che dolcezza, che bellezza poetica, forza interpretativa infinita dopo 36 anni di carriera ! anche se la bellezza divina della sua voce non la segue più è semplicemente unica. divina.
J B Steane said of these records that she made at Villa Pace "it was as if a veil had been lifted". The voice was surely one of the most beautiful of the 20th century
Any little infelicities in ascending to higher notes is more than compensated for by the gorgeousness of her voice and the sensitivity of her phrasing. So many of these 1954 "Villa Pace" recordings of Ponselle are little masterpieces.
I thought I had heard THE definitive performance of this heartbreaking song when I heard Carlo Bergonzi sing it, but Rosa gives him a run for his money. Spectacular.
Once in creation is there a voice and technique this good. There are no words. Do not ever listen to her sing "Danny Boy" or you will be too stunned, too moved to even go about your day.
Those close to her said the core of her voice was there until death. There is a recording on YT of her singing verse two of "Drink to me Only . . ." on her 80th birthday. Remarkable!
The pianist for all but a small number of the selections recorded for the 1954 RCA LPs was Igor Chichagov, who had worked closely with her as a conductor and rehearsal accompanist during her stewardship of the Baltimore Civic Opera Company. On at least two songs included in the 1954 LPs, “Dicitincello vuie” and “Fa la nana bambin,” Ponselle accompanied herself.
Umm no all those who earned a “La” from their audiences deserve it: La Pasta, La Malibran, La Patti, La Divina, La Stupenda, La Superba. Etc. They aren’t given out willy-nilly to begin with. What’s that 6 in the last 200 years?
As Ponselle’s biographer I can attest that she held Claudia Muzio in the highest regard, and said that in certain roles neither she (RP) nor any other soprano could equal Muzio. Giacomo Lauri-Volpi described Ponselle’s voice as a “shaft of granite” and said that her Giulia in “La Vestale” was vocal and dramatic art in its highest form. Of Claudia Muzio he wrote that hers was “a voice of tears and sighs and restrained interior fire,” which is what her final series of recordings captured for all time.
The most beautiful sound ever recorded.
Claudia Muzio and Rosa completely ownes this lovely song, can`t separate the two, equally good.
Great art!

Some of the best singing I have heard from Ponselle from this period. Wonderful

Literally, artistry "to die for . . ."
Time stands still. The stars fall silently into the ocean. Simply breathtaking beauty.

Incomparable
Me pega directamente en mi "llorómetro".... No puedo detenerlo!
She probably sang beautifully on the morning she died, THE voice to be reckoned with by all singers, punto!
Those close to her said the core of her voice was there until death. There is a recording on YT of her singing verse two of "Drink to me Only . . ." on her 80th birthday. Remarkable!
marvelous duet....- wonderful accompaniest
; pianist is a maestro in their own right! ......

La Divina!!
MERAVIGLIOSA
She hits directly my "cryometer" ....I cannot stop It!!
Espectacular. A la altura de la Callas.
Lacrime, palpiti,e emozioni fortissime in una delle più carismatiche e splendide voci del secolo scorso.
Simplemente todo muy hermoso.
gracias por postearlo, no puedo dejar de escucharlo!
Прекрасно. Благодарю.
Splendida interpetrazione ,piena di patos, uguale a quella del grande Schipa
Прекрасно!!!
superba, splendida, piena di annima e di calor.Questa e Rosa Ponzilio (Ponselle).
beautiful
Claudia has it..the warmth and total feeling of the subject matter, it was composed for her voice.
Alas her voice shows her great past, her Aida with Martinelli is perfection......but Claudio is the winner here.
Only two sopranos deserve the word " La " in front of there name. La Divina Callas , and La Ponselle,
Add La Muzio
Richard Guglielmi Nope. Only the one singing here.
La Patti! La Muzio!
La Verrett.

With respect Muzio is just so much better despite earlier recording, her melodic sound and conviction she's
just perfect...please compare.
I used to prefer Muzio's recording until I heard this one.
