This was super interesting! My favorite genre of video games is probably rhythm games, not because I like music but its one of the few genres where you can really feel yourself mastering a system, like you said.
I'm also an INTP and I wanted to say thank you for your videos. You have a unique understanding of what it's like to be our type with the ability to explain it clearly.
Do you think INTP's are the most likely type to get into video games? I was hooked on Runescape for years, then lost interest. Do any other INTP's relate to this?
+INTP Files I grew up with Runescape and didn't fully quit until late 2014 after I got the quets cape on OSRS. I still get the urge to go back, but I consider the kid in me to be satisfied
I remember watching my older brother play games like you mentioned you did. I would play when he was gone though. FF7, Spyro, Rachet and Clank, San Andreas, Butikai 3. Burn out. Then I got my own Gamecube and SSB Melee took up an unholy amount of my childhood. Sonic Adventure 2 battle and METAL ARMs. Such a fun game! Now I just want to play everything SquareEnix and those Team Echo games, eventually. Oh and I always had fun playing Star Wars Battlefront 2. Can't wait for the new one.
MGS2 is this INTPs fave game ever. The story and game interact and relate and paralell so cleverly with real life and it questions your sense of reality in a profound way. Like The Matrix.
My ability to explain depends on my mood. Some days I can't make a video for the life of me. That was one of the reasons I started making videos just to see if there were other INTPs similar to me. Thank you for your thanks lol
Tomacity(Rast) you know I want to make videos as well but I doubt I can be as much articulated as you, what makes you good at it do you think ? Do you like drink a glass of wine before ? I notice for me it help just one glass
I have been curious about this too. I love love love RPG's, any diabo-esc game that allows me to build a character is perfect. Titan Quest was one of my favorites. Being able to start all characters from the same point and branch them into completely different play styles using a skill tree and gear just consumes all my time. Haven't cared to much to think about why, as my free-time is spent playing. I have an addictive personality. I've known that from a young age. that's why I made a no-drug / no-alcohol policy for myself as a young teen. Raised religiously as well, so it gave me the structure to attain it.
Nonreligious but I don't roll with any sort of drugs. I already have unhealthy habits. Just willpower getting me through. As for games, I love the Uncharted series and The Last of Us. God of War was always fun. I got into Wizard101 when I was younger and was really good at it. It is surprisingly hard at certain points. I had no friends on there so it became impossible to pass a certain point. If Pokémon counts, I have an obsession with it. I know everything there is to know practically.
That's really awesome! That makes a lot of sense seeing how most video games are in English. Some video games do offer subtitles in different languages too.
There's an iPhone game called CubeOn I love. I have an Android though. It's a puzzle game with cubes and I beat the final level in about 5 minutes while I never figured out some of them.
INTP is here!. It's always good to see an INTP+ a gamer like you :). And About skyrim i have never put in more hours like this game. I have beat every guild quests + main quests in 140 hours -.-"
Hey there, I'm an INTP girl! My favorite games..... mm.. I'd say The Legend of Zelda OoT and TLOZ:TP, Sonic Colors, Sonic and SEGA All-Stars Racing, Mario Kart series and Smash Brothers. IDK, I just like those games with characters I already recognize, although I'm ready for the next step: Final Fantasy... Anyways, good video! Hope to see you around on the Internet!
I used the tranq but I think cqc works too. I thought the best part was when Raiden asked Snake if he was going to run out of ammo and Snake points to his bandana and replies "infinite ammo" haha. That was an item unlockable from the first game just in case you didn't know.
And i have read some research that says video games helps a lot with coping with stress and depression also it also helps in raising the child performance in intelligence test like WAIIS or IQ which will benefits the individual in academic performance...etc
Any Halo fans here? Storyline, and also the amazing experience of beating another person with superior tactics; guy shooting you, you're down to almost no health and shields, jump and throw grenade just behind the wall so he doesn't see it, blows up, gets his shields, quick shot to the head. man, the memories (especially halo 3 and Reach for me). (im INTP by the way, despite the fact that FPSs are usually "S" games, not N). I think my ISTP brother influenced my gaming choice; despite what other INTPs say, I've never been much of an RTS guy (at least not competitively). I like RPGs, but they tend to bore me rather quickly, they burn out fast (no true challenge; or too much luck involved if it IS challenging).
I really think that may be the reason I was so far ahead of my classmates in my early school years. My vocabulary was larger than average and I just breezed through school. I do think that may have hurt me later on during the later stages of education, because I never had to study when I was a child so when I actually took a subject that required memorizing something, I struggled because of never forming good study habits.
'Video Games is like real life' that part is what I was thinking about recently. In a kinda related and different viewpoint, I was thinking about cheating code one day. If we type in the cheating code, the game become so easy to a point that is so boring. Same as in real life context, if life become too easy suddenly, and it will get boring as well. Therefore, for me, an INTP, life can be pain in the ass a lot of time, but I start to enjoy it more and feel less anxious.
INTJ here and I enjoy video games for the exact same reasons. I love just absorbing lots and lots of knowledge that I can instantly see as applicable (to that system within the game). For example learning all of the skills or perks or items of a game allows you to understand how the game works and then can be used to be better at that game. Just my two cents.
And about the benefits of video games.. personally i don't think there is better media to learn a foreign language like video games where you can hear how some names of stuff or items pronounced or written..etc with more interactive ways than a lot of textbooks i studied in school. So by the time i went to college i was one of the few who can study science in english with ease while others are struggling to even read the text and understand it.
In video games you can experiment and do certain things that would be highly "unconventional" to find these "hacks" as you put it, or "shortcuts" as I would put it.. but as you said real life has consequences which sorta stop us from experimenting to the extreme.
I like games that have seemingly endless amount of content to master. I really like League of Legends because there was so much to learn and lots of room for improvement. In games with multiple characters, I prefer to master one character and strive to be the best at that character. My friends always tease me cause I only play one character but I like picking a character I like and learning everything there is to know about that character. I was wondering if any other intps play games like this?
to be honest, video games are a little infantile IMO. I think most people who are younger are into them, but then it's a good way of hand/eye co-ordination, as well as spatial and life skills as you say. Though IMO, video games can teach how to set and reach goals, and simply are fun. I mainly played them as a youngster, but it's fun basically to spend an evening with friends playing them. or go to friends' houses really early and spend the entire day playing them.
That's a bullshit statement. They're not infantile. But you are right, with the " Hand eye coordination". and "goals". reply back, for a debate please?
I am almost a textbook INTP. I think so much that I find it difficult NOT to think. I, as I think most INTPs do, like to think about the big picture and not sweat the small everyday stuff. Chit-chat drives me crazy and I have little tolerance for it. Recently, I wondered just what video games INTPs liked, because I am a HUGE gamer. For me, like many INTPs, I like analyzing the big picture and tweaking, that is why I am a big fan of the 4x games, strategy games where one the explores, expands, exploits, and exterminates. Four X games include: Civilization, Sins of a Solar Empire, Sim City, and Heroes of Might and Magic. I was quite surprised that you were into first person shooters. About the only first person games I like are Fallout and Skyrim. Interesting. You mentioned you are a "completionist". How do you get comfortable with being a completionist and not being able to complete an open ended game like Skyrim?
(INTP here) I personally play anything where I have a form of creativity along with strategy. Example skyrim, MOBAs, Overwatch, Live action RPG, and even mobile apps like Balloon towers defense. I definitely would say INTPs get a bit addicted to video games so monitor your usage if you want to keep your personal life in tact.
Man, video games dominated my life too much. Too much of a escapism for me. When i discovered the 386 of a neighbor of my parents i was hooked and ditched a lot of my social life just for the "gaimz". In the end a lot of games i didn't complete, because i could already predict where it was going when i would systematize my efforts this and this way. Well then came the multiplayer era, and then i ditched it because i didn't want to spend so much time on minuscule specialized training to become the best. Hmmm, does that sound logical or is it just escapism from an escapism...
Ignoring the mindless carnage in Chivalry: Medieval Warfare, nothing is more satisfying than winning a round of free for all using a special technique that took about 40 hours to master.
Life is the ultimate sandbox role playing game. The rules are uncertain. the objectives are self driven. Play can be cooperative or competitive. There's even an online mode.
I learned how to set up a system to organize my thoughts and physical belongings from fallout 3 weapons and ammo hording. An afterthought skill can transition to real life if the need arises. The transition hasn't been error-free, but I make do. Your ideas coincide with those of the Nerd Fitness website I've been frequenting in regards to leveling up :D
I'm not gonna lie. Everytime the boredom catched up I wanted to cheat. I'm not sure if this was like that a couple of years ago but after suffering through a depression I find myself giving up on games and just generally in life often and keep on with mods/hacks.
Dwarf Fortress. It's like INTP hell... but so fun... Also, I own a couple dozen PnP rulebooks for WoD, D20 Pathfinder, ADnD, Heavy Gear, Battletech, etc. I've read most of them. I've never played any of them.
Lol the game is derived from real life, yet we learn life from games. I guess we're just excited that the game managed to sum up certain aspects of life so well and provide a lab environment for us to try things out that we otherwise won't have the opportunity to.
i, personally, have never been super into most video games. However, in my smaller years, I was in love with Dragon Quest. I bought every DQ game I could get my hands on. Now, I don't play a lot of games, except for Skyrim. Now, I might get into Dark Souls, but once I find out how the game works, if it doesn;t offer anything new, I may find it immediately boring. This is something which keeps me from most "viedo game circles", as I have never really stuck to anything long enough to get to know it inside and out. Aye wells.
I think I have sunk more hours into skyrim and dark souls than any other game haha. The most important thing I realized was that if I could dedicate 70 hours to learning and beating a video game then I could dedicate that much time to learning a new skill or learning some kind of valuable life lesson. I guess I learned the power of allotting time.
INTP here and I really like video games, for me they all pretty much went downhill after PS2 and Xbox generation, once 360 and PS3 era arrived turn-based RPGs had pretty much died and also the constant barrage of messages (people getting online in your friend's list, achievements unlocked ect.) destroyed the atmosphere of gaming imho. For me games like Ico and Shadow of the Colossus were the height of game immersion, reducing all of the meters and superfluous moves that distracted you from the gameplay and experience of it all. I actually got into running a minecraft server on xbox 360 for a while but I got very tired of the drama that went on between the players.
One of my favourite things to do in MMOs is figure out the most efficient way to make money, like in EVE I'd have spreadsheets of manufacturing yields and profits and trading routes. I like learning everything about how a games systems work and then trying to game it and see how much I can get for minimum effort. I still haven't found a way to transfer these skills in to real life unfortunately.. Real life has too many unpredictable variables :(
I would do this, but at some point I had an epiphany that I was killing part of the experience by doing the typical INTP thing by over analysis, so I just run with it now. It's kinda uncomfortable but also more rewarding, I have to think on my feet.
MOBAs are really fun, I think, for INTPs. They're very systematic and hectic-ish and it can be bitch to figure out. It's very much worth it in the end though.
Major issue in which kickstarter is helping us by doing a solid is..independent game development. I started gaming in king quest 1 and binged sierra from there, then all things baldurs gate, divinity series (Divinity:original Sin is the sh*t, it lets you do anything with their set of rules, i love it to bits),1st dragon age, morrowind, dreamfall TLJ,planescape torrment,nox,.. also strategy/building games (transport tycoon, red alert 2, commandos, age of empires,..) and puzzle solving games (hidden object games are not puzzles popcap!) ,mysteries,..basically anything that lets me use my mind.. Or button smashers ^^ like fight games or silly race games (for playing in co-op) But A) I'm a pc gamer and most of the games i play are just not well suited to play on consoles. Why would I, I have 102 buttons on my keyboard..why would I want to use however many a controller has o.O.And the games that could/should be are just LOUSY portsfrom console to pc and/or mainstreamed until the point where they alienate their initial core target group - publishers,I'm looking at you - Dragon age inquisition anyone?marketed as going back to their roots with an interface not even slightly appropriate for pc and a "special new strategic mode for the non-action oriented type of player" with LESS options than DAII (which was again worse than DAO). Sure I get that you want to make money, but please don't insult my intelligence by slapping RPG on everything that has a skill tree and expect me to pay for it. (sorry, I derailed, it happens ^^) B) A lot of games are stupid.I don't mean not fun (although, some of them are very cringeworthy), but just..dumbed down. From the controls used to the language and the stories or logic/physics systems. Because of crowdfunding a lot of really good AA games are coming out after what feels a drought of intelligent gaming. One of these games is Div:OS which I already mentioned.Apart from Larian Studios en Swen Vincke being awesome one of the reasons their games are so great is that they don't insult your intelligence.Their previous games were all rushed by publishers which is why they had to make some calls they are still not happy about.D:OS is the first full TB RPG (co-op possible) they ever released, and you are basically only limited in if you come up and try something or not.The rules are made to be broken, if something is there you can interact with it, ice freezes water (and blood hihi) ,fire melts it, puddle + lightning = stun, poison cloud + fire = boom.Crafting system is also just put shit together, branch + knife = stick, you find a cooking pot use it as a helmet or cook in it, do whatever.Actions have consequences, there is a way to finish the games even if you kill everyone (which you can ^^).One thing they refused to do was add in quest markers. You have a journal, where you can go read about quests. But other than that, you're on your own.Go where you want, but careful, this way is instadeath without warning xD - the bitching and moaning of people - how do i know where to go, which quests to take if no question mark appears, this game is hard, i don't like the classless system, there is too much choice (for big fat P's as we tend to be classless is the bomb, if you want a rogue/witch combo, go ahead :) , I die too much,.. -> these are the people most games are made for,it's horrendous if you like video games but do not belong to that group because you end up playing 15yr old crappy looking games xD that are still so much better than what came out from 2003-2013 www.lar.net (head of larian studios has a fantastic blog with insights in publishing, developing, the business side of games)
? I thought I knew all the easter eggs and stuff. I've finished 3 and 4 and even though I've only played a demo of MGS1 I actually consider myself more familiar with it than 3 and 4 cos I've gatheted so much about it from several sources. MGS2 made me really emotional by the way. And the others to some extent.
You said you "play until you have everything in a game". Do you go for achievements that are not related to how good you are at playing a game, but rather are about having done every single task no matter how unimportant? I usually only try achievements that present a challenge to me.
I like the video games that make you lost in the story and have little puzzles in it like the legend of Zelda ( my favorite video game series ) The only video game I remember that made me cry was Minecraft story mode when my favorite character magnus died. 😅 P.s I'm 12 and also I like rpg games and i like the old call of duty games for campaign
In my opinion, that's exactly why INTP are usually suck at real life. Video games are all the doing in head which it is THE Field for INTP. In mundane life is different, you have to physically deal with it. I think if the world ended up at a The Matrix-ish world, INTP will do the world real good...
I thought X was pretty linear which I didn't care for. The story was really good though. I think the series really took a turn for the worse when X-2 came out. That game was shite. And if you notice X-2 was the first game to be released under SquareEnix. X and every game before that was SquareSoft. Dragon Warrior and Tetris haha? You are old school dude! I use to watch my brother play DW. I was like 4 and I tried to play it but failed miserably. That's cool! Not many people play the old titles.
-Legend of Zelda
-Dark Souls
-Elder Scrolls
-Dragon Age
These are my drugs of choice.
IncognitoGuido Hell yes!
Id take weed
I am still playing Dragon Age Origins from time to time, haha.
Dragon Age 👍🏻
Fallout is definitely up there for INTPs.
This is so true 😭😭
This was super interesting!

Halo 1 will always be my favorite game in whe whole world for the rest of my life. The story line is unbeatable.
The Legacy of Kain series hold a special place in my heart, pretty much the best story in any video game, in my opinion.

Darksouls is like a way of life lol. I loved the lore in that game. I think trying to figure out the story was half the fun.
Or button smashers ^^ like fight games or silly race games (for playing in co-op)
But A) I'm a pc gamer and most of the games i play are just not well suited to play on consoles. Why would I, I have 102 buttons on my keyboard..why would I want to use however many a controller has o.O.And the games that could/should be are just LOUSY portsfrom console to pc and/or mainstreamed until the point where they alienate their initial core target group - publishers,I'm looking at you -
Dragon age inquisition anyone?marketed as going back to their roots with an interface not even slightly appropriate for pc and a "special new strategic mode for the non-action oriented type of player" with LESS options than DAII (which was again worse than DAO). Sure I get that you want to make money, but please don't insult my intelligence by slapping RPG on everything that has a skill tree and expect me to pay for it.
(sorry, I derailed, it happens ^^)
B) A lot of games are stupid.I don't mean not fun (although, some of them are very cringeworthy), but just..dumbed down. But other than that, you're on your own.Go where you want, but careful, this way is instadeath without warning xD
- the bitching and moaning of people - how do i know where to go, which quests to take if no question mark appears, this game is hard, i don't like the classless system, there is too much choice (for big fat P's as we tend to be classless is the bomb, if you want a rogue/witch combo, go ahead :) , I die too much,..
-> these are the people most games are made for,it's horrendous if you like video games but do not belong to that group because you end up playing 15yr old crappy looking games xD that are still so much better than what came out from 2003-2013

Games like EverQuest2 really helped me cope with my life.
Are there any series you were fond of?
Witty one liners are my specialty haha
Ahhh no.. My friend got it but I have yet to pick it up. I have played and beat the first one though.
You said you "play until you have everything in a game".
Do you go for achievements that are not related to how good you are at playing a game, but rather are about having done every single task no matter how unimportant?
I usually only try achievements that present a challenge to me.
Challenge for me too
I like the video games that make you lost in the story and have little puzzles in it like the legend of Zelda ( my favorite video game series ) The only video game I remember that made me cry was Minecraft story mode when my favorite character magnus died. 😅
P.s I'm 12 and also I like rpg games and i like the old call of duty games for campaign
As Intp I really love terraria and minecraft
I got every dog tag in that game. Did you have to tranquilise him to get his tag? No need to answer - I'm trying to jog my memory out loud I guess.
thanks :)
Already beat it.
i like video games cos it trains my mind XD
In my opinion, that's exactly why INTP are usually suck at real life. Video games are all the doing in head which it is THE Field for INTP. In mundane life is different, you have to physically deal with it.
I think if the world ended up at a The Matrix-ish world, INTP will do the world real good...
i love MGS!!!!! my only videos are of MGO!
MGO was my SHIT! Solidocelot was my gamer tag.
witcher 3 is the bomb
I love it
I'm an INTP, but I hate video games. I'm pretty good at them when I play them, though.
Play Deus Ex: human revolution
I thought X was pretty linear which I didn't care for. The story was really good though. I think the series really took a turn for the worse when X-2 came out. That game was shite. And if you notice X-2 was the first game to be released under SquareEnix. X and every game before that was SquareSoft. Dragon Warrior and Tetris haha? You are old school dude! I use to watch my brother play DW. I was like 4 and I tried to play it but failed miserably. That's cool! Not many people play the old titles.
You have got to play Mass Effect for real.
Command and Conquer.
I cried when I killed Alice
Dota +_+ Will i ever be rid of you :(
You and I would be best friends if we met in real life.
