Little late to the party but this review was great. You brought up some really valid points. My concern were also surrounding the strap system. I just bought the medium camera cube and was hoping to use this bag on an upcoming trip in march up north to Yellowknife but I’m going to hold off now. Thanks for doing this and the honesty. I’d love to! I have a backlog right now but will add it to the list for consideration! I do have a smaller Patagonia soft sided travel briefcase that I will review soon!
To each their own, but I disagree with the point on comfort. I like how the straps aren’t overpadded like other bags and if the straps feel uncomfortable that’s what the sternum and hip straps are for.

I hate bulky straps. They are always in the way. They annoy me so much. I want it to be comfortable, but I do not want big thick straps and hip belts in the way. Some ultralight backpacks manage this. When I backpack I use a Durston gear backpack, and even though the straps and hip belt are thin, it's still comfortable, so it is possible. Hopefully Peak will get better at it.
Yeah I tend to like the idea of tuckable straps a lot more than the actual experience or tuck/stow straps. Not sure anyone has truly nailed it yet! I’ll have to check out Durston gear cuz I never heard of them!
I really quite like Peak Designs and this Review really goes through the nitty-gritty, I feel like Peak Designs forget that their bags that actually hold 45L worth of stuff and gear that is always heavy, they need to have correct adequate straps and padding especially when not wearing a coat,.
Yes exactly. They make great products and with a touch more work on this part, they would be unbeatable.

@@KendrickDischCreative I'm pretty sure I'm getting the Peak Design 45L to 65L travel duffel. Not as many organization options or water bottle pockets but I like the flexibility and it should work for me. I think that one came out after the travel backpack so there look to be some advancements on the design
@@elsizzle2000hi! I actually also consider the Duffelpack over this one, but the problem is when I bring my laptop with me. Yes I can just use a bag specially for laptop but it is a little bit concern when it's packed with so many stuffs

@@KendrickDischCreative The comfort, which you explained with very good detail. One more thing I don't really like is the full side open, which needs more effort to take the camera out than those partial side open.
How would you compare it to the Black Ember Citadel R2 as it seems very similar?

Love the real life usage reviews - because PEEK wants to always be sleek n stylish it starts to lose some usability for more heavy duty usage - since the PEEK bag itself is so good i bet we’ll see some people custom modding the straps so you get better long haul capability

For grins, I ran a 5.11 nylon gun belt through the 45L to see if comfort improved with a more capable hip belt. For those who don't know, 5.11 gun belts are super stiff but are comfortable for most who use them because the materials are nylon vs. leather. Being a girthier person (me), the more capable hip belt made the 45L 100% more comfortable because I could get the weight of the shoulder straps more balanced, and the weight of the bag riding on my hips like a bag of this size should be. I could easily take the bag to a seamstress and have them stitch in a loaner hip belt from a different bag, but now I'm modifying (killing the warranty) and spending more money for an already expensive bag. If I keep it and don't do mods, it will be relegated to a 2-3 night overnight bag that carries socks and t-shirts. Because weight-wise, that is about all this bag can handle due to the carry system it currently has.
hi! nice video :) have you tried to fold those magnetic wings? (hide them under the main back line). Back of the backpack is still flat that way, but your back is more distant from the laptop and the whole thing is way more comfortable.
sebulasss thanks for the comment. Yeah I tried that but it honestly more about how the straps worked at the top.. the rivet system wasn’t great for comfort. The folded back wings did help a little but not enough to compensate for the slim not padded straps.

Hey Ryan, thanks for watching and leaving a question! I haven't found one of these that I have both personally tested and can recommend, especially because they are expensive investments and I don't take that responsibility lightly.
Some of the ones that have recently caught my eye and I'd like to review are the Peter McKinnon Nomatic backpack because it does have the sections for clothes and camera stuff... seems like a good one.
I'm also very interested in the Shimoda Action X30 or X50 for more rugged travel.
One of the techniques I've used a lot is to take a smaller more portable camera bag, and just stick it into a regular travel pack. It worked pretty well for me before I got too obsessed about bags.

Great review and insight. I love PD products and how so many of them are fantastic functionally, and they look great! For me, the Traveler 45L fell short in one category: fitment-comfort. To be fair to PD, I’m a bigger guy. I have a broader shoulder, a bigger chest, and a mid-section (gut) than the average bear. Also, in fairness to PD, I read before I purchased that the strap comfort was a let a down for some. With all that being said, I gave the PD Traveler 45L a try because of its reputation, the ecosystem I already invested in, and its solid product lineup.
Comfort was a real issue for me. I purposely loaded the 45L with a large camera cube and filled the cube with mirrorless camera equipment, minus my 70-200 and 150-600. It contained a few primes (105mm or less), no tripod, and no accessories other than what would fit in the large camera cube. I'm not exaggerating when I say this; the bag hurt my shoulders. The issue with the sternum strap is true. With weight in the bag, the strap pulls the shoulder straps in. I adjusted it up and down, alternating where they pinched between the neck and chest. I tried to alleviate this by using the hip belt. The hip belt was too short. The hip belt that is sold separately for other packs in their line-up has an overall length of 69", so I anticipated the 45L being somewhere in the ballpark of the same length. I was wrong. I needed 48-50" max, and I was short by about 6-8" in length. Because PD uses a non-standard buckle system, there was no chance of purchasing an extender. Again, in fairness to PD, I should have checked with them directly on length because sometimes, depending on the brand, I have found hip belts can be an issue for me. However, more often than not (98%), hip belts are long enough. The bottom line is that if you are a bigger person, the strap and belt system may not fit you well. This is a shame because the pack is a fantastic backpack overall. One of the reasons I chose it is its versatility, AND the bag doesn’t look like I am heading to Mt Everest wearing a mountaineering pack.

@@KendrickDischCreative I ultimately went with an F-Stop backpack as my versatile travel bag. For a versatile travel bag and to stay within flight size restrictions, I recommend the AJNA or Tilopa. I'm also a huge Mystery Ranch fan, but you have to be careful which one you select because some models are a little more utilitarian than others.

Osprey is better. I tested both. The new FairPoint 40 2022. The laptop issue has been fixed. The airflow padding on the back and straps is just amazingly compared to Peek design. Peek design main problem remains the back padding (almost inexistent which is a big no for a 45 l backpack!) and the thin straps. Everyone complains about that yet Peek design completely ignores them for years. Osprey is also half of the price! I agree Peek locks better but if the straps cut your shoulders at full load then its game over for me and i suspect for many.

I ended up going with the 10L sling V2. I was worried it would be too small for my needs, but it’s surprisingly big. I am using 2 bags when trying to bring everything so not the best scenario. (My general backpack with dividers) But I do love the sling. Thanks again.

I never weighed it. It was heavy. Maybe I could guess in the 40-50 pounds range...
PD are always more about style over comfort, for short use they are great, but for hiking? I would go with other brand. I think of PD as an urban bags and that is why I like them since I don't have to carry them for a long time. But for real outdoor? I prefer other brands.
Yeah they aren't the good choice for outdoor hiking, but one would hope a Travel bag would be comfortable for Traveling.

I'm afraid my answer will be unsatisfactory... I switch so often that I don't have a go to... but the one I use the most is the Tenba DNA messenger 15 Slim, (ua-cam.com/video/lW3pJUVj6RA/v-deo.html). For just straight backpacks, I like my North Face Surge Transit (ua-cam.com/video/nI-sudaTDC0/v-deo.html) and for camera gear, I'm most often using the MindShift Gear First Light (ua-cam.com/video/3Y8g2mCjN5w/v-deo.html). But I'm always on the hunt the best bag! Never ending search...

Good review on the peak bag. The only big deal breaker to me would be the harness straps. They could improve that.
On the mindshift can you hide the harness straps? If I have to check it in, that stuff needs to be tucked away and would be a dealer breaker if I couldn’t hide them.
Hey there Kay, unfortunately you can’t hide the straps or tuck them anywhere. That does make checking it pretty undoable. But then again, I wouldn’t be checking it anyway due to the camera gear. When I can travel again I’m going to try the peak design medium cube insert stuffed into my Gregory Praxus bag (review on this channel), which does have stoppable straps. Anyway, what other bags are you looking at?
Kendrick Disch Creative I’m looking to travel more lightly (no camera equipment). I have a 65L bag from rei I got cheap on sale but I’m looking to move down to 40 to 45 liter bags. So far I’ve been looking at osprey stuff specifically the porter and farpoint. I saw some eagle creek ones but they don’t have hide away straps, however they look more comfortable than the ospreys.
This peak one seem to check off some of the boxes and I like that you can expand it from 35L to 45L. But for that price I would like to have a more comfortable harness system.
With heavy load you just need to use integrated hip belt. Without it, you will always suffer, regardless of the backpack?
maybe...I think it's much smarter to wear the waist belt (my opinion has shifted in more recent years) but I also have other backpacks that I've loaded up with similar gear and haven't used a waist belt and they are more comfortable straps.

Just to clarify: those pockets to hide away the straps were uncomfortable when you were wearing the backpack? So they don't lie flat against the back of the bag?
a lot of bags of a mesh or foam backing in that spot and it really helps conform to your back... this one didn't feel like it had any conformity and felt more like a brick with thin backpack straps. (true, I probably had too much stuff in it), but I've carried a lot of backpacks and this one wasn't comfortable up against my back.
I got it but didn’t use it yet for what’s going on now, I wished that i saw your review back then. I would use it anyway for it’s price.

Fair enough, but from my research for a new backpack I'm always coming across this bag due to it's size and the fact it can hold a lot of camera gear.
I'd still get this over that Nomatic Peter one.

I have had 1 of these for over a year and I love it, I have none of the issues this guy is talking about and I recently bought a second one in black cause the only issue I have found is my first one i used as a daily carry bag as it got a little dirty from daily use it is very comfortable. I did carry it every day back and forth to work 30lbs+ this guy is chronic complainer
I appreciate your comment but your experience doesn’t translate to everyone else. Sometimes people have different opinions and that’s ok. You don’t have to criticize people if they don’t agree with you. I am not a chronic complainer and if you watch more of my videos you will see that. I’m glad you enjoy the backpack. Not everyone does.
Stanley Schubert I have this bag as my first travel bag and I do really like it, but after using bags with better harness systems I can’t go back to it. It is uncomfortable. It may not seem uncomfortable but it is, I guarantee you once you get used to load lifters and more padded hip belts and strap height adjusters, you won’t want a bag that doesn’t have them. Peak Design is nowhere near top quality.
Kendrick Disch Creative I started with the Aer and then got this bag and have never looked back. From Phoenix to NYC, San Juan PR, and all over Spain it has been amazing.

Kendrick Disch Creative I used it a few times. It became the bug out bag that lives in my car. The Peak Design 40 L is my road warrior. Probably 20 flights.
What they make is a travel camera bag. PD don’t make custom-made travel bags for you every day and day by day.

Kendrick Disch Creative I currently have the same sling you have but if I overload it, meaning more than one mirrorless camera and an extra lens, it becomes very uncomfortable for long periods. I tried the everyday backpack and quickly sold it. I just wish they would make the straps a tad bit beefier. More padding would make a world of difference.

Too pricey and not worth the price. I returend mine. Topo has better products and uses much better materials.

Well of course if you stuff the bag the straps are going to feel weak and you're gonna feel like they're digging into yor shoulders. Also, the compression will come undone if you stuff it, that's just common sense. I think you could do a way better job with this video. I'd respectfully recommend you be more organised in terms of not knowing what to say and using "um" instead.

So super useful knowing the bag, despite being super cool, is actually pointless if it breaks your shoulders after travel! Thanks 😊

I only have the 10L Sling to compare, but I think since it's much lighter it's harder to notice that it might be uncomfortable. What other bags have you tried? With so many people loving their backpacks I have to assume most people disagree with you and me.
