CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Prince Andrei (Mel Ferrer) expresses his interest in Natasha (Audrey Hepburn) at a formal dance.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
War and Peace is a commendable attempt to boil down Tolstoy's long, difficult novel into 208 minutes' screen time. In recreating the the social and personal upheavals attending Napoleon's 1812 invasion of Russia, $6 million was shelled out by coproducers Carlo Ponti, Dino de Laurentiis and Paramount Pictures. Some of the panoramic battle sequences are so expertly handled by second-unit director Mario Soldati that they appear to be Technicolor-and-Vistavision newsreel footage of the actual events. Still, the film falters dramatically, principally because of a lumpy script and King Vidor's surprisingly lustreless direction. In addition, the casting is wildly consistent: for example, while Audrey Hepburn is flawless as Natasha, Henry Fonda is far too "Yankeefied" as the introspective Pierre. Proving too long and unwieldy for most audiences, War and Peace died at the box office; far more successful was the epic, scrupulously faithful 1968 version, filmed in the Soviet Union.

"What a joy it is to dance with her, like holding springtime in your arms."
Real life husband and wife.
@@lurking0death One of my dreams is to go to dinner with Audrey and dance with her. Unfortunately it’s a dream that is impossible to fulfill.
*Movie about Russian Aristocracy: Give everyone British Accents
@Roger London Russia DID make it...
@Roger London I mean there's a Russian version from 1966, which is vastly superior to this.
Didn't think the soviets would stay true to the source material when making the 1966 movie.
Except Pierre...his voice always feels so harsh compared to everyone else here
*Shot in Italy
Audrey you are so beautiful and the best lady ever
Supposedly, Marlon Brando rejected the role of Pierre in this film because "he didn't want to work with Audrey Hepburn". Proving, not surprisingly, that his stupidity began long before Oscar night 1973 and Sacheen Littlefeather. (Good luck for Audrey, though). If you're going to have a character in a play or film say of a woman that "holding her is like holding springtime in your arms", she damned well better live up to that billing. I dare ANYONE to deny that Audrey does exactly that, when she flashes that dazzling smile at Andrei. God used His finest materials, and put in overtime, the day He created her.
agree - Hepburn was an angel on earth but the books about her reveal a more exciting and interesting dimension to her life as well. Way ahead of her time. While I agree that Brando was mistaken not to act with her, I do feel he was ahead of his time in supporting the American Indians a generation before it became cool to support them. But it may be because he was thinking with his head and perhaps not his personal ideologies.
this guy is way too cheery and carefree to be Prince Andrei
He reminds me of Ashley Wilkes in GwtW.
Tolstoy wanted to show that she revived his joy in life. The actor and director are true to the author's intention.
Mel Ferrer looks attractive here, it"s because Audrey?. Is this love sight?
Today Commemorates Mel Ferrer's 100th Birthday
In my opinion the best scene from this film!!
Sadly not magnificient like the 1965 Russian version...
I really like how she look after the colonel her remorse made her a gem of personality audrey Hepburn is so elegant and classy lovely and endless adjectives 😘😘😘😘love her and ADMIRE her a classy lady
Forever greatful for your work audrey hepburn ❤️♒
Wow... starring: Audrey Hepburn, Mel Ferrer.....
I'm a 34 year old in 2021 who's breath is aways taken away when I lay my eyes on him. I first laid eyes on him in "Lili" I'm so glad he lived a long life but my God. Even if he was standing in front of me at any age I'd still be head over heels.
really? I don’t see the appeal lol 😂 it’s true that everyone has someone out there attracted to them.
Totally agree. He's a dream. In the movie, the death scene is so sad it kills me every time. Been watching this movie since I was a little child, every year around Christmas. It's not on TV so much anymore but used to be a lot because it's nice and long...in pj's on the couch with rests of the Christmas dinner and snowing outside. Perfection.
@@Yikkoofficialhmmmm yes, I guess I could imagine that well-groomed famous actors might have that one admirer out there..
Just movie clips aren't sufficient to completely appreciate the novel of Leo Tolstoy, having read the book, & being a admirer of him. Also read this other novel - dramas like the two parts of Anna Karinnina , I movies based on these books I too enjoyed.
Duh
2021 and wow haven't we come so far, do they actually still dance like that and throw balls?
Audrey est MAGNIFIQUE
this looks gorgeous, i shall go buy it, thank you :)
Mel and Audrey were married in real life.
Flurting with a such oppennness at a ball at that time by nobility ?! I tnink the movie makers have forgotten the novel story happened long long time ago :))
No, that's when they DID flirt! and more usually followed. They didn't spend their lives posing for portraits.
I would’ve loved for them to just get Married and be end game bc they were so cute together
The actor who plays Andrey definitely doesn’t fit the role, but this scene is beautiful to watch nonetheless.
She always wanted to be a ballet dancer
I can’t wait to read this novel by the great Leo Tolstoy. Audrey was the main reason why I’d wanna read the novel.
That and also because I love the song The Gates Of Delirium by Yes which was inspired by War And Peace. Ever listened to the song... it’s a progressive rock song.
Bet you haven't finished reading the novel yet!!!
@@johnjohnson4628 I read it at 18, after I saw the film and have loved it all my life. Fabulous book, it's got everything.
who does he remind me of, Mel Ferrer? Someone modern.
Hollywood bueno hay que darles crédito ...🤣🤭🫢👍🏻😶🙃🤐
Que bella escenaaaaa !!!
Who is the wounded and who is acido furico? Getting Gettysburg is a bad ghost
They were married in real life.
and divorced
Oh my.... No trace of Russia in anything whatsoever)) These are British people and nothing else)
Herbert Lom who played Napoleon was a Czech, Henry Fonda, a Yank, Anita Ekberg was Swedish and Oscar Homolka was Austrian, not to mention the hundreds of Italians in minor or extra roles! "..and nothing else " ?? And Edda Hepburn van Heemstra (Audrey) was born in Brussels. Only a few British people appear in the movie.
@@johnjohnson4628 It’s not about who the actors are ethnically. They may well be Russians even. It’s about the spirit of the movie that is British in and out.
@@Soundofmusic777 Of course.
and? didn't you shot your own Aristocracies and Royalties... you have no say whatsoever The British actually kept their nobility and royalty
Your comment is pointless: what does it have to do with the quality of this movie?...) Would you be happy if a Russian movie about Britain would have nothing British about it? Actually, Russians are able to make state-of-the-art movies about the West, whereas Westerners, whenever they try to portray Russians, are just portraying themselves in Russian attire. They are unable to grasp the Russian mind.
Anybody knows the name of that musical piece?
Aram Khachaturian - Masquerade Suite - Waltz

Prelepa scena, Odri i Mel fenomenalna.
Hmmmm. Not too sure Tolsky wrote that dialog.
Ha ha. He didn’t. Tolstoy!😂😂
Audrey was too good for that Mel lol
The costumes at this time were so bad 😅 Her dress is not historically accurate and his looks all cheap. Cinema has come a long way. I prefer the newer one when it comes to costume design.
This is worse than that Version of Fiddler on the Roof I saw in Salt Lake City.
He should have said, no you a whole, can't you see I'm crazy about her.. go away
Me encanta la película.
From the thumbnail I thought this was Cinderella 😄
You want a good ghost!?
Y llega a ser su esposa?
I thought she play the role as Princess Maria
I prefer the Russian version to this.
Me gusto mucho esta película 😊
Como se llama la película?
The guy is Mel Ferrer
Yes, he was Audrey's first husband.

lousy sound...
Sorry to say, all three main actors are terribly miscast. An acceptable Pierre is found in the Russian production of 1968, the by far the most fitting Natasha is in the 2007 film.
Knox Overstreet I have to agree that Pierre and Andre were miscast. Henry Fonda was just too old for the role. But, I actually think that Audrey Hepburn was perfect for the role: she encompassed the naivety, innocence, fun and beauty of Natasha, that I feel can't be matched.
Hennryyy I am not convinced, Audrey is not a sportive type and far too close to the screwball tradition. Compare some impressions of www.fanpop.com/clubs/clemence-poesy/images/20773548/title/clemence-natasha-rostova-war-peace-photo
45+ year old Director Bondarchuk as Pierre. You must be kidding. That production with miscast Andrey and Natasha's-ballet-dancer-who-can't-play was the moment Russians were offended by Oscar award.
+Knox Overstreet :-)
+Knox Overstreet Ludmila Savelyeva was my favorite Natasha...
Who likes Mel Ferrer ? 🤮
But Audrey
What’s wrong with Mel ferrer? He was actually a very good looking man
The only real Russian here is Audrey...others are Americans
She’s from Belgium
That guy is creepy
Hahahaha
