I wish bicycle culture in the US was the same as UK. I have several LBS, 3 are owned by same company, and I get the "I don't care" vibe from all of them. I started doing my own maintenance. I would never imagine anyone from any of my local shops to completely tear down, SONIC WASH my parts, wash my bike, and clean everything the way you did. Your customers are lucky to have you.

It is amazing what a good service can do to any bike! My Contend has just passed the 40,000km mark, so it's seen a fair few of these services. Over the years I've learned how to do it all myself, and the satisfaction of riding away with a clean, sharp bike is incredible! It may be a cheap/entry level bike, but it's very, very capable!

I drive a Tomasso Sentiero. It has a Claris groupset and I upgraded the wheelset to a Mavic wheel with Sram hubs and threw on a set of Schwalbe Marathon tires. I ride through a mix of street and gravel trail. It gets real dusty from the gravel trails so after every ride I make sure to give it a wash and lube the chain.

I know it's wet where you live, but have you considered ever advising your customers away from using wet lubes (even the ones marked "Dry" are wet lubes) if small particles of sand are a common issue? Have a look at the body of work done by Zero Friction Cycling (the only independent tester of chains) which shows when it comes to cost and efficiency that even in wet conditions (unless they're super long and wet conditions) waxing your chain or wax drip lubes are always the better option (especially when there is dirt involved).

I ride in Australia, it’s hot and very dusty, my bike clean involves a air line and a quick dust over with a soft cloth, the only thing that needs a good cleaning is the chain occasionally 👍great site and I love watching your posts

Again, youve restored this bike to almost as new. Integrity there by not charging for a new chain.
Amazed the rider continued to ride with a broken spoke with resulting wheel so out of true the rear tyre was dangerously worn. Torque all bolts , spot on again. Made my Wednesday evening again. No stone unturned here. Exellent

Another job well done! 👏 The sand was really all over the bike. Good to get that off before it causes a lot of damage. I live in Oslo, Norway. So our local challenge is that in winter the roads and pavements and even the bike paths are doused in salt. That stuff is corroding your components so fast you can watch it happen. Which is why I wash my bike almost after every ride. At least once a week. A couple of years back I actually destroyed my commuter bike by not taking care of it in the winter.
That’s a very similar problem we have with the sea salt in the air. It’s a tricky challenge 🧡

I disagree with the first. There's so many videos of bike recommendations bloating UA-cam already.

Enjoyed this video since I have the top version of the same bike.
I have the 2021 Giant Contend SL1 with Shimano 105, bought new in June 2022. I had to have the rear wheel replaced after discovering cracking around the spoke holes and a couple of broken spokes. Same thing happened with my 2021 Giant Fastroad SL3 2021 - rear wheel failed exactly the same way, the year before. The replacement have been fine. Every so often, I clean the bike, as much a possible. Chain is cleaned and lubricated, especially if really dirty. Your video shows how important to clean and maintain the bike, plus getting it serviced.

@@Bikespeeds Update. The bike has now done over 15,000 miles. I the cassette and chain have been replaced. I am on a third rear wheel, though wheel two needs a freewheel service. And today I found play with the bottom bracket on the non-drive side. I am looking to get a Shimano replacement and notice the spec is 41mm diameter and 86.5mm. I am thinking of doing the work myself.

I have a number of bikes that I have collected over the years. The one I am riding the most is my Colnago Super with 7sp Campy Record and Mavic tubular wheels. Most of my bike are a bit on the old side.

I instantly clicked on the video when I saw the contend! I have a Contend AR 1 (the less racy version of this bike), it has room for wider tires, threaded bottom bracket and 105. I absolutely love the bike. It was affordable, and does a great job for someone my level. Also since it's aluminium I'm not scared to ride it (I'd be a bit scare on a carbon bike to break it...).
I'll be upgrading it in the future, wheels, handlebars, maybe groupset (sram etap is looking rather nice).

Hi, do you have the tires 700x32c? Can someone tell if this is the only difference between AR and SL? I am not sure which one to buy. I am a beginner and i think the 32 would be more suitable for my easy ride then the 28 ... i guess :) Any suggestion?
@@robertpoljak Yes I have the 32c tires. They're fine, but a tad slow imo. Comfortable though! I'm looking into upgrading the wheels + tires for next season though. The stock wheels are a bit heavy. I'll keep them as gravel/winter wheels.
As for the differences, not much.
The SL is more "race" focused (if you can say that about an endurance bike) compared to the AR. I quickly compared the geo and the SL is slightly lower at the front (20mm).
I went for the AR solely for the option to run bigger tires. I live in Belgium so strade bianche gravel isn't a thing here but if I want to go a little bit off road I like to have the option to do so.
Imo you can't go wrong either way. I picked the AR for the geometry specifically because it is my first modern/proper road bike. I'm no tdf athlete and was pretty out of shape when I bought it. So I wanted to make sure that I had a relaxed bike that would fit me and not break my back.
If I was you, I would go ahead and try to decide if you want those bigger tires or not?
@@quintennn thats the answer i wanted :-) Tnx!! I guess I will go with the SL. I already have a mtb for gravel/offroad so the SL will be perfect. Also the option to put the 30c tires is also available. Do you also know whats the total weight of your bike?
@@robertpoljak I think the weight is somewhere around 9.5 (so on the heavier side). That's including pedals, bottle cages, garmin mount. I'm pretty sure you can save about 600grams through the wheels. They're 2.3-2.4kg for the pair. Add lighter tires to that could save you another 50-100 grams. Overall I'm very happy with the bike! Good value for money and more than enough for someone of my level

Yes! These were plastic brake pads which don’t corrode so no need for the grease 🧡

Wow yea a livestream would be epic.
These videos take hours it’s not as easy as just setting up the camera and recording, when a puncture comes in to be fixed we have to stop recording for that 15 minutes. When customers come in to drop off or collect their bikes they’re all also hold ups so a livestream may happen but currently isn’t on the cards 🧡

There is no standard rule. Every single bike is different. We have a general picture of what specific brands and parts need what torque but couldn’t give you much advice sorry. Thanks very much for watching 🧡⚙️

Always a pleasure to watch your videos 🙂. Dry, dusty and sandy terrain made me research dry lubricants and convert my mtb into a waxed drivetrain. Not sure how to deal with on the seaside where rust is always lurking.

Yes waxed we believe is the way to go. It is higher maintenance and higher cost but if you want to keep a nice bike nice it’s the way forward for sure 🧡
Where I love the climate, roads, and amount of sun is perfect. The problems we have because of that is we never service our bikes because we don’t have real reasons to, until we get a catastrophic bike failure. Then we have tons of repairs to do because we didn’t notice anything else going wrong. Regular maintenance is key. Even perfect conditions can cause bike problems.

How often do you recommend a maintenance-service on a Trek Domane AL 3? I got mixed advices here in Canada.
The answer is "it depends". Weather, use case and bike type determine that.
In dry weather in spain I could get away with 2000Km between maintenance, in Scotland in winter it is constant maintenance. So you LBS will know.
Definitely it depends. It really does depend on milage, weather, group-set. We can only recommend having all your problems fixed as they arrive and never letting them build up🧡
