After a new battery is installed, is there anything that needs to be done to reset all of the codes to have all of the lights on the dash go out or does the car do a system check and find everything to be ok and go back to normal by itself?
Generally the car will start right up with a good battery. HOWEVER, most people do not insert the orange plug correctly the first time the replace the hybrid battery. There are 3 steps to inserting the plug. 1) Insert plug 2) flip lever up 3) press lever STRAIGHT DOWN towards the floor (it moves about 1/4"). If you don't do step 3 there is no way the car will go into READY mode and start.

I fixed the high-voltage plug position, which made most of the warning lights go out -- except the Red Triangle of Death which was still glowing brightly, mocking my efforts at home car repair. After some searching, I found someone suggesting that I step hard on the brake and hold down the start button instead of just pressing it. Voilà! The red triangle is gone and everything looks good now.
@@dmellinger4887 How HARD you press on the brake pedal has nothing do do with it. The triangle of death will go out after 4-5 restarts of the car after you corrected the problem with the orange plug.
I am a 53 year old woman with very limited mechanical experience. I replaced a bad cell in a 2007 Prius by watching this video (and several others which don't even begin to compare!) This was the most thorough one I found and very accurate. I completed the job without getting electrocuted and have $30 in the cell I replaced. The quote from my local Toyota dealer was $4000 and just a refurbished battery pack from my local parts store was $1399 plus tax. Thanks so much for the wonderful video!
i take my hat off. I've Empowered my girl on how to change their tires and minor mechanical stuff. They also took a mechanics course at Jr. College which so happened to be taught by their uncle who is shop foreman at Lexus. He didn't give them any slack. My first thought while watching this was, “this guy’s done this before.” :-) My OMG meter kept going up until a couple minutes in, where I was thinking, “this is not a DIY project.” It would take me a day to get that out, and forget about putting it all back together. My only criticism would be about him not wearing gloves when disconnecting the power. But he obviously knows what he’s doing.

I use cloth parts bags with drawstrings so I can attach the hardware to each part that the hardware goes to or write on the bag which part the hardware goes to. I rarely get to finish a project like this the same week that I start. Organizing the hardware like this keeps me from having to remember where everything goes.
This video was EXTREMELY helpful in the step by step process of removing the hybrid battery. I am a complete novice when it comes to electronics and cars and with a little youtube research (including this video) I was able to take out the battery, find a bad cell, replace the cell with a new one i bought on eBay, and put it all back together. The car runs perfect again, the triangle of death is gone, and I spent $35 on a cell vs. the $3,400 the Toyota dealer wanted to charge. Thank you for doing Prius owners such a huge favor!
Be careful if just replacing a few modules. That may be only a short term fix, since the next worst modules could fail in weeks/months. In the industry we call this "whack a mole" since you attack a problem then another one "pops up".
Thank you for the notice. The car has 140k miles and I've had it for 12 years. I feel like I've gotten so much out of it so at some point if I have to just replace the whole battery with a refurb I'd be fine with that.
...or buy a cheap used Prius even if the battery is shot, as I'm pipe dreaming of, and just let the gas engine do more of the work for however many months it takes to afford a new battery.
Hi mate. Yes generally it is recommended you replace the whole battery, as the other modules also become weak over time. This is why buying a reconditioned battery isn't a good idea unless you want to sell your car. Reconditioner battery have the bad cell (which causes the battery to malfunction) removed. However they do not remove other cells which may also corrupt a few months later. Thus it can become an ongoing issues. So it's best to replace the whole battery
I struggled mightily a year ago with my 06, but got er done With a lot of extra work removing stuff I didn't have to. Today I had the battery out of the 05, setting on a.kitchen chair in an hour and a half by myself. Thenks for the good video.
Great video! One question: any idea why there is 1 single black 4-bar (higher grade?) 12mm bolt on the driver's side front holding the battery down? All the rest are 2-bar silver. Perhaps for more shearing resistance closest to the battery terminal? That's my only guess.

I just wanted to thank you for this easy to follow simple video. I had to take my battery out due to a couple of cell issues and to take it in and have them do it in the shop was a pricey but it would be a 1/4 of the cost just to take in the battery. I am a grandma and did it all by myself. Other videos made it look/sound much more complicated. Thank you so much!

@@TurfToken2222 Most places that sell replacement Hybrid batteries REQUIRE you to give them the old battery as a core or they will charge you extra. If seller doesn't want the core. take it to a Toyota dealer or local auto recycler (yunkyard) for proper recycling or sell it on craigslist. Someone will take it.

@7:16 Using 8 mm to remove the high voltage connector while uninsulated left hand rests on the battery cover(metal) surprised me...but @1:04, I remember he removed the orange power shut off from the High voltage battery..This gives me clear reason why he is not cooked... and works without high voltage gloves...Well done..
I'd strongly suggest being extra careful around everything with the battery, at least the first time you work with any connection on it - particularly if the connection is orange colored. I think the main disconnect significantly depowers the HV battery, but the voltages between the terminals and ground/the case are still large and even if it didn't kill the installer, a short could cause failure of the remaining working parts of your battery! I carry my DC voltmeter (you can get inexpensive ones at Harborfreight or better ones elsewhere like that red multimeter.) Watch some videos on how to measure DC voltage before you do any of this project, and test between the connection and several places (other connectors, the case of the battery, the frame of the car) to insure no voltage, before you touch.
Great video. I cannot decide what to do....try to find and replace bad cell(s) OR replace the hybrid battery completely. My dilemma is: I replace a bad cell and then 6 months I have to replace another, then another as time goes on. I don't want to remove this battery but one time. It's 80 pounds, bulky and I have a bad back. Since I want to keep my 2008 Prius with 171K (miles I put on it) I'm thinking replace the entire hybrid battery. Thoughts? Thanks.
You cannot replace a single cell. The battery has 28 modules, each module has 6 cells and cannot be broken down any further than the module level. That being said, replacing individual modules (especially if you don't know how to property test them) is a waste of time. You WILL be doing it again if you go this route. People in our industry call this process "whack a mole". If you want to save some money and get good at removing/installing the battery and stressing your back, go ahead, give it a try but we don't recommend this process. If you want no headaches, replace the entire battery with a brand new genuine Toyota battery. While expensive, this is much better than any refurbished/reconditioned/rebuilt battery no matter what the warranty claims offered by the vendor. When it comes to hybrid batteries, new is always best and least likely to cause the car to fail again.

I bought a 2008 Prius with the description bad Hybrid Battery. towed to my house. It wont start it lights up and shows the red Triangle on dashboard small car on middle monitor. i replaced the 12V battery it started right up drove it backward then forward few yards and shut it off. tried after 10 minutes it wont start, all check engine lights on dash are lit. "There is a problem" was lit on the monitor. if the Hybrid battery is drained how can i charge it? should i have driven the car and recharge the hybrid battery during? i don't have diagnostic tools not sure whats next maybe its a bad connection maybe bad cells. On my 2006 Prius,my left turn signal, high beam light, and parking/emergency brake lights don't display. However, they are all functional. What do you think is the issue?
We were about to call Green Bean Battery and spend the $1500 but now after watching this and a few other videos I'm about halfway into taking out my battery, and if it's as easy as testing voltage and replacing one of those units that slide out then damm, saves me a lot.
If you remove the orange safety plug and wait 5 minutes there is no high voltage anywhere. It is safe to work on the battery. The two orange cables from "the car side" have no power, power goes from the battery to them.

I managed not removing the rear seats and got the bolts out with a mag socket, gap was big enough on mine... monitored pack voltages w/ torque app once engine started up. Shut it off for a bit, restarted, triangle gone, took it for a drive...what a relief...oh yeah that orange plug wasn't fully locked (up position had to slide a smidge further down to lock it)..its definitely not obvious until you try it a few times to get the feel of it...lol
We have a 2009 Prius and all the lights came on while I was driving and the ac turned off too. And it went into neutral so I had to manually put it back on drive could that be the battery ? We’ve had it since 09 and have never changed it . But recently the screen went out as well . Thanks for showing me where the battery is.
are all the bolts pretty much the same length? Like all the 10mm, then all the 14mm? I'm going to make a bag list for all the bolts but if I can just keep them separate in 3 bins instead of a bunch more then that would be great. Thanks.
I suggest you just buy a box of dixie cups and put similar bolts from each step into dixie cups. When you go to put everything back together it will be easy because of the grouping. Tip; when installing the brackets, install all bolts a few turns before tightening any of them...the brackets move around a bit so you can line up all the holes.
Yeah I know the old leave the bolts loose so that you can get everything lined up with ease trick. Lol, Great advice with the Dixie cups as well. Thanks.
Absolutely NOT. The Hybrid battery is integral to how the Prius operates and is even used to "start" the gas engine. Without a Hybrid battery you can only put the car in Neutral (requires 12V battery) and then you can push the car around.

Those are not drills, they are impact drivers designed to remove bolts and screws. I like Milwaukee and Snap On power tools. Milwaukee are available at Home Depot and online. www.milwaukeetool.com/ Snap on tools are high quality but very expensive and usually sold direct to shops by "tool trucks".
One more tip, if you are going to take the time to diy a battery repair take a moment to remove the trunk latch while you have the 10mm in your hand. It would really stink to lock the rear hatch with no batteries in the car.

With the proper maintenance schedule on a Prius 2007, what can one expect to see in regard to average mileage before Hybrid Battery replacement, and/or Inverter replacement? I imagine with this inverter Toyota/ owners experience few problems.
Inverters rarely fail on a Prius. Batteries last 100 to 300k miles, but it depends on where and how you drive the car and to some extent the age of the batteries. In California they have a 150k mile warranty so they are designed to last at least that long. Overall the Prius is one of the most reliable cars you can buy and has the lowest total cost of ownership OF ANY CAR based on a life of 200k miles. You can confirm this via Consumer Reports research or talk to Taxi/Uber drivers. If there was a cheaper car to operate the taxi industry would be all over it.
Thank you, Interesting makes sense, I imagine this average is mainly based on temps/ extreme temperatures, California being a mild state that it is, one should expect an increase in longer battery life. 150, 200 to 300k miles this is exceptional. Considering 2010, 2012-2015.

why you open the cargo side panel and the rear set frame attachment screws, I did not get it, I think, those are not required to open. You can take the battery without it.
Couldn't manufacturers have made it more complicated? I mean, a bolt here, a bolt there, a nother over there, remove back sets. The last thing missing would be, "...to remove the battery pack, you need to remove the tires, and check the engine oil, first -_- " Only if it is meant for people who are -do it yourselves- not no try it. Why not just long bolts to hold the pack in place and then slide it back without removing side panels?
There’s a humorous video on UA-cam showing how to replace a headlamp bulb. He starts by removing the passenger side front wheel and winds up dismantling a good deal of the front end of the car.
Just consider this after battery removal, you test individual cells to find the bad one. You replace the bad cell, install entire battery system into car. You do not have to replace entire battery bank, just the bad cell, or cells.

Yes, pretty much everything has to come out to get the cover off (you can leave the battery in place though), however, I suggest you remove the BATTERY FAN first on right side of trunk area (behind panel) if the fan is not too dirty, the battery itself is probably not dirty either.
BoulderHybrids thanks. I just cleaned the fan. wasn't very dirty. Do you think it's necessary to open the battery and inspect between the cells and try to clean any dust out of there? Or do most people just clean the fans once in a while?

My dilemma is: I replace a bad cell and then 6 months I have to replace another, then another as time goes on. I don't want to remove this battery but one time. It's 80 pounds, bulky and I have a bad back. Since I want to keep my 2008 Prius with 171K (miles I put on it) I'm thinking replace the entire hybrid battery.

You cannot replace a single cell. The battery has 28 modules, each module has 6 cells and cannot be broken down any further than the module level. That being said, replacing individual modules (especially if you don't know how to property test them) is a waste of time. You WILL be doing it again if you go this route. People in our industry call this process "whack a mole". If you want to save some money and get good at removing/installing the battery and stressing your back, go ahead, give it a try but we don't recommend this process.
If you want no headaches, replace the entire battery with a brand new genuine Toyota battery. While expensive, this is much better than any refurbished/reconditioned/rebuilt battery no matter what the warranty claims offered by the vendor. When it comes to hybrid batteries, new is always best and least likely to cause the car to fail again.

I bought a 2008 Prius with the description bad Hybrid Battery. towed to my house. It wont start it lights up and shows the red Triangle on dashboard small car on middle monitor. i replaced the 12V battery it started right up drove it backward then forward few yards and shut it off. tried after 10 minutes it wont start, all check engine lights on dash are lit. "There is a problem" was lit on the monitor. if the Hybrid battery is drained how can i charge it? should i have driven the car and recharge the hybrid battery during? i don't have diagnostic tools not sure whats next maybe its a bad connection maybe bad cells. We were about to call Green Bean Battery and spend the $1500 but now after watching this and a few other videos I'm about halfway into taking out my battery, and if it's as easy as testing voltage and replacing one of those units that slide out then damm, saves me a lot.

If you remove the orange safety plug and wait 5 minutes there is no high voltage anywhere. It is safe to work on the battery. The two orange cables from "the car side" have no power, power goes from the battery to them.

I managed not removing the rear seats and got the bolts out with a mag socket, gap was big enough on mine... monitored pack voltages w/ torque app once engine started up. Shut it off for a bit, restarted, triangle gone, took it for a drive...what a relief...oh yeah that orange plug wasn't fully locked (up position had to slide a smidge further down to lock it)..its definitely not obvious until you try it a few times to get the feel of it...lol
How can you tell if you have a bad hybrid battery cell? Do you remove the hybrid battery to check that? Not getting good gas milage on 2007 Prius..
Look into Priuschat forums. There is a wealth of info there, broken down by different generations of Prius.
The battery will be swollen and it will look different than the rest of the cell, my dad and I changed it out together.

We have a 2009 Prius and all the lights came on while I was driving and the ac turned off too. And it went into neutral so I had to manually put it back on drive could that be the battery ? We’ve had it since 09 and have never changed it . But recently the screen went out as well . Thanks for showing me where the battery is.
are all the bolts pretty much the same length? Like all the 10mm, then all the 14mm? I'm going to make a bag list for all the bolts but if I can just keep them separate in 3 bins instead of a bunch more then that would be great. Thanks.
I suggest you just buy a box of dixie cups and put similar bolts from each step into dixie cups. When you go to put everything back together it will be easy because of the grouping. Tip; when installing the brackets, install all bolts a few turns before tightening any of them...the brackets move around a bit so you can line up all the holes.

With the battery removed will the car start run and drive without it ? Strictly off the gas engine ?
Absolutely NOT. The Hybrid battery is integral to how the Prius operates and is even used to "start" the gas engine. Without a Hybrid battery you can only put the car in Neutral (requires 12V battery) and then you can push the car around.
@@BoulderHybrids hmm weird because a video on UA-cam with a black one that had no battery and the guy was on the highway doing 75 mph 🤷🏻♂️ they said it's not like the Tesla's where you have to have a hybrid battery ..... but I will keep you posted as I'm going to try derbying one so when I get the battery out I'll let you know how it goes

Those are not drills, they are impact drivers designed to remove bolts and screws. I like Milwaukee and Snap On power tools. Milwaukee are available at Home Depot and online. www.milwaukeetool.com/ Snap on tools are high quality but very expensive and usually sold direct to shops by "tool trucks".

One more tip, if you are going to take the time to diy a battery repair take a moment to remove the trunk latch while you have the 10mm in your hand. It would really stink to lock the rear hatch with no batteries in the car.

With the proper maintenance schedule on a Prius 2007, what can one expect to see in regard to average mileage before Hybrid Battery replacement, and/or Inverter replacement? I imagine with this inverter Toyota/ owners experience few problems.
Inverters rarely fail on a Prius. Batteries last 100 to 300k miles, but it depends on where and how you drive the car and to some extent the age of the batteries. In California they have a 150k mile warranty so they are designed to last at least that long.
Overall the Prius is one of the most reliable cars you can buy and has the lowest total cost of ownership OF ANY CAR based on a life of 200k miles. You can confirm this via Consumer Reports research or talk to Taxi/Uber drivers. If there was a cheaper car to operate the taxi industry would be all over it.
Thank you, Interesting makes sense, I imagine this average is mainly based on temps/ extreme temperatures, California being a mild state that it is, one should expect an increase in longer battery life. 150, 200 to 300k miles this is exceptional. Considering 2010, 2012-2015.

why you open the cargo side panel and the rear set frame attachment screws, I did not get it, I think, those are not required to open. You can take the battery without it.

Couldn't manufacturers have made it more complicated? I mean, a bolt here, a bolt there, a nother over there, remove back sets. The last thing missing would be, "...to remove the battery pack, you need to remove the tires, and check the engine oil, first -_- " Only if it is meant for people who are -do it yourselves- not no try it. Why not just long bolts to hold the pack in place and then slide it back without removing side panels?

Just consider this after battery removal, you test individual cells to find the bad one. You replace the bad cell, install entire battery system into car. You do not have to replace entire battery bank, just the bad cell, or cells.

No, the hose is just a vent. The entire Prius battery is air cooled so there are no liquids to deal with.

Yes, pretty much everything has to come out to get the cover off (you can leave the battery in place though), however, I suggest you remove the BATTERY FAN first on right side of trunk area (behind panel) if the fan is not too dirty, the battery itself is probably not dirty either.
BoulderHybrids thanks. I just cleaned the fan. wasn't very dirty. Do you think it's necessary to open the battery and inspect between the cells and try to clean any dust out of there? Or do most people just clean the fans once in a while?

Is it possible to drive the car without a batterypack?
Absolutely not. The hybrid battery is integral to the operation of the Prius. No Hybrid battery, no go. You could drive the car without the 12V battery (if you jump start the car) but it is not really recommended.
They can't make it simple as pulling the seat back and unbolt a few nuts holding it down. We have to tear the whole car apart. Lmao.
