      It has since 2020. It is now complusory for junior schools but optional in senior. But sadly it applies only to federal schools and private schools that want to. A few states do offer history

    10:49 Sounds inaccurate. Dimka did not take over the reins of government because he ran away. He failed in this bid because he was caught some time after being dislodged from the radio station, and was then executed. Nevertheless, awesome job with this piece on the coups! A job really well done.

    • @backinhistory9
      @backinhistory9  Місяць тому

      Noo, I haven't said so, sir. Watch again. In all my videos on Dimka, I have never said that he ever took over the reins of power. But here is the story: He led the assassins that killed the Head of State. From there, he moved to Radio Nigeria to make a speech. While still at Radio Nigeria, then Col. Ibrahim Babangida led troops to the station and tricked him into abandoning the broadcast. From there, Dimka escaped to Jos, and from Jos, he moved to Abakiliki in present-day Ebonyi State, where he checked into Friendship Hotel.
      While there, he asked the Manager of the hotel to invite his long time girl friend, Ugo to come and meet him. Dimka and Ugo were regular guests at the hotel. Dimka had served in Abakiliki during the war and beyond. He was someone that was very free with the locals.
      While in the hotel at night with Ugo, information got to the Army that Dimka was in the hotel. He was surrounded. Dimka escaped through the window. Ran into the nearby Bush and crossed to the road, took a taxi and escaped further. While in the taxi, Radio announcements were made every 5 minutes asking citizens to report Dimka to law enforcement should he be seen.
      Dimka chose to surrender himself to a Police Officer who was on a road block. He was moved to Lagos, tried and convicted. He was executed by firing squad.

    Ironsi and his men did not stop the coup. They only hijacked the coup from their juniors. He shiuld have handed over ti the most senior Minister , while Azikiwe was conviniently away on holidays

    • @backinhistory9
      @backinhistory9  2 місяці тому

      Some sources also state that all the Ministers whose lives were spared were terribly AFRAID 😨 and did not want to step into the shoes of the slain Prime Minister. They were scared that they might be killed by the rampaging soldiers. It was in such tensed situation that Nwafor Orizu, then Senate President, called on the most senior military 🪖 officer to take over the reins of power and that senior officer happend to be Gen. Aguiyi Ironsi.

    • @abdulsalamadewale749
      @abdulsalamadewale749 Місяць тому

      @@backinhistory9 that's not correct because the position is not for ministers. in fact, the Prime Minister in a parliamentary system of government is not a minister, he is a parliamentarian, he is even more powerful than the president while ministers are subjects of the president. The parliamentarians should be the one to elect the prime minister among themselves, that is what Aguiyi Ironsi should have allowed to happen but because of his greed and overambition, he seized power and truncated the regional system.
