Lesotho & Wartrail

Another road deeper into our beautiful country, with twists and turns we eventually arrived at the South-Western border between South Africa and Lesotho. Some of the most unspoilt nature and pristine mountain ranges dominate this region along the Southern Drakensberg.
Life is rural here, untouched and immersed in a raw beauty unlike any other part of SA, a recommended stop on the travel list for those looking to experience a difference in their adventure travels.
With an average of 1500m above sea level, reaching a peak of 2161m at its highest point, the folds of the mountains tower over each other in a colossal battle of height domination. Our journey took us into the heart of Wartrail, an area deeply rich in open spaces and remarkable history. Open lands as far as the eye can see, natural water sources and kind hearted souls.
Time has no meaning here, civilization is a distant echo on the mountain side as the age of the surrounding beauty reminds the onlooker that Earth has been around long before us and shall be long after our brief experience of this life.
I shared in a brief encounter with a Basotho shepard, our conversation stradling four languages in order for us to communicate, a mix of Xhosa, Sotho, Afrikaans and English allowed us to engage and discover more about each other.
The shepard was attending his flock, and I was happily shooting away. We discussed matters of images on the camera (with absolute shock and awe), what Port Elizabeth is, his very basic understanding of Afrikaans and where we had come from.
An encounter which I will always remember, a moment that reminded me that the old world is not lost to modernity, life that exists beyond the societal veil is very strong and that we are just brief flickers of light in the greater scheme of things.
