Just got my Bolton calipers for my Himiway cruiser. 15 minutes. Awesome upgrade, I Didn’t really need more stopping power, But the Silence is beautiful, No noise, Very Smooth. Breaking with original Himiway calipers was pretty rough. And this video is great for installing them. 100% happy with these.
Dude you finally explained why the brakes on my Rad Power Bike requires so much adjustment. I try to be a lot gentler when I’m braking these days just to require less adjustments. It truly does feel like the biggest crux in the system, requiring the most babysitting. Going to truly look into the solutions you’ve provided here and really appreciate all of your great quality videos. Seems like your production quality is getting better and better all of the time!
I think it's one of the easiest places to hide cheap components in electric bikes. I have a sondors that's no different. Single side mechanical brake that makes clinchers look Gucci.
OK, I installed the BOLTON Hydraulic Brakes on my Himiway. Easy install, with only a few things that I found, was confusing. For the front spacer adapter, I tried the ones you sent and then used the spacers that came with the bike. I now find that the different spacers are for different size rotors!. I used the bolts & spacers that came with my bike. What a difference the hydraulic brakes make! I would say for my weight it now stops 30% better. Your instructions were perfect! Thanks again Kyle.
I got My order from You a few days ago. Just installed them easily on My Himiway and did a 10 mile test ride - - -- I like them !! Smooth full braking power.
Good timing for this video, I just received your calipers the day before you released this video. Today I installed them and they work great. I also got the controller and screen upgrade for my 2019 radrover. I love the screen, a little different from the videos, seems a little upgraded. I installed the 750w bafang motor on it too and got your custom socket for rear freewheel gears. That socket made easy work out of the motor swap. Keep up the good videos and good luck with Bolton Bikes.
Thank You. Ebikes in my price range all have mechanical disc. Not an option as I live in the foothills of the Cascade range. This definitely broadens the possibilities. Will look into the adjustable stem as well.
I replaced the front Star Union 2-piston hydraulic brake on my Juice Ripcurrent S with a Magura MT5e 4-piston hydraulic brake system with a QM40 caliper mount and a Magura MDR-C 180mm rotor . This system is amazing and was relatively simple to install. I ordered the MT5e with a Normally Open motor shut off switch. Magura calls this a "HIGO Closer (NO)". They also offer a Normally Closed switch for ebikes that require it called a "HIGO Opener (NC)". "HIGO" is simply the connector most commonly used. Oddly, the Ripcurrent uses a weird screw-on HIGO connector to insure a good, safe watertight connection, so I had to repurpose the one side of the connector off the Star Union brake lever by snipping it off and soldering it onto my new Magura brake lever. This brake system works awesome.
Thanks for this, just put in my order. I've had my Himiway cruiser for a month now, loving the bike but just shy of 300 miles really noticing the brakes don't seem to be up to par with the weight and power of the bike. I stopped in at a new ebike shop in my neighbourhood to ask about upgrade options and while they had a full set of hydraulic brakes in stock the owner was really good about explaining the challenges (cable length, potentially having to splice the electric connectors if they don't match and re-routing the cable on the frame). I just watched a couple other videos from people who went this (calipers) route, I'm not expecting a dramatic difference in performance, but feels like a worthwhile tweak.
First bike I got here in Canada was an English bike, with the same setup as you describe; my friends all had the left/front right/rear combination on theirs, which made it sometimes hilarious when they took my bike and tried to brake locking the rear wheel while unaware of the difference!
the zooming in and out was bugging my eyes out .... lol.... one of the first and best up grades I bought from you thanks to your great advice... all the power, torque, and speed mean little if you can't control or stop it....

Great upgrade. Like the logo on the side. I’ll be picking up two sets. One for my bike and the other fro my wife’s. Like the ideas of extra stopping power on our Cargo Bikes.
I have just install the hybrid brakes on my e-bike.They are very good.A hint for people dont do repairs as often as i do.Use the calibers with their own base( i dont know how you call it) ,its more easy to make the adjustments. It works for me fine.

Awesome vid. You're pigeon holing the brakes though because they'd work on non electric bikes too. I'd suggest a more slow and steady brake break in period. Slamming on your brakes like that is counter to all suggested break in methods & may warp your rotors.
Another major brake upgrade is to ditch that squishy helical wound cable housing for some zero compression (compressionless) housing. The zero compression housing has linear wires in it, like an index shifter cable housing, and it can make a huge difference in translating finger pull into stopping power.
Very cool 😎 I’ve seen videos where they unscrew the part (Barrel adjuster?) and use it in place of the barrel adjuster in the Bolton Hydraulic brakes. This means no cable cutting and less tools 🛠
Im on the Gulf coast right now and have run into many ebike owners. Have talked to quite a few. All have mention that they would like to upgrade there brakes especially the guys riding the Himiways. This will be a great upgrade for them

Kyle, appreciate the video, there are also some nice dual piston mechanical options but your branded one looks great. I did find the cuts in the video very hard to watch.
My ride1up lmtd has Tektro auriga hydraulics. I just ordered the tektro ceramic/organic pads and a bleed kit with more tektro fluid. However, they’re 180mm and I’d like to go to 203 or 220. The one thing I can’t figure out are what types of rotors are best. It seems as if full floating should be best, but at the “ebike specific” rotors seem to be centerline.

We ordered some Juintech hydraulic calipers from you and they wouldn't fit the rear wheel of our bike (Biktrix Stunner). Is this a different model, that's a different size and could potentially fit?
The Biktrix Stunners prior to 2019 came stock with with mechanical disc brakes. We have 2018 Stunners. I bought some Shimano hydro brakes from you for my bike a while back but now we want to upgrade my partner's bike. The Juintech looked like a good option because the install would be easier and my partner is less concerned about the hand force improvement of full hyrdo brakes (I have hand issues that are aggravated by hard squeezing). Unfortunately, the Juintech brakes didn't fit the rear of her bike and we had to return them. So just trying to figure out whether the Bolton branded brakes in this video are a different form factor than the Juintech or just Bolton branded Juintech. We'd just order the Shimano hyrdos from you, cuz we know those work, but you're out of the ones with yellow higo connectors. So looking for other possible options.
@@jakelondon I would recommend emailing with details on why the juintech brakes didn't fit. I haven't had a case yet where I've seen the brakes not work.
@@Area13ebikes The mechanic at our LBS said there wasn't room to fit them on the frame by the back wheel of the Stunner. These are the same folks that installed my Shimano hydro brakes successfully. Roshan, the owner of Biktrix, confirmed that this had been their experience as well. He indicated the Juintech calipers are a bit bigger than the other ones and the frame geometry of the bike is a bit of an outlier or something. I know they've worked well for many people, and are particularly popular for Rad Power Bikes. That's one of the reasons why we opted to order them. Seems like they have worked well for many people. It's unfortunate they didn't work out for us, but that's the deal. My Shimano brakes have been great, though, but they were significantly more expensive to get installed than I suspect the juintech style would be.
i have a rad runner 1....for almost three years now....i know how the brake system works and how to adjust....but it is doing something now i cannot figure out...when i apply the front brake it makes a popping sound and then no brake , some times it does the same in the back brake....i would like to talk to a human person on the phone about this....can any one give me a phone number to talk to a knowledgeable person about this brake system popping sound???..............HELP!!!!!HELP
