Minecraft sounds are literally the most satisfying noises. I could just listen to any block. Most games just have shooting or loud. Minecraft is relaxing.
The fact phantoms are warped sounds of baby crying makes sense because it's such an alarming and obnoxious sound that forces you to do something about it. I can't believe I haven't connected the dots about the Creeper spectrogram image. It really sounds like typical spectrogram sonification.

Minecraft has some serious top-class sound design. All the little micro interactions with placeables (like the item frame) or the mob sounds, it is all just so perfect and original.

I remember encountering deepslate for the first time and appreciating how the sound design made it feel like something cold and dank, like it hadn't been touched for eons

As Samuel talks about at 5:08 with the simplicity of the sound engine, it's shocking how much a difference it makes when you use a mod like Sound Physics Remastered that adds complex attenuation and sound reflections. Honestly, I feel like the toggling of that mod has more of an effect on the feel of the game than even shaders.
I wish Minecraft got an engine overhaul, I'd love to have wind and reverb and nature sounds, and actually incorporate the sounds themselves physically in the world
It's actually just adding some reverb and applying some filters to the sound effects. It's not actually simulating the individual echos. It does use ray-casting from sound sources, but the ray-cast data is just used to adjust the parameters of the reverb effects and filters.
4:00 oh jeez, everything makes so much sense now 😂 my friend and I are in creative right now on his ps4, and we don't sleep so we each have like 50 phantoms flying around us at all times. Yesterday we were playing and I thought I kept hearing a baby crying. I figured it was another apartment or someone outside. Now I realize I was hearing the phantoms, when I got too far from them I could actually hear the baby sounds 😂

I never even thought about how much sound design impacts Minecraft's atmosphere, aside from the soothing and nostalgic-like music. And it is really awesome, I must say.

Yessss I love Minecraft's sound design, it really does all of its vibes really well! From the comforting sounds of walking around, farming and building, to the unsettling noises of being down in the caves and hearing an echo of something in what you know should be an abandoned mineshaft. The mob sounds are my favourites, especially the original sounds, they're so unique and recognisable, and very fitting!
I would watch literally 1000 more videos about minecraft’s sound design and sounds and probably would never get tired of them. They perfectly exercise the idea of “less is more”. Minecraft sound design includes some of the most satisfying sounds I’ve ever heard. And that’s isn’t only nostalgia talking: amethyst geodes(!!!!!!) piglins! And of course classic explosion or glass breaking sounds, all the mob sounds old and new, nether portal… and all the creepy cave sounds and mob sounds being scarier paired with the dark. I could go on. It’s fantastic.
Foley artists are my favorite folks. They've got to be some of the most creative folks out there (especially for video games). The fact they can do so much with just a few simple everyday objects found around the house is... nothing short of magical to be honest.
You sound designers are awesome. I think Minecraft's audio is the best design feature the game has, and it's done incredibly well. I'm so glad you get to brainstorm with the other teams for new features. Keep up the great work
I love that they use real animal sounds too! They sound so cute. I have seen videos about movie sounds and they usually try to make every sound themselves, which is unnecessarily complicated. I remember one clip where they tried to make "dog walking on the floor" sound... and they glued something hard in glove fingertips and made the sound with them.
This is actually what I'd love to do for many years, kind of a dream job to me. Very intuitive and sometimes I'd love unnoticeable jobs that are _actually important, especially in gaming_
The coolest thing about this video is the inspirational impact it’s gonna have on some of the kids watching it. I just have a feeling that this will be the creative spark that leads to their future careers in audio design/editing and it all started here. Super cool 👏
A few years ago I watched one of their earlier videos on sound design, and it inspired me to actually study in that general direction. I recently did my first sounds for a friends game. These guys were the inspiration for that basically. :)
