As someone who drives a 30 kWh LEAF but has an '85 4Runner in the garage, this is so incredible to see and hear about. It seems like yesterday (but it wasn't) that you started asking questions on the LEAF forum. You get all the points for actually executing the conversion and getting the peripheral systems working. Can't wait to see where you take it!
Great video. Please more content like this. EV 4x4 conversions are fascinating and show us all what’s possible.
Congrats to Jimmy!! Takes a lot of grit to get these one of a kind jobs done. Nice! Take two partly toast vehicle and pop out a decent off road-er!
This is fooking cool!!! People like this guy are pacing the way forward for everyone else to follow. Thanks, mate! And thanks to the channel for exposing the viability of these projects and the technology to begin with. You guys rock. I want to do this with a Tesla motor and battery packs now!!!
Alright,but please tag me❤
I've been waiting to see somebody do this...
Great conversion! Plus you can scale up the batteries down the track.
Or even sell the whole system batteries plus motors and buy a much better/powerful one later
Great build!
Awesome. Love it!
This needs to go on taming tumbleweed surely!?! Nice conversion - lots of torque at low speed so great for off roading!
This is a really nice scrapper innovative ev, will love to meet with you in person
Man this makes me jealous. Australia really fumbling behind everyone else at this point, eyes on a modded electric cruiser!
This is awesome
Damn... I love this thing 😍
awesome my goal is a boat conversion using similar components.
is that a Studebaker Avanti in the background?
Cool truck.
The way around power steering is to install manual steering components.
Sooo coool
Very cool.
Very nice. would like to see how this is done. I drive 66miles a day.
how many miles does it get to a KW? cheers
Wonder if he could increase battery to increase range?
We have a 2013 Nissan Xterra 2WD. Can we add electric drive to the front wheels to make it a 4x4? It would be just to keep from getting stuck and rock crawling at lower speeds. If it worked, imagine all the 2x4 trucks and SUVs that could be converted to 4x4! How could we do it?
I hope you know how to code because that kind of system hasn't been done, and I don't think it's a straight forward process at all... You would need a way to disengage and re-engage the electric motor , then you either would need separate controls for it or reprogram the old one to detect when its engaged and how much voltage to balance the ICE and electric power. And space will be an issue as you're trying to make an hybrid out of a pure ICE vehicule.
I guess with a small forklift motor, a good gear ratio, a small battery pack somewhere in the car, and some tinkering with the controller it might be possible.
But yes it would be very handy, and I'm sure someone smart can figure it out. However it would specific to each car I think, so difficult to expand it to many vehicule
Can you share total cost?
Cool car, but the range would be better if he would have left the transmission in it!
Lol this is where that F100 started
Is that's Cletuss brother from another Motha!
Nice
Very cool and smart kid. Love the innovation going on here.
Under 100 kilometres is real low. Why not use the space where the fuel tanks were?
Love this. Want to convert my 06' Range Rover to EV!
Haha man I have/had the same truck! Do it! That was my plan before it got stolen unfortunately. Leafs are so cheap now
I want to do the same to my 09 Range Rover
Have a good day everyone
I love me an engine for fun cars. But i will very much consider an ev conversion to my suv. It's good to carry my work equipment but god damn it has shitty mpg.
Has anyone done this with an FJ60?
15'000 - 20'000.-?? Impossible in Switzerland. Besides for road worthiness you've to let it check for electric safety which already costs you 10'000.- +.

Did you guys have a West Side Story style singing fight with Out of Spec at the event?
No signing - just a friendly conversation...
Nice. Why didn’t you use a Tesla ?
I love to see this kind of an electric swap! They’re limited right now but soon enough they’ll be as potent as new factory EV’s.
As soon as they become a viable alternative to a new ev, the government will ban ev conversions.
Using the leaf system made it pretty simple. The downside is the small battery pack. But as more electric vehicles get out there, junkyard drive trains will become far more common.
Tesla swaps are very popular and usually get 200 mile ranges depending on the vehicle and configuration. They're just expensive and difficult to do since Tesla's are very proprietary vehicles. Leaf's are cheap and built using more common parts and standards.
Been wanting to do this to my 225k mile silverado or my 96 chevy s10
Yes - I think older trucks are perfect donor vehicles for an EV conversion! I have an '02 Ford Ranger with nearly 300k on the clock that I want to convert. Maybe the S10 would be a better choice for you since it is so much lighter weight and would give you better driving range?
The best conversion would have been duel motor (tesla model 3 perm mag) . Each motor would basically be in front & back of the solid axles. So a dummy solid axle that houses the motor and differential of the model 3 drive unit. This means no drive shafts! , no t case , nothing on the chassis except batteries, inverters, and wires. Even more crazy would be 4 ev motors. One per wheel , so no diff at all.
You could achieve this by putting a 60V electric motor where the rear drive shaft is and 15 lead acid batteries in the bed. You can run errands in a golf cart too.
I would love to know how much better the brakes are with the electric booster.
The brakes are really strong! I also upgraded to stainless steel lines and ceramic pads. It stops super well!
It seem it'll be cheaper to turn your petrol car into an EV than buying a fully electric from anywhere else.
If you got the time and the knowledge to do it yourself, then yes, definitely. But otherwise, not always, especially if you want decent range
One or two more Leaf battery packs, and he'll be able to go places.
Fun fact: in the original novel version of Jurassic Park the park SUV's were electric converted Land Cruisers. For the movie they chose Ford Explorers.
Came here to say the same thing!!!
Epic!

"it is a LC and it will run forever" Um, the point with that statement is the ENGINE running. The powertrain running. Otherwise, you might as well have picked up a junked Nissan Xterra or Pathfinder and kept the family components together. (Leaf batteries and so on) To each their own. 🙂
Still has the bones, suspension, steering, transfer case etc that all added to the legendary reliability.
I had a similar reaction. The easiest way to make an unreliable land cruiser is to "make it better" with mods. There are some things that will last but there is a lot in there that will always be a project
Actually, the 80-series notorious for blowing headgaskets and having the transmission fail. Of all Land Cruisers it is by far the least reliable. There is so much more to a vehicle than an engine and transmission, and the rest of the LC is built with top notch quality. The axles are super strong and there are a million aftermarket parts suppliers for upgrades
@@EVSwap failed transmissions? first I've heard of that. The automatics are regarded as some of the longest lived 4 speeds out there. My og a343f seems to be pretty durable with 335k miles. I know 1st to 2nd can be problematic on the 343f but only if you don't keep up on fluid intervals. Head gasket (singular)? True. But once replaced you're done.
15-20k to only go 60 miles yea completely not worth it at all
He lost me at, "The range of this is about 60 miles." Cool concept though!
30kw though. That's nothing for an ev. 500 watt/hr per mile is poor but the 80 series is known as a power eater.
@@PatrickRich yeah some PHEVs have batteries that are nearing that capacity these days. Wonder how hard it would be to integrate another Leaf pack into the mix and how much that would add to the overall weight of this rig. I recently moved around a similar pack (think it was a 42kwh model or whatever), and that seemed to be like 1000lbs by itself.
@@ALMX5DP yeah the plan is to add more batteries. My 30kwh pack is 603lbs, more capacity more weight. Another reason I chose an LC is for the payload capacity.
Clear proof of the Toyota brainwash right here. "It's a Toyota Land Cruiser, it'll run forever!" is said just before he said everything was "junk" and changed the Toyota powertrain to a Nissan powertrain.....mind blowing.
Lol, can't make this crap up....while typing this, it's on TV that Toyota is recalling it's EV suv because the wheels are falling off🤣 yeah, ok, go Toyota!
It had over 300k on it….
@@icecoast that's not "forever"
@@shiftmotorsports9803 true, but compared to most other cars, it’s pretty dang good
@@icecoast I agree it's nothing to sneeze at, but, it's a far cry from the 1 million miles Toyota owners think their vehicles can go. We also don't know what needed replacing to get to 300k. Plenty of other brands pushing over 300k
Sorry. But that does not make any sense.
Having a fun project doesn’t make any sense to you?
yeah could atleast put two more nissan leaf batteries for atleast 90kwh
@@shamarerskine3987 that’s still possible, but in the mean time he has a running driving vehicle.
@@ALMX5DP not if you spend $15-20K on something that doesn't do Anything right... Useless
30 miles of range lmao 🤣😂🤣
