whoever...it was no big deal. I'm part Italian. When I was a kid, Italians were always portrayed as mobsters, organ grinders, pizza makers, restaurant owners, and whatever...and ALWAYS with the typical broken English and the hand gestures. I didn't care. No one I knew cared. It was funny.
Playing it by ear, but I believe Wonton is voiced by Billie Mae Richards (who played the title role of Rankin/Bass's Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer)
+Quentin T. That wouldn't surprise me. This show had a number of "Rudolph" voice actors; Larry Mann (Yukon Cornelius) was Rusty Tinman and the Wicked Witch, Alfie Scopp (Charlie in the Box, Fireball the reindeer) was Socrates Strawman, and Paul Kligman (Donner, Comet) was Dandy Lion. I also heard Stan Francis (Santa Claus), Carl Banas (the head elf) and Bernard Cowan do voices as well.
I thought it's Paul Frees.
Naw, Paul Frees didn't start doing voice work for Rankin-Bass until the late 1960s. In this show they just used Canadian voice talent as it was cheaper to do so back then.
My attention span has always been short.
If you're interested---or able---to get WIZARD OF OZ (TALES OF) LOST EPISODES< does anyone out there know of the episode "STUFFED" ?
I’ve never heard of that episode where can I watch it?
Yeah that's a pretty racial portrayal. It's nothing but a harmless-ish Charlie Chan knockoff, but I can see why it was bounced from the line-up.
I'd just like to know which of the "white" characters on this show were portrayed as some sort of paragon of human perfection. Let's face it, they're all clowns on this show.
Exactly!
Rocky and Bullwinkle called and they wanted their Everything back.
you may said that mr. ward called and wanted his everything back
@@Dlmcgregor68 The big difference is the animation and voice talent being Canadian, and using some background music.
You need to watch more of the cartoons of that era! They were all like that. R&B was just one of many.
@@MaskedMan66, yeah; while "Tales of the Wizard of Oz" isn't THAT Jay Ward-esque, at times it's more like a Total Television cartoon (such as "Underdog," "Tennessee Tuxedo" and "King Leonardo") but with funnier gags, along with slightly better animation (done in Canada rather than Mexico).
@@ZakWolf Style of the times. 🙂
thanks for posting
these cartoons were so corny they were funny....
Cheetylicious meow meow saw this on my trips to Toronto.
Won Ton... or One Ton? ;-)
get the joke
Charlie chan
This was funny. i watched these as a kid.
Censoring it is just wicked. In a age of pornography and everything else they want.
Its just forceful people ruling us about what is right and wrong and what is to be viewed.
It is illegal in spirit and law.
Its our right to make light or fun of anyone especially foreigners. Only if done in malice could someone complain.
But Racism
So genius.
You're lucky. Try being Irish-American----being portrayed as a drunk.
John Driscoll often the Irish were portrayed as cops.
That’s racist
Yeah, this episode is pretty cringey with the stereotyped Chinese characters. Even when I watched this episode in the 1990s, I found it cringey.
Wooooowwww...that was racist.😳
Lol
LMAO. 😂😂😂😂
